I had the privilige of seeing him live in Dublin during his comeback tours, and this song in particular was just purely magical. In his first return gig in 2008 in Dublin, he was reduced to tears by the reception he received, especially when everyone started singing along to 'So Long marianne'
I am almost 73 and fist bought songs of Leonard Cohen when I was a teenager! Saw him live on many occasions a wonderful performer try some of his live songs
I was in old Montreal on a Leonard pilgrimage and was by the river and realized that the sun shone down like honey on our lady of the harbour was a church and not Suzanne. That's the brilliant Leonard CohenThat is the brilliance of Leonard. I have been a Cohen fan since Suzanne and saw him in Toronto a couple of years before he died, it was a dream come true.
You're so right. Anyone can appreciate art. Your appreciation deepens as you age, but young people understand things and are moved deeply. It guides them. Art does this naturally.
Kudos. You do not need to be old to understand this music. I was in my 20s when I heard it. I'm now 70 but I bequeath this to you. I hope 20 year olds will understand this for another 100 years. Thank you for listening!
Yup, We got it at 20. I mean, look at what hubris did for Oedipus. And that's what the notion that we(I'm 64) have some sort of magical lock on Cohen that the youngsters can't comprehend is, pure hubris.
Watch his concert in London when he was 81, or so. You can see how even he had a deeper understanding of his own songs. Older people must respect what the young bring to to the world.
It might be amusing to you to know that in university I took an English course solely based on Leonard Cohen's songs/poems and wrote many papers trying to analyze his work. Love that you're going through it line by line.
Suzanne was the first Cohen song I heard on the radio. It was on a Friday night in the late 80s. I immediately had to check out his other songs - a new world opened to me. Later I saw and heard Cohen live - incredible. React to some more of his songs: Famous blue raincoat; Avalanche; One of us cannot be wrong; Ballad of the absent mare; and so many more...
His whole First album is solid, but if you want an early Cohen song that was a big hit, you can't go wrong with Leonard Cohen - So Long Marianne, there have been a ton of covers though so I wouldn't be surprised if you know it already
I would recommend. dance me to end of love which also features in a film . waiting for the miracle, the future, everybody knows, anthem. just spine shivering evocative songs.
I agree completely with your introduction. I’m old, but not Leonard Cohen old, but when I first started listening I was sucked right in! My favorite band is twenty one pilots, but I’m way too old to be their typical listener!
If you like, some other Cohen songs for the list: The Partisan; Avalanche; Field Commander Cohen; I'm Your Man; The Future; Alexandra Leaving; Happens to the Heart.
You must not be much if any younger than he was when he wrote this, so ........ When he says that her hospitality was "immaculate", he's saying in a coded way what happened - or, more significantly, did NOT happen - between them - as we've been given to understand.
You can't enjoy 'great music'. There's music you will find great and enjoy that. I never (or seldom) talk about a song or band as being 'the best' or 'worst', but talk in terms of what I like or like less. In other words, it's all relative to your taste. Don't let this get in the way of your enjoyment, mind.
I'm the same. Music, John Wayne movies, literature, westerns. Of my favorites in any of it, they can be supplanted by another in the group just because of the time of day, what I had for breakfast, the weather...Or what I'm watching, listening to, or reading at that particular moment.
I've always thought of "Suzanne" as likened to Susan Sarandon's Annie Savoy from "Bull Durham". As far as the line "...he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone", it's a theme that *I* repeatedly find in Cohen's lyrics, which seems to be a lamentation of the wisdom of the Bible being displaced and bastardized to serve an agenda.
Wonderful, wonderful song. There is a live duet performance of this with Judy Collins where her voice gives me goosebumps here: ua-cam.com/video/toEk9DaLrgs/v-deo.html

How beautiful! So glad he could feel the true appreciation for his work.

Leonard Cohen was a published poet for years before he made his first LP in 1967.
I have heard Leonard sing this 4 times live in Concert between 1988 and 2015. Nobody does it better - nobody ever will. I first heard it in 1969.
I am old now but I fell in love with Leonard Cohen and especially Suzanne in the summer of 1967, when I was 20

Leonard was a poet and a prophet. He speaks to everyone and everyone can hear him after his own fashion.

Leonard Cohen the tower of song
Here for Cohen always!!
His song Anthem has saved me more than once.

Over the years Leonard’s voice deepened and became more raw from years of smoking and drinking . One of Canada’s greatest poets
Gorgeous song by one of my favorite singer/poet/songwriters of all time. I miss him soooooo much.
I haven't seen anyone react to this great song, nice choice!
Thank you! I listen to whatever the people suggest

Thank you for this, Marcos. 💟
Thanks for listening

Cohen was the made through Poet Laureate of Canada. Great honor!
That’s really cool!
The background harmonies get me every time.
Cohen was a poet,no songwriter.
RIP
Another real life song from Leonard. Suzanne was the wife of a friend. He was in love with her. No further explanation required.
His whole First album is solid, but if you want an early Cohen song that was a big hit, you can't go wrong with Leonard Cohen - So Long Marianne, there have been a ton of covers though so I wouldn't be surprised if you know it already
Suzanne was a huge hit tho

This song lives in the collective consciousness now, that's where you 'know' it from.
Discovering some great music since watching your Smiths reactions so thank you. Keep it up :)
Thanks, will do!
god I love this artists mind!!
I grew up on Cohen.
Please do Cohen story telling on JOAN OF ARK
Good music will grow with you.
Good reaction on this haunting melody.
Thank you!
Cohen always emphasizes the Sacred and the Profane in his work!
Cohen was an absolute genius. You should do "Avalanche" or "Teachers", the former in particular being one of his best.
Closing Time is the greatest Cohen song. Shocked no reaction vids
Song goes hard 💯
I agree completely with your introduction. I’m old, but not Leonard Cohen old, but when I first started listening I was sucked right in! My favorite band is twenty one pilots, but I’m way too old to be their typical listener!
You may have heard Neil Diamond cover it.
A great modern musician and songwriter is Daniel Romano. I would recommend A Rat without A Tale, First Yoke or When I learned your Name

You should review the DMA’s would recommend silver, feels like 37, play it out or laced.
Please please to Leonard Cohen-"The Faith"!
What's with the nodding?? :)
It's a good song! And it sounded very familiar at first.
Judy Collins made the song famous.
Not sure who that is but I'll allow it.
Hey react to Pale blue Eyes it has a similar feel to this song and I think you'll love it too!

The first LP has lots of sex, sex, and sex.
