A truly great songwriter and performer. I agree that the ability to reach the listeners heart and soul is more important than a spectacular voice or arrangement. I have a special respect for those who take a "less is more" approach. Please do Famous Blue Raincoat when you get the chance. Suzanne and Raincoat are among my all time favorites, and I've been listening to music for over 60 years. All the best to you from an old guy here across the pond.
This song makes me travel in the past, way way back. I'm 63 now. I was 16 and I was traveling through Spain with my cousin and his friends. We camped out on a hill in front of Toledo. There was this guy up there, playing the guitar and singing this song to the girl who was with him. I will never forget it. Suzanne has traveled with me throughout the years.
I think it would be interesting comparing him singing his songs earlier in his career and later in his life listening to how his voice had changed.
To be fair, I'm not here because you are a Vocal Coach. I'm here because Leonard gets some love on YT. Especialy this song. Cheers! :)

One of my favourite things to find and enjoy is music that gives me chills and goosebumps. I was cruising UA-cam recently and discovered a Russian talent show contestant that did just that, with one of the best, most unique voices I've heard in many years. Her delivery was nothing short of magical and I searched out more and more and more, and...more chills.
I was stunned to find that the first performance I heard was when she was 14!!!! She's now 17 and still developing. She sings in Russian, French, English and Arabic.
The covers she performed on that show are very popular on UA-cam. Many UA-camrs publish reactions on these performances, which include the ethnic song "River" (in a new musical arrangement), "Blizzard", "Wicked Game", "Human", "Derniere Danse", "Helwa Ya Baladi" and others.

Last year i went to old Montreal and saw the location where Leonard wrote this song i saw the exact spot where lived Susan lived and our lady of the harbour church across from the river !!! It was An amazing esperience!!!!
IMHO Mr Cohen actually got better with age. Perhaps not from a vocal coach perspective but it gave his songs even more gravitas in a way. I love that you pointed out that he never wanted to be a musician. When he won his Juno award a friend actually spoke to him and said “Can you believe you won the award for best singer?” Cohen gave him a small chuckle and said “Yeah, it can only happen in Canada *hehe*”. That says a lot about him. Never a man who took his status or talent for granted.

Hi Aleksandra. I am not likely to ever be a student of yours due to my diminished singing aptitude. I do enjoy your youtubes and thoughts though. This song is the first one I ever heard Leonard sing. It was the day after my beautiful girlfriend had to tell me that I had been replaced. The bottom fell out of my world so that when I heard this song, and album, I was "hauled in like a like a kite". I spent much too many hours listening to Leonard's first two albums. As autumn approached, I painted a picture of him which my employer put into his gallery front window. One day I ran upstairs for coffee and saw Leonard standing there with a lady, peering at the picture. I went to meet him and found him down the street, exiting a photography store. We spoke briefly and he agreed to come tomorrow with money for the painting, which he did. The beauty never goes away from his many better pieces. 54 years later, I still have to be careful listening to his music. I had used his lyrics as an alternative to common reality and paid dearly for it. My advice to people is to listen with caution. He is a haunting fellow. Thanks for being a gifted and beautiful presenter on youtube. ❤🙏🌺

Since you obviously like older Leonard Cohen songs (you chose a song from his first album-Songs of Leonard Cohen 1967), I suggest another song from same album, The Stranger Song. Pay close attention to his left eye and cheek as the song ends.
