@Tammy Fletcher wow...the ignorance in your comment is staggering!! Not all homeless Oakland residents do drugs...rent is high af...please know wtf your talkin about...or come to the Town yourself and I'd be GLAD to show your dumb ass how wrong you are!
In this world the system is not made for the ordinary people, there are some who luckily enjoy the benefits of capitalism or communism or whatever but this world or system is not intended straightly for the people, the problem is that nobody know that. People think politicians are incompetent or incapable but that's not the matter the point is the world is just made for the benefit of an elite or small privileged group, regular or simple people is not considered important, it is just used for the system and some of them in change of their service and devotion to the system reach some benefits but even those fortunate are not considered essentials or necessaries, they're not important. Massive people that do not have a place in the system is in some way benefited if they are not being exterminated immediately like in the case of these homeless. (We're all people)
@@aguacan We live in a world with less poverty, better education, more political freedom, fewer wars, and generally better housing than at any time in human history. Before the coronavirus hit, more people were employed than at any time in history. Yes, not everyone shares equally, and some people will always suffer regardless of what system we live in, but, in general, all of us as a general rule are much better off than we've ever been. We have the ability to communicate with people almost anywhere in the world. Many have electricity, clean water, and generally have access to healthcare that has never been better at any time in our history. Most people have access to some form of transport, and many, even in the second world, own a car. That allows us to live and work almost anywhere we choose. What time in human history would you rather live in? If there's not such a time, stop whining and start making things better for those who don't have all the things you have.
I was born and raised in Oakland. Went to school there and attended & graduated from SFSU. It used to be a town where the ADOS/Black middle class family thrived. The reality is most people are being priced out. With housing prices rising (because of Silicon Valley 💰) housing values rose but so did property taxes. It's huge to go from paying $800.00 to $1,500.00 per year in property taxes. To paying $8000.00 to $15,000.00 yearly. Good hard working people didn't always lose a job. But lost their home simply because they work hard but their salaries didn't keep up. The salary stagnation didn't allow the family to remain financially stable. Thus you 👀 what you 👀 in Oakland. It's a ruthless, wickedly vicious cylcle. Silicon Valley money comes into Oakland housing market then explodes. Many peoples salaries stayed stagnant but property taxes and property tax payments rose regardless. What you 👀 today started in 1990. Yep I said 1990. It the results of thirty years of gentrification. I know because I saw it up close and first hand. Let this be a cautionary tale. The destruction you 👀 today may have been put into motion up to 20 or 30 years prior.
They have a drug problem, but choose to call it a housing problem. Why do you think there is gang 'art work' all over the place? No matter how poor someone is they can still be clean, tidy and well educated and have an ounce of self-respect, there is no excuse. And, the Liberal leaders delight in allowing this to happen to their cities. Totally unacceptable!
It's the same everywhere. I grew up in San Francisco and went to SFSU as well so understand the housing issues...Housing prices are going off the roof because of the quantitative easing and money printing from the Federal Reserved backed up by the US government. I'll tell ya, if you keep money and save it, you'll definitely lose out...we live in a society where our money is not safe anywhere, not even in the bank. We need to make the right financial choices especially now more than ever. It's pretty much impossible to be able to buy a property in the Bay Area let alone SF with a family working blue collar jobs...unless you cook everyday and buy groceries...actually, now that I think about it, even if you did, you would still struggle...you know why? Because the US gov has screwed everyone and the economy over by printing money and devaluing the US dollar and in turn, devaluing blue collar jobs while the world is inflating property...well....inflating the cost of everything...aka asset inflation...
It is the oddest feeling in the world seeing this because you are primed as an Ameriburger to think this is an aberration, that this only exists in equatorial countries. Not here. But it is real and no one wants to deal with it, or if you try it is like you somehow make it worse.
I Live Down in L.A. 400 Miles Away, I've Seen Worse, But here in Oakland... Damn, Shit & Fuck, it's Insane in Oakland with Homeless Shanty's in Parts of the City.
Blunted206 A Fool has said in his heart Their is no God ‘(YAH) is His name and two things Either you are the seed of Esau or a lost sheep.. But which ever recompense is around the corner....🧟♀️ 👑🐢🌴..
This is the worst I’ve ever seen in the US. Looks like homes were taken, some are trying to make it in campers and the very unlucky in tents. Very sad 🙏🏼
A lot of these people arent from California. Theyre sent here from other states or come here to get the benefits. San Francisco alone spends over 250 million dollars a year on homelessness.
They only gentrified where the whites started moving in. Downtown looks different. Nice homes in Piedmont, Montclair and shit like that. They don't care about the poor and homeless parts though. They try to keep the homeless in certain parts of Oakland, out of site out of mind like they don't exist. Same in Frisco. You can be in a nice part then go a few blocks in the wrong direction shit looks like hell.
Its not like there is any where better hey this video just will cause people to take advantage and leach of the struggleing stop taping start working if you video your not helping
This is a stupid tactic that will make you poorer. After all, most homeless people go to the southern states. Better stock up on warm clothes and head north. There you will not have homeless competitors. You will be able to collect more alms and get rich.
How can you commentators say it’s a Democratic problem when you’ve had a republican in office for 3 1/2 years that could have been figuring these problems out instead of only thinking about himself. Unfortunately this is not just in Oakland but in every part of the US
libby schaaf is a centrist and possibly an undercover white supremacist. she just got most of city council to pass a budget that did not defund the police department hardly enough at all... she ran against a longtime oakland activist and won because the democratic party paid for her campaign....
I'm old. In the 70s I went to school with kids from CA who said you Did Not want to live in Oakland. It had a high crime rate in 1975. Lots of gangs and drugs.
@@SweetUniverse I grew up and still live in the bay area, East Bay. He is picking and choosing areas on which to film. What he isn't showing is the revitalized areas of West Oakland. New housing, Lofts, parks, restaurants, businesses, etc. I know because I used to live on Pine Street in the area, and you wouldn't believe how much most of the city had changed for the better. I also still have family in Oakland. Sure there are still areas of blight, but you find that in any big city.
I know all these streets in this video. I’ve driven them countless times when I lived in the East Bay. I left in 2005. The housing market was getting out of control. I left before it got this bad. About 5 years ago, I bought a beautifully restored 6 bedroom historic brick house in Aurora, IL for $147K. It’s now worth $240K. And I don’t even live there. I moved to the Philippines. I have two adult daughters that still live in the East Bay. They work full time jobs, but can’t even afford to rent a 2 bedroom apartment for them to share so they live with their mom in her 1 bedroom house. I honestly don’t understand why someone would stay living there now. Not even my daughters. I’ve offered to give them my house in Aurora. They have been out there for short periods of time and lived in the house. But they won’t stay. It’s like they are addicted to the California fantasy. The Bay Area is no longer a place for normal people to live. You are either wealthy or you are living in an unhealthy situation.
@@rachiesayd9423 well good for you hon...I live frugal as well and as much as I love Oakland the crackery in my area makes it difficult at times, so like I said...sick of the bullshit tho!
@@Moon-jp2xx sorry to hear about your "crackery"... I'm in E. Oakland but not in the flats... I will admit life in the lowlands is challenging! However the diversity of this town is for me the main attraction, and you can't find that just anywhere! Oakland leads the way in showing how we all live together from various backgrounds and experiences to create a harmonious multicultural, multiracial, multicreed, community! Being a part of that experiment and making it work is worth a bit of inconvenience and struggle as far as I am concerned!!!
Folks who say this looks like a Third World country have probably never been to a slum in such a country. I have. As bad as it is, the streets of Oakland would be a big step up for residents of the slums of Nairobi, Kenya.
idk bout a step up. whatever happens in 3rd world countries happens here in the us. oakland. actually it,;s urged in america. human trafficking, prostituion, murder, drugs ect.
@@Joiedevivredesilives if you don't like it, leave. bye. you won't be missed. it is the best county in history and will be in our lifetimes. those nordic countries you apparently feel are better won't have you as immigration is strict and your contributions here are likely minimal at best on a good day, so we probably couldn't give you away. there's always been homeless, there will always be homeless. that's a result of relative freedom, and we're still the freest in the world. a lot of these people should be in jail, a mental institution, or in rehab. others don't have the good sense to move out of a place with high taxes, lax law enforcement, not enough affordable housing, and few jobs. some shouldn't even be in the country to begin with. but, keep voting for liberals, they do such good work -- just look at their plans... they do have a plan, don't they? no, the plan is to keep raising taxes and lining pockets along the way, making empty promises, and creating a new program now and then that pisses away millions of dollars and does little good, if anything.
And when you think about the people who are struggling to keep a roof over their heads and needing to have people sleeping on the sofa and on bunk beds just to survive.
What are you talking about? LA and SF already have huge parts of the city that look like this. San Diego is the only major city that's not quite there yet
@@dustinq9530 Yes, the liberal mindset. I have a good life but I want more, therefore I will take it from other people, and then forget about them by pushing them to the outskirts where I will never see them. Then I will complain because parts of my city look like that. Then I will complain because the money that I earned is going to help them instead of putting new marble countertops in my favorite shopping centers bathrooms.
Juve Zhang Well, we’re trying to bring them back...Oakland looks like it has a lot of space to redevelop. Tear down the blight and put in some factories- great location - SF bay.
It did begin quite some time ago. You've seen a mass exodus from nearby cities like a criminally overpriced San Francisco, an out of control and ballot regulated Oakland Realtors association, Than Merrill, the house flipping guru teaching many with Silicon Valley money to come in and buy up entire neighborhoods and price out those who were living there.Couple that with all the high end luxury properties built where all the affordable housing used to be. Many were just a missed paycheck or two from this tragic outcome anyway, moving the family and whatever they could fit into the car to carve out a space under the freeway that wasn't already taken. Many still have or had a job but being underemployed and underpaid, also the shelter in place from the Covid pandemic pretty much ended all hope there. At one point in Oakland, there were a number of"transient " hotels, that a single room could help until things got better, but they were All systematically wiped out, mysteriously All around the same time. There is little to no response to the mental health crisis and serious drug intervention, but there are also many other factors not even mentioned here and with the economic collapse from this pandemic, we have not seen the worst of this. Stay strong, be as safe and resilient and do what you can everyday towards your Survival.
Agree with you on everything here. I was surprised to see the big SRO downtown on 14th street is being completely gutted recently. Bet a million bucks they’ll transform it into luxury apartments. Seems like odd timing to destroy housing meant for low to no income folks since we’re in the middle of a pandemic.
@@SaMNW You're absolutely right, and I am amazed how the city can continue with lip service about how they're trying to rectify this tragic situation, when all one has to do is take a look around. You would definitely win that bet because a major part of the wealthy developer city partnered agenda is to eliminate all lifelines and replace it with high end, very unaffordable luxury housing. SRO's have played a major role in the survival of individuals and families in the inner city trying to make ends meet during some really tough times and this is maybe one of the toughest times we may see in our lifetime. We are seeing the worst of this inhumane situation as the Oakland/BayArea came in close to number one in the nation where these conditions exist per population numbers. Wealthy developers could care less about a pandemic, their bottom line is profit, no matter how many people suffer and perish.
Yes and with the 2008 meltdown foreclosed properties were getting snatched up for$80,000 by the block full!!! Wealthy investors swooped in and gobbled up every available house, only to convert to rentals and jack up the rents to the very people who were foreclosed and evicted!!!
This has caused issues you wouldn't imagine. Los Angeles has a "oversized rat" problem due to this. Something prior to the 1960s you would only see in 3rd world countries.
@Donnell Okafor In some parts of the Bay Area million dollar homes are normal. In San Jose 54% of all houses cost one million or more. In San Francisco/Oakland/Hayward it is 42%. sf.curbed.com/2019/11/15/20966966/bay-area-leads-the-nation-in-million-dollar-homes

Yes the Raiders left Oakland and now belong to Vegas. You ought to see the stadium that was built!!! Black and Silver. State of the art. Huge Raider logo on the sides. Same goes for the training facility. Absolutely huge! To me their move to Vegas was the best thing for let's face it...Las Vegas is a money metropolis. When you're driving on the freeway you can't help but see it and once you do you will be very impressed. That's why so many from Oakland are moving here. Cheaper rent, cheaper homes and never a dull moment if you like nightclub casino entertainment. I just bought a 4 bedroom, 3 bath home with a pool that features a waterfall. 3 car garage. 2184 sq feet. For $400,000k! In the Bay area such a home would cost between 3 to 5 million easy. The only setback is the heat but you get used to it. And it does get cold here. If you have legal issues such as warrants don't bother for Clark County has one of the most sophisticated legal law enforcement system in the entire country. Prisons are located in the desert so if the heat don't get the ones that try to escape, the snakes will. They even have a water park here. Circus Circus casino has a whole section just for the kids. So yeah, Vegas may get hot and the wages top off at around $25 to $30 per hour depending on the job but I wouldn't want to call anyplace else home. I just can't help but be impressed by the new stadium for the Raiders. Temperature controlled, element proof. Price tag? $1.8 BILLION. Don't be surprised if the Oakland A's strike a deal as well. Vegas now has hockey and football. All that's missing is a baseball team. Oh well, at least the Bay area still has Great America.
The Oakland Coliseum where the Raiders use to play is co-owned by the City of Oakland and the County of Alameda. They financed the construction in the mid 1960's when Football Teams could not afford to build Stadiums. The Raiders could not take the financial losses that they took from the City and County asking for more and more money so they left for a better place for their Stadium.
Politicians getting rich and people increasingly poor. This has always been the case in countries like Mexico and Brazil. Do you find countries like Mexico and Brazil poor? the people are poor, the countries have everything. Maybe bad days are coming to the USA and European countries. From Columbus.
Well, you won't get richer if you have all those kids....Compare the population in Mexico and Brazil 1980 and today. Then look how nice its getting to be in the former communist countries in Europe and Vietnam in Asia. Compare the population in those countries in 1980 and today...There you have it!

the Oakland A's are trying to buy up public/community land, tried to buy up a community college by hook and by crook. but the neighborhood said no. no to their slave wages, no to the increased traffic, crime, rent, and pollution. yet they are still trying...

Tragedy in Oakland; San Francisco; L.A.; Portland; Seattle. These encampments are all up and down the west coast. Mental illness and addiction are the real pandemics.
Seattle’s so gentrified you won’t see a street looking like this in Seattle. white folks over populate in the CD now. And the Souf end since the light rail. But Oakland though yikes.
Honolulu is the same way. 5000 plus homeless. They push them out of one area, and it goes somewhere else. America has been rotting for years, those of us in it, don’t see it, because it’s been slow and incremental.
They have camps that are built in empty that are waiting to be filled with the homeless or whoever doesn't go along with taking their vaccines and going with their digital programs. They're going to do away with cash and the only way you will have money is if you get their shots in get hooked to their grid everybody is going to get a sum of money for a little while and then they're going to pull it and if you don't go along then they will put you into camps
California makes it almost impossible for small business to thrive within senseless regulations and constant bureaucratic encroachment. This creates an ultimate divide between ultra wealthy and everyone else. Not to mention, the ultra strict building code makes it uneconomical to build modest housing. What winds up happening is the government dominates low income housing and thus has no competition, and high end developers do everything else.
They're sometimes hidden in san jose, or at least were a couple of years ago. Huge population all around the guadalupe river areas in SJ, but lots of small camps all over. They haven't seem to be dropping like flies so I guess this 'pandemic' was more or less a bunch of BS.
Y H Dude, do you not leave your house or drive on any freeway? They are all over every freeway all over SJ, esp on 680, 101 and 87 near downtown. It’s like shantytowns!
@@smittenkit This is true.. generally any place that's slightly less exposed and is 'public land'. I was a cop in Oakland in the 80's and 90's. The street corners had way more people standing around selling drugs or acting as muscle and lookouts back then, but there were very few tents and garbage piles on the streets in those days. The crack epidemic is over but the citizens of Oakland appear to be far worse off than they were back then. Sad to see not only no progress after the end of the crack epidemic, but an actual huge step backwards. And it's probably mostly due to big tech money coming in and pricing the citizens out of their own city.
What kills me are the empty lots, acres of empty lots and all the homeless in one of the richest states in America. Something is very wrong with this system. the people who decide the world will be this way... they should be served up like tartare so we could all taste them.

@Sar Jim you can't see past the end of your own nose man.
The housing prices were going up WAY before the tech boom.
Because the US gov has screwed everyone and the economy over by printing money and devaluing the US dollar and in turn, devaluing blue collar jobs while the world is inflating property...well....inflating the cost of everything...aka asset inflation...
silicone valley is so far from oakland tho

Any city or state controlled by the Democrat party rots away just like this.

I just bought a 4 bedroom, 3 bath
home with a pool that features a waterfall.
Futuristic Concepts thanks for the positive feed back bud. I’m looking forward to visiting in October when the heat dies down a bit. Have a great day.

This is exactly what being dependent on your government looks like. !!!!

@@SKuLLxKruSHeR these cities are run by Democrats. Disgusting!!!
@@jan22150 Dude you re right! How can they let it get like this!! Our cities all look this way so to me Democrats AND republicans are the enemy!!
Bingo. You won the internet!
One of the best videos you have uploaded, gracias!
Come down about an hour south to San Jose - lots more of that down here
DAMN 😭
They're sometimes hidden in san jose, or at least were a couple of years ago. Huge population all around the guadalupe river areas in SJ, but lots of small camps all over. They haven't seem to be dropping like flies so I guess this 'pandemic' was more or less a bunch of BS.
@@fn0rd99 most of the homeless are immune to corona, they live in so much worse.
By on-ramps, exits.. behind any token vegetative cover on railway lines, between the sound-barrier walls on the freeways, etc.. lots and lots of places, you'd really have to be "not looking" to not see any evidence of them. They generally have no access to waste management services so if you see some debris or what looks like trash bags have exploded narby, look around for the tents and tarps. Tough to miss.
This is worse then i've seen in some 3rd world countries.
Big Rock stop putting blame on immigrants. America was built by hard working immigrants!
Big Rock instead blame your corrupt politicians!
@Big Rock All of the third world countries are bad because they copy the economic policy from your country. U.S. are trash ideologically

Looking in from Australia. I have been to SE Asia many times to some parts considered third world. This is worse.
I’m guessing it’s Democrat run, they really are your enemy.
Derek Parker what would a republican do to fix this with your Australian expertise on America?
Yes, the Democrats' agenda is to stop any opposition to Republicans. They did this by stealing the election from Bernie three months ago. The dude won the first 3 states popular vote, but all the other corporate Democrats rallied behind Biden to stop Bernie from winning Super Tuesday. The Democrats would rather lose to Trump than win with a progressive because it's within their financial interests.
Liberals are our foreign enemies destroying us from the inside.

Why does California have a high poverty rate? "Experts say its the high cost of housing" "Medium household rents in California have risen 13.2 percent from 2006 to 2016 , while medium annual earnings for full time workers grew by only 4.1 percent" . 2016 to 2020 rent costs have risen even higher while wages remain stagnant. The Bay Area and Los Angeles markets have priced many people out of housing.
These people voted for this Mayor and welcome it whole heartedly. Enjoy.........
Im from the bay area those are called tent cities we got em in every city out here
Californian dystopia... Brought to you by the state and city governments !
The America they never show you. We all have a little dirt in the back yard.
Living in the Bay most of my life it’s crazy how the majority of all the “regular people” become completely desensitized to all of the poverty.
Capitalism and socialism - take the worst elements of both, mix them together, and you get California.
I’m in Oakland and it’s not a “third word” it does look bad but we have a lot of good people trying to help and make change
I'm in east part, people dump there trash on the streets, sidewalks, throw FastFood containers Out there car windows Like NOTHING I have ever seen. Abandoned cars everywhere, And Homeless on San Leandro St, Under the BAART tracks. I think there All Horders by nature. pallets & rubish bicycle frames by the hundreds. The city is un-conscience. Americas corperations sold OUT its people! off shoring to china & mexico While the mexicans are coming HERE for a job ? No skills, No english skills? Competing for entry work against generations of Americans who cant find work either. but get often get preferential treatment. Then trump gives the corperations a 75% tax cut.
Why is there always someone in the comments saying some crap like "hurr durr, I live here, and it has its bad parts, but also has some really good people hurr durr!" Cool, that's great, but its still an uninhabitable dumpster fire, and dangerous as hell.

Shame on the mayor of Oakland letting so many become homeless
OH dont U worry, there throwing Money at the problem as fast as they can
NOT the goverments role to put people in homes
I was a cop in Oakland in the 80's and 90's. The street corners had way more people standing around selling drugs or acting as muscle and lookouts back then, but there were very few tents and garbage piles on the streets in those days.
The crack epidemic is over but the citizens of Oakland appear to be far worse off than they were back then. Sad to see not only no progress after the end of the crack epidemic, but an actual huge step backwards. And it's probably mostly due to big tech money coming in and pricing the citizens out of their own city.
Fentanyl epidemic arrived to replace it.
WHAT CITY IS THIS? I THOUGHT Y'ALL SAID IT WAS CALIFORNIA!!
not all of California is “hollywood” lol there are some areas that experience large amounts of poverty
We used to stay in Oakland like 6 years ago before leaving to Chicago and the shit wasn't depressing like this😪

The whole state is a tragedy. Failed state run by failed policies and failed politicians.
High rent, increased population causes not many job opportunities. Plus increased drug influence.
What kills me are the empty lots, acres of empty lots and all the homeless in one of the richest states in America. Something is very wrong with this system. the people who decide the world will be this way... they should be served up like tartare so we could all taste them.
Yeah well if you had dot-com techies invade and take over your town, you would experience a large homeless population as well!!! With houses selling for starting at$600,000 and averaging$1,000,000 no one except for the very wealthy or those making six figures can even consider purchasing a home!!! Every tent you see resides a formerly productive member of society, many of which are currently employed but don't earn enough to live here in the Bay Area!!! It is a very difficult sad situation and these people are forced to exist this way through no fault of their own!!! These are good hard working people many formerly middle class with families to provide for!!! Attempts have and are being made to resolve this intractable travesty befalling these poor unfortunate souls, but the amount of funding required is just simply more than most municipalities can devote to any single need since the realities of urban life these days is far too complex and daunting!!! Hopefully someone will find a way to help because when some suffer, we all suffer........
@@MrNorcalshepherd you obviously have never been down on your luck by no fault of your own! Your assumptions are way off base! What you call a majority is in fact a small minority!!! Many studies have shown most homeless people are working but don't earn enough to pay for housing!!! Easy for you to dismiss your fellow citizens as worthless and unhelpable , when actually it is you who needs help, in your misinformed thinking!!! Try getting your information from some other source than faux news and open your eyes to what is really going on in the world around you........
I see lots of railroad tracks. It must have been a busy industrial area at one time until it was all sent to China. Once again, thank you democrats! Vote for Biden!
