      I’m Chinese and my metabolism is horrible. I went from weighing under 80
      pounds when I was a child to being 160 as a 16 year old. So not all Asians have crazy fast metabolisms. I guess I could chalk it up to me being raised in the U.S. but still.

      @@warriorKatsK I can totally relate. I live in Asia but still, my whole family, including many in our extended families are overweight/obese. I'm obese myself. In my case, it's the eating culture within my own family that promotes all this. I never noticed how warped our perception of food was(still is) until I reached my 20's. The way you were fed as a child really plays a big role imo. (other than that, it's also trauma for me.)

    1) How everyone stayed so skinny despite eating well over 2000 calories a day (I have to be careful with carbs in particular and stick to around 1500 calories)
    2) Why so many of the Japanese teachers I worked with developed diabetes despite never being even chubby let alone fat

    I am half Japanese and half Colombian. When I used to live in Japan until 11, I was "ガリガリでした". But once I moved to Canada and hit puberty, my body changed drastically and I was prone to gaining weight. I was no longer able to eat whatever I wanted and I quickly started to have issues with high cholesterol. I think my body was having a hard time switching over to the different diet (Japanese food vs the food I've been eating here in Canada). Interesting video. Thank you for explaining things in simple terms:)

    I inherited this aswell, having higher insulin release since early childhood.

    I got hashimotos since age 10, so I'm normal figured only thanks to my mom's asian-like genes, otherwise I would prolly be super overweight like everyone else having this condition.
    Still feel kinda betrayed and uncomfortable but it is what it is.

And then my poor Korean American roommate? Forget about it, the pressure was about a million times worse for her, I had to help her while she was crying about it once or twice and she was even thinner than I am, if Im an American s/xs she's xxs for sure and imo absolutely gorgeous, but her family still found things to nit pick :(

      The method of reversion is rapid weight loss.
      Problem is in many asian countries people (especially old people from previous generation) tend to shy away from health screening so it's kinda hard to catch diseases early.
      The second problem is the method itself. From a recent medical trial in england patients that had success in reversing their type 2 diabetes all took an extreme diet plan (650-850 calories a day) under strict medical supervision for 2 to 5 months, then switching to more moderate diet plan, before lastly returning to normal caloric intake for their ideal weight.
      Another method is increasing physic activity but this seems to work only 50% of the time and it doesn't results in reversion but just a medication free controlled type 2 diabetes. (which means if you stop working out, the control also stop).
      Pevention is better. Screen yourself every 6 months (HbA1c test), reversing a prediabetes and metabolic syndrome is way easier and viable.

    Q2- although in type 2 diabetes finally decrease insulin secretion, it is due to the reduction of insulin sensitivity that cell could not efficiently use insulin
    A2: I agree with what you're saying, that if you have a lot of fat tissue it produces hormones that block the insulin receptors and prevent cells from making use of the sugar. As this continues however the betacells of the pancreas produce more and more insulin eventually leading to the loss of pancreas function and in consequence insulin production stops entirely.

    There's this thing called insulin resistance. Imagine that Asians produce 10 insulin on average that opens, say, 10 glucose doors per hour. Europeans/Americans produce 20 insulin on average that opens 20 glucose doors per hour.
    Since insulin is produced as a response to glucose in the blood, when the Asian and the European eat the same amount of food over what they usually do, say 500 grams more rice than usual, their bodies also produce more insulin than usual. This response is linear for every unit of glucose entering our blood stream, so we can say 500 gr more carbohydrate is going to increase insulin production by 10 for both the Asian and the European. Makes sense, right? Now this is where it gets stupid.
    Since Asians only have 10 doors opening in an hour, when their insulin gets increased by 10, it spikes to 20 which is double the number. The doors are now opening twice as often. The body tries to regulate this because you can't pump in glucose at twice the tolerable rate for the rest of your life. So your cells, in response to this, replaces the doors with doors that are half as wide, to make sure that the number of glucose going in is the same despite the doors opening twice as fast.
    Problem is, the Asian doesn't usually eat that extra 500 gr of rice. So the next day, when they find their insulin back to 10 and the doors opening at the usual speed, they find that they can't take in the same amount of glucose, because the doors stays half as wide. This is basically type 2 diabetes, the insulin resistance.
    Europeans and Americans don't have this problem because they start out with 20 doors open per hour, so when the insulin spikes, it only goes up to 30 doors per hour, which is only 1.5 times as fast. Or at the very least, their cells don't reduce the width of the doors as easily and it takes more time for the doors to get as small as the Asians. The ratio of glucose and door opening speed and door size is just an analogy, but this is how type 2 diabetes work in a nutshell.

    • @Noelciaaa
      @Noelciaaa 2 роки тому +56

      What about intracellular fat insulin resistance? Asians eating things like western fast food, high in fat, can affect the diabetes rates as well. I've seen studies and trials proving this issue can be reversed on a low fat whole food diet, but what about the issue you'd been talking about? Is it reversible through diet?
      Also, apparently if you just eat sugar, you can't put on weight. However, if you eat sugar and fat, that sugar can be converted into fat. A weird thing but it's how it works. Items that contain a lot of both are usually creams, dairy-based desserts. Asians historically consumed almost no dairy, so this might explain less obesity as well.

    • @taki1255
      @taki1255 2 роки тому +56

      @@Noelciaaa I'm pretty sure that sugar itself will cause you to gain weight.
      In fact, healthy fats are responsible for you feeling full, so if you eat sugar without fat you'd gain more weight because you end up consuming more calories trying to make yourself feel full.

    • @Noelciaaa
      @Noelciaaa 2 роки тому +47

      @@taki1255 No, this is a fact confirmed by studies that consuming only sugar causes it to turn into glycogen. Not that eating so much of it is healthy either way, it weighs down on the liver having to conduct this process. But what makes you feel full most effectively is fiber. Fat might, but it's less feeling actually full and more fatigued due to too much fat causing red blood cells to become sticky and carry less oxygen (this is the true cause of the so called "food coma", asides from eating way way too much, to the point of insides hurting).
      I mean, whole-food fat is good, but even this can be overdone. Most long-living and healthiest populations had been historically eating from 80% to even 90% carbs, mostly complex ones, many many greens, only the rest is distributed between fat and protein. Of course, if you're a bodybuilder, this is not ideal, but for the avg person just aiming for basic fitness for health, it's ideal. Also if someone eats nuts to get that whole-food fat, wrapped in fiber that prevents it from absorbing too quickly and causing the blood to be sticky, most nuts require a few hours or so of soaking up water. This deactivates an "anti-sprouting" plant hormone that is making it difficult to digest (the feeling of heaviness after eating a lot of nuts). Water means the nut can start growing, so it becomes easy to digest after.
      Lol sorry for sort of going off but tbh, I'm procrastinating on work, haah.

      Also, in Japan at least, people walk a lot. Take the train. Ride bicycles. IDK if its like that in brazil? I assume cars are more rare because of the price? In america everyone has a car. We will drive to the mailbox, while eating a burger...

    This actually helped me understand why my cousins grandma and my cousin whom both have diabetes, constantly take injections and it also helped me learn more about what diabetes is. I used to think diabetes was just an illness where there was too much sugar in your blood.
    This was honestly so interesting, i learnt something new 😂
