@@aminorerror Sure. But start by getting rid of the main issue which here seems to be faulty hardware. This rant gets a bit off topic at times, a lot of what you complain about has noting to do with your machine and it also seems your technical knowlede is limited... That being said I understand your frustration.... By the way if you don't want iCloud to move your files to the cloud simply disable the functionality and the local copy will stay on your desktop and keep a copy in the cloud like you want. @@aminorerror Well the other biggest point was that your older versions of software was not compatible natively with Apple Silicon which is expected and you likely should have done more research before going for it instead of maybe getting a second hand intel machine from 2019/2020.
Other than that it seems like system stability is your biggest issue.

Hi! I had very similar experience with my M1 Macbook Pro. Initially it was crashing non stop. The problem was that I restored applications and files from my timemachine backup, which included a bunch of ancient drivers or kernel extensions or whatever they are called. Solution was to do a fresh install (erase the hard drive, install just the operating system). Then restored just my documents but no applications from the timemachine backup. And finally I installed all the software manually, and after that, there's been absolutely no crashes whatsoever.

THANK YOU! That's a really helpful tip, I hadn't even thought of that and nobody else has suggested it either but that makes a lot of sense. Also, a total pain in the ass and more to my point that Intel apps just shouldn't even have the option of running as that would have saved me most of my problems besides the hard crashing of the system.

@@aminorerror I hope it helps. I agree it's a major flaw from Apple that they have not sufficiently considered people who have upgraded years ago from PowerPC to Intel and now to Apple Silicon. The new machines just can't handle very old software and drivers.

Yeah, restarts shouldn’t take 10 minutes. Might be wise to use recovery mode to reset the laptop and try installing individual programs and see if anything is tripping up the computer. I switched to Apple Silicon M2 Pro and can restart the computer in less than a minute and have had minimal issues with the laptop running poorly with Ableton and Digital Performer 11.
As for iCloud, just make a projects/lessons/“whatever you want to call it” folder that is local on the Mac or on an external drive. Not all of your files have to be synced with iCloud.

Thanks for watching and the tip on iCloud! That was def on me, although Idk how to set it up so iCloud doesn't upload a certain file, I'll have to do a google search for that. Or I think I'm just gonna pass on iCloud for now lol

  • @kchabangu
    @kchabangu 6 місяців тому +1

Regarding the restarts that seems like a hardware issue that you need to return or get some kind of support cause that isn't normal. But the software issues have more to do with software vendors the M series has been out for over 3 years now. They could have optimised their apps to work or clearly stated that they would be releasing new versions. But your biggest issue is the hardware you have some kind of factory fault. Plus there is also a bit of user error, plus having things that have old IO. You also fall into a very unique group of people who have very unique hardware.

LOL...this sounds like a nightmare. I know you don't want to go to PC, but I run my DAW, almost all the NDSP plugins (2 at a time sometimes), dual monitors, etc. on Windows 11 with 16 GB of RAM with no issues. The only problem I have experienced is having too many tabs open in the browser and the memory gets consumed. I could add more memory and solve that issue for sure, but I just close some tabs and all is restored. The cable format changes are ridiculous...and then they have the guts to charge 10x what a cable is worth to get the Apple-branded cables!
See you Sunday - hopefully your system is working!

    A few thoughts.
    1. Not sure about your Macbook pro. I upgraded to an M3 MacBook air from an Intel MacBook Pro and absolutely no crashes. It also takes only a few seconds to boot. So something is going on with your Mac. Maybe get it checked.
    2. MacOS updates. Sure, they update it yearly but for the most part, the new updates are "hidden" and the new OS looks and functions mostly like the old one. You can pretty much ignore the new features if you like.
    3. It's not really fair blaming apple for the upgrade policies of the other software that you use. Should Apple not have moved to Apple Silicone for software compatibility?
    4. USB A? Man, it's 2024 now. Everything will be USB-C soon. But I've never had any problems using USB A devices on my Macbook Air.

  • @mr-prez
    @mr-prez 6 місяців тому

Regarding the OS updates: You don't *have* to update those every year. Apple supports each version for up to 3 years. So you'll still be able to get security updates and other minor things for the same OS during that time. You can manually achieve the 2-3 year cadence yourself and that's what most pros end up doing. Just make sure to turn off auto updates and auto downloading of those updates so you can manually decide what to install in the control panel.

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  6 місяців тому

Thanks for the tip, that's very helpful! Still a total pain in the ass and I'll have to do research on how to only download and install the security updates and not the larger update as a whole.

So really the complaint really is with the companies who have not updated their software, causing problems with your MacBook.
Never experienced a single issue with Waves or other third party audio software, Logic, Final Cut, iCloud, etc.
Perhaps it’s the migration from your older MacBook (given that is how you set it up). If I missed that in the video, apologies.

I've been having crashing issues with my Intel-based MacBook recently and I believe it's related to USB devices I have attached. I was charging an iPod Touch and some ear buds (non-apple) and it may be an issue with the cables being old or something - but if I unplug everything from my USB ports - it doesn't crash. So if you have a bunch of devices attached with USB - you might try unplugging them to see if it makes a difference.

Thats very unlucky. Ive been using my 1st gen M1 MacBook pro for years now as a professional software developer. I close the lid and use it for 8+ hours every day and it has crashed MAYBE 2 or 3 times since i got it.
I would wipe the drive clean and see if it stops crashing, that would indicate a software issue. If it still crashes on a clean install I would assume its hardware related, sounds like a broken product and I would try to get a warranty replacement.

    Hey Man!
Similar story here with my M1 Max 16“ mbp!
Finally after like almost three years I have the system running great. I had similar problems. Time Machine fucking up (I was in contact with mac developers) and many other problems.
As of usb A devices, as long as you have separate cables and devices, you can easily buy usb-c to usb type B cables. I have a few interfaces and other devices that I run this way no problems. Even managed to get the Time Machine Drive back running.
As for the iCloud issue, I reckon just putting one folder of the finder to iCloud (drive) and letting the rest of the file system locally. That way you can put things on iCloud that you actively need on all devices.
I can feel you about all of these issues! My UAD Apollo made so much trouble (at some stage the Thunderbolt card was broken) and I’m coming from the same 2014 15“ mbp which was running things better quite often 😮 I doubt that Apple silicon is really that much better when it comes to cpu power regarding loads of third party apps…
My journey included going from the mbp 15“ to a m1 air (as nothing pro was available yet) and the air was sooo much worse than my intel mbp. Only the M1 Max that I had to buy as one of the first was bringing light into the tunnel… but even now, I sometimes wish I could go back to Intel times🙏

Thanks for watching and I'm glad to hear you'd had success getting the bugs worked out. I'm running my Quad cortex, MOTU Ultralite MkIII USB and backup drive all through the same USB C hub. Do you think I should try different cables? Right now, when adding in the USB A iLok I'd def be over the amount of USB inputs on the laptop which was why I was using the USB hub in the first place. I def need to upgrade the MOTU, no doubt some of the system crashes have been because of that but I'm just tapped out right now and can't justify yet another expensive upgrade right now.

    Hello,
I can feel it really hard. That was an absolute disaster.
I am writing to you for two reasons. Firstly, I can't see how you suffer, and secondly, I would like to know for myself what and why it all went wrong.
II am happy to offer you my help.
What, according to your description, is quite certainly the problem is that one of the migrated kernel-close audio drivers leads to a blockage and the deadlocks. The thing has to boot in a maximum of one tenth of the time and only such drivers can cause a black screen and will also cause some problem with other devices.
It’s the reason new drivers aren’t allowed to run in kernel space any more.
I migrated the M1 Pro and also from Intel here, but as a developer it was clear to me that I should not migrate the apps but only account with data. Then I installed app per app fresh after figuring out which versions I’d need.
If I can reach you in any way (website, mail, etc.) I will be happy to write to you and hopefully find a solution together.
I would be happy to write a bug report to Apple with you, which will not only mention the problems, but also bring a suggestion for solving the problem.

2018-2019 Intel macs are getting cheap now - maybe get one of those as a backup unit - I have various plugins / instrument libraries and they def can be buggy - if you're porting across old saved files from Intel software, that's risky, or time-consuming I'm afraid - Apple Silicon is a different world - and smaller audio companies aren't going to spend time converting old software without more money to pay for it. It does sound like you might have faulty hardware on your hands actually. I'm sure Apple will replace that for you just give them a ring. The plugin compatibility thing, well yeah that's kind of the perennial problem I guess. It took Avid 2.2 years to roll out a native Apple Silicon version of Pro Tools for example. Not all developers are as cheap as Avid though and there is a lot of stuff out there that just works. M3 Macbooks have the misfortune of having to run Sonoma as well and there are a bunch of updates pending for that. I noticed NI released Sonoma compatible Kontakt version just the other week finally. Nearly every single complaint in this video-including compatibility issues with x86 apps, the vast majority of which run as well or even *faster* under Rosetta emulation-is *obviously* the result of a faulty unit. And you seemingly did absolutely nothing to address that, other than compile complaints for a UA-cam video?
"I'm also sick of getting a new version of [macOS] every fall." Ugh, how *dare* Apple give us updated software for free! You do, of course, have the option of staying on the previous version, which many people-particularly exalted professionals such as yourself-do without issue.
And I won't even go into the massive sense of entitlement, snootiness, and self-absorption that pervades this entire video. You aren't the only busy person with a job and kids, dude. Glad to hear you haven't had problems with yours, I'm not convinced it's just a lemon. The problems I'm having are bigger than that. Thanks for watching.

Watched unteil 7:00. You have a defective united. U should have stopped there, send it back an get a new one. I have a M1 Macbook, a M2 Pro, Macstudio. None of them have any problems. They also shut down in less than a minute.
With the execption of zoom, which is a f*** piece of sh*** everything works and does not crash. So again, defective unit! have it replaced, and about 80% of your problem are gone.
    Nice playing in between.
Oh, and dump icloud use dropbox.

If you watched more you'd see it's more than just a bad device. It def could be a lemon though but there's more to it than that. Thanks for watching and commenting though, I'll def take the tip on Dropbox! I've been using that to backup my USB drive and that's been working great so far.

Rule of thumb is that ANY computer, OS or APP is only good for about 4-5 years or about exactly what you got.

The audio software companies had to spend a lot of money to updating their software. You never bought an apple silicon compatible piece of software so getting it for free is not realistic. Apple was the only winner not those companies.

Only MAC people will buy a $4500 laptop and then trash talk the $1000 5-years older Windows laptop it replaced. How about you compare to a new $4500 Windows laptop instead.

I dunno. I superseded a 2020 Macbook Air (~$1500) with a 2023 Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 (~$1000 heavily discounted) and the Yoga is worse in almost every single way: battery life, trackpad, keyboard, no thunderbolt. These don't seem like big issues but it adds up to a shitty experience and so I've switched back to the Macbook for mobile use. *If* a Mac works well with the software you need, it is usually difficult to beat.

@@Hundredthldiot Totally agree, since M1, MAC performance has matched or even exceeded Windows laptops. But for the majority of history that has not been the case. Also if you add the need for more ram and storage MACs' prices shoot up way too fast putting them out of reach for most people to even consider as an option, and they become way worse value at that point.

@@why_though yeah, but what I've discovered from shopping for Windows laptops is that even the expensive ones can be crappy. If you can get by with 24GB ram, 500GB SSD and only one external display, an M2 MacBook Air is the best hardware under $2K in my opinion.
