There are plenty of historical vehicles with fixed forward facing cannon. Hetzer, STUG, etc, the Swedish S-Tank. Space Marine bikes also have fixed forward bolters. For an assault vehicle, moving towards the enemy, front facing isn't a problem for me.

I always liked the fw krieg tractors. Not sure what they were actually called but they looked like they could fit three or four kriegers and they had a heavy stubber on top. Doubt they were any good but they looked cool for sure.

Some 3rd party company used to sell a wheel conversion kit for the Taurox. If they're still around you could probably use a single kit to have enough wheels for two half tracks.

Might help, you'd also need to extend the rear track. Most of my problems with it come from it looking like a cartoony "chibi" version of a nonexistent real vehicle. It's way too stubby.

@@IHeart16Bit Yeah I agree, its too squished. I've looked at a few half track conversions of it and the rear track just isn't long enough. Although I do think it looks much better with the Victoria Miniatures wheels and suspension.

The Leman Russ is a great example of how to do the "something from history as sci-fi" idea. It's essentially an old world war one tank with a vaguely modernish turret on top. It means that you get all the associations with those old vehicles, the slow, lumbering, archaic, inexorable ideas that it invokes, which is exactly what you want for the imperial guard, whilst also looking different enough that you don't immediately think "oh that's just a ww1 tank with space lasers". It is, in my opinion, one of the best designs in all of Warhammer 40K.

My main issue with both basic squad boxes is that neither comes with all the special weapon choices. Catachan's only come with a flamer while the Cadian's get a flamer and grenade launcher. No plasma gun, melta gun, or sniper rifle in either. For those you have to buy metal blister packs where each mini is double the price of what a single figure from from either box costs. And the Catachan get overlooked as there is only a sniper pack meaning they have no plasma, melta, or grenade launcher version currently available (yes, I know there was a female Catachan with a grenade launcher, I own one). If those ever existed it's off to the depths of eBay if you want one.

I saw a Sentinel in my dad's copy of a White Dwarf when I used to see him. I was enamoured from the moment I saw it.
I was on holiday at his house over in the Netherlands and my Mum had given me a bit of money to spend over there, he took me to his local place to buy them and I got a Sentinel and a squad of Cadians as well as those two, old metal Cadian officers.
I've still, after like 20+ years, got that Sentinel. The first model of hundreds, the first spend of thousands. Its sat on a plinth at the top of my centrepiece cabinet, sided by a Warhound, the Void Dragon and Szerakh. Its own little place, really poorly painted but with its own dedicated stand.
That Sentinel, one of the unarmoured scout ones, means so much to me. It's not a good model stats wise, it's not the biggest and it sure as shit isn't my best painted.
But in terms of being the model that got me into this hobby, the embodiment of this shared hobby my dad and I used to do together and out of sheer awesomeness for me, it's untouchable.
For me at least, there isn't a better looking tabletop model on earth. Nor one that has such a special place to me.

Thanks for this range review. I agree with almost everything you say about this range. I think I have assembled so many Leman Russ tanks now that I can do it without instructions. They are just cool.
The Basilisk is also good looking still, a little pain to get the cannon placed correctly when building, but still looks good. The Hellhound is great, but could need a new version. Seems to remember them to be a ain to assemble to get the back to look good, and not to mention painting it... Aslo love the Super Heavy tanks, so looking forward to part 2.

Hull is the correct term, although chassis is fine. A lot of tank terminology comes from ships, the first tanks were called landships

The best template for human proportions are the less mutated GSC. And the fact that a XENOS range has better proportioned humans that the Guard is outright heresy

I love this range, just can't force myself to get into it because of the crazy number of models needed for a playable army. I learned my lesson after what felt like the millionth skink for my Seraphon army that I started just because I liked the look of the range.

I believe the Catachan and Cadian command squads came out at the same time, coinciding with the 5th edition codex.
Also, the flag dude with the janky mouth has a cigar. That's why he looks weird from that angle.

Of course the Leman Russ looks rustic and agricultural, iirc the thing is actually based on the STC for a tractor that someone in the Age of Strife decided to strap guns to.

Thanks for this range reveiw. I have been slowly collecting the components of a Guard army for almost 20 years. I have a love/ hate thing with their AFVs'. The Lemans Russ in particular. A tiny one man turret with a rediculous gun. One man couldn't conceivably load a 12 inch shell in ANY universe, sorry,, but it's stupid. And the size of the tank tells me it couldn't carry more than two rounds in the interior space. It needs to be Baneblade size to actually make a little sense! The Sentinel is a great kit, and I would get a couple Valkyries, and maybe some Chimeras, but the rest of the tanks just don't make any sense at all.
Infantry models need serious updating across the board. And bring back the various regiments, in plastic! The Scion models are good, but the box tries to cover too many options, with the command components being included.
Anyway, thanks again, and I look forward to your second installment on this range reveiw

Most of the vehicles are fine. Even the dodgy no suspension tracks. The Basilisk kit is the oldest and can be a shit to put together and the best vehicles candidate for a new kit. They could easily do 1 artillery kit that can make basilisk/hydra/wyvern/griffon and id love the option for enclosed crew compartment. The Taurox sucks but is relatively new so probably won't be changing anytime soon. The Catachans really are the main regiment needing a new infantry kit, though I'd love to see all regiments in plastic, and they could bundle regiments into box sets with upgrade sprues.

Most Russian tanks had solid placed guns that the driver operated rather than the gunner or radio operator. the driver would just aim the vehicle and shoot and it worked well for large crowds.. But yeah a mantel mounted weapon makes much more sense if you can pivot it.
Also the laz guns pointing out are similar in design to many APC's and can usually be moved to a point where they can be shot at least.. more guns are better usually, similar idea to a pistol port.

I’ve been kitbashing with the Catachan Infantry kit, and I will say the GW paint scheme really lets them down. The heads hold up very well under a modern paint job, and the only real bugbear is that you have to do a lot of custom gap filling with their arms: the shoulder join has a lof of sheer flat surfaces you can’t hide without green stuff.
