- Have you ever wondered what it is like a DAY in the LIFE of a PSYCHIATRIC NURSE PRACTITIONER? In this video, I will take you on a short trip to work with me and talk about what it is like a day in my role as a psychiatric nurse practitioner.
At the end of the video, you will learn what to expect in this role and how best to organize your day so that you can be an efficient and effective Nurse Practitioner.
Activities I do in this role includes: initial psychiatric evaluation, follow up treatments, psychiatric liaison support for the medical team, other administrative functions.
Get the basics of follow up evaluations/treatment and what is it you should KNOW & DO in order to help the patient in achieving emotional wellness.
Why having a scheduled routine ADMINISTRATIVE TIME is very important. It is a bit long but I promise you, it is worth it!

Thats something im having a hard time finding good info on. Answer a few questions like what do the schools expect from people applying? Scott 56 awww thank u so much! Yes I worked part time while in RN school and NP school. My teachers said I wouldnt be able to make it because of it, but someone has to feed my kids and it is not going to be them for sure. LOL! 🤪We have to do what we have to do though. Are you thinking of doing both?

If you are a RN with an associates degree, what is the best route to go to obtain my masters? Bridge program? BSN? What is the test/boards,exam that would have to be taken to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner? After becoming a RN and passed NCLEX-RN?
I really am interested in mental health, but I’m doing dialysis right now. I wonder if I can just go straight to PMHNP from being a dialysis RN?
What area did u work in as an RN? I'm debating on going back to school. I got into some FNP programs but later decided that it wasn't right for me (at least for now). Then I considered PMHNP, but I was never a psych nurse and i don't have professional experience in mental health. I was always interested in the field. I minored in it in college. Been exposed to the field in other ways. Is there something I should do to let myself know that I can do this kind of work on a daily bases? My worry is dealing with combative patients or addicts and not being able to de-escalate the situation if they become aggressive. I'm hoping that teach that kind of stuff in PMHNP school. I'm also not trained in psychotherapy, so I'm hoping they teach that as well.
Do you have to take work home? Or once you are done with patients for the day then that’s it?
So the most challenging part is the charting? Or the most time consuming part is the charting?

What makes an individual an expert? So that means they could see and use to seeing more than 12-16 patients
How much admin time would you advise us to ask for as new grads?
I am finishing my BSN next semester and this is my goal job. Where do you suggest I work after graduation?

I am afraid if I choose to do it and can't find a job, and the interest grows, I'll be in trouble :( by the way, do you need RN experience to become NP?
Got you! Yes it can be quite expensive if you have no RN to begin with. I did the post masters which was about 12k for the whole program which i thought wasnt too bad at all. I heard of a private programs that can cost close to 100k. It will be about finding the right program that will provide you the best education with the right cost and not put you in debt. Check out university of south alabama. Private schools that are accelerated programs are really expensive because of it being fast paced compared to the public university ones.
Now is it worth it? Getting the RN program and where I am now in terms of money situation? Yes definitely!!! I see tuition costs as investments since you are investing in YOU and your future. I started out being paid $7 per hr at a book store in 2001 and if I didnt invest in my education, I would still be paid minimum at this point. The choices in being an RN and the fields you can go into as well as the roles make it a very good career path.
