Just flew back home yesterday (could not sleep on the plane so I was a zombie) , so finished work and catching up with the youtubes .. really glad to have met you , I am also really glad I ran the race and even happier that I will never race it again 😂. I had not planned to BQ in that race and it was a good job. Loved it and loathed in at the same time. I agree with you're comments about the cups, I too was paturbed how people just dropped the cups where they finished but perhaps it's an American thing (I still always made sure my deposits were flung at the side of the road and I kept my empty gel wrappers with me )
I must have come back the day before. But it's all a blur. Delighted you got a PB...bodes well for future marathons! Great to see you and hopefully again before long/ already in detailed planning for Boston!
Brilliant review. Really enjoyed it. You brought back so many memories. I ran it this year also but I was by myself so it was great to hear another Irish mans story. I have to admit I enjoyed every second of it. The whole trip was a dream from start to finish. Thanks for sharing your story. If I may make one suggestion, it would have been wonderful if u got more footage along the route it would have added to your video. Easier said than done of course! Brilliant review nonetheless. Wishing you the very best.
Cheers Brendan. In the months before the race I made a loose plan to try to film the experience. Then as I got closer to the event I realised I couldn't wear a vest with carrying capacity for GoPro's. So i decided I would just run the race...and then halfway along I realised I got my food strategy slightly wrong, changed my mind and started to film, and had just enough space on the iPhone to get what I managed...it's why there is little footage of the start and the wonderful run over the bridge. But what a fantastically memorable day. Am running Boston next April and they have very restrictive filming regulations, so will run that, but whenever I do London I will do the same as New York, but will bring the GoPro's and get a lot more footage...Seasons Greetings!
That was my favourite video of yours ever, Barry. I agreed with everything you said and enjoyed my run (not race!) almost as much as you did! Your video brought back so many happy memories of the day. Funnily, I also got those amazing gloves from the expo. And the medal is the most stunning one I've ever got. Thanks for the shout outs in this video and congrats on your own race. Chapeau!
Well occasionally I get sent something to review. That’s not the motivation. I like the challenge of making the videos and the positive comments really keep me going…
This was brilliant. I felt like I was there with you the whole time. The super early start and wait around at the beginning is what puts me off doing NY. If I could get my head around that bit I would love to do it. I am considering Chicago for ‘25.
Thats really encouraging to hear. Thanks! The super early start messed with my timing with eating. Other than that it was okay. Chicago is great. You can stay near the start and rock up without difficulty...toilet queues are terrible, but other than that it's a great race. Lottery entries for 2024 are open and close Thursday November 16 at 14:00 US Central Time if you fancy doing it next year...
Not sure if you got into Chicago but I ran it in 2022. I was able to get the start easily and maybe waited about 40 minutes. I was also able to check a bag. Picking my bag up was easy, no long lines. If you like traveling, The Flying Pig in Cincinnati was a great race.
@@RichRuns909 I ran Chicago in 2021. I think I was the fastest Irish finisher…only because I was possibly the only one. Covid and all that. I like the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati and have been a few times so will indeed look up the race. Thanks for the head up!
Wonderful review Barry, I loved every moment of it, probably your best yet. It was so great you had the luxury to stop for actual food along the way, you reminded me of Kieran from the RunTesters who run the Danube last year in 67 days, and outside of Vienna, on mile 17 of the day he stopped for a schnitzel🤣. So happy to see you enjoyed this one so much, now on for the next one! What are the odds they were shouting "Emily" for RunlikeHell(er), she ran the race as well and she has many fans from her youtube channel.
So glad you enjoyed it Panos. Will try the same formula for Boston. I set up my Garmin for Boston an hour ago. It could have been Run Like Heller but I know what she looks like and I am not sure. Several people cheered me on by shouting Bandit, which as the brand of singlet I ran in. And I really enjoyed that
It was! If you have the chance to run New York do it! I made another video about the run up with lots of stuff in it about the race..Great to see you today!
Fantastic Video Review. Never ran this race, but now I know what to do and how to do it. Did you get to view the Bandit half-tights with 7 pockets (mentioned a while ago to you)? Can’t wait for your other videos. Thanks!!!
Meant to add (but had to take a call): Loved your reference to music. Got a few tunes by Justin Townes Earle (What do you do when you are lonesome). Your stopping and showing what you ate was Superb. Made me feel excited to do this race. Looked at your NYRR stats, your first half was nice, so you enjoyed the second half. Since you attend many events on Fri/Sat, you really had a long weekend of enjoyment. Remaining question: how long was the wait from the moment you get there via bus to the start? Did you enjoy the wait? Congrats on your enjoyment. Thanks!!!!
The bus arrived at a couple of minutes before 08:00. I didn't start running until 10:20. That suited me as I got to spend time with my fried Emmet, who by complete coincidence was in the same Wave at the same time. So I enjoyed the wait. But it was a long time after I got up until I started running and that had some effect on me and a few other people who had to alter their feeding strategy. It is a stunning day out and I really made the most of it. If you get the chance give it a whirl
Hi Barry, congrats for completing NYC Marathon. I actually checked you in the results and I was waiting for the review. Your video explained a lot that simple finishing time does not. I am glad you enjoyed your run. You didn't need a fast marathon as you have qualifying time already and adapted strategy. This was about completing another world major marathon and you did it and rather unconventionally by ordering food mid-way through it! Love it! Too bad you lost your salt tablets! 😅 I have mixed feelings about Maurten gels. I am testing them vs SIS Beta Fuel gels and I personally feels like SIS Beta fuel works better overall and I like the taste better vs bland taste of Maurten. Check it out on some training runs. BTW, did you get any Bandit 7 pocket running tight shorts that I told you about?
Yes. I got a pair in Black. Will run in them next week and will make a video at some stage. Very promising! I went to Bandit in Brooklyn. Well worth the trip. I tried SIS before and found the too sugary, but these may be different ones. Will have a look. I think I will do a lot of experimenting between now and Boston. I loved the peanut balls and jelly bean concoction I had in the Virtual New York marathon...must learn to make something...
@OldManRunner I tried a number of SIS gels. Not all are created equal. Of the regular ones I like "SIS Citrus flavor with Caffeine (75mg)". Citrus flavor is non-offensive and I goes well in the later states of a race. The new Beta Fuel ones are much better, however. In particular they have optimized Glucose:Fructose balance (1:0.8) so absorption is increased as Glucos and Fructose use different mechanisms. In comparison, Maurten is pure sugar. The only saving grace is that it is wrapped in hydrogel so it allows it to pass stomach and go directly to intestines. Well, at least that is what Maurten says. I did have GI issues on a long 20 mile run with Maurten.
@@OldManRunner Today I tried SIS Beta Fuel Chewables today on my 20 mile long run. I consumed 2 of them. Each one has 45g carbs. I took 1/3rd at a time. I had an extra one available but 2 was enough for the page I was running at (HR mostly in zone 2). These are similar to better known Cliff Blocks but higher carbs. I think they could be real alternative to gels.
The pillow-torso hack is genius

Great review as usual Barry. Glad you pivoted and decided to enjoy it. I should have done the same 😂.
Cheers Alex. Really hope to see you before too long! You ran a great race. Takes a lot of guts to put the hammer down in New York.
I took cheese sandwiches with me for my first marathon, with some gels(high5)..
Chocolate cake would have been nice to follow😂
I am going to try every conceivable option other than gels. The watch is already set for Boston!

Back home in Dublin now. Booked my flights for Boston!
Kind sir , you mean the queensboro bridge I/o Williamsburg bridge. I liked your video very detailed
I do seem to remember getting the bridge names mixed up. Had a wonderful time. Glad you enjoyed the video
I love the idea of stopping for a whopper sandwich mid marathon 😅. Fair play. Good video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Loved that sandwich…
Sorry but I love my Dunkin Donuts hat. Kept all 6 of them with all NYC Marathons I’ve done and wear them often 😊
That’s super. The hat itself is lovely. It’s the number of them that get thrown away after an our or so if use that I worry about.
