Nice video. Reassured me that I am currently not qualified for this service and will gladly pay a tech like yourself haha.. I am glad there are folks out there making this look easy
Really surprised that wasn't part of the video. Thought the exact same thing--always crack the fill plug first, then the drain. If there's a problem with getting the fill plug out you'll be in for a lot of headaches if you drained it first.
Great video, thank you! Doing this w the same fluid and filter you showed on the wife's Q5 tomorrow. Bookmarked this video to review if needed. Clear and to the point, thanks again
When filling the transmission fluid temp needs to be between 86°-122°F/30-50C to get the correct level. The proper procedure is to fill it as much as it will take cold, then crank the car, shift it and let it run, pump maybe 3-4 more quarts in then wait for the trans fluid temp to get between that range, then fill the rest till it runs out. Not adhering to the temp range you run the risk of under or overfilling it if you just guess.
He did say get it running up to normal temp, then go thru the gears. I wonder if getting it up to normal temp is between the 86-122 F you’re talking about
All your videos are super helpful. Question: it looks like the old bolts were used to reinstall the x brace. 90Nm + 90 or 130 degrees implies they should be replaced if removed as they have already been stretched? Also, it would be nice to have the torque specs for the non-face lift model.
For anyone looking to do this be very careful when torquing those transmission pan bolts. My torque wrench wasn’t working right and I snapped the head off of one of the screws.. luckily I was able to back it out!
Isn’t it typically good practice to ensure the fill plug comes out first before you remove the drain plug to make sure you will be able to fill it after you drain it? Or is that just a Chevy thing?
I got 78k miles Audi B8 Allroad, I believe it never changed the transmission fluid before. Should I just do the drain and refill or do you suggest the whole process with the new filter as the video? Because I heard some old vehicles got worse after the transmission fluid replacement. Thank you very much!
We suggest doing the same service as seen in the video. These transmissions require this service much more often than older ones so we do suggest going through the full service
I'm at 103 k and spoke to my dealer about it. I do ally servicing except for a water pump that went at 80k. He recommended that I just drive the car and not worry about changing the fluid. How many miles will I get if I do that? I want to go 300k.I love this car. 2017 Q5 3.0V6
If you have the money, do it. Dont follow what they say. They say an oil change every 15000km here, we all know that we should do it at 8k but people buy them new and do the less amount of maintenance and trade them 4 years after so they dont care, now they all have oil consumption problems. I would say, change it and you'll be secure about the fluid being effective.
From what I understand, you can never get all the transmission fluid to drain out? If you’re using the Liquimoly ATF, wouldn’t that mix with the OEM ATF? Isn’t that bad to mix ATF of 2 different brands? Thanks in advance
This was super helpful! What’s the X brace torque on a non facelift?I’d like to see how to remove a 14 Q5 headlight… I tried all kinds of ways and could never get it to come out.
Hi, I just had the ATF filter changed at local garage but the car then became jerky downshifting gear 5 to 1. Could it be the mounting? Never had this issue before.Thanks.
How many miles should you do the transmission fluid? I have a 2016 4 cylinder with around 80 000 milles and the drakes told me I don’t have to do one until the maintenance light comes on?
They recommend 75k miles. I recently did mine at 144k miles with new filter and fluid (1st time). Cost me around $700. In another 30k miles gonna only do the drain/fill with fluid only.
Two questions. How can you possibly use all 9 bottles on a filter change? How can you go through all the gears with no actual vehicle speed? My filter change took 3.5 liters. Had to drive my car around the block to manually engage ALL gears.
@@mrmartin2079. It’s a drain and fill not a complete flush. If you are gonna do it buy the filter/gasket and 6 bottles, don’t buy the kit they recommend that comes with 9 bottle and a drain plug that cost $15 when you can use the old oem one.
Should be, yes. They primarily use the 8-speed ZF (one serviced in the vid) other than a few models (not sure which exactly, hybrid may be different) that use a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Someone help! What tf kind of spec is 4nm? Cant find a torque wrench anywhere nor have I ever seen one that goes that low. Can someone send me a link to a torque wrench that goes that low?
Wow! Not as easy as I thought. Especially without a lift. Putting on ramps will not be level. So 4 jack stands is the only way to be able to run through gears. Trans service is well over $500. 😔
@@gavinvalverde2538 Absolute ripoff. Was this from the dealer? I had mine serviced in a medium cost of living area for ~$600. I would not entertain anything above $800 even in a high COL area.

Nice vid! Quick tip: crack open your fill plug before draining--imagine not being able to fill your transmission w/no fluid in it?
Really surprised that wasn't part of the video. Thought the exact same thing--always crack the fill plug first, then the drain. If there's a problem with getting the fill plug out you'll be in for a lot of headaches if you drained it first.
And they used same drain plug. I thought they were replaced with new ones and heard fill plug should have new o-ring installed too. 🤷🏻♂️

Hi,
Great video. I wanted to ask if the transmission needs a reset after changing the oil ?
Did the audi take all 9 quarts... I did a transmission fluid change on my 2009 audi q5 prestige 3.2 and it oil took 7 quarts .
From what I understand, you can never get all the transmission fluid to drain out? If you’re using the Liquimoly ATF, wouldn’t that mix with the OEM ATF? Isn’t that bad to mix ATF of 2 different brands? Thanks in advance
How many liters total did you use I seem to only get about 5.5L in after the initial fill and runing through the gears.
My audi only took 7 after removing pan
I needed a 12 and 10 mm triple square on my 2011 Audi Q5. I went and bought a set with the 14 mm. 😬
Couldn’t you have suctioned the fluid through the fill plug?
If that’s possible feel like it would make the job much easier..
