  • Back at it again! Out to the New Brockton Armory for more aluminum fire ant hill goodness. This time around Denise and I had two visitors, Denises's daughter Amber and a buddy Matt. Matt is in the process of building his own foundry to continue on the lower Alabama ant killing spree as i will be moving out of the area soon. More to follow on the move in the not to distant future.

    When my truck broke down inTX (1970) I pulled over on the shoulder and got my repair kit out. It was vapor-locking, the way to fix it was to soak a rag with ice water from the cooler and wrap it around the fuel pump to cool it down.
    I did not realize that I had parked over a red ant bed. No sooner had I managed to wrap the pump than I started feeling awful stings, all over my back, my legs, and in my crotch. I scooted our from under that old Chevy and I was running down the road in the moonlight, hollering, ripping of my clothes, underwear included. Sure enough, a Deputy Sheriff drove down that “Farm Road,” just as I was doing my striptease-he thought I was crazy until he shined his light on me and said he counted about 50 welts, just on my back. He held his light for me so I could check my clothes for ants, gave me a tube of salve from his first aid kit, and while I got dressed he ran my license, plates, etc.
    I’m sure this was the subject of a lot of good stories down at the station.
    NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO TO FIRE ANTS, ITS NOT ENOUGH!!!

      Depending on the ph level of the water and the type of fish it could kill the fish through aluminum toxicity

    • @shammydammy2610
      @shammydammy2610 8 років тому +13

      Incorrect: The toxicity of aluminum has been studied extensively in fish, less so in invertebrates, amphibians, and birds, and not at all in reptiles and free-ranging mammals. For aquatic organisms, Al bioavailability and toxicity are intimately related to ambient pH; changes in ambient acidity may affect Al solubility, dissolved Al speciation, and organism sensitivity to Al. At moderate acidity (pH 5.5 to 7.0), fish and invertebrates may be stressed due to Al adsorption onto gill surfaces and subsequent asphyxiation. At pH 4.5 to 5.5, Al can impair ion regulation and augment the toxicity of H+. At lower pH, elevated Al can temporarily ameliorate the toxic effects of acidity by competing for binding sites with H+. Aluminum toxicity in aquatic environments is further affected by the concentration of ligands such as dissolved organic matter, fluoride, or sulfate, and of other cations such as Ca and Mg which compete for cellular binding sites. Although risk of Al toxicity is often based on a model of free-ion (Al3+) activity, recent evidence suggests that factors determining Al toxicity may be more complex. In general, aquatic invertebrates are less sensitive to Al toxicity and acidity than fish; thus acidified, Al-rich waters may actually reduce predation pressure. Fish may be affected by asphyxiation at moderate acidic conditions or electrolyte imbalances at lower pH. In amphibians, embryos and young larvae are typically more sensitive than older larvae. Early breeding amphibians, which lay eggs in ephemeral ponds and streams subject to spring runoff, are most at risk from Al and acidification; those that breed later in the year in lakes or rivers are least vulnerable. Birds and mammals are most likely exposed through dietary ingestion of soil or Al-contaminated foods. Concentrations > 1000 mg.kg-1 in food may be toxic to young birds and mammals. Clinical signs in these animals are consistent with rickets because Al precipitates with P in the gut. Suggestions for additional research on the ecotoxicology of Al to wild animals are provided.

    • @shammydammy2610
      @shammydammy2610 8 років тому +22

      TL:DR Aluminum can be quite toxic to fish. Any aquarist knows this and takes appropriate steps to limit the amount of aluminum present in tank water, and avoid aluminum aquarium fittings, especially for fish that require an acidic water.

    Pretty cool to see what an actual fire ant mound tunnel system looks like. Never knew it was that extensive.
    I find the comments about how cruel this is to be kinda strange. I have no problem dumping fire ant killer on these mounds. Molten aluminum is a much quicker death.

What a good idea could be, take a large fire blanket, and go to a tailor and let him or her make a overpant, closed with 'pressbuttons'on the sides, so you kan rip it off when molten metal drops over it.

In Canada they have a similar problem with European fire ants(which I keep) as they thrive in temperate climates just as Asian fire ants love warm/tropic climates
