The Jamaican relays team from St. Catherine had a rough second exchange with a big wipeout on the rail during the 2022 Penn Relays 4x100m heats.

My heart goes out to my Jamaican brethren that fell on the rails.
Hopefully he'll recover & he and his teammates will remember to keep an eye out for that rail.

That's why champs is the best..that race might have been for the small schools though but still.
For anyone wondering, the rails are specific to this one track in Pennsylvania. It is there because when they expanded the track for the relays they couldn't push outwards like normal due to the historical brick wall you see around the track. So instead, they put more lanes on the inside and ended up with lanes 1-3 being less than 400m. So the rails are there for races like 4x4, 4x8, etc so athletes on the inside lanes cut out and athletes on the outside know to stop in lane 4 when cutting in. For all intents and purposes, lane 4 on this track is the true lane 1 and the last lane that's a full quarter mile.
Thanks for the information about the rail. I think all they needed to do is add more heats instead of more lanes.....hmmmmmm!

I always wonder why they kept them? It can’t be because of history? They upgraded the track but kept the damn rails? Come Penn Relays get with the times. Those rials weren’t even supposed to be there in the 90’s!

My age old question is. Why is the Pennsylvania track deferent from all other tracks? This rail has been a constant danger to the athletes
they wanted to add more lanes for the sprints but since theres a brick wall they cannot extend outwards. because of this, they added three lanes to the inside of the track and the true 400 meter loop is in lane four. its not all “pennsylvania tracks” just franklin field lmfao

Back in 98' I ate it hard at Penn in the boys 4x4 during the handoff but we made the finals and placed well. Luckily that was before regular video so it's not on UA-cam 😬.

I'm wondering how many of the athletes should sustain injuries before these people at Penns find a replacement for that metal separator... 🤔smh. I hope that young man is doing okay.
My question is what the hell a rail doing on a track where the Runners are running that don't make no sense.
I've never heard of so many people, both athletes and volunteers falling because of this rail. Some seriously hurting themselves. It has been there for a long time but this year, one too many people fell because of it. The silver color of the metal and the sun reflecting off of it doesn't help at all. They have to do something about it for next running.
What kind of dangerous track is that for the athletes. whey they don't have a modern track, I never like the penn relay track how they set it up. I have never seen any fun track like that, only in america.

Rails always present clear and present danger..ALWAYS. Stop putting athletes at risk like that so they can focus on performance rather than avoiding injury... just find a way to do more heats or something.
