In any dance concert the dancing is for your eyes and the music is for your ears. Dancers often have spectacular music accompanying them but you won't see the dancers leaving the stage and letting the musicians take over. But in the metal genre there are rarely dancers and metal fans usually focus on the musicians, so they have to make an adjustment when watching Babymetal. Babymetal is not a typical metal band.

I had to come to terms with this too a few years ago in 2018. If you don't like that the girls are the focus, then this band is not for you. Kamis are hired hands. They know their roles. They know what they signed up for. If they are up there playing, then that means they are cool with it. Not every musician wants the fame and attention. Some just like playing on stage in front of people, and that's good enough for them. The girls are, and were always the focus.

Thanks for coming back with more BM songs and this time with another special song from their 2nd album Metal Resistance, and this one is even more meaningful, this song was performed previous to last and ending the show.
Nice you put some watermarked logo to avoid being blocked, don't worry about it, fans already know the clean version.
It took several years for KobaMetal (the producer and mastermind of this group) to create this progressive metal song along with "The One" which is the next song, he's a Dream Theater fan. This song was performed only one time at Tokyo Dome 2016 with 55K fans witnessing this special and one of a kind live concert, people from all over the world attended this two nights performing their entire catalogue by that time from 1st and 2nd album, only song they didn't performed was From Dusk Till Dawn.
There's a lot of crazy transitions and dope time signature changes. Is one of the hardest song they ever performed, even some troubles suddenly happened when performing this but fortunately they made it through like a real pro. I always love the reaction over that piano section with the cutesy dance moves.
The piano outro is no other than "The One" melody announcing the next song with this peaceful bridge. Both songs were originally part of the same song but it was split in two parts. The One is a song dedicated to all of us their fans, we're The One, and that should be the perfect follow up, although isn't a progressive metal song, more like hard rock ballad with progressive rock.
The Kami Band members this night are: Mikio Fujioka (R.I.P.) and Takayoshi Ohmura on guitars, BOH on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums. Remember according to the lore all of them were send to help the girls with the metal sound. This time you're watching their regular costume back then wearing burial white robes and corpse face paint representing those spiritual entities.
Glad you liked this one, there's a reason for this performed only one time and that should stay that way for everyone who witnessed this special moment in BM career.
    Next suggestion:
    - Rondo Of Nightmare with Mischiefs Of Metal Gods Intro live at Budokan 2014, "Kawaii Metal" got this safe to react, no filters are necessary.
    See you next time🦊🤘🔥

About your last question about why they spot the girls instead of the band, ask you this: what are they giving us different than any other metal band if they only spot the band without the dance choreo and the girls hyping the crowd at live concerts?
Make no mistake, we love the Kami Band and they're phenomenal musicians but they wouldn't be noticed around the world if weren't by the talent of these girls, they know about it, and btw they're also playing a role persona up there, that's why they're not credited as official members, i know that's a concept westerners are not used to it but there were already bands with such unique mystic and lore before like Seikima-II and they're living legends among Japanese. Here in the west there's another one called Ghost doing something similar but without dancing. Like you said BM is a whole experience, is the complete package like no one did before, called it Cirque Du Solei or Broadway show, they're trying to tell you a story and that wouldn't be possible with only the music, think like a movie, you could say you don't care about the director, the producer, script, the technicians, the lights, the choreographer, the soundtrack, you just care about good actors, right? I don't think you think that way, BM is a whole project and everyone knows their role, it was formed around SuMetal powerful vocals and she's so humble that she wouldn't conceive staying there without the help of the core members such MoaMetal, although YuiMetal was a big lost for the whole group, but they fight for this and that's why they got the spot and love they deserve.🦊🤘❤

Babymetal shows are kind of like Michael Jackson shows. Even if MJ had amazing musicians backing him up the focus was always on him and same goes for babymetal. Babymetal has a large team behind them who writes the songs for them (the girls have lyric credits for two songs song 4 and Divine Attack) The musicians backing them up (Kami Band) don't write any of their songs either or play on the studio albums. They only play in the live shows. When babymetal started they didn't even have anyone playing the instruments in their liveshows since they couldn't afford to have a live band early on so the girls were singing and dancing and the music was coming from a backing track.

It’s just how things are done in the Japanese culture. The producer who started the band, had a love for heavy-metal and Japanese Pop music. So he decided let’s try to combine them and see what happens. They didn’t have a band when they first started out. They were too poor and couldn’t afford one. When they started to get popular is when they added a band. We all have our personal preferences. This is the way they do theirs.

@@Jordan-Ramses yup…I totally understand that. Whether it’s this Kami band, or the original writers…my point is still the same. This is less about the actual music, and more about the performance of the 3 ladies. That’s where I have the trouble. As a musician…to me the music always comes first. And here, it seems no one cares who or where the music came from. That’s where I’m not totally sold. I’m reacting to music first and foremost…but with Babymetal…it’s like I have to react as if the ladies are what comes first. When in essence, to me, if there’s no music (no matter who’s playing/writing it) then Babymetal is nothing. They need the music to even be able to do what they do, since they aren’t the ones writing any of it. Kind of like a lot of pop artists are really only as good as their producers. (Not all, of course). But this is the same concept. And that’s why many pop/hip hop producers are so highly recognized. Because without them…the artists who are simply given the song and lyrics to perform, become just a vessel to get the music across. Anyways…that’s just my own opinion. Music is so subjective that none of what I say is right or wrong…it’s just my own perspective.
What we can agree on is that as a performance, it looks like it’s a lot of fun!

    @jeremyboynowski3784 Рік тому +31

I don't think people from the Babymetal community will bash you. We're a pretty good group for the most part. How do I explain this. First I will go by saying there ARE songs where the musicians get a chance to shine. Rondo of Nightmare with Mischief of gods intro, Catch Me If You Can, Yava with Kamiband intro, are the 3 that comes to the top of my head immediately. As for the girls being front and center. Yes you are right, for the most part, they are. In fact the concept OF Babymetal focused around Su-Metal, the main vocalist after the person who created Babymetal heard her sing. So Babymetal was already created "backwards" in a sense. Where most bands form with the musicians and then find a singer, this is a band that created the band around the singer. So the singer was the first. The 2 dancers do indeed have mics as well, but instead of hand mics like Su has, they have face mics that attach on their heads, kinda similar to what you'd see when you go through a drive thru at a fast food joint.
Another thing that should probably be said is that while in theory Babymetal is just the 3 girls as you stated, the girls themselves don't view it that way. To them Babymetal is them, the band, AND the fans. You'll see the girls love getting the fans involved, and they love showing the fans how much they mean to them too. You can see that if you react to Babymetal The One Official. That is actually the next tie-in song to this song that you just reacted to. Originally they were one song, but then they became 2 songs. Thus the piano at the end, it is slowly transforming into the next song, The One. Incidentally that is what Babymetal calls its fanbase. So this song is actually their love song to their fans. They have 2 versions of this song. The version where they sing it in part English and part Japanese, and another version where they sing it solely in English out of respect to all the international fans who learned how to sing the Babymetal songs in Japanese. Su and the girls were very humbled and amazed that people were learning the Japanese lyrics just to sing with them, so they wanted to do the same for the fans.
All in all, I think a lot of Babymetal fans would LOVE to see more of the Kamiband perform during these recordings, but Amuse (the company that pretty much owns Babymetal) wants to focus almost solely on the girls, which I can also understand. I think a lot of fans will understand what you're trying to say and will agree with you to a large extent.
Lastly, as for reading the lyrics, obviously you can if you'd like but Su has actually stated that the lyrics aren't as important to her. She wants people to be able to FEEL the meaning of the song and so she does her best to express the appropriate emotion through the music. She takes a lot of pride in being able to do that well.

If you go to a Babymetal concert, the ladies are so magnetic in person they just grab your attention. After a couple concerts you can start to see other things. As far as how it works, yes there's a producer, Kei Kobayashi, but he doesn't say when they record a song. That comes from Su-metal, the lead singer. They don't do a song until she says. Su-metal also directs the mix. Koba says she is quite sophisticated with it.
On stage in the show, Moametal makes sure everyone is in the right spot doing the right thing and corrects them if they're not. For choreography it starts with what the girls envision, and they have a choreographer who refines their ideas into a routine. Finally attitude, Su has a saying "full throttle forward" and it just permeates the band. Boh the bass player says its the only band when he has been asked to play louder.
So don't get fooled by the cute. The girls are integral to the song creation. That being said. I and a lot of fans wish the Kami had more presence in the show. But having seen them a bunch of times, it's sensory overload as it is. The show starts and it ends, and it seems like 10 minutes have passed, but it's been 90

Every girl has a microphone. Yui and Moa both do backup vocals. Not a lot during this song, more during other songs.
"What do you watch?" It does not matter.
The first time you watch a song, you miss at least half the visuals anyway. To fully appreciate the visuals, you need to concentrate on different parts every time you watch it. Having said that, the girls lead your eyes. They make you look to where you are supposed to. If you allow them to.
    How does this work?
Start with three very good dancers, one of them an excellent vocalist. Add one of the best choreographers there are on this planet(*). Get several people to write songs which makes them all different. Once you generate some income, hire world class musicians to replace the backing track. Or most of the backing track. When you earn more money, build elaborate stages. Combine this with very good sound and lighting technicians. What do you get? BABYMETAL.
The people involved in production are at least very good at their respective jobs. Such a staff is not easy to get. KOBAMETAL (Key Kobayashi; management; the one with the idea) is very picky when it comes to hiring people. Let's face it: The girls are so good at what they do(**), they need and deserve the best people to work with so noone is holding them back.
(*) Maybe the best. The jury is still out on this one.
(**) Which is 1) crowd interaction, 2) singing and 3) dancing. In order of importance. Not that dancing were not important. It is essential. Only the other two are more important.

Less so in recent years (it's a Whole Thing), but historically, the band has been much more visible, and they often have 'intros' to certain songs where they are literally highlighted and take turns showing off. Amore and Akatsuki, at least, both have the band spotlighted during in-song solos. This song was a little different than their usual in that it was more about the music itself and less about the performance (typically, almost everything they do is with a live performance in mind). They've also only ever performed this once live, and this was a very special and very massive concert. It would make more sense for this particular song for the band to get more screen time, but with the set up for this concert and uniqueness of the moment, I get why they weren't, even though it's a shame. It also rolls directly into The One, which very much is intended to have a focus on the girls as they connect with the audience, since the song was written as a love letter to the fans.
BabyMetal is a machine, though, and with the exception of the girls and a few others behind the scenes, a lot of the moving parts rotate in and out. It's more musical theater than it is a traditional band. And like any large theatrical production, different people step into various roles at various times, but the core product remains the same. BabyMetal is a theater company built to design spectacles around the girls (and Su-Metal in particular, tho the others are just as beloved).
Also thought I'd mention that Su records her own backing vocals, but the other girls do have mics, but their parts are more removed and often chanty or call and response. Typically the parts they sing are the parts designed for the audience to sing along with. They do sometimes sing harmonies with Su, but for the most part, they don't do what one would typically consider 'back up' singing. Technically, their roles are Scream and Dance. ... They are hype girls.

Great reaction, I think most fans want to see a bit more of the band on occasion. When they release a live video, the most common complaint is we want more band shots. In past performances, the band have had moments in the spotlight, I recommend Rondo of Nightmare (w/ Mischiefs of Metal Gods Intro) LIVE at Budokan Black Night.
As for the inner workings, there is a team of composers that write the music with input from the girls, tho the girls have only been given credits on 2 songs. While some may see this as a bad thing, I quite like their honesty, they could easily just give them credits for minimal work like a lot of labels do.

They perform for the audience not the cameras, if you are at the show and want to watch the band you are absolutely free to do that, these videos are the equivalent of peeping through a crack in the door. Having said that the girls are Babymetal, they were there before the band, they employ the band as well as the camera guys and they are the ones who put bums on seats and make all this possible. The musicians are great and we love them and think of them as a part of the Babymetal team, but they don’t write the music they don’t play on the studio recordings and when you go to a show you have no idea who will be playing the instruments it could be one of a group of musicians for example they gave five different guitarists that they currently use, but the same three girls will always be there.

You make a great point about them performing for the audience and not for the cameras. I sometimes assume the band is so hidden away even the live crowd can't see them, speaking about the arena shows, but that might be a false assumption. Even with that, the masks still hide the band, even from the live audience.

@@chrisharris1522 Your assessment is wrong. In fact, of the two bands, it's actually the western Kami band that gets the most spotlight, even as far back as The Forum LA Blu-ray. That persists today with the eastern Kami band getting absolutely zero spotlight at all on camera during the January MM23 concerts, while the western Kami band at PIA in April were not only positioned in a quite viewable location, and featured on camera while playing, but even got spotlighted in the two music videos from that concert.
What is clearly happening is a phasing out of the eastern Kami band since when they turned down the offer to tour with Babymetal in 2019, and the masks are to prevent a major backlash when a completely different band shows up.

good question, I also asked like that when I first saw them, but after a while I thought whether this was really the show they were trying to offer, because if you look at their early history, they were a "band" trying to combine cute sound with metal accompaniment and it turned out that the market in Japan really liked it, and this "band" grew bigger and bigger so that finally the producers "hired" reliable musicians as replacement tracks and actors who pretended to be musicians, and these real musicians were actually given special time to shine in several songs such as Rondo of Nightmare (with KAMI intro), Catch Me If You Can, Kagerou, and many more, especially on their early albums

As is clear, Babymetal isn't a regular (metal) band, the girls are at the center. But you need to know more about their origin to know why they are. Babymetal was started by a producer, he used to work with bands, but bands in general in Japan were not doing well. Just like rock/metal in the west used to be more popular. So the company asked him to work in the kids department, with girls. He noticed one of the girls is a very good singer, lots of talent, lots of training, but an unusual loud style of singing. He thought: maybe she is to good for Japanese pop, she has a different talent and he wanted to work with her. One of the ideas he had was: what if he can do the loud metal music with her loud singing voice. But the company obviously didn't want to fund such a thing, after all rock/metal wasn't as popular anymore. But eventually as part of a bigger project, he was allowed to work with her and make a group. This way their was no financial risk to the company as no real investment was made. Just using some existing resources. So the producer (and choreographer) and the girls, who really were just kids: 11, 11 and 12 years old, were their only asset and they worked hard. Yes, the little lady in the center, who is called Su-metal is where everything was build around.

This songs was the first every performance, so the music is known from the album, but the choreography has never been shown, so I think that's why the ladies are the vocal point. Sadly it also is the only time this song was performed, probably because it's the hardest song to perform live of any Babymetal song because of all the time signature changes, etc.

I get what you're saying about the band, but the perspective I take is that it doesn't matter how good you are as a metal musician in Japan, you have effectively zero chance of breaking out on the world stage...without some sort of gimmick. That's the deal that these musicians took, and as the band for BABYMETAL they've been able to tour the world, and play at festivals with all of their heros, and share a stage with Metallica, Rob Halford, GnR, and the Red hot Chilli Peppers. If they were in a band that didn't focus on the gimmick the way they do, none of that would have been possible. All you need to do is think of all the other Japanese bands that are big enough to tour the west every year...there effectively aren't any. It's not perfect, but the reality is that there isn't much of a market in the west for technically talented Japanese metal musicianship on it's own.

Both Yui and Moa have mics and they did do vocals during this track (also remember it's a whole concert, and you're seeing one song from it) - remember "THREE TWO ONE THREE TWO ONE, ZERO?" :P
KOBA-METAL is the producer you talk about.. he's the one that came up with the band and formed it.. and is involved with orchestrating all the songwriting and so on. And yeah, in general I agree. Sometimes the girls/kami-band camera coverage is normal, and sometimes it's a bit annoying.
To be honest it's worse these days than it used to be - as for long overseas tours BABYMETAL now uses a secondary kami-band called "Kami's of the West", so we don't always get to see the amazing original Kami Band. It should also be mentioned though, that one of the guitarists from this video passed away in early 2018. However the Kami Band always had extra backup members for each slot. Since the Kami's of the West got brought into the mix Koba has instigated those masks that you saw.. and I hate it personally as I love seeing the expressions on the faces of the musicians. I'm not sure if he's thinking to copy Ghost, or thinking we'll notice the difference less between East/West bands with masks, but it's frustrating

Its long been a lament of many BABYMETAL fans that the Kami Band is always in the background like they are. Sometimes they get a minute to shine, like in some of the intros to songs in the past, and sometimes during breakdown call and response moments, but for the most part their role has been visually marginalized for the last few years, especially when this group (the Eastern Kamis) were mostly replaced in live touring by the Western Kamis.
Nowadays they wear masks are rarely ever seen or focused on. Its like I said in my recommendation last week, this is the absolute pinnacle of their musicianship and honestly a pure instrumental would have been a treat here. But thats what their producer (Kobametal) is doing, hes fusing so many elements that oftentimes there is so much going on at once you cant even properly follow it.
One of my favorite songs by BABYMETAL is called Syncopation, a proggy but power metally piece with great vocals and choreo to go with it (seriously what the girls do dancewise is insane in most songs, full on fitness workout level), but the instrumental track itself is the best part of the song.
A lot of the reactor commenters will probably tell ya now to watch Rondo of Nightmare w/ Kami Band Intro or Kagerou with Kami Intro, as those are examples of what I have said before. Good moments for the band before the girls (or in the case of rondo, just Su the lead singer) come out to perform the actual song. Maybe 15-20 seconds each guy to get a solo moment, a little shreddy, a little bass tappy, some drum trickery, and then right into the classic BABYMETAL sound.
So no, youre not wrong, a lot of us wish the instrumentalists were getting more love, but unfortunately ever since Mikio died (the guitarist in this song with that insane solo you probably are thinking of where Moametal was in front of him and you couldnt see him) they really have kinda drifted further to the background as others have replaced them and rotated out.
Unfortunately they are not "members" of the band, but session musicians, and as time goes on, the OG Eastern Kamis make fewer and fewer appearances, though the current main lineup of Western guys is really solid in their own way (they did Mirror Mirror, for example)
So check out pretty much any BABYMETAL with either Kami Band Intro or Mischiefs of the Metal Gods attached to the title and thats the moments they get to shine.

I understand exactly what you are saying. If you watch the non-logo video (you can find the link in the description under the video with the logo) you will see that they actually do make a point of showing Mikio Fujika (RIP) when he is playing the guitar solo as well as seemingly focusing on the girls dancing.
Wave Potter is another guitarist and multiple instrumentalist who does reactions and he was just like you, wanting to see the instrumentalists and what they were doing, how they were playing etc ... until quite recently it finally clicked for him that the choreography is actually a hugely important element and is key to what sets BABYMETAL apart and what makes them special. In his more recent reactions he realised (to his own surprise) that he has increasingly started looking to see what the girls are doing.
I would consider myself mainly a metalhead and I never had any interest in choreographed dancing - I still don't. It is meaningless and pointless and I don't care about what the dancers are doing. It just gives us some scantily clad girls (or boys) to watch, to titillate and to take our minds off the bland music they are gyrating around to.
The one exception for me is BABYMETAL. Their choreo actually serves some real purposes, it is not standard dance moves taken from the grab-bag of contemporary dance. Their choreo is bespoke for each song, it is directly related to or aimed at interpreting a lyric or the meaning of the song. Perhaps even more importantly it is designed to involve and include the audience, to give them cues to when to jump, pump their fists, shout, join in a chant or whatever.
Obviously you are only able to react to the videos of performances. Most are taken from the BluRays and as BABYMETAL is Su-metal, Moametal and Yuimetal in this instance, Su, Moa and Momometal in the new ones, the camera focus will always be mainly on them.
There are songs with guitar solos and instrumental breaks where the Kami Band gets more attention (for example 'Akatsuki' and 'Amore' or the songs already listed in the comments with Kami Band instrumental intros) and you will see in those videos what you were wanting to see in this one.
If you go to the live shows the Kami Band are clearly visible and putting on a show too, being brilliant on their respective instruments, jumping round and enjoying themselves, not as pushed back and hidden in the shadows as the videos would suggest or that many commenters would have you believe. The girls are front and centre and they are the main focus of course, but if you are there you can watch whatever aspect interests you the most, that includes the Kami Band.
I am surprised you didn't hear Yui and Moa singing in this one, they had quite a big vocal input in comparison to some songs. Their headset microphones are not just for show. Obviously Su is the lead vocalist (the whole concept of BABYMETAL was formed and developed around her vocal talents and her stage presence - you may hear some harmonies she has pre-recorded in some songs but her main vocal lines are just her singing live), but again, along with the choreo, Yui and Moa (or Moa and Momoko now) are a huge and crucial part of what makes BABYMETAL unique and stand out.
You will become more accustomed to the way BABYMETAL do things the more you watch and listen to them, but that can take time. They really do take some getting used to because they don't do things the way we are used to things being done by virtually every other band. They are different, they are a one-off, they are original and innovative. They do put on a whole show, their concerts are not just concerts, they are a complete experience.
I have been going to and enjoying concerts since the 70s and I have seen some of the recognised great live bands in their prime. It is hard to beat the likes of Led Zeppelin musically, but the BABYMETAL concerts I have been too were by far the most entertaining.
Keep exploring them, maybe what they do and how they do it will suddenly make sense for you in the same way it has for Wave Potter - either way it will be a fun ride.

11:36 yes, it's the "Pop" side of Babymetal.
The girls and musicians are only interpreters, they have a shadow team making the music. In an interview recently, Kobametal talked about how Su and Moa are more presents now when composers make the songs. Su metal wrote the lyrics for "Divine Attack" and (in the past) Yui & Moa wrote the lyrics for "Song 4" but usually they don't work in the composition (even musician on stage). This may change in the future, the girls say in some interviews that they want to be more involved in the process.
The pop music industry works that way. Composer making music awesome and people on the stage finish the job.
Musicians only have one moment when they play own creations. In the Solos when some songs starts, for example: "Catch me if you can" "Yava! (Big Fox Festival)" "Kagerou", and others. Also, kami band have one song played in the BABYMETAL's concerts called "Mischiefs of metal gods" this song usually was played before the song "Rondo of Nightmare"

They were conceived as a dance unit, to dance to heavy music, when they were 11,11,&12 years old (shown here 17,17,18). The producer picked the singer specifically because she, at 12, already had 8years stage experience and a successful signed act, and a voice to pierce the cacophony. They’re pro Entertainers, she’s a trained voice. But they’re a dance act. The live band joined them after 3years and finally meshed those who loved the albums with those who loved the Idols (it’s a tough Japanese culture point, but think Mickey Mouse club, Timberlake & Selena Gomez). It’s designed as a stage show, by a producer who loves (our) good hard music. The productions are amazing, live or CD. But it’s broadway, the music’s only one element to them… 🤷‍♂️

A brief look at the Live Music Performance and the Kami Band.
Originally, Babymetal danced to Backing Tracks as they were part of the whole 'JPop-Idol' scene and that was how that side of things worked. As they gained traction and money started to flow in, they hired 'Actors' to pretend to play intruments behind the girls..they were called "Babybones" and were dressed in the Skeleton costumes.
More time passed and popularity grew and their Managment Company, Amuse Inc., threw more money into the group and they hired some Musicians to play Live during their Encore set, or final few songs of their performances. They called these players the "Kami Band" or 'God/Spirit Band'.
A major turning point was during the "Legend 1997 Apocalypse" show on December 21, 2013 as they Transistioned from Idol group to a full blown Metal Act. The progression of the concert followed their 3 year progression by starting the concert with Backing track Music and Lip-syncing, followed with songs "Played" by 'Babybones' (last time Babybones ever played) that were getting progressively heavier, and finally for the 5 song encore the Kami Band played Live and they have been the Live Band behind Babymetal ever since.
It is Important to note at this point the Kami Band are not the musicians on their Studio Albums but only play for their Live Shows.
The concept of the Kami Band had been to bring in some of Japan's Best session musicians (within the Amuse, Inc. stable) on a rotating basis. I have since lost count but there have been well over 50 people that have played in the Kami Band. And throughout 2014-2017 the Kami Band was allowed to Shine in Live Performances and in Music Videos (there are several that feature the Band) and it felt like Babymetal and the Kami Band were a true Package Deal!...then 2018 hit...
Original Kami Band vs. Western Kami Band: The Kami Band did settle down into a select few players that most of the Fans knew...BOH on Bass, Mikio Fujioka Lead Guitar(RIP 2018 known as the Little Guitar God), Takayoshi Omura lead guitar, Leda Cygnus lead guitar, ISAO lead guitar, Hideki Aoyama Drums.
After the death of Mikio and Yui leaving the group, 2018 saw a change. Not only was Yui Not on the 2018 tour (unannounced until it happened) there was a complete Costume Change and the introduction of support Dancers. The whole dynamic had changed. in 2019 they introduced Masks for the Kami Band and then released that they had hired Western Players to support Babymetal on their US and European Tour in 2019...2018 and 2019 were tough years all around.
But then they kept the Mask for the Kami Band going forward, whether it was the original group of guys or the new guys and reduced the presence of the Kami Band and the Western Kami Band both in Live performances and in any officially released Music Videos.
Amuse, Inc. made it Clear that the Girls of Babymetal were the Show, not the Band. This also has not set well with the Fan Base but what can we do. They did go on to have a #1 Album in the USA on Billboards "Top Rock Album" chart in 2019 regardless of the Live Band setup.
Hope that helps some, and sorry if that diminishes your experience when watching Babymetal but please Please PLEASE don't give up on them because they have so So SO much Fantastic Music and Live Performances for you to check out and they are still making some great music now..as you saw with Mirror Mirror!!
Quick note on Babymetal's Choreographer since you asked - Mikiko Mizuno. If you go to the concert you can look at what you want.
Who plays guitars at an Alice Cooper show or the drummer at an Ozzy show?
I dont know, you might, but then again I know who plays at any Babymetal show.
Back in the 70s we had great Rock/metal shows on stages, today its just 3-4-5 guys in jeans and t-shirt playing what i can just listen to on their album, I prefer the way Babymetal does it.
The Japanese musicians from the original Kami-Band had tried many things and joining Babymetal as a backing band gave them more fame and love than they had ever had in their life, so they are happy to be able to do what they do.
Its even worse in other proffecions, like I love the CGI in Jurrasic park, but I dont know the name of the guy who did it.
You respect the band and the girls and i like that, if you like their formula more or less is all good with me, Babymetal was created to inspires young people and specially girls to have fun with the metal genre and i think they have had success with that if you see all the femal metal and fution metal coming out of japan since Babymetal started.

Well this is extremely subjective. When Ozzy played…how could people NOT know of Tony Iomi…or Randy Rhoads? They are absolute LEGENDS in the guitar world. So, yeah, there are lots of us who know who band members are. Especially BEING a band member myself, I value far more than just a face, or front man/woman. The music means much more to me than that. And yes, if I went to a show, I could look at who I want…but live shows don’t always happen. Or people can’t always go. I totally get the concept of of this. It’s not that I don’t understand it…it’s just that it’s new for me and may take a bit more to really get into this concept. I really need to change how I ingest music and shows…because this, to me, has been more distracting.

    • @musikbyjh
      @musikbyjh  Рік тому

And bringing up cgi in Jurassic park is a huge stretch. People haven’t been known to know every player behind the scenes of every effect in movies. But MANY many people are very familiar with band members. I see what you’re saying, but I don’t think that’s a very good analogy. I don’t need to know the name of the guitarist…but if it’s a live show I’m looking at, and the guitarist has a SOLO…which by nature is he/she standing out….I would hope that they’d actually get their moment. If you create a cgi Dino, does that mean you should be eaten by it on screen since it’s your creation? See how that analogy doesn’t really hold up? I get what you’re saying…I just think it doesn’t apply for this situation. Also, this is just about how you consume music. This is brand new for me…so it just takes a bit of getting used to. I have to change my thinking when it comes to Babymetal.
And then again…if you don’t like or care for the choreography…then what’s left? Nothing, really. Because the band is irrelevant.

nice reaction Jeremy-Metal, the Kami Band is like the soundtrack to the movie that is BABYMETAL, if you see them live in person, you can watch the band all you want, but I dare you to take your eyes off of the ladies telling you the story of the song through dance, they are a different breed of metal band. the producer, (Koba-Metal) is a devout metalhead and has many songwriter friends and musicians, who help him bring his vision to life, the ladies work very hard to bring the visuals of their show to life and as they have matured into adulthood, they have been given more responsibility in the direction of the music and storytelling,, and another thing about the Kami Band members, they are all free to make their own music outside of the BABYMETAL family and do, due largely from their association with BABYMETAL. for more Kami involvement, I suggest Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of the Metal Gods intro from Budokan, and for a look at our American Kami Band, "Kagerou" live with Kami intro, and you will see that you have to be extremely talented to even be in our Kami bands.

I think we all wish there was more highlight on the band, because they are some of the most talented ppl you'll ever see.
I think the intent of it is that what the girls are doing is supposed to connect the audience to the music, in a way. So it's not as much designed to de-emphasize the band as provide a new and different conduit to experience the band through, if that makes any sense. At least that's kinda how I think about it. But you're spot on at how incredible they are with their instrumentation. Some of the best anywhere.

I know, I know... I used to think just like you. Until I discovered them and became a fan. It was very unexpected for me and I understand that everyone needs some time to get the whole picture here. I see you already have been told about their working procedures and who is involved. So I just need to remark that BABYMETAL was formed basically because of Nakamoto's vocals and stage presence and Kobayashi's crazy idea that got out of hand, so to speak.
Business basics, lesson 1: differentiation. In a recent interview Su said that she feels like an unicorn because they front a metal band (or act or group or whatever) being women, singing in Japanese and having a dance aspect. This is precisely what makes them different. And, in this world, you want to be different from your competition in order to subsist.
In my experience (lifelong metalhead, old shool, blah, blah...), once you get used to it and start understanding why they do the choreo and why it's so important, you can't go back. Proof was evident when Yui had to leave in 2018 after not performing since October 2017. They tried everything and nothing worked until they eventually returned to the classic triangle formation. It was actually a big deal.
    Until next time!

In other songs the musicians have the atention they deserve, also have Intro solos, but o think they more often are in second plane because they are session musicians who are under a contract to perform and record with babymetal ( the girls) and you can note that because depending wich country, they have some diferent musicians. And, in the other hand, because they have top level musicians, the music is always awesome and played so well.

It works exactly as you've described, both session musicians and the girls are just performers, ( with few exceptions ) the music and lyrics are written by another semi anonymous hired guns. After talent agency Amuse closed their rock/metal branch in late 2000's due to lack of interest in the genre in Japan, they've put Key Kobayashi a metalhead who run it to work in their children talent division focused on jpop idol genre... and he created a jpop idol group that performs to metal music.
During the first two albums days, the band used to have few instrumental solo sections, when they were going to the front to show off and they also used to interact a bit with the crowd during the songs and only wore makeup instead of masks, so you could see their facial expressions and it were the same guys most of the time. During their regular tour and festival performances the band was just standing two meters behind the girls and it felt almost like a normal band with singer and two dancers, you could just watch musicians if you wanted. Then the production ruined the whole vibe and started to hide the band, there are different sets of session musicians for western and eastern markets now, they wear masks so people are not upsed about the band not being the original Japanese one they grew to love, they are also barely illuminated and don't interract with the crowd, just play and leave, most of the metalhead fans hate this, but what can you do.
Also squeezing a bit of proggy stuff is just a result of the producer love for it and a bone for a metalhead part of the audience, the focus is on more poppy and fun stuff, during the poppy stuff it all fits together much better.

    • @Hymnodic
      @Hymnodic Рік тому +1

Kagerou, which is off their third album, has a Kami band solo, and it was performed throughout the stint of their tours in 2019 and 2020. The production didn't "ruin the vibe". Things changed when the Kami band was offered to become the backing band for Babymetal throughout their Metal Galaxy tours, and those of the Kami band opted to not do it, for whatever reasons that are their own. So the producers hired the western Kami band, who, unlike the eastern Kami band, are not session musicians.
"Upset" would be an understatement of what they feared.
The only concerts the eastern Kami band will have played this entire year is the two in January and they weren't featured at all. The two PIA concerts in April in Japan were western Kami band, and the festival dates in Japan are also going to be western Kami band.

Great reaction! While I’m a huge Babymetal fan, I do agree that the musicians should get some spotlight. As other’s commented, Babymetal is truly a combination of the girls, Kami band, and the entire production team.
With that said, they definitely have not neglected the musicians, they have solo intros in Rondo of Nightmare, Awadama Fever, Yava, Catch Me If You Can, Kegarou and maybe a few more.
In addition, they do have various solo spotlights within other songs such as dueling guitars in Akatsuki (NOT the unfinished vers.) and in Amore (guitar duets + drum / bass duets).
I’m sure there are more instances I have not seen / not remembering.
Lead vocalist Su-Metal has 4 solos in first 2 albums and the other girls (Yuimetal and Moametal as “Black Babymetal”) has 4 songs where they get to shine without Su-Metal as well.
Bottom line, everyone member of the group from girls to the band has their moment in the spotlight, audience included. That perspective should allow a more enjoyable experience.

As you go forward in Babymetal you will see the absolute mastery the girls have of the stage AND crowd. The crowd control is the most impressive I have seen since I got into metal around 1980. Pits, Walls of Death, crowd chants and movements all lead by especially the 2 side vocals and dance. Yui and Moa and now Moa and Momo. Please watch Ijime Dame Zettai from Sonisphere 2014. 1st big gig in the West. Huge festival in the UK, known for how hard they were on “posers” and gimmicks. Many openly said they were pissed this novelty act was to perform. The girls were 16,15 &15 and were afraid no one would watch them play. That performance in front of that crowd is what broke Babymetal in the metal world. Not Gimmie Chocolate, which was a viral look at these crazy Japanese views. Su-metal said that performance was the most important they ever did. Quit thinking of what “should” happen and just experience what “does” happen. The singer has been on stage since age 5 and she is 25 now so and already has 20 years of stage experience.

I dont know if Babymetal works with a mediocre backing band but these Woman are in the same class as the Kami band. It is almost impossible to dance to that music yet they do it flawless;y while singing. I look at this somg as a way to show off just how talented the Kami band is. They are insanely talented but actually the vocalist is as good as the kami band. Without Su singing I dont see the Kami band worling with anyone. They could tour on their own but they wouldnt be selling out the 55000 person venue 2 nights in a row without su so everybody contributes to the band.

The whole "what is Babymetal?" question is a hump that a lot of people have to get over the appreciate them and what they do. I think that you have to completely discard conventional notions of what a 'band' is and look at Babymetal as something more akin to a theatrical production, because like a theatrical production, it has performers, writers, choreographers, set designers, lighting technicians, etc. that all work together to create the performances you see. The three girls up front are the linchpin of the whole show however, because it is their charisma and stage presence that draws the audience's attention and keeps it.
Babymetal is the creation of their producer/manager Kobametal (Key Kobayashi) and he has always been very clear that Babymetal is the girls and ONLY the girls, that is why they are the ones who feature in all the videos and media around the group. Everyone else has been recruited to assist and facilitate the shows that the girls star in.
The Kami band are undoubtedly incredible musicians, which is why Koba chose them, but they are all experienced session musicians who are used to performing as backing for other artists. Whenever the topic has come up, the Kami always express gratitude to Babymetal for allowing them to go places and perform at venues they would never have otherwise had the opportunity to play.

They're one of my favourite groups, but I found myself partly agreeing with you. It's expected that the girls get most of the screentime because they're the difference makers here (which is where we probably disagree), but the extent to which that is the case is something I don't like. The band have gotten less and less screentime as the years go by with stage setups hiding them more and more. The masks these days also don't help. They have their reasons probably, but I don't like it. Seeing the Kamis have fun alongside the girls played a big role when I was discovering the group.
A positive is that most people here do know the band members and appreciate them. They aren't as hidden in our minds when we listen as they are in their live videos :)

The choreography is a very important part of babymetal, it may not be an aspect that attracts your attention but it is a fundamental part. All the choreographies are complex and are different for each song so a lot of talent is also shown in them.I t is true that coreography is not something that most metalheads care about, but babymetal is not a band only for metalheads.
Saying this, the choreography NEEDS to be seen to be appreciated, however you can appreciate instrumentals without SEEING the musicians playing.

Lyrically, it's about social pressures on women and how they have to be actresses, set aside their own needs and play the part, so to speak. The vocals are definitely young, but the mesh between them and the band is spectacular, especially considering their age at the time.

I get what you mean and you're not in trouble lol don't be afraid to comment that because it's a honest question. So just sharing my perspective about your question I think it's important to recognize that BM didn't had a band in the beggining, they played to tracks and a false band, they are about everything all the manufactured the songwriters, producers, etc Su‐Metal recently also got her first time doing lyrics for one of their songs in the newest album. While I think you're perspective is not wrong considering about what Metal and musicianship is for you I honestly think you are making a mistake to say that the music is secondary and the performance comes first, it's actually a balance of both there are songs that they even do not dance that much and the performance is just a way to express the music. BM was formed around Su‐Metal (Lead vocal) and after that Yui & Moa as "Scream & Dance". In Tales of The Destinies it all comes down to the recording and live set because there is footage where the band is showcased and their awesome guitarists, but to the guitarist to always be the star of band.. Idk about that tbh I think in very different way. Well at the end the "focus" of BM is the girls not because they are a "poster boy/girl" it's that they are the soul of the band so don't twist it the musicians aren't more important even so because they came after and the creation of everything was about the girls without Su, Yui & Moa BM wouldn't exist and man I don't want to imagine a world without BABYMETAL lol...

About the band. good question. yeah, its all kind of a fusion. Sadly lately the band is being pushed to the back more. I am of the opinion that the band is equally as important as the girls. Their 2nd album was their peak (so far) with a perfect mix between a good focus on the girls, but also gave a great showing of the musicians. Ultimately its the Suzuka show (lead singer). order of priority is Sumetal, then her backing vocal dancers (Moa and..3rd), and then the band...but since 2017/18, some shit went down and honestly I think they have purposefully put less highlight on the band since then over time for reasons (which make sense from a corporate perspective...they wanted a set band but the band we got to know decided not to become full time...which made it weird).
But okay...long rant..overall its the girls first...the dancing and stuff is what sets it apart from just going to see slipnot or dragonforce...is it necessary? I don't think so...but then again, a huge show spectacle isn't necessary since the music is good...but it does add to it.
Final thoughts. They don't do a ton of prog metal. This was more the "we can do it so stop calling our talent simplistic" middle finger to the elitists who hate power metal. Usually the dancing fits with more traditional metal and rock.
Check out Rondo of Nightmare (with the mischief of the metal gods intro) for some band highlighting...or Yava

For your question, excuse me for assuming here, correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like you understated the dancing a bit, I'm pretty sure you understand that these dancing are not easy, but I feel like for a lot of ppl they're actually see it as "just a performance", the meat is the music, especially for a musician like yourself that understandably want to focus more on the music. With Babymetal I say everything you see and hear is Babymetal, it's just a matter of how you want look at it. Yes, the music are amazing, the Kami Band actually pretty well known and respected by the whole fans, but the 3 ladies deserves equal attention, so I don't think one is distracting the others, at least it shouldn't be.
But I get why a lot of ppl, even among the fans (including me sometimes) want them to show more of the Kami Band, but I assume that's what they're (including the Kami Band themselves) agreed and decided to do: to just focus more on the ladies, because they're THE Babymetal.
I always think about it this way: It's just like a movie, it's composed of so many ppl with their own job working together to create that movie, so nobody is overshadowing anybody, the actors are nothing without the script and direction by the team, but the directors etc. are nothing without the excellent acting of the actors/actresses. So with Babymetal, even though the ladies are not the one creating the music, I don't think that means that they're "overshadowing" the musician, and vice versa.

If you still dont get the cute side of BM, dont go for Sis Anger yet, go for Death first, then Sis Anger.
For now, I still recommend you go for Rondo Of Nightmare while youre in the path of Progressive now.

    How do I explain this?
Babymetal is NOT a band. It is a performance group. A Heavy Metal performance group. Their "orchestra" is the Kami band. The songs are not written by the girls or the band (with a couple of exceptions, Devine Attack and 4 No Uta). They are mostly written by the producer, Key Kobayashi aka Kobametal, and a team of ghost writers with cryptic "metal" names. A couple of songs are given writing credits to "Kitsune of Metal God". Like what the Fuck does that even mean?!😂 Who the hell is that?
So yeah... You can't look at Babymetal as a band per sé. It's a performance group with a production team, and the girls are the main stage performers.

Yui and Moa do have mics and they are singing their parts. Watch a non-logo video and you'll see. The band is secondary like it or not. Kamiband wouldn't be a band together without the girls. They are Babymetal. Band members number about 10 and are in two sections (East and West) depending on where BM plays.
You would not even know about this band without "the girls" because they all have their own deals, are studio musicians, and are Only with Babymetal when there are Live shows. They are not playing on the actual MVs.
BM gained popularity before they used the Live band. . Others likely to post have much more info about this I would think

I see Babymetal as the exception to the rule. Normally I'd be there with you watching the musicians play, but knowing that they're hired guns, that the Kami Band wasn't always a thing and has had many members, knowing those things tempers them not being featured as much as the girls. They're obviously great musicians and all that, but the name on the ticket says Babymetal and they're not strictly Babymetal.

Originally the Reactors resource videos had one with watermark and one without, they were meant to be watched by the reactor without the watermark, and the other posted with the watermark for the sake of copywrite. I have watched both versions multiple times and I can tell you it makes a gigantic difference.
I kinda hate to see reactors watching the watermarked versions and missing everything visual that makes the performances art.
They showed the guitarists shreading the leads and you couldn't really see them for the damn watermarks.
Either way the girls make this band, the band doesn't make the girls.

You've just opened pandora's box of many many many arguments within the fanbase already happening for years with your take on the session musicians and their "useage" so to speak during live shows.
Unfortunately, and that's a minus point for me, ever since Mikio unfortunately passed away (the guitarist that was pretty much shredding in the back of that video), and since Yuimetal left the band, they have shifted their focus back more onto the girls and have pushed the live musicians at the back.
What many people consider to be "Peak BABYMETAL era" of 2014-2016 was when BABYMETAL weren't afraid to push their live musicians front and center for parts of their shows. The "Kamis" as they are called, absolutely have been given a lot of opportunities to show what they can do and have used to play what we call "Kami intro" to many different BABYMETAL songs but alas, since 2018 it kind of got pushed back.
It's a criticism I myself have for BABYMETAL and one of the reasons I believe their peak was when they were giving the Kamis their time to shine. I still love BABYMETAL through and through, but this is a criticism I have and something that bugs me because I always say it's a step in the wrong direction. Sure, BABYMETAL is the girls. The musicians rotate in and out of tours and aren't really part of "BABYMETAL" beyond their live shows, but people have grown attached to these guys and many view them as part of the BABYMETAL family/band.
One of the criticism I give for that is that people like you will inevitably feel a bit awkward when seeing this. And I understand. To people like you I always say you just have to accept that BABYMETAL is in between chairs with this issue. The girls ARE the stars, and yes, the fans LOVE the Kamis and most of the fans would love to see them get more opportunities to shine. It's a tough situation but it's understandable as well.
It is to be said though that during the show you've just watched (Tokyo Dome 2016 which is during so-called "peak BM era") the musicians DO get time to shine and run up and down the stage shredding whilst the girls are backstage preparing for their next bit. If you ever get to watch this amazing show, you'll probably feel better about how the musicians are (or were) being treated.
Also worth mentioning, but let's not forget that the musicians themselves are all thankful for BABYMETAL. They have grown incredibly popular on social media and it has opened up great career opportunities and sponsorship deals since playing with BABYMETAL. Yes, BABYMETAL grew a LOT thanks to the live musicians, and so did they thanks to the girls. They mutually love and respect each other and are thankful for one another. We should also mention that without the girls, those musicians would've never played alongside some legends at epic stages or traveled the world to play big arenas like Wembley Stadium or festivals like Download on the mainstage.
Sorry for the wall of text but as I said, your criticism on this particular topic is something the fanbase knows very, very well.
PS: One last thing I should add is I totally agree that the focus during these bits from the montage guys should've been made more onto the musicians. But I mean, even within the fanbase, we have ratings and sorters about which live show has the best montage. We're that obsessed :D.
