Don't worry, this is the only time they performed it live.
Well, this is progressive metal. One of its features is the constant time signature changes. If metal in general is difficult to choreograph, this is almost impossible. You need to watch it from the spectacle perspective because this is highly unusual... and I'd say that it's unique.

🙃I did wonder (and I sort of guessed) what you would make of 'Tales of the Destinies' ... I'm getting the impression you are not a fan of Prog Metal with the countless time signature changes, melody lines and so on🤔😉 - it must make it almost impossible to count the beats or work out what the rhythm is when they are constantly changing - nightmare for a choreographer.😱😖
Maybe that is why Dream Theater don't have choreographed dancing, only BABYMETAL can do that.
This was the only ever live performance of this song. It does pay homage to Dream Theater (possibly to their song 'Dance of Eternity') as Koba is a big fan. I don't know them well at all, but I listened to a load of Prog Rock in the 70s, so this song wasn't completely alien to me, but it still took me a couple of listens to really catch what was happening - and it is actually so well done.
The drums, guitars, vocals, everything really are working together. How the Kami Band pulled this off live is incredible ... and how Mikiko managed to choreograph it is amazing.
Then we have Su, Yui and Moa ... the effort they must have made to give this almost flawless one-off performance, dancing to an "un-dance-able" song, on such a huge stage at the Tokyo Dome and as part of the grand finale (the piano at the end is the bridge into 'The One' which ended the concert) in the first night of their biggest and most important concerts to that point is unthinkable.

This is progressive metal. Multiple time signatures are a staple. The honky-tonk piano break is right out of Dream Theater. If metal is hard to dance to, prog metal is nigh on impossible.

After listening to this complex song a few times, you may grow to like it. This song alone is great, but if you listen to it through to the next song, The One, you will get a grander and more dramatic sense of the song.

First of all, personal preference is true. Everyone can have their own taste.
And I am thinking this song has more of the "music geeks" loving it. Saw some musicians got very interested in the structure of the song. It's really fun to see different people from different backgrounds picking up and appreciating different parts of the performance. That's why the Choreographer Reacts is fun to watch.

A few months ago I had a sort of disagreement with a Babymetal reactor - he was a drummer and really into technique and technical aspects of song making and performances . He loves TOTD and gets the whole Babymetal appeal (my guess is he was not really a big fan though not a hater either). Anyhow, in his reaction to TOTD, he commented that the ladies performing choreographed dance was not necessary to make TOTD great. And yeah I agree in a way. But not really. Because like you said, it comes down to preference. What made TOTD such a compelling song for me was precisely because the Babymetal ladies were ABLE TO sing and simultaneously dance with choreography to it (!!!). I mean even technically gifted musicians, are challenged to switch their minds and ears to the time signature changes.. and here, these teenagers are slaying the choreography and still appear adorable doing so. Like how much more metal can it get.. it just really ticked me off when he said, "it is easy to bang my head to the rhythm because my ear is trained to it" (or something to this effect.. And I go, well do you think I and tens of thousands of people will pay shitloads to see you headbang?
Ultimately what we like and love in music, dance and any form of art is a subjective preference. And for me, the choreographed dance that the Babymetal ladies performed here is what made me love TOTD. Put another way, I need to be paid to watch Dream Theater play this banger, And yet, I would shell out the king"s ransom for a guaranteed watch of Babymetal performing TOTD live.
      And Dusk til Dawn 😊

This is my favourite BM song! It's on my "Desert Island Discs" list. I bought the Tokyo Dome DVD just for this and the bridge into "The One". The rest of the concert is awesome, but this is the only live performance of "Tales of The Destinies" and it's the height of Kobametal's art/artifice/showing off/seeing what he can get away with etc. It's very obviously prog rock and a homage to Dream Theater, "The Dance of Eternity", even the two titles echo one another. This could have been a complete disaster, but Babymetal bring their unique singing and dancing talents to the song and the Kami Band are fantastic...as they always are. To so obviously reference another awesome piece of music and yet still be different and brilliant in its own right takes a lot of skill...and either guts or hubris. I love the way the ending resolves from the prog metal madness into a beautifully lyrical piano solo. The choreography must have been a challenge because of the changing time signatures, but if you listen to it a few times you pick up on rhythms and phrases that you can grab onto and the whole piece morphs from chaos into something that's beautifully structured. The main theme that is also in The One helps to anchor the ear. Also you have to love the piano break and the Charlies Angels ending.
It's interesting to note that Dream Theater played at the same 2014 UK Sonisphere festival where Babymetal had their breakout international success and I wonder if Koba managed to see them perform.

I had never heard progressive metal before Tales of the Destinies and it took a few listens before my brain could work out what my ears were hearing. It's definitely an acquired taste and not for everyone, not to mention a tough challenge to dance to. 😄 The more you listen to it, the less it will sound like noise.

  • @Hadesillo
    @Hadesillo 11 місяців тому +21

Progressive metal, like progressive rock, is known for being like that. Constant key changes, changing the beats, the rhythm going crazy...hmmm, i don't like it either, but there are some people around there that consider this the highest standards of musicianship (the prog rock fans themselves, they don't need a grandma).
Tales of the Destinies is Koba saying, yeah, we can do this too look.
You won't find other versions because it was only performed once, there at the Tokyo Dome. Su mentioned that her IEM died at this song and she had to dance by the drum beat, so imagine how hard it must be.
The song The One was born from a section of this song, and later it was turned into a full one. That's why some people consider them a duology and they were played side to side in this show- The piano you hear at the end. That transition is really beautiful, The One at Tokyo Dome is one of the most beautiful things Babymetal did.

    • @autohmae
      @autohmae 11 місяців тому +3

It's (one of the) highest standard of musicianship because it's an extra skill to learn to deal with the fast tempo changes and usually the guitar playing, etc. is already at a high standard in such songs.

Tales of the Destinies is Babymetal's tribute to the prog metal masters Dream Theater, and particularly to their song "The Dance of Eternity". Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater was shown Tales by his son, and he gave it the prog metal seal of approval, which I'm sure would have pleased Koba, since he worked on it for years to get it right.
Personally, I regard this song and this performance as Babymetal greatest achievement; the sheer complexity of this song, and the fact that they managed to perform it live is nothing short of a miracle. This performance was a complete one off that they have never performed again, though I still hold out hope that one day they will try it again.
Among fans it gets very mixed reactions depending on whether the listener is into prog or not. If you're not au fait with prog metal and with Dream Theater it probably seems confusing, but if you get it, it's a masterpiece. What is happening is that the time signature is frequently changing, so it sounds like its jumping around, but there is a coherence to it.

    Hmmm. Fair enough.
But I must say I thought that you might be complimentary about them working so very hard to fit a choreographed routine into what is clearly pure progressive rock (a la Dream Theater) which in itself has to be a monumental task considering how progressive rock is all over the place.😆

Thanks for this reaction. Not a complete surprise this is how you felt, I'm a prog. rock fan, but I don't listen to prog. metal so I also needed time to get used to it. Kind of how Babymetal flipped the table, so does prog. rock and especially prog. metal. Even the most technical players often need more time to listen to understand such songs ! Eventhough they enjoy the complexities of such songs.
So it's definitely a song/genre which needs time to get used to, a highly technical song as well and exactly why lots of fans thought: they will never perform this live.
It was a big surprise when they did ! But they never did again. One of the most important Kami band members who played guitar on this live performance is Mikio and has passed away, that might be part of the reason. In an interview the ladies have said they wouldn't mind performing it again. They just don't remember the choreography at the moment, because there were multiple versions when the choreography was still in development... I'm certain they can pick it up pretty easily, but Momometal will need more time than other Babymetal songs to learn it for sure ! Fun little fact, Tokyo Dome is Babymetal's biggest show, but they were most nervous for performing this song which they had never done before. SWell u-metal said in an interview at the start of the live performance her in-ear-monitor did not have any sound ! It came back later, but you can't see anything in her face about this. Such a huge professional little lady.
To maybe feel better about your reaction, watch some reactions by others, like: DimitarK or BeardoWeirdo or Prog dog. These are technical people who are much more used to it, but they clearly need time to process what happened as well.

Loved the honest reaction, thanks! This is my favourite BM song and I rate this as one of the greatest songs ever written, up there with Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway to Heaven personally.
What makes it so great? Disclaimer - I am not an expert and this is only my opinion.
I will try to highlight one or two things. Babymetal is known for their fusing of factors that are in juxtaposition with each other - cute and scary; metal and pop; angelic high pitched vocals and demon growls etc. In this song they take it another step further by having staccato (short, stabby, truncated sounds) and legato (longer flowing sounds) sections of the song in juxtaposition with each other.
The first twenty seconds have constant time signature changes in a harmonic minor which is not often heard in Western music which makes it immediately sound foreign and not like any 'music' we know. - more like just noise. This section runs at 200BPM. The reason for this is to build tension in the same way a snare roll does in dance music. The pay off is the legato section which follows, where the time signature falls into a very comfortable 4/4 and the tempo falls down to 150BPM. This lasts for around 20 seconds again followed by the staccato section and the tempo jumping back to 200BPM to start building tension again. This repeats throughout the song with the building of tension and then the tempo drop with the 4/4 legato pay off.
I do believe you are 100% correct about the honky-tonk piano section. I see it as a bit of comic relief to give one a break from a very intense taxing, complicated song. I feel the Monty Python reference was spot on.
The fact that they played this song live with all those constant time signature, tempo and key changes is a testament to the skill of the Kami band and well done to actually choreograph and dance to this monstrosity and all that at 200BPM for half of the time. There are even places where time signatures overlap. The song is a technical masterpiece, but it took me many listens to realise that and really appreciate the song.
I love your reactions and am so happy you did this one, even if you did not like it that much.

This kind of progressive music is intentionally challenging, intentionally non-intuitive and difficult to wrap your head around. For people who enjoy it (I do) a lot of the pleasure comes from listening and re-listening until you can meet it on its own terms, when you thoroughly feel it, you anticipate and enjoy all the changes packed into such a short piece. TotD on first listen to me was just a continual WTF :) Now it's among my top 5 Babymetal songs, and part of that is the fact that this complicated thing didn't just exist in the studio, they played it live, and they _DANCED TO IT_ - Mikiko choreographed it and they performed it for their biggest ever concert - which is absolutely _ridiculous._

That's fine, progressive stuff is not for everyone however talking from personal experience I was also confused by this song in the first time I heard because it's really that complex but it grew on me to the point I absolutely love this song as one of my favorites from BABYMETAL lol The shock is just too big and I even thought maybe this is too complex for BABYMETAL sound signature but then I realized I was absurdly wrong and that even tho Koba did this song it makes perfect sense with BABYMETAL, after listening to The One and revisiting this song I was able to understand the whole idea much better. So I think you may just be confused.
I also was already familiarized a bit with progressive music because before even knowing about the existence of BABYMETAL I was listening to one of my favorite band alongside BABYMETAL called GALNERYUS and their stuff is what I would call advanced music lol it's just that complex so I would say BABYMETAL made me fall in love with progressive music and as I had background about this stuff before it made me appreciate this style of composing even more, so much that my favorite music styles are Classical, Neoclassical, Progressive, Symphonic... It's ok, not all Babymetal songs are meant to be liked or loved Elevator Girl for ex. is my idea of torture 😂
BUT. gadaaaang, TOTD is what I use to shred purists and gatekeepers bashing the Babymetal ladies as not metal. Just try dancing to TOTD 😂😂😂
And you nailed it - this is the choreographed dance version of a Monty Python classic. And it is exactly why I love it. TOTD is in my top 10 of best ever live performances of Babymetal.

That's absolutely ok! The first time I have a similar thoughts. It's a bit more complex than what you can expect from BABYMETAL, but yeah, it's absolutely amazing song, but it's definitely not for everybody, and if you don't like it doesn't mean that is something wrong with you, it's just a matter of taste. Like, a complex jazz song or a complex cocktail, where you should deep dive first until you can really get it.

When I saw the thumbnail, I was like...oh, this one is going to be interesting. :p I respect the talent involved. I do not like this song. I'm not a prog fan. Time signature changes are a hallmark of prog, and really difficult, but not pleasing to my ear. It's super impressive from a technical standpoint, and prog fans looove this song. As an example of the genre, it's great, but the only reason I can tolerate this song is because it's BabyMetal, and I'm kind of in awe of the Kami Band's ability to play this live and the girls' ability to dance to it. Also, Su hits some *notes*. I never, ever, ever play this just because I want to hear it, tho. I will, however, watch people react to it. XD Congrats on getting through it. No shade to the prog fans here. I just...I get it. It's not my thing, either.

    Tales Of The Destinies:-
A tribute to Legendary progressive rock band "Dream Theatre" from America 🇺🇸. Babymetal only performed this song once which is at the Tokyo Dome in Japan 🇯🇵 to a crowd of 55000 fans over two nights which total of 110000 fans. This song genre is Progressive Metal and different from "Dream Theatre" which focuses more on Rock. That night Su-Metal ear-in monitor malfunction just as the song is about to kick in, Su-Metal has to relied on The Kami Band tempo changes to be able to synchronise with The Kami Band and both Yuimetal & Moametal. Considered Babymetal most technical song and complex composition. As seasoned pros, Babymetal did a superb job that night. Those who love progressive music will definitely appreciate the technical aspects and precision of the Kami Band and Babymetal complicated choreography. The piano melody bridge will lead to the last song The One from their Metal Resistance Album. Progressive Metal at its best. Only done once live at the Tokyo Dome.

This an art song, this song isnt supposed be anything other than what it is. Its a technical challenge thats almost impossible to pull off. The fact that they performed it flawlessly is a tribute to their amazing abilities. That the girls could dance to this is why I put them up their with the kami band interms of sheer genius and talent. The amount of work that this song required astounds me. There are something like 28 time changes in 😮the song. You wont it find many musicians who arent gob smacked that anyone could playthis.

It's fine that you don't like ToTD. Progressive metal is just weird with a lot of time signature changes, and it is definitely strange to even try dancing to it. I don't listen to prog metal a whole lot because I find it annoying most of the time, but I did grow to like this song a lot after a few listens, and it is one of my favorite BM songs now because it is so different for them. And you were right, this song was something Koba wanted to do because he is a fan of the progressive metal band, Dream Theater.

I would say progressive metal isn't for sitting down and analyzing structure... you have to more just appreciate the ride, which will be unpredictable and full of surprises. But it's definitely not for everyone. I guess that would make it hard to comment on the choreo if you're unfamiliar with the more freeform structure. Spoilers though, the girls absolutely killed it. I had heard a rumor that Su's in-ears failed during the performance, but she continued on from memory. Not sure if it's true, but I think they have the talent to believe it.

I think your discomfort comes from your dance background. this song alone has 28 time signature changes. a constant change between rhythm and changes in speed. no consistent same/similar rhythm. this progressive metal song is by nature an absolute enemy of choreography and dance as you know it. and since you're looking at this video exclusively from a dance standpoint, it's...well...inevitable that you can't do anything with this song. well, maybe in a quiet moment, all to yourself, you can put your dance background back in your handbag. watch this video again but this time, as Su-Metal once said "Don't think, feel!"😜😘

I'm with you pretty much. I found I don't like progressive metal. Some parts are very beautiful when Su is singing. She sounds amazing. The rest is just noise to me too. Every time I 'm like ok I am feeling the beat, it changes. I don't hate it but I don't have it on my playlist and the only time I will listen to it is when I watch it on Blu Ray and SEE the girls perform. The little dance piano part is adorable though.
So many fans orgasm over this song and I just will never get why (as you see in the comments already). Yes it's crazy hard and technical. I could care less about that if it isn't enjoyable. 🤘🦊🤘

I was expecting you too talk at length about how the girls were able to dance through all these time signature changes so I was a bit disappointed that you said next to nothing about the dancing. I didn't expect the music would confuse you that much. :) It just threw you off too much. Of course its ok to not like it anyway. I like ToD for its craziness but I wouldn't want an entire album like that.

    • @xiaouiris

It was hard to follow as a street choreographer, perhaps a choreographer or dancer who can pin point the appropriate changes in tempo as a fan of prog metal could give a better analysis 🧐

  • @Meatrose
    @Meatrose 10 місяців тому

Don't sweat it. There are good reasons why metal music generally doesn't feature choreographed dancing and *progressive* metal is even less suited for it, often exponentially so. I'm not knocking progressive rock/metal as a genre. Heck, I almost exclusively listen to prog since nothing else is able to scratch my itch musically. All I'm saying is that it's perfectly understandable and fine to not enjoy this one very much, especially from a choreographer's point of view.
As a fun fact; the band being openly paid tribute to in this song is Dream Theater and the song of theirs that gets the most noticeable nod is their "The Dance of Eternity" which is a 6 minute song with 128 time signature changes. Their music is not choreography-friendly, to say the least. ;)

Haha, prog metal is like a choreographer’s hell. Because, what’s a rhythm? Lol

This is not my favorite BM song either. I am a fan of prog rock and when Mike Portnoy's son -original drummer for Dream Theater-brought this song to his attention he was impressed. I feel like the song itself makes it almost impossible for the girls to do their thing (though god bless them they gave this their all). Prog is definitely an acquired taste. What's amazing to me is that the ladies were able to dance to this at all. As I'm sure others have noted "prog was never meant to be danced to, but listened to".

I think you should learn a little more about progressive metal, to understand so many changes in times, pauses, styles and how difficult it is not only for musicians to play it, but to choreograph with this musical genre. Well, you look totally lost with this song, the genre they perform. Honestly, you are very beginner for something as deep as this, and I say it without any bad intention, all my life I have listened to rock and metal, and I fell into subgenres until I reached this one, that's why I make the comment.

I know this likely won't be read, but just wanted to say, Tales of the Destinies is definitely in my top 5 for Babymetal. I have no real musical background, but the reason I love this song is solely the pure chaos of it. The fact the rhythm and speeds change so frequently, yet everyone is together (in the band). Throw on top of that, the fact that the girls are able to do anything resembling choreography along with it, makes me obsessed with people reacting this performance (the only performance).
Also, I think I saw a comment that Su's in-ear was malfunctioning for the first bit of the performance - not sure if confirmed, but still crazy.
