  • Alyn and Stephen return to the Dartry Mountains to walk Benbulbin. With stunning views over Sligo and Donegal, Benbulbin is also a great spot to view Benwhisken and Truskmore, two of the other mountains in this great little mountain range.

Iconic Benbulben, a beautiful spot. I've only been up twice, once with a group of friends when we traversed the plateau and once at midnight on the summer solstice as part of a Sligo Mountain Rescue fundraising event. I must get back there again some time.
Benbulben seems to have suffered with the heavy rain of the last year. Our Club cancelled a recent walk as groups have been asked by Mountaineering Ireland to avoid it due to erosion concerns and looking at the start of the video I can see why now. It will soon resemble the horrible approach that Errigal used to have unless something is done to alleviate it. The condition at the trig (while giving you a brilliant sequence) is a disgrace really. It wouldn't be that difficult to get some stone up there to make it better for visitors.
Sounds like a real moan fest after such a great video! Thanks for bringing us along, you've given me a nice urge to revisit 😊

Totally true Niall. The tracks on the way up the river are very "Errigal-esque" very muddy and with more rain they will get so much worse. You could see folk trying to find new ways which will only make the issue worse. Reminds me of Arderin too. And there were so many people there. At least another dozen as well as us.
But such a stunning place. Iconic

Alyn, nearly as wet💧💧as the Antrim Hills😊 Nice leap to the trig pillar👍 Cool views of those steep slopes of Benbulbin and over to an active looking coastline👍 Prosecco at the summit😊

Definitely "damp" Gerry. But what a fantastic place. Loved every minute of this one and Proseco at the top! I mean who really is still making coffee on a stove anymore. Im setting a new trend. Ha ha ha. A beautiful walk

Plenty of wet ground to contend with on your way up Alyn 😮 Such an iconic looking mountain from the road - I haven’t been up it yet to see those views from up top. You both looked like you had a great day out..fresh air, fab visibility and fun company! Hope the food was enjoyable too 😎

Oh my word Miriam it was a great day out. The mountain is amazing! Iconic is the word. It def does not disappoint. But it has left me wanting more. I want to go back and walk Benwhisken and Kings.
It was a fun day. We both couldn't take in all the views. It was so good. Def one to get on the list

That’s a really enjoyable looking hike Alyn, and a great overview. Definitely added to the list, now let’s hope for some dry weather 😂

It lives up to its reputation Eddie. It is so beautiful. A powerful day walking. But it was very muddy. The tracks and trails are very degraded. Niall Harran was just saying in the comments below how Mountaineering Ireland have requested groups not to walk it because of erosion concerns. I can see why. It could do with some help.
Its just a great day out and has set me planning for Benwhisken! Lol

@@walkwatchersoh right, that’s good to know, hopefully it will recover. Just shows it’s a popular one for good reason, looked fantastic. Thanks for that Alyn 👍🏻

Great video, Alyn, very inspiring, I'm going to do this soon. Funny enough I did Truskmore 2 days ago from Glencar, and discovered the bogs of this area are deep!! But we made it to both cairns. There's something very raw and natural about this area and the views are fantastic. I thought Benbulbin was Finn McCool's grave but maybe I've got the legends mixed up?!! Regards, Ashley

You know what Ashley, it really inspired me to go back again! I need to go out to Benwhisken. I agree it's such a beautiful area and the Darty's are a great range of mountains. There are so many interesting things to see and trails to walk.
Hadn't heard of the Finn McCool burial story before but who knows Dermot and Grainne cave is there and the boar hunt was there too so I'll need to look into it a bit more. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Cracker video Alyn, and love the whole myth and legend stuff. Must take the wife someday, sounds like we could maybe get a cheap trip to Paris down one of those holes! Stephen’s slowmo jump to the trig was epic 😮 Seriously, great views captured and was that actual glassware for the drinks!? ATB

Thanks pal. Its just such an amazing mountain. Beautiful from the start and the views all the way to the end are so good.
I think Ryanair are lookin into the whole holiday by fairy hole thing so better jump in quick before they get all commercial and stuff.
Stephen pulls it out of the bag everytime. Wee surprises. The proseco was complete surprise. What a gent! But no not exactly glass, they were "Ground" coffee mugs! Lol

Well done. Will put it on my list. Done Errigal Sunday in terrible weather and my jacket let me down. Can I ask what jacket you have and how you rate it.

Alan Errigal is another iconic Irish mountain. What a stunning place. You definitely need to visit Benbulben.
My jacket is the Revolution Race Cyclone and I cant praise it enough. It hasn't let me down yet and cuts the wind down completely. Stephen was also wearing a Revolution Race jacket.
