We had monthly meetings and she told me how wonderfully I was doing.
I was shocked with my first performance review and I addressed it with my supervisor. My review wasn’t just negative it was shockingly negative. I wanted to know what she meant and she told me it’s a standard letter. I am definitely gathering all my evidence to protect myself.
I just can’t fathom some Supervisors/Managers are setting the Unreal expectations!!
If you're doing your honest best and that's not good enough for your boss, pull the plug and leave.
What if it is your dream job ?
@yoch8350 if your boss is not making you a better person, or treats you horribly it is not a dream job
This was extremely helpful advice, thanks. Getting a bad performance review, especially when it's undeserved (e.g. due to new requirements going forward), feels like dying.
Thanks Cody - yes especially when it’s undeserved or used as a way to push someone out of an organization.
What if the review is BS? What if the review is based on how much they personally dislike you or how annoying they think you are, instead of what you actually did? What if they do want you to quit?
If that is INDEED true (confirmed after checking multiple legit sources and confirmed again), then it’s time to leave. You can also start building your case too and stay as long as you need to collect evidence and perhaps take some kind of legal action if you do have a case that is
Quit - get out of there are fast as possible
Exactly I am gonna nail her a$$
Plan the getaway and bail out. You leaving for a better job is the best way to ask them to shove it.
Or wait until your manager will change team. had like 4 manager coming and go
I think toxic workplace leads to bad performance reviews, usually in corporations the boss relies on others bs feedback and not on metrics. On 360 feedback review usually people just throw their frustrations in there and then the boss uses that against you to not give you a raise. It's that simple and works every time. Turn people against each other by asking the right questions and then uses that as a motive to not give you a bonus or a raise.
Yes I see your point. 360, and other similar assessment tools, in my opinion is a waste of time made by “experts” that repurpose the same content with a new trademarked name. If the manager is good, he/she will help raise their team and let them grow and give direct feedback.
What sucks is for some companies this sticks for entire career in industry.
Are you serious? If you give someone a true negative review there is no way they are going to improve to be a powerful force together. The relationship is strained and doomed. Its better to get a different job. But what you describe is negative feedback or a negative comment in the review. Negative comments are where you can show and improve .
Exactly! Your reputation is ruined and theres no way you can grow in that company anymore.
The most important thing is to recognize all the sweet talk in words and on paper and no negative comments from the manager but then giving you a rating lesser than optimal to meet the efin Bell curve. What might be the best way to deal with it ?
I've worked through COVID with a very high risk population since 2018. I've watched various employees around me slack off. Now I'm quiet quitting. F them I'm waiting for them to lay me off. I've dealt with many deaths and personal problems and all they care about is productivity. My productivity was great until they got rid of my high yield clients. Feel like they're pushing me out. Or make me a manager which I've turned down MANY TIMES for ethical and legal reasons. So the manager who did my review I trained and I also trained many people along the way too.
Gosh I’m sorry to hear that and hope you find your way out of it. I don’t know if quiet quitting is the answer…and funny enough if they are pushing you out…is that quiet firing?
Bad advice, a negative review a sure-fire way to get someone to leave.
I detest the word Boss
1) Don't argue.
2) Don't insult your boss.
3) Don't blame others.
4) Don't badmouth coworkers.
5) Thank them for the opportunity to improve.
6) Shake their hand.
By boss keeps canceling our check in meetings.
That’s not uncommon but doesn’t mean it’s acceptable, especially if the boss is high up the chain. I’d suggest you bring that up specifically with the boss and inquire as to why that’s the case and how that can be improved
What if the performance discussion comes in the middle of nowhere when you already applied for another position in the company and you are going to have an interview? Now your manager decides to do PR with you before the interview.
Good advice. Do you have a video on how to deal with a boss that wants you to take a different career path (to suit their career aspirations) vs what you want? A path that has nothing to do with your passions, strengths, skill set, and interests?
I would say, 1) are there transferable skills or experience that could help get you to where you REALLY want to go? 2) otherwise, time to look for other options…
What if they read what you wrote in remarks and tell you to change it,?
My supervisor isn't interested in checking in with the staff. She does not care to see if the partner's claims are true or false.
Hello I want to become a software engineer or developer what subject should I choose for year 11 and 12
Hope you respond
@101 mentor
What if they refuse to give you a copy of the review?
The problem is reviews are used as weapons by insecure people.
Yes it’s possible (although rare). I would say if the boss is insecure, you don’t want to be there.
Seriously my review was marked down by an inferior supervisor seriously can you write about that
Also when I asked for specifics, my boss got angry and stated she wasn't prepared for that question.
That’s no good…goes to show the quality of leadership unfortunately
Thank you, that helps me to decipher kind of what is going on. It has been pretty confusing to me, the last year. I never feel like I know what is expected of me and the goalpost seems to keep moving. I really appreciate your response.
What to do if you think the comment from your supervisor on the performance sheet is clearly false?
Ask them about it - ask them to explain that in more detail with examples
Yeh ambiguous as hell!!!!
Do I need to sign my performance review if I don’t agree with it?
Good question hope someone answers this cos I want the answer too
I have not signed reviews that were slanderous and fabricated. Alternative I have responded with an action plan for areas of improvement and evidence against false claims.
Why do these videos always seem to focus on the white collar jobs? There are plenty of jobs out there that do performance reviews for menial, blue collar work
That’s a great question! There should be more content on that I agree with
