I recently learnt that yt ads pay wayyy more in december and the least in january so if you all think of it financially its a verrrry good decision to upload videos in December and take off in January scotts real smart for that
Minor point of frustration: Going for Icy Wind while the Purugly is asleep would likely allow you to outspeed it by the time it wakes up. Additionally, I think there was a bit of an over-fixation on Swords Dance - being slow means you may not always have time to set up meaning relying on priority moves like Ice Shard and strong moves like Blizzard could provide better results. With all that said - Substitute probably covers all my criticisms. And it may be an even better idea to go fully all in on Attack with a minus Special Attack plus Speed nature, or something along those lines. EDIT: Despite my initial misgivings, that seemed like it went really well overall!
Platinum routing is deffffinitely substantially more complicated then other gens. Especially without multiple runs and good routing software. Im interested in blizzard too, but considering balanced stats, free priority and just how strong ice shard and coverage ends up with boosting, and the fact that the speed just ends up working out, i could see Scott being right!
@@tsawy6 Indeed! I think the only thing that still stands after the full video is the criticism of the Razor Leaf play versus Purugly over Icy Wind - but considering the particular attempt didn't even end in a loss I have no grounds to stand on. xD
Cheri Berry Natural Gift is a 60BP Fire move, basically every Pokemon can learn it and the TM is cheap from the Department Store. It's such an easy answer to Ceasar in almost every run.
It is, and scott knows this. However, its incredibly constraining on the moveset, and basically only good for 4x weaknesses like gyara and scizor. Platinum seems to demand more than just going to town with a pair of stab moves, substantially moreso than the first three gens. Teams are more balanced, there are threats that arent effectively hit by most combinations of two types at multiple point in the run. You could route through move reminders and such, but probably a bigger time loss then lucking through (tho maybe not bigger than going and levelling!)
It's well worth the ez KO on Caesar to move up since grass coverage just isn't that gd at that point of time, plus Scott can always revisit the move relearner to reteach any of the forgotten moves/ tutor for ice punch (with SD) for abomasnow. Granted he is still learning the game he may have missed some of this issues but hopefully future optimized runs will have a look at natural gift more.
Hey scott just a little advice for the Scizor in Byron's Gym, you can buy the natural gift TM in the Veilstone Dep Store and if you use it while holding a Cheri Berry you get a 60 Base power fire move to help you !
I feel like I'm going slightly crazy hearing Scott talking about "chancing Icy Wind's accuracy" or "seeing if Icy Wind's accuracy comes through" when it's 95%, same as Razor Leaf, or all the times he keeps using Ice Shard instead and missing ranges like against Fantina This is next level Icy Wind slander
In Pokemon terms, if a move’s accuracy isn’t 100% it may as well be 0% - Icy Wind is far from being as bad as something like Focus Blast or Stone Edge but in a speedrun that 5% chance to miss could potentially make a big difference
Honestly Abomasnow is so much better than ppl credit due his types. Being balanced P/S, you can really werk him either/or, or even mixed tbh. Esp with things like Aurora Veil/Light Clay/Snow warning. I've run him solo in Crystal, both Gen4(hail) and Gen9(snow with buffs to ice) learns sets and legit. Shockingly good Mon.
Idr which video you asked what folks were doing while watching - I try to crochet a lot of my Christmas gifts, and having 45 minutes of something familiar yet slightly different every night is such a boon. My gift recipients thank you!
A couple of notes - Bliizzard would have really helped in the double battles. I also feel your move choice at the start of the run could have been better, such as making more use of Icy Wind's speed drops to move first in longer battles
If a miss + Hit does about as much as two hits of a weaker move, you should just be running for the less accurate move anyway. Him using Powder Snow against those Budew is a painful example
I remember in my first full playthrough of Platinum I Potion stalled with Abomasnow vs Cynthia. Good times. Surprised at how many hits Abomasnow survived here.
Seeing this video made me wonder about the use of the damage reduction berries for Pokémon that need to survive a super effective hit in a battle. They can be picked up at Pastoria City but are randomized. Considering the way you approach the weekday trainers in Crystal I think it is worth considering manipulating the lady that gives the berry into getting one that could be useful for the run. Thanks again for the amazing run, I often ran Abomasnow in my gen 4 playthroughs so this brings up some great nostalgia. Keep up the good work!
These long form pokemon runs are helping me keep my sanity at work. Asides from the overtime lately, ive gotta work 18 out of the next 21 days for the christmas rush. Having these come during christmas is an awesome present for me 😂
I'm really excited to see the follow ups for Abomasnow way down the line. This run really highlighted to me how important moveset management and routing are going to be for optimizing Platinum runs. In general I think you may be under-utilizing the move reminders ability to sculpt your moveset for specific fights. Being able to freely delete and relearn any non TM move is really useful for letting more niche moves shine.
Mega Abomasnow has lower speed so its weather setting ability always goes second in a matchup against another weather setter, guaranteeing setting up Hail. When there are weather wars in the meta it pays to be the slower Pokemon,
Blessed with uniqueness, cursed with weaknesses; let us see how this festive behemoth does in the solo gauntlet. 0:26 - Sucks that Ice still hasn't been given a second resistance. Why not let it resist Dragon given it's already super effective to it or Water/Fairy, given both types are already pretty powerful? 1:21 - Decent STAB early moves, and it has a large TM movepool. Most of the TMs it can learn are admittedly more Grass and Ice moves but hey, physical and special moves aplenty. 4:29 - The frosty trees are now sprinting. Cranidos must be befuddled by this development in modern times. 6:12 - Tree2 is making up for the bad luck of the seemingly flame bodied Zubat with this survival right here. Good job! 9:12 - How strange that Gardenia's Cherrin lacks Sunny Day. You'd think she would see the weather, have her Turtwig set up Sunny Day, and swap out to Cherrim when here lead faints. I guess she could have swapped out to Roserade for that Poison typing. 12:24 - Rather amusing to see just how much use you are getting out of Grasswhistle. 14:18 - Hail sure is coming in handy. Whilst good old reliable Substitute does make a reappearance, otherwise it's been quite different with how Tree2's run is going. 16:46 - Poor Barry; just a second ago you had a tiny Snover. You pop back to the Pokémon centre and suddenly come back with an Earthquake producing Abomasnow. The power of sweets! 19:44 - Very fortunate indeed.I would critique the AI, but to be fair, it's not like the rest of it's moveset would do much to Abomasnow and Wake would rather not send out Quagsire against a Grass type. 22:06 - The horror in your voice as you say, "It doesn't." Ace Trainer Cesar and his Scizzor are demanding an artwork with their persistent challenge in these Platinum runs. 26:58 - The would have been cruel if Tree2's survival was offset by being paralysed. That high HP stat has allowed her to withstand quite a few attacks. Many survival moments in this run. 29:09 - A classic Scott's Thoughts moment. Also, really odd that Abomasnow doesn't learn Avalanche naturally. 32:07 - Luckily, the Gyarados had no good move to use against you. Well, I feel Giga Impact would have worked out better than Ice Fang for Cyrus but he went for the latter rather than the former. 33:55 - In watching this footage, I can understand why you didn't go with the set-up. It'd be a nightmare to get past than Yanmega if he set up all those Double Teams. 35:31 - Turns out you were overly worried about Infernapes. Scizzor proved a far bigger threat in the end. 38:08 - I was rooting for Abomasnow but even I did not expect it to do so well. Fantastic job to the quick Christmas tree with dancing swords!
Daily December gen 4 shiny hunt day 2! Did my encounters in bed while watching this Scott video on a 60 inch TV XD Began the video at 4950 and ended at 5146. Still no shiny yet, but we keep going!
A pseudo-legendary AND a legendary? That means Garchomp and… well, Dialga and Palkia might be better suited to a race, same with the Lake Trio, and the others are Mythicals (Manaphy, Phione, and Arceus). So… I’m gonna assume Regigigas? If so, THAT one is gonna hurt due to Slow Start.
After watching I’m shocked Ice Shard was so useful! I didn’t even consider it! I’m almost positive I went with Ice Beam, EQ, swords Dance and return. All in all I love the gen 4 series as it’s the game I know the most about! Great video Scott
Abomasnow is underrated. It has a lot of weaknesses, but it has some decent resistances and good STAB. People focus on the weaknesses, but I think it’s better typing than Sableye, that doesn’t have any weaknesses. Spoiler: Having it the same tier as Staraptor sounds about right.
I would love to see a one-off episode on Colosseum with Espeon and Umbreon at some point. Though I imagine doing so would be a huge technical hurdle with little payoff.
I think the massive number of rare candies is reduce the problems that growth rates cause in gen 4. Unlike gens 1, 2, or 3, it's a relatively low cost option to throw a couple of rare candies at a problem instead of having to level by hand.
2:52 Chimchar & Monferno both resist Ice and Grass type moves, so idk why that would be more complicated after evolution because Snover/Abomasnow’s STAB options remain the same
Maybe for a Christmas tree themed run, you could backport Mega Sceptile (given the shape of its tail) to an early generation. 32:20 BTW, I just noticed... are you using NO$GBA? 40:00 Then I'm not watching the next Platinum run.
I've done a solo run of Omega Ruby with Abomasnow and it was pretty bad. Speed is just horrendous, can confirm that the mega stone literally just makes it worse so I never made any real use out of it. It had 43 resets, and is sat at the top of the E tier. One place behind Yamask and one ahead of Treecko (my first and very unoptimised run). Glad it was a little better in Platinum though!
I know they maybe be bad in battle but Snover is together with Jigglypuff, Marill and LItwick my favorite. It's cute, especially in that only one anime episode it got
Man I hate it when you get a freeze only for it to be immediately broken and they still attack on that same turn,.. This is why I hope that in the next gen game they implement the Legends freeze rework Frostbite, which is the special equivalent of Burned

How does your artist Serena make these arts quickly
I dont think you even needed rockslide, you probably could have kept a grass type move for bertha
Your game time could also be inflated by the hail weather text popping up in every battle
Farming engagement by having the double line read at minute 36:50, smart
That's a male snover on the left. Females (like the one you use in your video) have a white line on their belly
