@@RetroBirdGaming speaking of both sides. There's something I want to tell you that's going to definitely catch your eye. I will agree with people that Nintendo did make bad decisions but we definitely need to move on from all the hate. I mean luckily very luckily they never listen to SJWS's or woke people unlike Disney or Sony. Also they don't buy other companies and milk them until they go out of business just like EA and Disney. They don't treat their developers like crap or crunch like Activision. People need to move on from all that Nintendo is not like those companies. I wrote a letter to Nintendo about people using Iwata's death as an excuse In a disgusting and disturbing way. Surprisingly they responded to me.
Here's what they told me and yes it's real.
      The Letter From Nintendo
      Dear Jake:
Thank you for taking the time to write to us here at Nintendo! Due to high volumes and preventive measures put in place by COVID-19, we haven't been able to respond to you in a timely manner. I apologize for the delay in our response!
In your letter, you spoke about people who had been mean to you online, and I'm sorry that they've given you such a difficult time. Here at Nintendo, our mission is to put smiles on the faces of everyone we touch. This can be tough, but it's something we care about doing! For example, perhaps we make a game loved by most of our fans, but some of them don't enjoy it at all. We want to hear both sides. Maybe the game can be improved, so more people can enjoy it! Or, maybe the game simply isn't for them, and we can make a different kind of game they'll enjoy.
When we hear all the positive things our amazing fans like you say, it encourages us to keep up the good work. When we hear the negative things people say, it pushes us to think of how to make them happy, too. We'll keep making great games that you can enjoy and be inspired by, don't worry! For the people who aren't yet having fun, just leave them to us. We've got a lot of smart and talented people on the case, figuring out how to let everyone have as much fun as you're having.
You also mentioned that you make Mario videos, and even included a picture you made of Mario along with your letter. It's flattering how Nintendo inspired your creativity - your work is fantastic! We're still working on our own Mario movie, and will announce more when we're ready.
Thanks again for writing, Jake! As a token of our appreciation for your letter, a few small items have been enclosed with this response. We are very excited about the future of Nintendo, and we're looking forward to sharing more great games with you!
      Sincerely,
      NINTENDO OF AMERICA INC.

    • @tardigrade9343

@@flyingmonkeys96 ... but on the other hand, they invent the concept of "classic mini consoles", develop their own emulators for it and the devs even leave hints inside the code showing they know full well that people will hack/mod them and use their full potential.
See, I think every big company's CEOs and shareholders are pretty detached from the actual craft and the product they're producing, while the heart and soul is with the people within that company. The fact that Nintendo had someone like Iwata, someone with heart and soul, calling the shots is actually a testament to how good we have (had) it with Nintendo compared to others.
You're NOT wrong about what you said. But I rather have a game company be protective of their content because they believe in it than someone like Jim Ryan from SONY who commented on retro gaming by saying "no one wants to play old games".

The only other aspect I’d mention is the impact of the draconian exclusive 3rd party licensing practices in the 80s and 90s. They really did a lot that stifled other platforms. They’ve managed to curate a great library of games back then, but as a consumer I can’t help but feel very mixed about the impact to overall competition.

I love Nintendo, was a big apart of my childhood. They're not perfect but then nobody is so. How I look at it. I like how they're the one company not scared of trying new things, when they fail. @@RetroBirdGaming Lol yeah who knows, i still remember when the first wii hit Sony and m$ both said "that's interesting how they're going a different direction but we'll stick to traditional controls" essentially, then the wii does extremely well and shortly afterwards Sony comes out with the move and a wii sports knock off and M$ with the kinect both like "hey we have motion controls too everyone!" I can't help but wonder had the wii failed horribly if they would have pushed the motion controls as well. 😁I mean those who are gen x or millennials know Sony specifically have been biting off Nintendo for years but thsts clearly evolved to other companies now too.
The new stem deck I think will be at that one pc demographic and not so much general, casual console gamers plus I'm hearing now it won't be able to play certain games as well, concerns about overheating issues. I mean the switch gets pretty damn warm on some games I can only imagine that deck burning after a while.
Note while I love Nintendo I have bought other consoles too like the first 2 Playstations and I have evey Xbox except the series s and x. Will get the Xbox series s later on. I typically enjoy my Switch and Xbox the most these days.

They fail cause they try new stuff, that's why people copy them. Virtual Boy and Wii U shows others what doesn't work. Even the Wii, while very succesful, it shows you cant just put motion controls in a game and call it a day. People still want "normal games".

    • @MKF30
      @MKF30 2 роки тому

@@domx7zero157 Everyone fails sometimes but Nin rarely does and thus why others copy to try to bank on the same success. I dont see your logic, that makes no sense if they fail then why would others copy them? To follow "failure"?
Lol No they copy them because they see what attracts gamers and newer players alike what actually works. Nintendo started the traditional gaming element anyway with a standard remote with buttons. Also yes remote contros.can work and have so i disagree.. Besides are you forgetting the fact that they offer alternate control options? And they also give us "normal" games so don't know what youre talking about there. They offer regular controls as well as motion, you need to stop reading kotaku unless you're a zoomer and simply not aware but they've offered alternate controls with the wii, wii u and switch. They're just the first to have motion controls as a main element in *some* games not all but they work and thats all that matters
You listed 2 consoles one not even a real practical console, the other was rushed. Sony has failed too at times with ps3 and currently the ps5 has had burning overheating issues. Xbox 360 had the red ring of death issues. Xbox doesn't sell well in Asia. Sony doesn't know what backwards compatibility means etc Like I said nothing is perfect but clearly Nintendo are the most original and not scared to try new things and let's be honest you pointed out 2 consoles out of 8. 6 which is most being very successful or doing well and every portable doing very well as well over the years. I mean you are aware when it comes to portables nobody is even close to them in that market, right?

Most of the time it feels like, even though I'm a costumer, I just have to deal with whatever the company wants and it's not the company that's is trying to make itself more accessible to me. A good example is Xbox, I was never a "die-hard Xbox fan" but now since we have so many ways to play Xbox games (Gamepass,Xbox Live Gold, cheaper games) I got a chance of trying games that I would never buy myself and I ended up loving them. The creators and developers at Nintendo needed to come into the video game market in the early/mid 80s with a hard-nosed attitude. Fresh off the video game crash of 1983, they didn't want to to risk repeating what doomed all the other previous consoles. To avoid failure, they adopted rigid rules and guidelines that often rubbed fans, retailers, and 3rd party game developers the wrong way. A lot of those original developers and creators are still major players at Nintendo today. I just think they came into the market in the 80's with that mindset, and have plowed forward with a similar mindset every since. Although many of their decisions have pissed me off, I still find it hard to hold a grudge against them. Their longevity and massive success has earned them my respect - even though they sometimes piss me off.

I think a few times the quality of their games in terms of game design can be a bit overstated, though to be fair that's pretty subjective.
But on the other hand whats not subjective is that they'd never release a game that has significant technical issues.
I think the Nintendo game with the most glitches I've played was Super Mario Sunshine and even that is not in any way comparable to something like Fallout 76 or the PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077.
That's probably not a fair comparison but you get the point.

More companies creates diversity and competition. Today’s gamers really have it good all 3 companies are doing something different, Sony with the big budget single player games, Microsoft with game pass and multiplayer games and Nintendo always being creative with their titles. What is boils down to is, for the longest time, Nintendo was a tiny ship in the storm of scummy industry practices, and people felt they could rely on them to not do scummy things, and have some great game franchises to enjoy along the way. So when Nintendo ultimately did succumb to the shady practices, it felt like a bigger betrayal. Plus it's a lot harder to not but their stuff out of protest. I mean, it's easy to not buy the next EA or Ubisoft game when they engage in anti-consumer practices, but try holding off on the new Zelda, becomes it bit harder, huh? Nintendo still has good games people don't want to skip on, which gives them leverage to do all this scummy stuff to begin with but not really hurt themselves financially.

Personally, I would think it’d be good PR if Nintendo allowed fan games, at least the free ones. To be honest I really haven't liked the direction Nintendo as a company has gone since the Switch launched. A lot of what modern Nintendo does just seems cash-grabby to me. It doesn't feel right. They're losing their soul to success.

The whole fan game thing isn't something that is clear one way or another.
On the one hand, Nintendo does indeed have the right to stop fans from using their IP for their own projects, and they do have to be indiscriminate when they threaten legal action since the one day they really need to shut a project down (like someone making a game with Mario using and selling drugs, for instance), a judge could ask Nintendo why they have let other fans go through with projects but not this one. So it's understandable why Nintendo goes after fan games.
On the other hand, it does seem really odd that fan games only seem to get Nintendo's attention once they are either finished or close to completion. That's a lot of hard work down the drain and Nintendo could learn a thing or two from how Sega handles their fans who make Sonic games. Sonic Mania, anyone?

    • @magicjohnson3121

I remember reading an article once which described when Nintendo hired some guys to help them create network code for Wii U and at the board meeting the network guys were like “okay, the best example I think we could follow would be XBOX Live,” and all the Nintendo execs just sort of stared blankly before someone informed the network guy that none of them had ever heard of XBOX Live. I think this example illustrates that Nintendo isn’t malicious so much as it’s extremely insular and often out-of-touch. However, I credit that with their ability to innovate so often. Nintendo doesn’t often copycat other industry trends or even try to compete on equal footing, likely because they’re barely paying attention to their competitors. They’re only competing with themself. I think that’s ballsy and cool.

Recently, something that's really irked me is the constant connection disruptions in Pac-man 99. It was so irritating I felt betrayed after buying so many games from the eshop, so I now have no desire to give them a cent (I'm hoping second-hand buying will accomplish this although I don't even know when I'll be ready to buy a new game). Any company that isn't willing to be ethical is a bad company in my book -- screwing over customers shouldn't be necessary for the success of a business. The aforementioned disconnections haven't been happening recently, so hopefully that's fixed for good. If they clean up their act, maybe I can consider supporting them in the future...

Hey, firstly, I love your content and the theme song rocks!!! I find myself humming it for hours after watching your vids.
I am a bit of a fanboy here, but I love that Nintendo makes games and game systems. They didn’t hop on the bandwagon of trying to be an all-in-one media solution, but rather producing dedicated gaming devices and games. The Cube was a perfect example. It played games at the time of DVD. I know there was a Panasonic solution for a hybrid and of course their later hardware ended up supporting youtube and netflix and yada yada, but I still feel that their focus was/is on games. My largest criticism would be their third party support is still pretty weak, though it’s much better on Switch than their last three.
Keep up the great content and I’ll keep on clicking!

The Gamecube's biggest problem was it was released in arguably the best console generation ever. Gamecube, Dreamcast, Xbox and PS2. There's no bad choices. That sounds great but for the company it makes it impossible to say "We're better than the competition because..." when the competition is equal or perhaps better. N64 era, even though they got crushed, that generation they could point to the 3DO, Atari Jaguar, PC-FX, FM Towns Marty, Apple Pippin, AmigaCD32 as examples of things they were vastly superior to. Couldn't say the same the following generation.
I knew people with PS2 and Xbox. I wanted the Dreamcast so Gamecube at the time didn't really have any reason to grab my attention back then. The only thing I knew it was good for was Star Wars games. I mean even just PC Games had my attention more than console games did. Now that I have one I see what I missed out on.

Check it out. When companies say the customer is always right or first, that assumes the customers are adults, and not changing that age status (remaining adults). They try to act like they care about the customer. In the case of Nintendo and a lot of us growing up with their products, they met our needs then, but as we grew up, we'll, they kept pandering to kids: not us! We're second fiddle/afterthoughts = they don't care about us. Tough situation for a company to deal with, but obviously they care about their visions and making dollars. So, the truth comes out here about businesses, moreso than other companies with continual grown up customers, since they can hide it and don't have this issue. I can say I am Nintendo for life, but I haven't liked a console of theirs since the N64. I want a console. Not a freaking switch. And I want top notch graphics for our time with 2D Mario games. That's what this old kid wants!! With an NES style D pad and horizontal 2 button layout. Is that too much to ask for?!?!? Lol So... I got an Analogue NT, Super NT, and Mega SG. I also have spent tons on Retro games. Could been thousands of dollars to Nintendo for this one person, but they didn't scratch that itch. They missed out and continue to. They need to treat all age groups, including their original customers, equal, with their product lineup imo.

Personally, none of the things Nintendo actively does bothers me much. Taking down fan games? I don't play 'em anyway. Taking down ROM sites? They'll always be available for download somewhere. Make consoles with wacky gimmicks? Plenty of traditional gaming experiences to be played on them anyway.
It's usually what they DON'T do that bothers me. Not making another F-Zero, not releasing EarthBound/MOTHER games (as often as they could), not putting games that people actually want on the Switch Online NES/SNES, not marketing their games all that well.

I think when it comes down to adulation for a company is misplaced. It isn’t the companies that had a major impact on your childhood, they just just wanted a great bottom line. It’s the creators of your favorite games that had the ideas and passion. Nintendo or any other company would have quit as soon as the revenue stopped.

For me, my love-hate relationship with Nintendo stems from them sending cease and desist to emulation websites. I get that it's their stuff, but at the same time it's upsetting from a preservation perspective. They only seem to care about a select few games and only re-release them over and over again. Then there are games that have no owner anymore and arcade games that get swept away with their stuff. It can be very frustrating.

I’ve always loved Nintendo, but selling Mario 64 (and Sunshine/Galaxy) for the 10th time in a $60 package within a limited timeframe recently rubbed me the wrong way. I bought it new, bought it again used, bought it on DS (albeit it’s a different take), bought it again on Wii’s Virtual Console, and now this last rerelease. That made me realize they’re becoming more of a faceless corporate money grab company like Disney, resting on its laurels. That, and the sheer lack of accessibility to its back catalog has recently made my love for them compartmentalized into the pre-Wii U era and a reluctant disdain for them in the present. My 2 cents if that makes sense.

I have such mixed feelings for Nintendo. But when I just look at my consoles and (physical) game collection that's maybe how I feel in the end of the day. So many great games that I could never have played on other companies' consoles and these games made me keep buying Nintendo's consoles.
Two things about Nintendo that we all can agree on probably:
1 - underpowered consoles (kind of always)
    2 - bad at internet
But even with these two weaknesses Nintendo has made it great! Not perfect but really great, I would say.
And yeah, some game series has been a mystery. What happened to F Zero after the great game for GameCube? And where is our Punch Out? And why the insanely long wait from 1994 to 2021 for a new 2D Metroid saga for a home console??
Another thing I don't like but understand: Super Mario 3D All Stars. Well, still un-sold copies in stores but the decision to make it time limited was not fun from a consumer perspective. And why no Super Mario Galaxy 2? I don't care that Super Mario 64 still is 4:3 and not even 1080p - I wouldn't mind 16:9 1080p but I'm just happy to have the game and I appreciate that it's still 4:3 which is the aspect ratio that they developed the game for - never forget that! Would have been fun of course with both a 4:3 and and a 16:9 version of Super Mario 64 so we all can choose version and give both a chance.
We have much to thank Nintendo for. It's also very much thanks to Nintendo that we even have Sony Playstation!
It's very hard to 100% please all at least 10s of millions of customers all the time from the 80s to now and in the future. I believe that they are doing as good as they can.
Some actions that Nintendo should have a lot of credit for:
1 - how they treated the customers that bought 3DS for the launch price and then they cut the price a lot. These customers got the possibility to download exclusive games for free and these games has never ever been made available for all other customers no matter how much money they show that they have.
2 - the re-release of NES Classic Mini in June 2018. Nintendo wanted all people that couldn't buy it at the release in november 2016 to get a new and even better chance to buy it.
So yeah it's some kind of love for Nintendo but it's itchy sometimes for sure. It feels like a long-term relationship with ups and downs. I'm very thankful for a lot of what they has done for us all.
