Did you know that he married Phoebe Cates from Fast Times at Ridgemont High? She was the beautiful brunette girl in the swimming pool. She quit acting and became a mom and has her own boutique
You are possibly the first serious reactor to take this film on. Brilliant concept using very talented actors! I'm voicing my thoughts before I watch what I expect to be an enjoyable reaction. Footnote: the set used was constructed for the film The American President and went on to be used by the TV series West Wing. From the comments below you have some impressive suggestions to consider. For your analytical mind take on Stranger Than Fiction to react to. I have a very worthwhile subscription to your efforts and may there be many more...
Dave and Bill Mitchell was played by Kevin Kline. He has been in numerous movies, but the one I love is: A Fish Called Wanda. He whon a best supporting actor oscar for it. I would highly suggest that movie. This movie has three academy award nominees: Frank Langella (Richard Nixon in Frost/Nixon) Sigourney Weaver (Support Actress - Working Girl) Kevin Kline (Supporting actor - A Fish Called Wanda) he also won the award
Ben Stein, who you recognized from Ferris Bueller's Day Off actually served as a speechwriter for President Nixon and Ford before he moved on to acting. Thus, in that movie, he gave the economics lesson on the fly (it wasn't scripted as to what he would teach). He knows a great deal about economics and politics. So having him in the White House or Capitol is rather fitting. He would be right at home.
This movie and The American President are two of my favorites. The American President is written by Aaron Sorkin who is also the creator of The West Wing and The Newsroom (two of my favorite TV series). You should definitely check out some other Kevin Kline films - A Fish Called Wanda, French Kiss, In & Out, Life as a House, and The Big Chill.
I have them on one DVD! I was in a random gas station looking at a display of DVDs, and there was one with An American President and Dave in the same pack! It was $5.
The presidential helicopter is Marine One, because it is a Marine aircraft, Air Force One is an Air Force aircraft. Technically, there could be a Navy One and Army One if necessary. The "One" designation goes on any aircraft the President is on, not just the "official" ones.
35:31 "Wouldn't a widow of a president still have secret service?" Yoda: Guarding Tess. You seek 1994's Guarding Tess, with Nicolas Cage and Shirley MacLaine. 😂😂😂 Wonderful watchalong, James. Glad this got chosen!
Actually, a widowed First Lady would receive Secret Service protection until and unless she remarries. So Ellen would lose her protection if she married Dave.
Frank Langella as Bob Alexander is such a great baddie! He does the simmering volcano under the surface bit so well. Sigourney Weaver really shows off both her dramatic and comedic acting skills here. And Charles Grodin is just a delight. You should watch Midnight Run, where he plays another accountant opposite Robert DeNiro.
A big YES to Midnight Run. Charles Grodin is fabulous in the comedy Heart and Souls starring Robert Downey Jr. So many excellent performers in that one.
Wag the Dog (1997), directed by Barry Levinson, who also directed Rainman and Good Morning, Vietnam, and starring everyone, including Robert DeNiro and Dustin Hoffman, is a great behind the scenes of politics movie. It's described as a political satire black comedy and that's pretty accurate. I very highly recommend it. If you dodn't question everything thrown at you by the media now you definitely will after Wag the Dog.
Then there's Gene Belcher's "Die Hard: The Musical," which was combined with Courtney Wheeler's "Working Girl" into "Work Hard or Die Trying Girl." Now THAT would be a school play worth seeing!;)
15:53 Presidents actually can go on the balcony the streets surrounding the mansion are closed off a certain distance. And if someone were to enter, the Secret Service catches them. So the President is safe from any kind of sniper. They're not allowed at a certain length of distance from the White House to do that.
In answer to your question regarding widowed first ladies and the Secret Service, I would recommend checking out 'Guarding Tess' starring Shirley Maclaine and Nicholas Cage, It is another really good comedy that you would really enjoy. You will recognize Shirley from her role in 'Steel Magnolias' as the cranky Ouiser Boudreaux.
OMG! Great film choice! This is such a sweet movie! The President is played by Kevin Kline; he has a large filmic resume and any one of them is interesting and good. The assistant Randi, tasked with finding a body double for the President (the woman he collapses on), is Laura Linney (played the 'wife' in "The Truman Show"). The baseball field is Camden Yards (Baltimore Orioles). Baltimore is the closest major baseball team to Washington, DC. (I used to live in Baltimore.) The park across the street from the front of the White House is Lafayette Square. It's where Trump had protestors cleared out with tear gas in June 2020 before walking across the street for his photo op holding a bible upside down in front of St John's Church. The conspiracy theorist guy trying to blow the whistle on the 'body double' thing is filmmaker Oliver Stone (also produced a great body of work and worth reacting to). First of all, the Constitution requires the US president to be at least 35 years old (25 for Congress). -Obama was 47; and if you saw his White House Correspondents' Dinner speeches, they were HYSTERICAL! Great timing, great delivery, could have been a standup star. One year, he included Keegan Michael-Key playing 'Luther', Obama's anger translator (it's on UA-cam). -Bill Clinton was 46 and had a great wit. He liked food, so was a bit chubby, but he was always out jogging and exercising, to try to keep the weight down. -Jimmy Carter was 52; he exercised regularly, swimming and riding horses and fished creeks and rivers. He was credited with a great sense of humor. -John F Kennedy was 43. He initiated and championed fitness in America through the President's Council on Physical Fitness. Public schools broke several times a week to do exercise. The whole Kennedy clan was known for their physical activities and team sports, and Kennedy for his humor. His presidency was considered youth-oriented and his administration referred to as Camelot (after the youthful and fabled King Arthur's court that united Britain). -Theodore Roosevelt was 42. In spite of health issues as a child and young man, he enjoyed the out of doors, going hunting, camping, hiking, and riding horses. He was also very funny.
Oliver Stone's interview was a joke. He had just made a conspiracy theory movie about JFK, so him suspecting a conspiracy that's actually true is really funny.
Secret service guy was there at the end for Dave. Probably quit his job to be his minder on his way up through office. After all, he admitted he would’ve died for him.
I'll answer a couple questions as best I can. A former president and first lady get secret service protection for life. If they have minor children, they get secret service protection to the age of 16. They can decline protection if they choose. It is not unusual for agents who have been protecting the first family to continue to protect them after they leave the white house. I assume the agent at the end was assigned to protect the former first lady upon request. Since Kennedy there have been rumors of a tunnel from the White House leading to outside the gate. JFK supposedly used it to meet mistresses. No one actually doubts this rumor, but I don't know if it's ever been verified. It would be a state secret if there was. Ben Stein was a Nixon speech writer before he became an actor
Ben Stein, the teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, was a speech writer for presidents Nixon and Ford. He's a writer, lawyer, actor, comedian, and commentator on political and economic issues.
Have you seen 'Silverado' yet? It's a western with an all-star cast: Kevin Kline (Dave), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon), Brian Dennehy (First Blood), Scott Glenn (The Hunt for Red October), John Cleese (Monty Python), Jeff Goldblum (The Fly), Linda Hunt (Kindergarten Cop), and Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction). Great movie, scenery, music. Both drama and humor, too.
Released in 1993. Directed by Ivan Reitman (same director of Stripes and Ghostbusters I and II), and written by Gary Ross, who co-wrote "Big" with Tom Hanks and directed the first Hunger Games movie. Dave was nominated for one Academy Award in 1993 - Best Original Screenplay for Gary Ross. It didn't win its nomination. The set used for the White House has since been used in over twenty-five movies since its release, including The Pelican Brief and Clear and Present Danger. Kevin Kline, who plays Dave/The President, later appeared as a dual role in "Wild Wild West" as the co-lead character and President Ulysses S. Grant. Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and Michael J. Fox were all considered for the role of Dave. Kevin Costner declined the role, as did Warren Beatty (James, I don't believe you've seen Beatty yet, but you have seen all the others). Names that can be added to James' actor database after their second film (or more): Laura Linney as Randi (also in The Truman Show); Kevin Dunn as Alan Reed (also in Unstoppable as the railroad president); Stephen Root as Don Durenberger (O Brother Where Art Thou?, Office Space as Milton, Ghost, and Dodgeball); Ving Rhames (previously as Marsellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction). If I forgot anybody, let me know. Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver later appeared in the 1997 film The Ice Storm. Interestingly, Ben Kingsley (the Vice-President) is British. Richard Donner (Superman, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon, and Scrooged) was offered the chance to direct, largely because his wife Lauren Shuler Donner had known Gary Ross since the 1970s and would be the producer. But he passed on it, and Shuler Donner had to wait a few years for Disney to release her from her contract. Gary Ross gave then-President Bill Clinton a framed script, which Clinton later autographed, and he later gave Ross a picture of him holding a coffee mug with the word "Dave" on it.
I used to live in the DC area. I made it a goal to visit every presidential monument. There's so much hidden all over, you need to go back. And you have to see the Smithsonian. I agree with you about the Korean memorial. More impactful to me than Amy of the others
Great movie. Very underrated movie I am surprise you react to it :) . This movie remind me the classic film Mr Smith goes to Washington with Jimmy Stewart which you can also see. You should see another great underrated movie by Kevin Kline which is called The Emperor's Club a great drama.
Sir Ben Kingsley is an absolute Master of his Craft. He should have his own day of the week for reactions to his films, his catalog of work is SO vast and SO brilliant you'd be shortchanging yourself to think he is just 'some actor'😁He is Masterful at all genres of cinema and is so versatile he can sway you as Ghandi or as Guru Tugginmypudha🤣👍edit: Nor does he always have to be the 'star' of his films, he has played MANY supporting characters as he did in this film. A True Master.
Ben Kingsley is fantastic in everything he's in. I highly recommend Searching for Bobby Fisher and Sneakers, both with all-star casts. Two incredible films that aren't on the radar of most people.
JFK was very young, with a young First Lady and an atmosphere of youth, intelligence and energy permeated his speeches, his appearances and family events. The Kennedy clan was always involved in sports and outdoor activities. Clinton was also young, with a young Vice-President and would sometimes step outside the typical reserved role of a president by playing his saxophone or jogging. It is crucial for heads of state to present a mature demeanor to the world so publicly rolling on the ground with dogs might not be accepted well. But there were instances when most previous presidents publicly displayed friendly banter, sweet gestures to family, sincere and compassionate responses to citizens and the other characteristics that “Dave” showed.
For Presidential comedy, I always vote Dave and My Fellow Americans (think you’ve seen that???? If not, watch!!!) My ‘Dave’ story - this came out end of 7th grade school year. This was our field trip movie. Our grade had just gone through The Constitution and government, so when the part of the movie where Dave was going through the Balance of Powers, the entire theater of 7th graders cracked up!! Great movie - but they wouldn’t let us get popcorn. 😢
I've always loved The American President (1995) more, but I do love Dave and how well he did as fake president, the good that he did, and the love story with the First Lady. I do hope you'll watch the former, though, directed by Rob Reiner (who did Stand By Me, A Few Good Men, Misery, and When Harry Met Sally. . .). It stars Annette Bening (Harrison Ford's wife in Regarding Henry), Michael Douglas (of Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, Falling Down, The Game, War of the Roses, and the MCU), Michael J. Fox, Martin Sheen, John Mahoney (the dad on Frasier), and Richard Dreyfuss.
I remember the code name for a helicopter is Marine One. I think the Secret Service also calls it “Angel”. I’ve thought that were I a president, I’d want the WH Communications Office to assign me the name “Sketchpad” because a sketchpad is blank, exciting the mind to just come up with ideas unhindered.
Kevin Kline is a greatly underrated actor and has been in so many fantastic films. I always think this movie should be required viewing for anyone going into politics on either side of the pond (I'm in the UK)
The minimum age allowed for the office of the President of the United States is 35. Barak Obama was 47 when he was elected President. The youngest president of the US was Teddy Roosevelt at 42 when he assumed the presidency after Woodrow Wilson died in office. John F Kennedy was 43. And since you asked, the first ever government shutdown was May 1, 1980 during Jimmy Carter's presidency.
I’ve long said this film should be required viewing ANNUALLY for every single sitting elected official in DC/at the Federal level… and perhaps at the State level as well. Heaven help We The Peasants!!!!!🙄 Likewise- the 1991 film ‘The Doctor’ with William Hurt should be required viewing for all graduating med students. Always a great time catching a flick w you, sir; appreciate you! Stay safe & love big💖
Hija James :) What a heartwarming Movie , Ben Kingsley (the Vice President) got famous for his Role in Ghandi and hes great in Sneakers (the Movie not the Shoes) Another great Movie with Kevin Kline(Dave ;) ) is a Fish called Wanda . I'm quite sure You'll laugh your Heart out when You watch it ! @Politics .... Let me put it that way ; I'm so glad I don't live in the US 'cause there's so many things going Wrong over there (Lack of Healthcare ,Gun Laws & 2nd Ammendment misuse, divisevness in Gouvernment and People , religious fanatism , stupid imperial system, the List goes on and on) . Don't get me wrong , Germany ain't perfect and we've got lots of problems, but it's a Paradise compared to the U.S. Anyway let's get back to great Movies ,shall we ? :)
The maain reason i watch you i because of your laugh. It is so genuine almost innocent and totally infectious. You are a breath of fresh air to reactions.
Great cameos in this movie! That white haired reporter who asked “How are you feeling?” just before 13:50 is author Richard Reeves. It’s the one time Oliver Stone was correct about a conspiracy.
I always loved this movie but the ending always left me in a weird place. Like...if the widow of a President started dating an exact doppelganger of her late husband, she would be immediately institutionalized.
I love that you reacted to this one!! It's so heartwarming 😊 You seriously need to watch "Dick" (1999) with Kirsten Dunst and Dan Hedaya as Richard Nixon. It's a comedy about the Watergate scandal and it's hilarious!!! 😂
"Dave": What happens when "an ordinary guy" starts out as a look-alike then becomes "leader of the free world?" I found it to be a wonderfully "warm and fuzzy" movie where Heart and Soul overcome partisan politics. Yes siree, pure "Capracorn, as they used to call it, and sorely needed in these difficult times.;)
Hey, it's Phil, and I just thought of a movie that you would really enjoy. "Being There (1979)" is a brilliant Peter Sellers film that is right in line with the movies you've been reacting to lately. I hope you can find a place for it in the rotation soon. 🤗
Ben Kinglesy was the VEEP, and he's an Oscar winner. Perhaps his best work is the truly epic movie, Gandhi. Check it out. It's beautiful and great. The funeral procession was attended by 1,000,000 extras -- actual people, not CG.
The "little park across the street" from the White House is actually the Warner Ranch backlot in Burbank - with the White House inserted into the background. The fountain is the same one seen in the opening credits for "Friends". Regrettably the backlot was just recently demolished for redevelopment - although the fountain was saved and relocated to Warner's main studio a mile to the South. And , by the way, sometimes you "know" people from movies that you don't realize you know. For example, the bespectacled member of the president's cabinet was played by Parley Baer, the original voice of Ernie Keebler from the cookie commercials.
Teddy Roosevelt, JFK & Clinton were young. The minimum is 35. I think Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, now 34, would be great. Ben Stein is a former presidential speechwriter, political commentator, and game show host, as well as sometime-actor.
Regarding the secret service detail. Yes former Presidents and their spouses are provided secret service protection, however they can decline this service at any time.
For more of Dave(Kevin Kline) watch. “Silverado” which also has Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, David Carradine, & Rosanna Arquette! For more of Sigourney Weaver watch working girl with Melanie Griffith & Ed Harris from The Rock! Nice Reaction!!
Kevin Kline most memorable in A Fish called Wanda, though my favourite roles of his are "In & Out, 1997" and " Life as a House, 2001". Always enjoy your reactions from way down south in Aotearoa New Zealand. Thanks for your light-hearted, gleeful, genuine reactions.
Edited from Wikipedia to answer your question of who the real man is: Ben Stein an American writer, lawyer, actor, comedian, and commentator on political and economic issues. He began his career as a speechwriter for U.S. presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford before entering the entertainment field as an actor, comedian, and game show host. He is best known on screen as the economics teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, as the host of Win Ben Stein's Money, and as Dr. Arthur Neuman in The Mask and Son of the Mask. Stein is the son of economist and writer Herbert Stein, who worked at the White House under President Nixon. As a character actor he is well known for his droning, monotonous delivery. In comedy, he is known for his deadpan delivery.
You should watch *Midnight Run* with Charles Grodin (the accountant). *Kindergarten Cop* with 'Ahnold' is a bit different than his usual role. *Searching for Bobby Fischer* with Ben Kingsley (the VP) is based on a true story about a chess prodigy.
For a long time this was my go to "feel good" movie to watch when I felt down and just wanted some positivity in my life. The video tape of this finally got worn out.
Kevin Kline is one of the most underrated actors of our time. Wish he had done more after the 90s

It’s a feel-good movie, James’ll love it. Let’s see!
(Edit: he did!)
Forgot how much I enjoyed this movie, and your enjoyment is infectious, Thank You for the review.
Former First Ladies do get Secret Service protection....which you can confirm with actually another really funny movie called Guarding Tess.
35:30 - to answer your question, consider watching movie
"Guarding Tess"
With Nicolas Cage and Shirley MacLaine. It's a sweet movie.

For Presidential comedy, I always vote Dave and My Fellow Americans (think you’ve seen that???? If not, watch!!!)
My ‘Dave’ story - this came out end of 7th grade school year. This was our field trip movie. Our grade had just gone through The Constitution and government, so when the part of the movie where Dave was going through the Balance of Powers, the entire theater of 7th graders cracked up!! Great movie - but they wouldn’t let us get popcorn. 😢
Ben Stein, the guy from Ferris Bueller, was a speech writer for Nixon and Ford. He was also the valedictorian of his class at Yale Law School.
Big brain
All the major members of the press shown were actual major press ppl back in the day.
I love that movie. In French, it is titled "Président d'un jour" (president for a day)
Kevin Kline is a greatly underrated actor and has been in so many fantastic films. I always think this movie should be required viewing for anyone going into politics on either side of the pond (I'm in the UK)
Your laugh is so infectious! Just loving your channel, thank you for all you do! 💛
I'm so happy to hear it. That's what this channel is all about. Making people's day a little better
Good info thanks
Kevin Kline was great in this. I loved him in Silverado, if you haven't seen that yet. Enjoyed watching with you as always, James.
Dwight Eisenhower 's middle name was David. 0:49
😂 Beat me to it, had to check comments before posting!!
I’ve long said this film should be required viewing ANNUALLY for every single sitting elected official in DC/at the Federal level… and perhaps at the State level as well. Heaven help We The Peasants!!!!!🙄
Likewise- the 1991 film ‘The Doctor’ with William Hurt should be required viewing for all graduating med students.
Always a great time catching a flick w you, sir; appreciate you!
Stay safe & love big💖
That's the tunnel Kennedy used to sneak in Marilyn into the White House.
Hija James :)
What a heartwarming Movie , Ben Kingsley (the Vice President) got famous for his Role in Ghandi and hes great in Sneakers (the Movie not the Shoes)
Another great Movie with Kevin Kline(Dave ;) ) is a Fish called Wanda .
I'm quite sure You'll laugh your Heart out when You watch it !
@Politics ....
It's so heartwarming 😊
You seriously need to watch "Dick" (1999) with Kirsten Dunst and Dan Hedaya as Richard Nixon. It's a comedy about the Watergate scandal and it's hilarious!!! 😂
My favorite Kevin Kline movie is “A Fish Called Wanda.” “My Life As A House” is pretty good too.
Added thanks
Basically a remake of Moon Over Parador (with Richard Dreyfuss and Raul "It was only a Tuesday" Julia). I've always liked that movie
Marine One is the Name of the Helicopter, the Marines control the Helicopter and the Air Force controls the Airplane
Figured you'd get a kick out of this one. Can't wait for your reaction to "Hugo."
Great reaction James, I too went into this movie blind & absolutely loved it.
Hey, it's Phil, and I just thought of a movie that you would really enjoy. "Being There (1979)" is a brilliant Peter Sellers film that is right in line with the movies you've been reacting to lately. I hope you can find a place for it in the rotation soon. 🤗
"The American President" is a GREAT movie. Staring Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. That could be the next "President" movie you watch ❤❤❤❤🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
The 1st pitch was the Baltimore Orioles
Yeah, thank you
Ben Kinglesy was the VEEP, and he's an Oscar winner. Perhaps his best work is the truly epic movie, Gandhi. Check it out. It's beautiful and great. The funeral procession was attended by 1,000,000 extras -- actual people, not CG.
Obama was young as young as Kevin Klein in this movie when he got elected. He was inspiring and charismatic and funny.
Ok good so there isn't a park there. That's what I thought
So glad this was selected! this is one of my all time favorite feel good flicks! 🙌🙌❤❤
A very underrated little movie!
I love this movie:)
5:07 I keep hearing Mr. Covid... Am I nuts.
I liked the Korean War memorial too, amazing layout
Kevin Kline most memorable in A Fish called Wanda, though my favourite roles of his are "In & Out, 1997" and " Life as a House, 2001". Always enjoy your reactions from way down south in Aotearoa New Zealand. Thanks for your light-hearted, gleeful, genuine reactions.
Yes Sir-ee-Bob, a presidential widow gets Secret Service protection to the end of her days.
this is one of my favorite movies to watch and rewatch.
I would like to 'more than' talk to Sigourner Weaver. How do I get that job?
JAMES/DAVE 2024!
Edited from Wikipedia to answer your question of who the real man is:
Ben Stein an American writer, lawyer, actor, comedian, and commentator on political and economic issues.
Kindergarden Cop is a great Arnold movie
Clinton had some fun!😂
Have you ever watched the best show made IMO? “24” is top tier.
I would absolutely recommend watching 'Wag the Dog' (1997)

For a long time this was my go to "feel good" movie to watch when I felt down and just wanted some positivity in my life. The video tape of this finally got worn out.
The writer guy was in the runaway train movie.
The age of the President, doesn't matter. We need someone who can get things done.
I think we need an age limit at this point. If can make an age min we should have a max
Such a great movie 😁
i have seen this movie 100's of times : )
Dang
My vote for US pesidency movie is Being There with Peter Sellers.
I forgot the Dry Eyes guy was an actor
OMG, I love this movie so much!
You asked if the guy was a real person or an actor. His name is Ben stein And he is an actor, economics teacher, and political pundit.
