It creates some inconsistencies in the character that the twist surrounds in my mind but other than that..this was a quick read that finished in a day!

the epilogue still is getting me- I read up that Frieda has confirmed that she knew Jay was who he was at school...so why would she think that he was actually married and had children during those scenes?? I just can't wrap my head entirely around it

Since this is a spoiler comment I can explain: the book never says "his wife". It always says "her" or "she" and we as the readers imply it's his wife, not his mom.
My only issue with the epilogue is that means he then makes the hour drive (and that's just one way) to the pumpkin patch twice, helps Eve kill Nate, and covers for Addie AGAIN after he spent a year not speaking to her for helping cover up her dad's murder. It shook him up SO much, yet he had no issues helping with what went down in acts 2 and 3.

Legit the only hint was that Hudson/Jay was good at math…. Hmm wonder why! But I don’t get why they didn’t see each other at school?! How could they not?? Also the fact that the detective was female 👌🏼 perfection because she was like why is your wife getting her EXPENSIVE shoes muddy? Equivalent to when Elle Woods was like THE POOL BOY IS GAY because he knew she was “tapping last season’s Prada shoes” at him waiting for the water fountain

Hi! I was an English teacher too (retired recently). So yes, we look at school-centered books with very critical eyes. Were there a few things unrealistic? Sure. But I really didn't care. Was the writing meticulously crafted? No. This was not To Kill a Mockingbird, and that is totally ok! Sometimes all I want is a book to thrill me, chill me. And The Teacher did the trick. I read it in a little over a day. I like to use analogies, so here's one: sometimes you want a beautifully crafted, multi-course meal that will be in your memory forever. Sometimes you want a kickass pizza. That's what The Teacher is - a kickass pizza. And we all deserve one every now and then. If you like academic settings in your thrillers, I highly recommend For Your Own Good, by Samantha Downing.

Yes! That analogy perfectly describes my attitude toward reading. And congrats on retirement! I’ll definitely check out your recommendation, thanks for passing that along!

The note to leave school even had me going “what?”. Super unrealistic IMO. And I wondered about the shoes too. I assumed their credit card bill was insanely high and stayed that way,

Just finished tonight: I have a few thoughts that may be semi- spoilerish.
As always, it was a book I read in a day because it kept me intrigued. I'm also a teacher and on spring break until Monday so of course I had to get this! I agreed with you that parts were so unrealistic like Nate letting Addie go home early. It happens with me when watching Abbott Elementary sometimes too lol but I moved past it.
However, I had trouble getting past some of the inconsistencies in the Hudson/Jay. He was so shaken up by helping Addie cover up her dad's death that he doesn't talk to her for a year. Yet he jumps right in to drive to the pumpkin patch an hour each way (twice) and also helps Eve bury Nate with no issues.
Also..why would the detective not ever attempt to seize Nate's phone right away to analyze it as the husband? I mean we have digital forensics technology in 2024!
But overall I took it for what it was..a work of fiction that kept my mind engaged!

8:56 i’m stopping you right here. I am new to her books as well. This is only my third one. And my blood was boiling when I got to the midpoint. I was not expecting the storyline. I cannot wait to hear what you think of the end. once I finished it completely I liked it. But throughout I was not sure.😮 21:38 I really enjoyed watching you read this and hearing your take on it. I felt pretty much the same way though. I am not a teacher. I did not have any of it figured out. Well, maybe just the part about the girl at school.😉
