I think my biggest thrift tip is to have patience and be picky! Only buy items you're confident you'll wear. I rarely ever bring home a thrift haul bigger than 2-3 items. By doing this, I now have a closet full of clothes I love 💙
i agree! the cool thing about thrifting imo is that you can afford to be so picky because the items are cheap. shopping retail can sometimes convince you to like a piece because you paid a lot of money for it, so the value is both in the clothing article AND how much money you spent on it. with thrifting, everything is around the same, cheap price so the value of the item comes entirely from how it looks and how it makes you feel!
Me too I spend hours searching and then at the end I go through everything more closely and ask myself important questions and get 1-3 items but now I feel better about my purchases and especially since i’m beginning to invest my money.
i also like how even if it does end up being smth u don’t like, u didn’t pay a lot of money for it so u don’t feel as bad getting rid of it :) (selling/donating)
this is super helpful for me to hear 😭😭 because of the fact that everything at the thrift store is so cheap, i find myself wanting to take home every little thing i see because "oh, it wasn't much money so i might as well 🤷🏾♂️", but i'd much rather end up 100% loving every piece of clothing i have

-Check the kids section for misplaced things, like crop tops, kids sizing can also fit a lot of different body types
-check go-back racks near dressing rooms, or areas around mirrors for things that people picked out but decided not to buy. Sometimes all the vintage stuff in the store will be all together in places like those!
-Sometimes I'll bring a measuring tape since dressing rooms are closed and I know my measurements
-Check pajamas and lingerie sections for silk/satin/lace things, and corsets that may have been misplaced
These are such good tips! Some of my best finds are from these places!!

A thrift tip from me is to wash your clothes before you wear them or try them on.
You never know where the clothes have been and you always want be safe. 😊
You should always do that with any clothing you buy
BEST TIP FOR VALUE VILLAGE: if you donate used items before you shop you get a 20% off coupon!! I do this almost every time I go thrifting, a good way of clearing out space in my closet for the new gems I’ll find that day!

Thrifting tip: be open to altering. if there's a top you like, but it doesn't fit you can crop it or sew it in a little ;)

Thrift tip! Don’t buy items which are overpriced. Even if it’s a good brand second hand clothing at thrift shops should no be too expensive
TIPS THAT I DIDN'T SEE IN THE COMMENTS
-Learn about fabrics! That way you can spot high end items by feel. You may not recognize the brand name but you will recognize the quality!
-Buy what you love, not what you like!! Never settle!
-Have a mental list of what is on your ultimate dream list!
- Buy an item you LOVE even if you don't have anything to wear it with now. You can have fun finding inspo on pinterest etc. on how to style it... then look out for pieces to complete the outfit on future thrifting trips.
- Before going shopping do a little research by looking at images of what your favourite influencers/actors/musicians are wearing. Check out clothing brand websites that you like, check out designers etc! Whatever inspires you! *After your research think about what kind of items you would really love to own and are missing from your closet. That gives you a list of the types of clothing items AND the style you would like to find them in! Mostly don't settle!
-Learn how to sew buttons and how to fix seams that have come apart. *Replacing buttons on a garment can make it an individual, unique piece and gives you creative freedom!
-If you are starting out, have limited time or energy. Just focus on one area of the store.
-LOOK at your closet before you go shopping! Most of us don't even remember what we have!

how would you reccomend starting to learn about fabrics? or at least, being able to recognize. currently i look at seams; if the seems still seem compact and small then its probably good quality. if you can see the seems or there’s threads coming loose, than its not worth it. even if it is cute.
Guys.. I found 1980’s BURBERRY red sweater vest in winter jackets just hiding there... it is my best thrifting item ever

I’ve gotten quite a few jones new york, one anne klein jacket. some shoes which brand i dont remember but was good. and thats about it. i havent been thrifting for very long tho.
My tip is, if you like something and it's cheap, get it, don't "leave it for someone else who'll pull it off better" - most likely it won't go to someone else, it'll go in the landfill. Most thrift stores throw away anything that doesn't sell in as little as a few weeks to a few months! So you're saving it from a landfill - even if you don't end up liking it, you can re-donate it and it has a better chance of being worn.
I love thrifting with you, it's the best thing next to actually going thrifting!!
my biggest tip is to wear easy on and off shoes, a tighter fitting tank top, and either a pair of leggings or biker shorts.
a lot of thrifts, even prior to COVID precautions, don't have dressing rooms and I have found that it's super easy to try things on over a tank top and especially biker shorts. also easy on and off shoes save you from having to retie your laces all day.
this has been incredibly helpful so i'm not wasting money on clothes that don't actually fit me. :)
Similar to the "look at the ends of racks" tip, anywhere there is a mirror in the store there will be a ton of stuff that people have tried on--like a "put back rack" bc dressing rooms are still mostly closed.

Here are a few of my tips.
1. Don't overthink stuff, if it sparks something toss it in the cart and then at the end do your final edit.
2. If you can try it on, sometimes things look really different on, I just find a corner and put things on over what I am wearing. I so miss changing rooms.
3.Buy out of season, yes you might have to wait to wear it but people clean out their closets at the end of a season so you can find some awesome stuff.
4. I am very picky and only get what I love.
Thrift tip: go to the thrift stores in “richer” areas. You can find a lot of cute, cool, brand new, once expensive, NAME BRAND clothing for dirt cheap!

I think I’ve said this before but it’s worth repeating- if you find something that you like but you’re Not sure- put it your cart and decide when you finish- otherwise, you may not be able to find it again or someone else may have snagged it!
I just want to mention that value village is a FOR PROFIT organization. So the money you spend there goes directly to their pockets. So beware of where you shop.
I didn’t know this until very recently. I would spend so much money there thinking I’m kinda supporting a good company. Nah not really. They buy nice stock from actual non profits, mark the price up for us to buy 🙃 so always do research about the thrift stores you shop at if it’s a concern for you ❤️❤️
Thrift tip: go through the women’s jeans by feel if you are looking for vintage jeans :) eventually it becomes easy to differentiate the cheap, thin jeans from the thick vintage denim

My best tip for thrifting is avoiding fast fashion brands entirely. I try to lean more towards brands I don’t know or brands that seem more luxurious. Better quality ensures that your thrift finds will last you a long time. Plus buying brands that your not familiar with might lead you too more unique finds.
okay how about this outfit idea: the yellow hooded zip with some type of green skirt to make it more spring appropriate then athletic sneakers a chain belt and jewelry to accessorize. I'd love to see this recreated!
Nothing like a new thrift with meee🥰
1) I think some people "hide" clothes in the wrong sections hoping to come back when the tag goes on sale. If I'm short on time, I'll scan racks for out of place items; long sleeves in sleeveless, etc.
2) if dressing rooms aren't open match seams to what you are wearing - side seams, rise, waist, bust.
3) thrifts are lousy at figuring out womens vs mens sizing. Same with active wear vs pj's/bra's.
4) best tip of all - never gain wt and be smaller than a size large. XL's and up are limited, esp any vintage, yet 60% of women are XL or larger.
My best tip is to know the materials, necklines and sleeves you like to make it easier to know if you’d like something. Also keeping a note of your measurements and measurements of items you love already.

I agree, going in the handbag section is the most fun in a thrift store!
I usually think about what section I’m most excited to look at and make a list from least excited to most excited and save the best for last. I love starting in the children’s section because they often have misplaced items or large/extra large clothing pieces. Then continue on in the order I’ve chosen and take my time!

All my coats are seccond hand.
I always check the purses and shoes.
Check always the old style Tupperware and dishes.
I use pitchers and coffeepots as vases.

another tip! if you see a piece of clothing that u like and if it’s too big see if it’s possible to stitch it to fit ur size. i found this super cute top at value village i bought it thinking it would fit me sadly it didn’t but i asked my mom if it was possible to stitch it to fit me and she did!

If there is changing rooms to try on the clothes look on the put back section where people pit back the clothes if they don't fit or if they don't like them because there is usually good stuff there

One of my biggest tips is to look in the MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SHOES. i have found two pairs of vintage doc martens in the men’s section in perfect condition.
Also if you have a red racks in your area sign up for the rewards if its available, they will occasionally do members only deals and its good to know about them!

Go to the kids section if your looking for crop tops
My top tip: Decide on 3-5 colours for your wardrobe colour scheme and only look for those colours when shopping.

Here’s a tip! I recommend going to dd’s discount if your own a low budget. The most u would pay for something is 25 bucks and the least being about 6 dollars. They have such cute clothes! Anytime I can go there I always do! And they even have changing rooms for you to try on the clothing. They also have decor,toys,snacks,and more! Its a really great store and if u can go I recommend you do!

BUT you can find many cute and good things like frames, plates...
ALWAYS look at the thrift shops first when you want something. Especially when it's normally expensive or bad for the enviroment
If you have the time go through racks multiple times to make sure you didn’t miss anything. And make sure that you’ll actually wear what you pick. My recent thrifting trip I got two items when I originally had I think seven.
