Hello Jenna, what a fun video! I adore your fearless approach. I'm actually the one who drafted this shacket pattern for Mood. I've collaborated with Mood on over 300 free patterns and still counting! Here are a few observations that might be helpful: [] The pattern is made for a woven fabric - your fabric was stretchy and bouncy, but you still made it work! I would suggest staystitching the neckline and curved hem edges to keep the shape. [] The front ends of the hem facing are meant to tuck under the button placket, so you will want to do the hem before you finish the placket. Don't feel bad - they didn't catch that in the Mood blog post either. ;) If desired, the hem facing can be omitted and you can just do a plain seam. [] I think you were right to skip the French seams - too bulky! [] I'm kicking myself for not including side-seam pockets, but it should be easy enough to add them by borrowing a pocket from another pattern, if desired. >>> Your final result looks really nice and cozy!
i’m a beginner and i’m loving working on this pattern i just can’t figure out how to sew the collar! can you help me out? i know Jenna said leave open the long side and attach the short but wouldn’t the side your leaving open be the one attaching?
@@emily.t11 So glad to hear you are ready to tackle sewing and get through the learning curve! For the collar, you sew the sides and top edge of the collar first. Then attach the one undercollar neckline to the shirt neckline with right-sides together. After that, neatly tuck under the SA's of the collar and topstitch in place.
... I know I'm not supposed to say it out loud. But Jenna gets alot of " omg that's so good! Looks amazing!!" When it should really be " great try, but better luck next time"
Good to know that sometimes there are steps missing on the blog. I do have problems so many times sewing mood patterns because of that. They use to be so awesome and easy, only if mood doesn't give for sure that people knows every step... Thank you very much!
I love the way you not only admit your mistakes, but go the extra mile to correct it and make it right. That’s how you learn…you don’t make the same mistake twice. You are adorable. 🥰♥️
Tip for opening button holes from my sewing teacher. Place a pin across the edge that you are cutting towards. The quick-unpick can't cut through the pin so you'll not rip through the fabric😊
A good tip for adding sleeves, waistbands, etc. is the snip a little notch in the seam allowance and line them up with top of sleeve and the armhole. Hope this helps!
Hi Jenna, here is a little tip when using a seam ripper to cut button holes. Put a pin in the end of button hole then seam ripper will only go that far and not rip any further. xxx PS Penelope has done a good job on the button holes.
Woow 🥺 I love to sew and I am a beginner. I searched for months to find free dress patterns to download and I found it in this video. Now I can make my own beautiful dresses. Thank you sooo much Jenna 🥺❤
I have had luck with prewashing my fabric in the harshest way that may happen to it. I prewash in hot water and rinse (or wash until dye stops bleeding) before throwing in my laundry machine for a cycle. Once the garment is made then I only wash my clothes in tap cold water and air dry. That has always worked well for me and I haven't noticed any fabric shrinkage after a garment is made.
I think you had this extra space at the bottom facing because you decided on using the serger instead of the french seam method which was likely accounted for in the pattern. The french seam generally takes up another inch or so which is exactly the extra space you had!
Hi Loeka... Catina here from PatternHack (I'm the collaborator who drafts almost all of the Mood patterns). The front ends of the hem facing are supposed to tuck under the button placket. This reduces bulk and gives a clean finish.
The ultimate trick of lining up serged seams(works best with serged seams), is to let the edges 'hug'. 1. Hold the two layers in your hand 2. fold the edge near to you to the left, fold the edge away from you to the right 3. Now a little 'edge' emerges because of the fold, both in opposite direction 4. press slightly both sides against eachother until you kinda feel the edges push aganst eachother. 5. pin it and just sew it with a few stitches with your sewing machine. 6. Pin the rest of your sleeve/whatever(I use this trick on lycra, works like a charm even with high stretch fabrics) 7. serge the rest of the hem.
Pro tip: sew the shoulders together then the top of the sleeve , then sew the arm all the way down threw the arm pit , past the arm pit seam and down to to the bottom of the jacket the side from wrist to hip.also hem the bottom, then the fron so your doubled hem faces downward 😉
Hi Grace! I drafted this pattern so I can give you a few tips. Try to choose a woven fabric as it will be easier to sew (and it is what the intended fabric is for this pattern. The hem facing actually is supposed to tuck under the button placket in the front corners - so you will do the hem before you topstitch the placket. You could also just skip the hem placket and do a regular hem. The fit is quite oversized (by design), so you don't have to worry much about a "perfect fit". I know you will do great!
When you named the first two sewing machines Barbara and Judy I instantly thought of A Star is born and expected you to name the third one after Lady Gaga lol
So beautiful. It helps to get the collar to lay down, if the underside is slightly' 'smaller' than the top piece. smaller the short way, especially. Sometimes you even get two patterns. Especially for heavy fabrics. If that right side corner continues to stick up, you might consider picking away your sewing and re sew it by checking the curve, and then sewing it on, maybe by hand. Does that make any sense? lol
Oh my, this is so beautiful 😍😭 I love your videos so much, you gave me a lot of inspiration and also I love your personality, you’re so fun to watch!! Sending lots of love all the way from slovenia 🥰🥰
I love that you named your machines. Mine are Little Nikki, Pearl, Rosie and Sergio (the serger). My mannequin is named Betsy! Love your videos. I'm planning panties this weekend thanks to you!
Watching It looks so nice it’s gonna look so nice because you work so hard for what you do you got your party every single day when you do something to help me from feeling proud of yourself every single day 24/
Jenna! id love to see more knitting videos, ive gotten really into knitting but idk what to make haha, id also love to see u knit a cardigan i think you would make it so fancy smanchy!! Love u
I just binged watched about 6 of your videos and I enjoy your personality ! Lol. I wish I could sew but I can’t! You should sew me one and send it to the US for me lol!
The reason why your hem facings were too short is that they are not supposed to go all the way to the edge of the front opening. They are supposed to end tucked inside the front button placket. So when you sewed the front button plackets as your first step, you should leave the bottom few inches open. Then tuck the end of the hem facing into that placket and then sew the last few inches of placket down. This will reduce the bulk in the front center corners.
You are absolutely correct! I drafted this pattern for Mood and that is exactly what was intended for the hem facing. This way, it reduces bulk and gives a clean finish.
Hi! I'm the collaborator who drafts the free Mood patterns. I'm so bummed that I didn't think to include side-seam pockets for this one, but you can easily borrow a pocket from one of the other free Mood patterns and use it for this shacket.
Nice shacket. I think the original pattern of the bottom trim is not wrong. You added a small piece to it, so it would fit over the whole length of the bottom. But the inseams of the two front parts are supposed to go full length from neckline to bottom and the bottom trim has to go under it. So the trim can be a little shorter (the width of the inseam minus 1 cm). Alternatively, but not often done with jackets, you can cut the bottom trim full width of the jacket and stich it 45 degrees angled to the front inseam.
I'm currently doing this pattern but I find their website instructions not detailed enough. I have been having difficulty with it and its taken me longer than it should to do this project. also definitely chose a fabric way too thick for it haha the collar doesn't go all the way to the end of the front panels and I don't know what to do with the top of the front flap where the buttons go. I'm not on the bottom hem yet and hoping it goes better than the collar for me 🤣 wishing mood had an instructional video because these patterns they have are great just the instructions sometimes are not the best.
Have you seen the trillium ensemble from mood fabrics? I have been dying to make it for almost a year I think, just need the motivation hahaha. But it is so freaking cute and I'll think you will like it a lot!! xx

I'm looking to make this for a 4th grader. I can probably downsize, but figured I'd ask first: Is there a smaller pattern size?
I'm planning my next sewing project (VERY much a beginner) so this video series is super inspiring! keep up the awesome work goiiiirl!
YAYY! I am soooo excited for you :)
These free pattern videos are soso helpful!! Also that flower top…. Is so Jenna, I love it
AHHHH I am so happy they are helpful because they are sooo fun to try!

The jacket came out beautifully!
Thanks for sharing your process, including the mistakes that we've all made! The finished shacket looks beautiful.

9:00 yes Jenna, I’m loving that sleeve 😂😍 I’m so in love with the final look!
This is on my 2022 sewing list! I enjoyed watching you make it!
Hopefully the fabric doesn’t shrink a second time! You have such a nice sense of construction. Love your clothes.

Watching you create is so therapeutic
This is definitely the kind of thing I'd make! I just did a project with button holes for the first time, terrifying then so satisfying!!

You are too cute and funny and very talented. Love watching your thrift hauls and sewing.
Beautiful jacket, looks great on you.

Agh you were one away from naming all of your sewing machines after my three aunts on my dads side, in birth order, who were Barbara, Judy, and Susan!
That is so beautiful, and so are you, and very talented.👏👏👏
Awesome shacket
That was really inspiring although I'm a total beginner, that was so nice, Jenna! Thank you for the video!

Turned out pretty cute 💖🙊
You are so talent ...it turned out beautiful 👍 always love watching ur videos
Omg can you please make a blanket hoodie ??? Those are so cutee !!
you can use a razor blade to cut in the button holes rather than a seam ripper
I’ve been thinking about making one of these for in between seasons so this is the perfect video!!!
Beautiful Jenna, 🥰
Brilliant looks amazing!❤️
When I get a notification that you have uploeded a video,,📸
my happy time begins 📸❣️🍊♥️🥳🧁🎊🎉🥳💖🫂❤️🍨🪄👑...🥰💕

Super cute! Loved this vid.
It looks great! I want to make one for myself!
Fabricana -- love it! It's called Fabricville here in Quebec 😅
I just binged watched about 6 of your videos and I enjoy your personality ! Lol. I wish I could sew but I can’t! You should sew me one and send it to the US for me lol!

So, I want to make this jacket too, but the sizes really confuse me, which size did you use? I‘m scared it‘s gonna turn out way too big lol
love watching your videos and recreating the things!!
You are as creative with names as I am 😂 your mannequin is Manni and my port is Porter 🤣
Love the outcome of this project 😍
I love it omg
The reason why your hem facings were too short is that they are not supposed to go all the way to the edge of the front opening. They are supposed to end tucked inside the front button placket. So when you sewed the front button plackets as your first step, you should leave the bottom few inches open. Then tuck the end of the hem facing into that placket and then sew the last few inches of placket down. This will reduce the bulk in the front center corners.
You are absolutely correct! I drafted this pattern for Mood and that is exactly what was intended for the hem facing. This way, it reduces bulk and gives a clean finish.
@@PaTTernHack yup and with a thicker fabric it's very beneficial!
Girl! U r smokin!!!😁😀😌
What size did you choose for your shacket? I just can’t decide between two
I literally thought Penelope and then you said Penelope and now I think I’m psychic
Hi Jenna, I’m so happy to have found a free pattern for the Shacket! I have a question: does it have pockets for your hands?
Hi! I'm the collaborator who drafts the free Mood patterns. I'm so bummed that I didn't think to include side-seam pockets for this one, but you can easily borrow a pocket from one of the other free Mood patterns and use it for this shacket.
The part where you though you're almost done then saw a part where you sewed something upside down. Relate much 😂
LOVE this!
Nice shacket. I think the original pattern of the bottom trim is not wrong. You added a small piece to it, so it would fit over the whole length of the bottom. But the inseams of the two front parts are supposed to go full length from neckline to bottom and the bottom trim has to go under it. Alternatively, but not often done with jackets, you can cut the bottom trim full width of the jacket and stich it 45 degrees angled to the front inseam.
Great catch, Marlene! (I drafted this pattern for Mood and you are correct)
Muchas gracias 🎉❤ desde Argentina
🚨🚨Sewing tip 🚨🚨 when you seam rip button holes put a pin at the end horizontal so that way you don’t over rip the hole! It stops the seam ripper
Sewing seems like magic to me. How. Do. You. Do. That?
love the green jumper you're wearing in the begining! did you knit it yourself? looks simmilar to the one from that course from demestika
Love this shaket Jenna but oh my days isn’t is life sucking when you have to undo and redo the work!😖 well done it looks fab
I'm currently doing this pattern but I find their website instructions not detailed enough. Omg!! Yessssss!
The projects I did in sixth form, last year of high school, for my art class i named Barbara and Penelope...
Hey x I love to saw but I don’t know if I need to wash my fabric before using it ??
Yes
Really like your jacket in 3:37 !!
Where did you bought it from??
