    I think my only “secret” tip is to think of shopping for a different season than the one you are in. Meaning, for example, I knew last summer that I needed fall and winter items like sweaters and jackets. No one else was shopping for them at that time so I was the only one browsing those sections and the shops tended to have those items priced a bit lower than they would during colder months. I scored a few items I was thrilled to take home with me.

    Was anyone else bracing themselves the whole time waiting for the obligatory “and I’m so excited to say this is sponsored by thredUP/TRR/poshmark/etc!” ?? Seems like every time I see a thrifting video lately it’s because it’s sponsored, so it was really refreshing to watch a thrifting video without that. You continue to prove you are one of the most genuine and talented creators on here, Alyssa!

    • @AlyssaBeltempo
      @AlyssaBeltempo  4 роки тому +9

      aw thank you Rebecca for the sweet comment :) I have worked with ThredUP before and would love to partner with them and other brands in the future - i can't lie! But I definitely try to keep sponsored videos to a minimum and I really enjoyed having this "conversation" type video with you - I'm so glad you liked it. Thank you for watching and the sweet comment! xx

      Alyssa Beltempo definitely nothing against working with thredUP and other brands! Sponsored content is totally fine in my book, it’s just when it overtakes a channel or is done in an inauthentic way that it starts to feel disingenuous :)

      @Doll Faced Beauty I had a rotten experience trying to deal with T.U. when I had high end things to sell. No more of them for me.

    • @grizzlybear4
      @grizzlybear4 4 роки тому +1

      @Doll Faced Beauty T.U. took a bunch of mine, then "donated" them, or something. High end, mint condition. If they were being given away, I would have much preferred our local charities. It was quite a loss.

    You hit most of my big tips...I was really happy to know how buying and wearing 2nd hand really has a positive impact on the environment. Final tip is to donate your less loved or no longer fitting items to clear space in your closet and allow someone else the pleasure of finding that thing you once found perfect!

    I absolutely LOVE thrift shopping (in Australia we call it op shopping). Over 80% of my wardrobe (including clothes, shoes, bags, scarves and belts) is second hand - either from TheRealReal or op shops. It is astonishing to me what ends up there. I have so many unique pieces that are of exceptional quality. The whole shopping experience eclipses brand new shopping plus the reward of finding something special is totally worthwhile. I could write a book about it.

    My latest thrifted purchase was a three-quarter length winter coat. I spotted it immediately and loved the style and colours, but it was in the UK size 10 section - definitely not my size. I noticed there was no size in the garment so I think somebody had just guessed. I tried it on and it fit perfectly. You are totally right about checking every section, you never know!

    I love shopping second hand! I shop with a tape measure in hand so I can quickly check the width across waist or chest (half my body measurement) to see if it’s likely to fit. Being bundled up in coats and scarves makes it difficult to measure the item against your body. I wear boots or shoes that slip on and off easily and shirts without buttons for quick try ons. I always take my gloves off and feel each garment and my hands have learned to seek out natural fibres and good quality. If I’ve not heard of a brand, I sometimes google it so I get an idea of its retail price, but looking for signs of quality is more important to me. I love going to posher areas to find the good stuff! ❤️

    I love to thrift. in the last two years I have lost about 100 pounds and had to replenish my entire wardrobe. Being a real estate agent I need to dress nice. It was difficult to find my style again and having to pay department store prices for the clothes I wanted made me sick. I go thrifting with no expectations in mind, I look for natural fibers and well made clothes, shoes. My picture is an entire thrifted outfit. Love your channel!

    Great video! Another tip, if you can, shop at thrift stores near military bases. The higher population turnover means pre-moving purges and therefore great finds from all over the country and world! Also, get your colors done and keep them with you (color cards or on your phone) when you shop. That easily eliminates items that aren't in great colors for you, so you can keep focused. I love thrift shopping too!

    • @sweetfrivolity9862

      you must be American! That's an unexpected upside to your nation being armed to the teeth as it is. Our army here in NZ lives in a cold desert, they don't have 800 bases round the world and never go anywhere interesting. About colours - my method is just to put my hand on the fabric and see how it looks - if my skin looks warm and alive, the colour suits me. Sadly for me most colours don't do this, much as I love them.

    Before this year I NEVER would have bought second hand cloths. Now I think it is a great way to go and it makes me feel like a better person less wasteful. I started because I was losing a lot of weight and dropped a few sizes so I didn’t want to spend a lot if it would only fit well for a month. Now I realize that I can buy a brand that I would never even look at because of price. Once again your channel is excellent and appreciated.

    In the past couple of weeks, I got a Moschino sweater for $28 and a Salvatore Ferragamo handbag for $25 secondhand. Thrifting isn't 'shopping' for me; I think of it as a treasure hunt: best undertaken as an adventure, sometimes without the results intended, but fun in the best way.

    Buying men's wear also helps lower the dry cleaning bill if needed. Typically costs less due to basic styling/no frills. Love over sized sweaters + men's wear section is definitely the place.
    Leather purses are my fave find since they tend to be priced the same as synthetic but show no wear. No luck with shoes yet as I only see the overly damaged ones in my hunts. Also thanks for the stats!

    I have a small hack in thrifting. I usually buy the most high-quality gourgeos pieces in the opposite season. E.G. I buy my cashmere sweaters in the summer and cool blouses and shirts in the winter. This is obviously because most people look for seasonable clothes and skip other sections, so real quality pieces are left for smarter thrifters like me:)

    So sorry that I am no where near Toronto and I am going to miss your workshop Alyssa.
    I love your approach to slow fashion. Since watching your videos, I have become even more mindful and discerning when shopping. I have always been a secondhand shopper, now I am more focused and pickier. I also don’t shop as often and make sure that I only buy if it is an item that was missing in my wardrobe, an item that I am excited to add, an item that I can style in many ways, an item that I can wear year around as I live in LA, an item that I would be happy to wear repeatedly. That eliminates most things I see.
    Bonne semaine chère Alyssa! Bisous!

    Great undergarments idea (around 5:00) !!!!! My secret tip: As far as online thrifting - - don't forget Ebay, too. Even 'ThredUp' dually lists their items there, as well as, their own proprietary site. So, one finds the widest variety and best prices here, IMO. Plus, I find the way I can sort on Ebay, is better than other online sites, I've shopped. & Most sellers will ship to Canada....

I've learned to try on and not depend on the size listed on the tag because (1) sizes aren't standard from brand to brand and (2) people have clothes tailored to their bodies (including me). I have been shopping thrift since 1974, so I use all your ideas but enjoy watching your site anyway.
    One other tip that works for me at Goodwill especially: I go the day before one of their holiday sales (Presidents Day is tomorrow here in the US). Today I went and there were 4 racks of 99c items. I have just a few items I need as I am doing a very low buy this year, but for the past year I have been looking out for a ¾ sleeve, plain white 100% cotton T-shirt. Found it, Caslon brand. I had been willing to pay much more but just never found one before today.

    Hi Alyssa, in my opinion as far as Thrifting or vintage shopping is concerned, you guys in Canada or in the US are way ahead, here in Italy it's just starting to take flight now, but still long way to go....I actually used to love doing thrifting back in the 90s. There used to be a really nice designer clothes stand at the Mercato near where I live, actually bought the dress I wore to my brother's wedding, it was a Naf Naf famous designer brand here in Europe, got lots of compliments on it. Good luck w/your workshop there in TO, I haven't been back in ages, miss it so much, hugs girl and loving your videos. Btw the only tip I can think of giving is to check for any hard to remove stains or faulty zippers.

    YES...THE REALREAL! I am a huge fan! I love the Vestiaire Collection as well as they carry more of the European brands...Acne Studios, Angela Caputi (jewelry)...but more expensive. I have consigned and purchased from the Real Real. From the consigning point of view, I can assure you that The Real Real is rigorous and examines pieces meticulously. There "very good" is like new. Pristine is with tags. Excellent is basically new/never/hardly worn without tags. Good is what happens if you have worn the item a few times. The Real Real's shipping is a bit high (lower than the Vestiaire Collection shipping, though). With the RealReal most items have a code for an additional 20% off. Chanel does not and there are others as well...but there are sales on these items. Prices are discounted 30% after a month on the website. As a consigner, I watch for that as I may recall an item. Sometimes, I'm sitting on a fence and had mixed emotions about consigning it. I also will request a higher price for an item if I believe the Real Real has it assessed too low. We negotiate. AS A BUYER...knowing how items are assessed...I have full confidence in their descriptions. The RealReal sets up their descriptions so you will not be disappointed...in other words...the item is better than described. I prefer (unless jewelry or handbag) to avoid FINAL SALES. Since, I cannot try items on, I want the option to return it if it does not fit. That is usually the only time I return items. I have also reconsigned items I have purchased if I find after a year I am not wearing them. The closets of millionaires are open to you at the Real Real....and it is the real deal!

    These are great tips. Lists really help me keep focused and ensures conscientious consumption on my part. My tip/thrift rule is that I never buy anything that cannot immediately be incorporated into my wardrobe. It helps keep my purchases thoughtful and within my personal style while refreshing what I already have. My second tip is to sign up for email lists, check out social media sites for the store, and look for coupons. I don't ever shop just because there is a sale but there are times when coupons overlap occasions when I am planning to shop for a specific item. This happened to me recently. It was a nice surprise to find the exact blazer I was looking at on an online reselling platform at a fraction of the price and then getting an additional 50% off because of an active couoon.

    I feel differently about op shopping - no list, there's no point because I want to be surprised, and the chance of finding something I've ordered up in my local op shop (which supports a food bank) is about nothing. I used to be able to afford expensive clothes plus I sewed, but op shopping is way more FUN. My method is to obey an impulse. If something attracts me - I grab it. This is good life training too. I'm a boring person and I get to broaden myself - I like men's shirts and jackets, sequins, see-through lace. At way over 60 I bought my first micro mini skirt, black denim with crystals sewn onto it, from the $1 rack, and it's great on the dance floor. I like big sizes chopped down, it is so easy to do this, and the proportions are often better for me than normal small sized clothes. My wardrobe has orphans (clothes that don't match anything else) but it usually works out well - impulse-buying ensures that it's the inner me choosing them, so somehow they are all related and go together in surprising ways. In fact I get random praise for my 'outfits'!!

    Thanks for this video, Alyssa. Great tips. One thing I would say is that while you can ask for a discount at a second hand store no one should ever negotiate at a thrift (charity) store. I would ensure that the item fits into your wardrobe seamlessly and it’s a keeper otherwise it will be making a return to the thrift store again! I

    I shop for quality brands, for colors that suit my coloring, and natural fibers. I buy classic pieces that I can easily mix and match. I buy out of season or in season. It is helpful to know when your stores will be giving discounts and sales. Bring your older neighbor along if they give a sizable discount for seniors. Make donations on the day of a big haul if they give you a discount coupon in return. My Goodwill store sells clothes with a certain color tag for $1 per item every Monday. It pays to shop early on that day. I dup when I can on-trend colors and styles if I think they are flattering on me.
    Because you are making up your own outfits, you may end up collecting a lot of pieces in the hopes they will go together. I love them all and keep them organized in my two small closets. I try to create and wear an outfit as soon as possible after purchase otherwise I forget about why I bought it.
    Altering or repurposing can be fun. I recently bought a men’s sports jacket, took off the sleeves and made an oversized waistcoat. The arm holes were big and a vintage blouse with large sleeves fit perfectly with it.
