This man is the single reason why everyone else is maidenless.
Bruh 😂
😭😭😭
May I ask what does "maidenless" mean in this game? I have seen many people talk about it at the beginning of the game but I still dont understand it.
@@hahung7404 you play as a "tarnished" which is jsut a fancy new word for the "main characters" in souls games basically, and the finger maidens serve the 2 fingers and give guidance and wisdom to them and allow them to have a seat at the roundtable hold. you start off in a closed room with a dead body in it which i assume was your maiden and when you leave the first dungeon some asshole is outside waiting for you to talk shit to you and comments how you are "maidenless" so people just turned it into a meme.
@@hahung7404 correct me if im wrong but im p sure maidens are needed for a tarnished to use runes in order to level up and get stronger which is why melina offered to play the role of maiden for us
Imagine this from Malenia's POV. You're an undefeated demigod and this naked mortal with a stick shows up. You can't land a single hit. He blocks most of your attacks and you straight up miss the rest. This would be horrifying.
And then you become a true goddess, because your rotbloom (which literally annihilated Caelid the second time it bloomed) bloomed a third time and you still can't hit him. I really hate her, but that's humiliating enough that I might feel a little pitty for her.
And then this particularly weak mortal kills you with said stick despite having the strength of a baby mouse and you being able to launch a flurry of attacks so fast it’s hard to see it coming.
Good thing she appears to be blind. 😂😂
The greater will works in mysterious ways
She really did get defeated though, had to have her broken body carried away by some soldier and on top of that destroyed and killed countless and ruined Caelid.

Would've been the same for all the bosses they had to kill just to unlock Malenia in the first place lmao.
this just requires a lot of time and memorization, very little skill, like all soulslike. Skill is a matter of improv, ideas and execution. This is barely execution when you memorized each frame of every animation of the boss. Skill would be going in blind and doing that.

I was pretty dumbfounded at this too. I don't think this was the first boss who takes multiple parries before they collapse, but they were resisting with their endurance. I've rewatched this vid multiple times and only now finally saw that he was useing bloodhound step to evade her first flurry. Now that all the pieces are there, my five day practice session will come to a epic close. Honestly.... once parries are understood, Melania is powerless.
Wow I missed the bloodhound step too! Good eye!
@Skibbity Bop damage negation doesn't matter if parrying is the goal. Buckler parries have a high window for parry
That’s what I absolutely *love* about Elden Ring compared to other games. You *need* to use a significant amount of critical thinking to actually proceed through the game. If you just *can’t* beat a boss needed to continue the game, even after 30 tries, you’re not ready. I find it super fun finding all the pieces that need to fit together in order to beat tough bosses (usually some combination of an increase in my own skill, as well as an increase in my character’s level and items)
This is also why I think it can be quite frustrating for people who are used to hack and slash-types.
It was honestly quite strange returning to God Of War and unintentionally beating it just by casually playing through the story…

I gotta say, after repeatedly watching your impeccable gameplay, I learned the parry timings for this fight and eventually won it.
So thanks for that. Keep it up. 👍
What was the sweet spot for the parry? Is it a bit before her blade hits you or just before it’s gonna hit you? I can never tell if i need to memorise her moves to learn the parry or there is something that is consistent
@@snixtysnixt the way that parry frames work in Elden Ring is that there's a bit of start-up time, then the parry window. If you get hit during the start-up frames, you don't parry the attack, you block it. If you get hit during the parry window, you parry the attack. So you don't parry instantly (like maybe you've seen in Sekiro.) You need to press the parry button a little while before the attack will land.
Depending on what weapon, shield, or weapon art you're using to parry, the start-up frames and the parry window are different in length. Generally, the lower the start-up time and the higher the parry window, the easier it is to parry with because there's more leeway if your timing is slightly off. Check out this video to see the different timings. When the character flashes white, that's the parry window. ua-cam.com/video/yX0mT_NQh7k/v-deo.html
Ongbal uses a buckler to parry most of the time, and you can see in the video I linked that the buckler has one of the largest parry frame windows available (what Ongbal does is still VERY impressive though). Small shields also have a generous parry window. Daggers, medium shields, and other weapons have smaller parry windows with longer start-up time, so it's much harder to parry with them consistently, especially if you're fighting something with fast attacks.
With Malenia, it looks like all of her parryable attacks are telegraphed pretty well, and her timing is pretty consistent, so parrying her is about just learning her moves and timings, not about having fast reflexes. Ongbal also has a video where he uses a dagger to parry her, which has a longer start-up time, so you can definitely read her moves in advance. But that's just what it looks like to me based on this video, without having fought her myself.
@@snixtysnixt The comment @bananana wrote is pretty accurate.
I just want to add a few points to that.
- Memorizing what attacks are *not* parryable (like the kick here) is important. You need to know their starting animation.
- While parrying with Buckler, look at Malenia's hands. You are parrying the *hand* not the sword. As soon as you see the hand *start to move toward you* you need to press parry.
- If you're a parry beginner like myself, either use buckler or if you want an even easier option go with Golden Parry/Carian Retaliatin Ash of War. The Golden Parry lets you put a tiny bit of distance between you and the boss and give you an easier window of parry. With Buckler you need to be very close to the boss.
- One vital thing I learned the hard way; beside timing, your *positioning* is also key in successful parries. When Malenia changes directions by quick-stepping you should also move to correct your positioning. Just move a bit, lock-on will do the job and position you right in front of her. but as soon as she stops moving and initiates the attack you should too. Otherwise you will perform a failed partial parry. Too took me a while to learn.
Good luck. Learning to parry her is one of more fun strats IMO.
How do you parry? I have tue brass shield level 8, and I have the ashes of war on the shield. I used to parry a lot on Ghost of Tsushima, I can’t seem to get it right here.
Ps5, great connection and I play on a monitor with 1ms input delay.

Im level 55. A beginner I know
This is one of the greatest achievements in gaming. The fact that you need 3 parries in a row to crit her is crazy enough. Throw in that if you miss one parry, she will kill you in the two hits that will follow your miss. Add on her insane arsenal of attacks and health pool, and boy oh boy, what an amazing fight.

@@bubbleburster2813 you're saying that like he didn't walk thru da anime slash
There are seven hits in the water fowl attack, in 3 groups, the first group has 3 hit boxes (all with audio cues). This one is best avoided by running away, if she does it when standing next to you, run away and then dodge diagonally to her right side. The second group has 2. You diagonally into her. The third (3 hitboxes) can be really hard because of how she'll manipulate your camera. It'll snap onto her part way through the third waterfowl, and you roll back. Otherwise, you can roll forward slightly before this camera change happens. Takes about 4-6 hours to learn, but you can speed it up by doing some runs where you don't hit her and just learn the dodges.

I don't think its really possible to be overlevelled with malenia.
That sounds about how I beat her. No real skill. I randomly picked Oleg the dual-wielding banished knight and found out he is really good at stun locking her. Then I just wail at her when she's distracted and turtle up for every other attack, including the murderous fowl dance. I frantically try to brute force her second phase by chugging estus and wailing on her to kill her as quickly as possible. Literally can't even see any of her attacks since I didn't try to dodge when she's blasting from above me. Never knew there was an attack where she sends her spirit at you. Like fighting a giant by smacking their leg and not being able to see 90% of their attacks. Headless chicken indeed.

What is so impressive with this fight is the consistency. I have been trying to repeat it, and one mistake ends the run. I can get to her second phase, but just one mistep and I'm back at the start. Really impressive consistent parrying my man!
I can only imagine the hours spent practicing this fight. To get to this level is to go EVEN FURTHER BEYOND!

The minutes spent downloading a parry bot you mean?
When you see a seemingly frail man in loincloth with a measly club in his hand, RUN
Managed to finally beat her myself after about 6-7 hours of trying using Dual Daggers (Black knife & Blade of Calling). I never ever could figure out how to dodge her Waterfowl Dance so I ended up just using Bloodhound Step and booking it across the room every time. I actually studied your previous video to try and learn the parries...but couldn't do that either haha. Insane gameplay as always! Looking forward to how you handle the last few bosses.
For waterfowl seems like you roll away, roll in, then backout or roll out, then go in for punish
@@JogBird probably worth noting he's using bloodhound step for the first dodge in this video.
@@JogBird Oh yeah, I've tried but my timing/spacing was always off and I ended up being the one to get punished haha.
i find it interesting how long it takes people to figure out how to dodge her combo, as someone who didnt really care for the other souls games/is basically a newcomer, it seemed pretty obvious distance is key after getting one shot by it once or twice >.
@@JunJunisKing Well, yes and no. Even when if I booked it across the room the moment I saw her winding up her Waterfowl Dance, she would still catch up to me, so for the last 1-2 slashes of it I had to bloodhound step backwards diagonally to not get clipped. It's a little more than simply keeping distance, because she covers a whole lot of distance. That paired with the fact that since I was using daggers, if I wasn't close enough to smell her breath my attacks would whiff so I had to REALLY get all up in her business as much as possible. But yeah I dunno why it took me so long either haha, I spent a lot of that time trying to be cool and parry her before I gave up and just went back to simply dodging as best as I could.
Honestly would love to watch a full game playthrough with this lvl 1 wretch just owning everything. 😁
I remember that after killing her I felt exhausted and like a god since I did it without summons or help from other players at around level 120, and I managed to do it just because I abused bloodhound step and used the normal claws with absurd levels of bleed in them.
This guy is just nuts and it reminds me of when I started helping people out with this boss like 7 days ago, i got summoned along with a naked wretch, that guy OBLITERATED the boss, the host and I just sat in the ground and saw how this mad man killed malenia without getting hit, it was excruciating.
Edit: if anyone’s wondering, this motivated me to begin my journey as a level 1 wretch, so far I’ve gotten to the yellow Godfrey, has been pretty fun ngl.
Edit2: I have 2 things to say:
1.-yay already beat Elden ring as rl1
2.-why are there so many salty people about the fact that I used bloodhound step? Lmao
I managed to bat malenia second try with just the stone of gurranq, a scythe and some flies but yeah, those naked guys are terrifying
@@thehogfather5872 honestly I liked killing her with claws and bloodhound step since it felt like fast paced gameplay, the only reason I got killed a ton of times was that bullshit attack she does in both phases, I never learned how to dodge it properly so I just spammed bloodhound step lmao.
I think it took me around 35 tries? Like 10 for killing her first phase and 25 her second, her second fase was only hard because of that one attack where she levitates in the air, summons scarlet rot skeletons as attacks and creates a small air current that soft locks you if you enter there.
The only attacks that killed me in this boss were the ones that soft locked me and deal constant damage, if that didn’t happen I could’ve easily killed her in 10 tries, it’s a tough boss but not as most people make it seem, it’s pretty fun to play against her.
@@salarmer1633 i got her second phase down to 25% first try then got snagged by her flower, i realised the cleanrot knights scythes ash of war was pretty worthless early off against her, i just spent most of the time learning all her moves.
Second try i managed to do it nearly hitless until right at the end where i got snagged right at the end by the little explosion at the end of her big flurry.
Did something similair to sister friede in ds3, did her near hitless first try.

This is one of the most masterful displays of skill I've ever seen.
4:57 I thought you couldn’t even dodge this. I was in awe seeing how flawlessly you dodged though!
You inspired me to perfect this boss fight. I hope I can do/become even a little of what you display.
This is what gives me hope in my next encounter with her. I gave up trying to do it solo after getting to her phase 2 on my own and then only getting there a handful of times after additional solo attempts. I originally planned to only use a summon to quickly get to phase 2 to practice it more, but after she was still tough, I gladly ended the fight and was just relieved not seeing her stupidly broken combo anymore. I get the tracking and the multiple phases of it, but does it really have to catch me when I am 50 feet away trying to run for my life.
Remember they're light encumbered. Rolling is faster or something. If you want to roll out of it yourself, you may not be able to unless you strip.
@@somebodyintheworld5036light rolling takes the same but goes further,so it is good for dodging moves that require good positioning, that being mostly barrages, moves with a lot of active frames and breath like attacks

I did it too, but not at rank 1, and I drank the remedies, and with that, it took me 14 hours. It was crazy. I showed it to us as a very easy thing. A really great video, and I knew its magnificence after I tried to kill her in the same way.
Seriously well done, consistently reacting to the fast swings without predicting is much harder than it looks
Radahn only managed to fight Malenia to a standstill at the cost of his sanity.

It's so captivating to watch your videos! The time you took to recover into the parry loop after 5:00 is the true mark of your skill to me. That shows that it's not just about muscle memory, you have incredible gamesense.
I have one question, if someone could help me understand it, it's greatly appreciated: when Malenia does the Waterfowl Dance, I see that you unequip the Buckler. Is this for timing reasons (e.g.: the input works as an internal metronome Ongbal uses to keep the rythm of the moveset), or is it for dodge effectiveness?
I think it's so he can use bloodhound step
@@MrMoon1303 ah, makes sense! Thank you for your answer :)
Both this and your other video explaining her Waterfowl dance were not only a great show of skill and mastery but they also helped me immensely during the fight. After 127 or 128 attempts I finally won.
@Kermit with an AKI beat the game previously and I wanted to do a SL1 play-through and beat all the bosses so I pretty much just copied their loadout.
@Kermit with an AK that depends, i killed her solo and with summons, on my first playthrough i just wanted to finish the game, i tried for about 25-30 times and she kept killing me, decided to summon mimic, killed her within the next 4-5 tries. on ng+1 i was able to solo her at lvl 170, took me like 45-50 tries the second time, almost decided to summon mimic a second time but something inside toldme, if you wanna feel like you really beat the game you must kill her solo. finally i did, bleed build, patient as fuck, looking for gaps to hit her. and it worked, plus she used the waterfowl dance like 4-5 times during the whole fight, was able to avoid completely two of them, when i heard "your strenght extraordinary" dude i went to heaven. stopped there but prolly will start a ng+2 journey to beat the shit out of her again in less attempts.
It's so satisfying seeing how you know all the proper spacing for bating and evading! Amazing work!
I beat her at level 100 on +24 i think, after she step on me for 3 days straight... im a souls veteran and im ashamed of it not only because of how long it took but also why, you see, after my first few dozens of attempts on my first day i heavily relied on Mimic Tear when all i needed to do was just learn a few extra things about Phase 2 and go full on 1v1... this for me was the hardest fight ive ever endured and not even Midir or Gael from recent memory, can even hold a candle to her... now i think shes kinda easy because i have every move engraved into my brain hahahahaha

Freakin insane!!! This man fully grasps the mechanics of this game to a mastery
As a former shinobi I've been playing a mostly parry build, especially after getting Carian Retribution ash. I still haven't fully grasped it and often end up wondering why that hit didn't get parried and just pass through the shield (hitting me and draining all my stamina), but I did use parry to great effect against Malenia and a certain endgame boss. I ultimately ended up using the Mimic Tear eventually because I was getting fatigued from playing the (frankly draining) game for two months and wanted to reach the ending within this week, but in order to keep the Mimic alive for long enough to be useful I had to get good at parrying Malenia through the first phase anyway. It was just so satisfying to parry those attacks and retaliate with a mace to the stomach.
Also: it's possible to not only survive but completely evade the insane slashes when so close to her when she leaps? What dark magic is this?
Perhaps you are aware, but notice he's using a light shield with 'Buckler Parry'. Medium shields require slightly anticipating the attack and parrying as the attack is ABOUT to come out, while light shields parry quicker and can be used more reactively without anticipating as much.
As a former shinobi, I appreciate this comment

Your skills have impressed 100k of us congrats!
Impressive. I've never been able to parry reliably, even after watching dozens of how-to videos since DS1.
Me neither. No issue with Bloodborne or Sekiro with practice. I should try the buckler shield as I think that has a larger party window. I tried parrying, but gave up quickly with the Heater shield, once I realized I needed to do it three times in a row and I couldn't handle that kind of pressure.
You can also find the golden parry ash of war at the Leyndell Capital entrance. It's supposed to have a larger parry window too.
I died precisely _102 times_ to a Crucible Knight early game just trying to get a grip on how normal parry works in ER. The conclusion I came to was that either the window was apeshit tight like 1~3 frames, or the parry windows _vary with each attack pattern._ The thing is, I still have no idea how normal parry works at all.
I saw some posts that said that instead of their weapons their *hand* positions are to be focused on, but in my experience it worked the best RIGHT BEFORE the enemy's weapon comes crashing in - the very moment of "anticipation" should I say.
That being said, Buckler's parry feels a lot more "consistent" and "believable". Every parry build I used during the playthrough had Buckler shield as a main parrying shield.
@@locomotivo4644 lunges by npc's are usually unblockable. Idk if that carries over to parry though. Yeah light shield all the way

Sekiro is easier than Elden Ring tbh. Once you learn to deflect in Sekiro, the game is trivial and the deflect window is massive compared to the parry windows in Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
@@RickyG93 with charm sekiro is easier but charmless sekiro is pretty difficult as well
