- How to remove rust. Ospho rust converter is what I am showing in this video. I had some places on the door of the 1990 Ford F350 that I thought might still have some rust and corrosion that I really couldnt get to very well, so Ospho rust killer to the rescue. I also show how the frame on my 1994 F150 has held up over the years with the use of Ospho.

I clicked on this video not knowing someone would waste even one penny or one minute on a ford, I'm out! I don't waste my time.
Think you just did by by writing your comment! 😆. Have a good day... 👍
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is hilarious. This guy probably likes chevys, that are known to have a flimsy frame and terrible everything.
My dad always told me you could hear a Chevy rust on a quiet night
😂😂😂
I've been using this for decades. I always come back 24 hours later, and either do another coat if it's bad or reactivate it with some more Ospho then wipe it with water and then air dry and DA it with 80 grit. Years ago I had to put a junkyard fender on a customer's old Ranchero. It was the only fender I could get, they didn't make them back then. It was bad surface rust from the car burning down then being scrapped. I completely stripped and Ospho'd the fender then went over it with 80 grit, then etching primer and painted the car. I was kind of worried about that fender though. I still see the Ranchero around to this day and the fender looks fine. That really sold me on that stuff. That was a nasty fender when I got it. I use it all the time but I do neutralize it with another coat of Ospho then immediately a water wipe down. I won't paint right onto Ospho residue.
Yes. So many don't do this and say this don't work. It does if you follow directions. Says oil based paint only. Wipe with mineral spirits. So if not using oil based reapply, let set for a few, wash off with scotchbrite and lots of water. Doing it for decades just fine. Ppl don't follow directions. Why we have a warning label on ass cream for idiots who try to eat it!!
Do the water wipe down after the second coat is BEFORE the ospho dries ???
@@MrBluoct 24 hours after the first coat, re apply. Then while it's still wet, totally wash it off with water to neutralize it. Dry it then sand it. I usually then spray with PPG DP 90

Greetings from Northern Vermont! Been using Ospho for years and it does work great. Not to be off topic, but most of that rust could have been prevented with oil spray rustproofing. I have been oil spraying my vehicles since the 1990's up here in Vermont and my 1997 K1500 suburban still looks good with litter rust on the frame and body. There are many great oil petroleum based products on the market, but , ATF, Motor Oil, Bar & Chain oil etc all do fabulous job. Spray any of these oils INTO enclose box sections, rockers, doors, pinch welds ...all enclosed sheet metal areas. For the OUTER Frame and suspension sections that are exposed, heat bar and chain oil in an electric crock pot, add some WAX and apply it with a 3M Rocker Schutz type gun at 40 -80 PSI.. Best time to apply the oils is Spring , because the warmer weather expands the metal and allows the oil toe creep, wick and penetrate. It's most important to soak all the inner enclosed sheet metal areas with thin oils like ATF, Motor Oil, B&C oil etc.. Good Luck!!
Here's my Paps recipe, 1qrt of Any oil, trans fluid and 1 tune of grease and 1 or 2 wax toilet gaskets. Melt in a old pan and mix. I use old or used oils, fluids, hydraulic etc. So only pay 2 bucks for no name grease, and same for wax gasket. Lasts for years.

I'm not a FORD guy at all but I must say that is a good looking truck the color's fit it perfect
Years ago, I used a product called Naval Jelly. Got it from the auto parts store and every fall season before I managed to buy a topper for the truck bed, I would rough sand, paint the jelly on the inside of the truck bed, and then primer it to help keep the rust down.
Im 65, and when I was a kid ,my dad used naval jelly! Its ,I believe a phosphoric acid in a gel form.
If you get Ospho on your concrete, it will etch it, so make sure to dilute any spills or neutralize with baking soda.
It definitely will. It won't just etch it, it will eat off the topping and leave craters ! Kill it IMMEDIATELY WITH water and if you have the Baking Soda that is a great idea.
What I'm facing is after applying Ospho, it was rained on shortly thereafter and all of it turned to a chalky white powder. It is in places I can't possibly scrape or wire brush away, so I am just applying another coat over the powder and have the piece of the tractor (battery box) under a canopy. Anybody have any ideas on treating it better please let me know.
It will eat right through a concrete floor if it isn't neutralized.
@Digitalsharecropper I never remotely had that issue. But my concrete floor was hand mixed and poured from way back in the day. Maybe different than what you get these days.... I dunno.
always looking for new better rust converter will have to give this stuff a try
Hey Jon,
The F-150 frame looks like it about new. Stuff really seems to work great. It make one think, why doesn’t the auto manufacturers just make the frames rust resistant. We can do it but there doesn’t seem to be a necessity from them. Make the doors, tailgate, wheel wells all rust resistant. Years ago people said it would put the auto shops out of business. Didn’t really buy that. Now it’s all panel replacement. Oh well, really good job on that.
And another beautiful day there in Central Iowa! If you are are in Central Iowa.

you had old land rovers made of allumium they never rust.
Things are made not to last. Now its even thinner gauge metals (rust thru quicker), plastic shit everywhere. They can easily make things with long lasting materials but they wont sell nearly as many cars every10 years! Just like Nickolai Tesla, in the early 1900s discovered free energy taken from the air! His friend at the time ran his own farm from it! Now do you know why they hide shit from us. We wouldnt rely on oil, coal mining, nuclear power plants, etc!! How do you use it if you have to put body filler on the spot do you put it on with out sanding it are do you sand it off then put filler
@@paulwelch5570 if you can sand it SAND IT... if its inside where you can't get at it do your best :) Note your only going to slow the rust down... Someday it will need cut out or replaced :)
Used it for over 20 yrs & still like it.
Using this stuff on the frame for my dent side. So far it seems to be doing the job!
I just put some OSPHO by SKYCO and put some on my ATV rims tonight.---- 12-10-21! It's hard to get a dual action sander in those hard to reach places. I'll let you know how it went for me. Thank you for the video and showing that part you did in 2013-2014. Seems like its holding up.
FYI: I've used Ospho and rust eater for years. ALWAYS degrease the surfaces before treating with it. The oil from your hands/skin can neutralize the product. If you spray it on a oily surface, it will bubble up like hydrogen peroxide. The only gripe I have is the clean-up before priming.
blow off all dust and apply Ospho. Let dry 24 hours. If the metal is a galvanized trailer, just wire brush off the Ospho residue and hit it with Cold Galvanize spray paint as your primer. If standard metal, you must neutralize the Ospho
NOOOOOOOO!! flash backs of needle gun. Anyone Navy will cringe at the sight of that tool! LOL

Exactly what I wanted to see. Loved the album! Thanks.
Thanks, good video. You answered my question as to whether Rustoleum spray paint would hold up. I have an 86 E350 barn find I am restoring.
That needle scaler from HF is one of the few good air tools they sell. I just had a HF air drill break at the trigger casting, very little use, can't be fixed.
Their impact sockets are good... I know not an air tool in itself, but I have yet to break one.
@@TheFoxShop those bubbles on your door are easy too get rid of with a light too medium sanding and then another coat of Ospro! Another product I highly recommend is Rust Cutter it's a bit thicker than Ospro but sticks nicely! With that being said both Ospro and Rust Cutter are the 👑 kings 👑 in my opinion!
Looks like my Dads truck. His is a 1995 F-150. Same color and wheels. Thank s for the video.
Well this did it…I’m in 😊
Welding up a cab corner, used some rust mort today, sounds like ill use rustolium then on the inside, what ive been trying to find out, so many different opinions on it, has a little surface rust i wanted to treat inside. Adding an access hole so i can wax it or oil it through the rocker after also, its a 14 150. Rest is rock solid, brake light or slider must of leaked.
I didn't have any luck with ospho , Rust came back a few months after even though I painted the areas with 2 k epoxy
Used to have same problem with epoxy primer. The dried Ospho film prevents adhesion. Solution: Apply Ospho and let it react and dry. Then, apply another coat of ospho and rinse it off while it's still wet...a little scrubbing helps. This is the method Southern Polyurethanes recommends, and it works.
Gotta read the label. Says Oil based paint, wipe with mineral spirits, epoxy gotta rewet, let set 3 min, wash and scotchbrite, then non oil based paint. Why they don't give instructions using other than oil based IDK. On SPI forum The chemist says how to use and why they stopped telling ppl cause they won't follow directions and blame the primer or paint.
I'm fixing up my 14 foot utility trailer it has been sanded down before just had no time to do anything else what should I do step by step using the ospho
Zep® Acidic Toilet Bowl Cleaner - 128 oz. $11.98 at Menard's. Works in 30 minutes for most parts, over night for very heavy rust.

We in The Great Industrial Northeast are supposed to get 6"-10" Monday/Tuesday 2/15 & 2/16. That's fine, it only took three days for 27" of snow to melt back in December 2020.

Can I use this under body filler if I sand and clean?

Thanks for the real world review of Ospho and how to use it. Have you used it on very small rock chips?
best way to use ospho is to spray its on and use steel wool with it works alot better that way.thanks
- nick
ok so the next step??? after wiping it off and letting it dry , do you rinse with water??? or just directly start painting once its dry??
I painted right over the top of it... But seems to depend who you ask according to comments
It says if using oil based ok if not you rewet with ospho, let set 3 min, wash off with water and scotch Brite. If not it'll not adhere.
Ospho direction doesn't mean it works for all paints. Ospho converts rust to Iron phosphate. But your paint may not like that acidic environment. For example painting epoxy primer over ospho means you are screwed big time. always the best case is to neutralize Ospho. Meaning once dryed, apply ospho again wait a few mins and rinse it with water and immediately dry it.
@@borna430 That's what I do except for the scrubbing with scuff pad, not for sanding or whatever but more for complete acid removal. Cause ein the car game that's the first step, spraying epoxy to seal, do body work, sealer can't with epoxy, coat with urethane primer then base and clear. But that's on a 40k restoration. I just do epoxy then base coat. I watched a video of a test of ospho and the tester said it didn't work well and then that's where this got started for me. I tried to tell him that using on a diff on a truck is a ok test if it was cleaned and prepped right. I've used it for years and if it's a clean dirt, oil, silicone etc free surface and not get rid of all the rust, cause that's the point is to convert it not sand it all off, it works just about the best I've seen in 20 years. Some of the evapo rust is good for small parts and time to soak but for a frame etc hard to do that. There's way to thicken up the ospho and make it stick. That's my only complaint. Like naval jelly buy way stronger concentration of phosphoric acid. I've never tried tannic acid but seems to work well from videos. Hard to tell cause we don't see the entire process, just what the content creator wants to show. Thank you for your time. Have a great week.
Should you sand it down again after spraying it or is it ok to just spray primer over it without sanding ?
You should use mineral spirits and a clean rag to wipe off the white powdery stuff, primer and paint. Although I have painted directly over the Ospho with good results.
I buy the concrete and metal prep from home depot. Gallon for 15 bucks it's the same stuff.
What's it called
@@BraddaMarlon klean strip concrete &metal prep.
In hoping this product saves my frame.
Does Klean Strip Concrete & Metal Prep leave behind some latex or acrylic coating? Is there a rust converter that only uses acid? Seems like some latex coating will negate the ability to use a primer. Ultimately, you're limited to the adhesion of that latex or acrylic.
Use oil based paint right over it
🫡
The manufacturer Kleen-Strip claims it doesn't have any latex-like material . Some other conversion primers do have a latex-like material, and the one I used looked like milk. Different than the greenish translucent liquid of the Kleen-strip brand. Conceening the Kleen-Strip, after painting on the converter and waiting overnight, I use a scuff pad to wash off any residue. This ensures only well-bonded phosphate is left. Then let that dry and oil-based enamel over that ( or oil-based primer ). Works very well and never peels....been 20 years and it's perfect.
I would spray or paint some on the inside of the door inside the bottom.

Thank you! Great review!
this is the kinda thing that got people burned at the stake back in the day
Real
klean strip concrete and metal prep and etch , should be the same exact thing if u check sheet and its only 17.97 $ at home depot
May have to try that 👍
@@TheFoxShop Try a comparison test, I got it while waiting for my Ospho to arrive, they seem very similar but the Kleen Strip concrete and metal prep is much cheaper and right there
No it's not the exact same thing the Ospho is a much better product. But the kleen strip works too as long as you don't have too much rust. I'm sure we all know what the best one is....it's Corroseal
Thanks for the video. I never heard of it. Let me make sure I understood, can you wipe and then apply body filler directly over that and then prime and paint?
It acts like a etch primer so if its clean after you spray it, it can be painted directly over but body filler needs scratches underneath
I need to apply body filler, is that ok to use over it? Do I sand with 80 grit?
I do not have the answer to that... I wouldn't. And if going to sand it down clean to bare metal, there is no point I don't think
Just got this truck that desperetly needs rust tretment.woild you recomend spraying it on all the parts, like break lines and things like that?
Well, seems a lot of opinions on social media 😂... But I did. Sprayed everything!! No problems yet. Been what... 6-7 years now?
Buy the Kleen Strip brand version at a fraction of the price...
Just remember if you do not neutralize it it will haunt you for ever in your top coats.
Neutralize how? I'm considering using it (Ospho) myself.
@@CinHalCedHerChance When your ready to work the metal again 80 grit the whole surface then acetone it all/ continue with Tamco 5300 series DTM primers and products solvents. Call them they are great.

I think it has thermal requirements for chemical reaction to happen
So this product encapsulates the rust ?
No it converts the rust to an inert surface that can be painted
Phosphoric Acid 💣
My rocker panels are rusted out will this stuff work for just killing rust?
My opinion, yes, but sure others will disagree lol
I hate Ospho! Used it on fence posts..everywhere I used it, the black oil based paint began disintegrating in a few months. Posts without Ospho still Look great after many years. And, yes I followed the directions. I will never ruin any metal item with that junk again, and I do paint a lot of metal ! It’s too expensive to not work as expected
Hmm.. frame on my truck still looks brand new after using it. Wonder what happened.
That seems like a very similar product to SEM rust mort. I have had good success with the rust mort. Really don't want to get that stuff on you, it burns badly lol.
Could be..possibly the same main ingredient 👌
I watched the whole video while my wife and son were bothering me. I see so many different opinions I just need one. I have a 89 bronco I’m trying to make last as long as possible. After you apply ospho do you wash it off after? So you just paint straight on it, do you wipe it with something? Everyone says different things, that’s the problem with the internet. I just need 1 person to tell me what they think is right.
Rust converter doesn’t stop future rust, unless you can coat / paint to keep air and water off the metal.

Yes but you can't get into the microscopic pits and it will rust again unless you grind down all the metal too. Use right way and save all that work and time.
You can't get inside A B and C pillars either. I hate to replace a quarter panel because of surface rust inside a solid piece.

I got some toilet bowl cleaner that says it has phosphoric acid and citric acid and I'm using in on a bbq restoration I'm doing but I just got it so we'll see
does it inhibit or dissolve???
Neither. It converts the iron-oxide to iron-phosphate, which is one heck-of-a primer. Imagine a primer that doesn't just coat (like regular primer) but a primer that bonds on a molecular level. I made a mistake once on a trailer while painting and thought I'd just sandblast it off. BIG MISTAKE. I thought I'd NEVER get it all off!
Hey I don’t think you apply paint right after I think you need to neutralize it prior to painting.
It says on the bottle not to mist it. You're supposed to use a brush I believe
Where you been buddy. I have full blown upgrades going on. Miss you.
What primer did you use over top of the Ospho? I'm working on some doors and a deck lid with some rust pits on them just like yours and I really don't want to blast but I've read Ospho can cause adhesion issues with primers.
I just really used it on the frame of my truck..used rustoluem rusty metal primer.. Several coats, then rustoluem black paint.. still looks great!! But for body panels.. Not sure to be honest. Never done that.
Dp 90 is one of the best primer if you are looking for quality of being rust resistant but it's really expensive
After applying in a badly scaling battery box on a tractor, I was not able to cover it up and it was rained on several times. Came back a couple weeks later to find awful white powder build up instead of black hardened coating ready to be painted.
May be a mistake but today 12-2-22 I have reapplied another coating of OSPHO right over the power. This time the tractor is under a covered shed. It will be damp during rains but will not likely get the waterfall itself. So, we'll see what happens. I hate rust and it has to go. I hate this white chalky powder just as bad. Somebody did not take care of preventive maintenance on this tractor and I have to try to save it.
