5 Mbps download and 0.5 Mbps. Last year they buried fiber optic cable up the valley where I live but they didn’t run the fiber optic to everyone’s house. They ran the fiber optic to a distribution box where the telephone lines are located and then ran it over the phone lines. I had DSL before this and this is much better now. I know that speed sounds slow but I can watch UA-cam videos and HULU with no buffering. It does take hours to upload a video, and I usually only have my videos at 1080p. There are faster speeds available but so far, I’m satisfied with what I have.

Have had fiber since 2010 (right after I left for college lol) but only dial-up before then. Dakota Central has been an excellent provider for our area, can't complain... they really setup the whole rural network to get everyone internet. 55 mb/s down, 5 mb/s up, 5 ms latency to my provider.
It's megabits (Mbps) for internet speeds, not megabytes (MBps). I think generally it is 8 Mbps for 1 megabyte roughly, pending on other factors. Latency is the biggest thing for gaming... the lower the better. 45 ms isn't bad for being complete wifi/satellite connections.

  • @RyanGrissett
    @RyanGrissett 2 роки тому +15

8 Mbps (megabits per second) = 1 MBps (megabytes per second)
This is an important distinction to make in order to understand whether you are getting the download speeds you are expecting. Sometimes customers think they are getting ripped off because different software will display your download speed with two different metrics.

It looks like a couple of folks have briefly touched on this, but as a former IT guy, I feel compelled to hang a +1 on the BITS vs. BYTES thing. In short: Small "b" = "bits", capital "B" = "Bytes". There are eight (8) bits in each Byte, so you're looking at a factor-of-eight difference in bandwidth there. The "M" (for "Mega", of course) means the same in both cases; roughly a million of each unit.
So it looked like you're averaging around 50 Mbps, or 50 MegaBITS per second. Divide that by 8 to get your MegaBYTES per second, so around six-and-change, six-and-a-quarter. You also mentioned getting up around 120 Mbps download speed. Divide by 8; call it 15 MegaBYTES per second or so.
The reason it matters so much is because file sizes, like videos, are measured in BYTES, not BITS. So a ten GigaBYTE (10GB) 4K video file is still going to take a small chunk of time to upload, even at StarLink speeds. 10GB (GigaBYTES) = 10,000MB (MegaBYTES). Divide that 10,000 by 15 and you get roughly 667 seconds, or just over 11 minutes, assuming no hiccups, at 120 Mbps (15 MBps). Probably nowhere near what your sister can manage, but easily fast enough to run a few times a week, even in the busy season. Just don't expect to be able to do a lot of gaming while you're uploading.
I can only assume ISPs keep using BITS per second versus BYTES per second as a bandwidth measurement because that way they can trumpet bigger raw numbers, so they all SOUND faster. Like a car company telling you your new Yugo has a top speed of, say, 264,000 feet per hour.
Ordinarily, I'd never wax this pedantic on a comments section, but I think you deserve all the data you need to accurately calculate your ability to upload video since I'm also thinking the revenue from your Internet activity is a welcome addition to you and your family's farm operations. Imagine being off by a factor of eight when calculating crop yields / prices, seed / chemical / feed purchases, etc. And you've gone out of your way to spend a couple of videos a year talking about numbers for those of us whose farm knowledge started at virtually zero until we stumbled upon How Farms Work, for instance. It's been very enjoyably educational, and I hope this helps you a little bit in return.
Alright, that's plenty out of me. Glad to hear StarLink is all you hoped for and more. Thanks for your content, and bumper yields to you and yours this coming season.

Just a small correction; Mb/sec and MB/sec are 2 different things. Many of us are used to thinking in MegaBytes a second, but that's not what Mb/sec mean (stands for mega/bits, or 1/8 of a MegaByte MB). So a speed test of 68 Mb/sec is 68 megabits a second, divide by 8, you get about 8 MegaBytes a second. Always remember the conversion of 8 to 1

yah I wondered if he could put it on the roof or the top of one of the sides of the house or something to get it higher, and that is a good point, if you use the wifi in the starlink router you shouldn't put it behind a tv, cause the tv will hurt your wifi reception when you turn it on, but I understand that's probly the closest place, but if you really want to get good wifi, put it on the ceiling or right below the ceiling, a LOT less things to block the reception

Good to know! When my folks moved here to the Shiner farm in 2013, they couldn't get even dial-up, had to settle for Hughes net... what garbage! Their speed and service was pathetic, and VERY expensive! They finally dumped it about 6-7 years ago when GVEC (the local electric cooperative which basically does the phone and internet out here too-- course we don't do landline phones anymore, haven't for decades) came out with some service where they came out and installed a 10-15 foot pole on the side of the house with a dish pointing at one of their towers, some sort of repeater based system. It worked pretty good, but not particularly fast... still LIGHTNING fast compared to the stupid Hughes net! Then about six months ago, I heard some ruckus in the yard and found the utility guys out there installing a wire on the pole. Talked to them a bit turns out they were running fiber out-- gonna replace all the dishes/repeater system. Got fiber now and it's usually pretty good. Uploads actually faster than downloads now most of the time.
Funny thing is, my BIL has fiber from his phone company (RTC) in northern Indiana, but his sucks for speed. BUT it was early fiber and I think whatever connects it to the house that is the problem. Course his phone service (ATT) absolutely sucks-- he's had a "booster" in the basement but it will only service five phones, and I'm one of them (but the kids aren't, since I'm up there for harvest and planting a lot they put me on it) and it helped a LOT, but now ATT is getting rid of it because it's 3G tech and won't work with the 5G stuff they're putting out now, so who knows if he'll even have any phone signal out there anymore. Before they got the booster, I had to go sit in the shed on the tongue of the manure spreader to get a signal to make a cell phone call LOL:) Later! OL J R :)

I had an old tv aerial on the roof, we didn’t use anymore, so it came down, and I mounted the StarLink dish to what was the roof mounting for the aerial. The cable was just long enough for the installation. The performance is great relative to the old satellite based system and slightly cheaper, even after StarLink raised the monthly service price. I would not go back to the old internet, even if they lowered the price to half.

My brother put the 5610 Ford in low gear idling, we dug a hole near the well pad and dropped the subsoiler in it, and then he took off at a walking pace, while I walked alongside unrolling the tubing and guiding it down into the boot, the poly tubing sliding down between the plates and rolling under the idler pulley into the ground. Worked great! Later! OL J R :)

The big dishes were great. You never lost signal to weather like you do with the little ones. We got our big dish back in the 80's. We had tons of channels including all the movie channels like HBO & Cinemax. I think we had 10 different movie channels back then. The best part was that it was all free. For several years we never paid a penny for satellite tv. Then when we had to start paying the highest we paid was $35 a month. I now pay $145 a month for satellite. I pay about $42 a month for 30 mbps.

The roof looks great Ryan. We have a Mennonite family near us that manufactures metal roofing in their plant in Estacada,Oregon. I used their materials when I rebuilt my carport. I will be hiring them when I redo my house roof in a few years. I am a little concerned about noise with our rainy season but I will take the chance.

The noise factor will depend on how installed.
Pole barn situation with non insulated metal panels. The path of the sound isn’t suppressed. Basically is a drum skin being played by tiny raindrops.
House / building. The you should have roof sheathing and other insulation that will suppress this affect.
I will try to get back with link to some resources for you to learn what is needed

Get the thermal barrier at the same time... it'll raise the cost BUT you'll more than make up for it in power bill savings and it'll quiet the metal roof right down in rainstorms... Later! OL J R :)

Fun fact that took me 10 years to learn. Internet speeds are usually listed in Mbps which is mega bits. Files are in MB which is mega bytes and those are not the same thing. I think there are 6 bits in a byte or something. So I get 300 Mbps download which works out to about 37 MBps download, which is actually how it should be. I think at least I might have that the wrong way around. To be clear this helps not at all and I'm sure you weren't getting what you paid for because I know that was pretty common growing up on the farm. But yeah I thought I was being cheated for years when I wasn't
Edit: 8 bits in a byte.

I'm getting 150MBs down and 40MBs up on my Starlink that I installed about a month ago. I'm actually being held back on some speed because of the wireless connection and I've order the ethernet connector for hardwire connection.

I do not have my starlink dish yet. If you wonder why I am anticipating receiving my dish next month, centurylink states I can get ‘up to’ 10Mbps. That means somewhere between 0 and 10 if you interpret it like I do. My download speed is a blistering 0.4Mbps on a good day. Upload speed running about half that. My water faucet drips faster than my internet. But I plan to cut that cord next month.

Sir if you have a old single point plow or one of your local farmers have one you can use it to dig the trench for the cable . Quick to dig with tractor and easy to cover up with the JCB .

When the put a new wire in to my brother's house recently, they just used a spade to cut through the lawn, wobbled it back and forth to open a trench, and shoved the wire down in it, then another guy walked along behind stomping it closed again LOL:) Later! OL J R :)

If, from the top of your grain bin see your sisters you could use something like a Ubiquiti Airfibre link. Pair of dishes. Then after the first purchase you do not pay any rental. Then you use your sisters internet link.

Ryan Grissett is correct. There are 8 bits in 1 Byte. 8Mb/s = 1MB/s. Megabit is different than a MegaByte. Megabit is the data speed... MegaByte is the actual data being transferred.

We've been using our mobile Hotspot from T-Mobile and it was SLOW, like downloading games at .80 kbps/second slow. When I hear starlink was coming i freaked out. Now our signal beats the local fiber, its stupid fast. Definitely recommend if you wanna pay for it
