In the Far East, they have a lot of cultural intricacies that take a long time to learn. Realistically, his girlfriend is not going to remember every single detailed thing he needs to know. For her, it is all second-nature. She grew up with those customs. He didn't. It's not his fault.

On a real Chinese home dinner table, you won't find soy sauce sitting next to the dishes. Soy sauce (vinegar, and other sauces/seasoning/spices) belong to the kitchen, unless you are serving something that needs dipping, like Jiao Zi, Chun Juan, etc.

    • @Tran-ll2it

I think even White Americans who have lived here for some generations or longer would know that putting sauce all over the main dish is rude as you don't know if everybody else wants the sauce on there, because the main dish is for everybody to share. If you pour ketchup all over the main dish of let's say roast beef for a family dinner that could be seen as rude if you didn't even ask everybody either.

    1) don't drink so much at another person's house
    2) don't take tons of food until everyone has had some
    3) don't brag you can do something, 'cause you'll embarrass yourself if you can't do it
    4) and last, DON'T PUT condiments on to the serving dish! Put it on your own plate!
Fun Fact: In the book the dinner is for Waverly's father's belated birthday, but in the movie it is her mom's b-day dinner.

As a 10 year old Korean growing up right there in the Bay Area, two things:
    1) The man's reaction at 2:28 was forever embedded.
    2) Even then, I refused to believe that it was 100% purely a cultural issue, especially re the soy sauce. The guy was either an ass or a dufus, if not both. He had a dish in front of him. Do it on your own portion and don't assume everyone's taste buds are the same. Personally, the rectal cancer line made more sense when I looked at it like this. Mothers ofc upset about the cultural ignorance, but their sense of who is an ass isn't dull. Oh well, didn't they end up together nonetheless?

      Re: JumbaFan
Rich did not know the custom that he was supposed to contradict the host when she criticized her own dish.
Westerners are used to being served individual dishes at a group dinner. They are generally not experienced in communal dishes. Didn't you see G.I.Jane? It wasn't considered "rude" when those Navy SEAL recruits pigged out at chow time.
My Indonesian cousins and I were guests at a friend's house once. When she offered us all something to drink, I was the only one who accepted. Everyone else else laughed, because I did not know that I was supposed to politely decline the host's offer.
When a relative of my Korean college roommate called, he was not there to take the call, so I offered to take a message for him. She would not leave a message. That was because Orientals do not want to impose.
There are a gazillion little cultural intricacies that you will not know unless you grow up in the Far East.

      @perfectsplit5515 8 років тому

Shulicake American manners are different than Chinese manners. When I visited my Indonesian cousins, we went to visit a friend of the family. She asked us if we wanted something to drink. I said, "Yes, I'd like a Sprite, please." I was unaware that when the host offers a drink to the guest, the guest is supposed to politely decline. On another occasion, my cousins and I were dining at a restaurant when a friend of theirs was being introduced to us. I told her I was from America. Later on, my cousin Nancy told me it was rude for me to point out that I was American to a stranger, because in their eyes it was "bragging". On another occasion, I was at a party with my cousins and our grandmother (my maternal grandmother). When I was ready to leave, I left. The fact that I failed to say "goodbye" to our grandmother before leaving was offensive to them.
Only someone who grows up in the East will know all these little intricacies.
On another occasion, my cousins and I were discussing the movie "Romeo is Bleeding" with Jet Li and Aliya. Guess what? They had no aversion to using the N-word. Wouldn't that be offensive to you as an American?

Different cultures do things differently. This is why everybody hates Americans. You guys want the whole world to do things your way.

thekingofmoney2000 These scenes happen all the time with interracial relationships. The mother clearly does not like Richard because he is not Chinese.Just looking at her eyes upon meeting him makes me squirm!

If anything he should’ve just taken cues from those around him since he had no real knowledge of the culture & their proprieties. And he just had bad manners

It's true he's completely insensitive and ignorant, but... "There were A FEW things I forgot to mention"? Well, then, what did she tell him? She seems to have left out all that was relevant... and then didn't try to help him at all.
Plus, that narration is textbook overacting.

It's not exaggerated. The host should be humble and self-deprecating, not boastful. If the mother who prepared the dish were to say, "This is my best dish", it would be considered boasting. So the host should be humble by saying something along the lines of "Well, I couldn't get all the necessary ingredients, so this is what I came up with." Then the guests will taste the dish and proclaim, "Oh, you're mistaken! This dish is so perfect!"

Have you ever live in China for long enough? Because this is the truth. Not exaggerated. Standard Chinese customs.

I know a Chinese school teacher who is also married to a Chinese man. She says that this movie is quite accurate and real life is actually worse as far as domineering Chinese mother in laws.
