    thanks to everyone for pointing out that Vuk Karadzic didn't invent the cyrillic alphabet-he only simplified the spelling problems. Silly me.. I did know that but it was too late to correct it!!

    Well done Sir, a relaxed easy going and yet nugget-filled introduction to Belgrade for beginners. Worth watching if only for the lame jokes ...

    • @Joolzguides
      @Joolzguides  5 років тому +1

      Thanks. Yes, I need to correct a couple of things but it's not really a history lesson. I guess it's just to get a general feel of the place. Is that Lord Byron on your profile picture?

    • @leestokes504
      @leestokes504 5 років тому

      I'm all in favour of making travel spots fun, interesting and exciting in these days of instant social media gratification.
      Your stuff is definitely fun to watch and it epitomises the easy going and politely curious attitude of the decent Englishman abroad (as opposed to the Brit who has difficulty in spelling his own name and has only two things on his mind when going abroad).
      I would definitely recommend folk to watch your stuff before going anywhere (and even to watch it if they are not planning a trip, just for the fun of it).
      My pedantry comes from a long Anglo-Scottish tradition of being fluent in Latin and Greek and knowing more about Herodotus, Xenophon and Tacitus than Burns, Coleridge and Lawrence.
      So in the tradition of that incredible traveller and classicist (and romantic and democrat etc) Lord Byron, please note that I'll be watching and recommending your stuff not just for the introduction they give to a location but also for the fun bits and even ... the jokes!
      Cheers, thanks and bests
      P.S. Yes, it is Lord Byron, a hero still in Greece but virtually forgotten in the UK, where his ancestral home of Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire is being left to slowly disintegrate). Happy travels and thank you for cheering us up with good info, good wit and .... photogenic company! (the accompanying folk music is also very good)
      P.S. 2 I think you must be a history graduate or at least a history buff as who else would have picked up the irony of the statue to the Serb assassin of Archduke Ferdinand!

Once I had a the city walk's with my cousin and his wife, and I noticed that at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, all the coffee's shop and restaurant's were full, a crowd of people walking in the streets. @-T-X-M- Classic Serbs, blame it on others. Blame other countries for everything.
      Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Albania are all bad countries and Serbia is the only good one? All of them attacked Serbia in the '90s? Is that what they teach you in schools?
      A fact: The country that is fighting a war *ON THEIR OWN TERRITORY* is the defender in that war.
      Example: Germany attacking Poland -> it was fought on the territory of Poland.
      Same for the Balkan Wars. Belgrade stayed basically intact while Sarajevo and cities of Croatia were destroyed by the Serbs.
      A defender doesn't put snipers on the hills around Sarajevo to snipe civilians.
      At the end Serbs had the least civilian casualties, while Bosniaks had the most with Croats taking the second place with a lot less casualties.
      Lmao people are making memes about the Serbs thinking the whole world is theirs.

      I got out of a speeding ticket in Belgrade MT once because another trucker clipped the cop pickup truck that had pulled me over and broke their side mirror. It was a good day for me, not so good for the other guy.

    Oh thank you Joolz for putting this up. I was a diplomat in Beograd 2001 - 2005 and LOVED it. Sveti Sava was still all concrete back then.
    Have you been at the Košutnjak? Another great area. And of course the many green markets (pijaca) where you can buy all kind of food and non-food stuff...
    Of coyrse you were at Skadarlica ulica, my favorite restaurant there was Tri Šešira... ahhh good times, fond memories of so many lovely people I met on the Balkans..
    Thanks again for bringing all this back to my memory. And SVAKA TI ČAST (my respect) for your language skills.
    Greetings from the Alpine region of Bavaria (you might consider making a video about my neck of the woods someday 😊)

    Just a little note, the statue in front of the church @03:09 is not the Emperor himself, it is a typical warrior/knight from the 14th century, the time when Dušan The Great ruled Serbian empire.
    P.S.
    This was quite enjoyable to watch. It's interesting to see my hometown from a different perspective.

    Serbia might not have sea, but it is a great country to visit, especially during winter, because the whole "beach craze" is over at that time. I think Serbia might have the most beautiful inland on the Balkans! There are so many mountains, lakes, forests and other interesting natural sights. We are also very strong with historical sights. There are so many Roman fortresses in Serbia, because Serbia was a part of the Roman empire. The historical sights everyone who visits our country should see are: Old Belgrade, Smederevo Fortress, Vinča and the city of Novi Sad. Serbia is really a "hidden gem" :)

    I'm part of Eastern Orthodox Church in U.S meet my wonderful guy who is from here. He has a few relatives from here and I told him I know he's worried about going back as he left during war here, but if we got married I would like to see where he grew up and pay my respects to his sister at least a honeymoon here. What would you recommend for a homey moon here anyways.
    My guy is strong, family oriented and unlike American men, he knows how to treat women. We might have a 14yr age difference, but he's a good man and respects women, serious in traditions, serious in religion, which I can't say same about America men who don't know the meaning of being in a relationship and taking it serious 'commitment', however Serbian men know what a relationship is about and stays loyal and true to it.
