- It’s so hard to believe that the end of the year has come so close. Brother was so adamant and insisted that we should visit our aunty in Nawalapitiya before the end of this year. Amidst the December cold weather, my aunts village in Nawalapitiya gives such a pleasant climate to be enjoyed. The thick fog wrapped in these mountain peaks is an irresistible site through out the day. The top peaks of the Kabaragala mountains always greets the clouds giving such a harmonious beauty to the eyes of the beholder. The climate in our village Dankotuwa is slightly warm and humid. In comparison, Nawalapitiya is a mountainous area that belongs to Sri Lanka’s wet and cold mountain zone. Because of this fact and the cold and the fresh climate, we always jumped at the chance of visiting my Aunt in Nawalapitiya.
As the climate in Nawalapitiya is completely different than our village because of the weather. Even the trees and the vegetation are also different in every way. I was surprised to see most of the trees, vegetation and plants which grows besides river and water ways in our village are also growing in the mountain tops in Nawalapitiya. The main reason for this luscious vegetation growth in this area may be because of the high amount of moisture in the soil. The tender shoots of a such a tree that grows here is called “Karan koku” (Golden leather fern / Acrostichum aureum). A member of the bracken fern (meewana plant), gets a very attractive and beautiful tender fresh shoots from the middle. The locals call it “karan koku” or “Bara Koku" or "Pattara Koku" and has became highly popular for making tasty curries.
Our trip to Nawalapitiya became a very enjoyable and a peaceful one. I dreamt of exploring this beautiful mountain heaven with my brother and my Aunt's daughter, feeling the icy cold rivers and water ways and soaking my feet in the river and to live and experience these blessings in that perfect present moment was a dream that I craved for. It was in one of those trips that made me pick some luscious tender shoots of this highly nutritious herbal plant. On our way home I got into the little stream and thoroughly washed the tender shoots.
To cook this highly nutritious shoots, firstly they should be blanched with hot water and salt, turmeric, and garcinia. Brother had waited impatiently for me to stir fry the Golden leather ferns just like the way I make them at home as we never get such big shoots in our village. Actually I was planning to make a sour curry out of it but he volunteered and together with our cousin sister, he made it his own favourite way, "the Hot Butter way".
Uncle also stepped in right on time to the house as we finished taking lunch. He had bought fresh green grapes just like I requested him in the morning. I mixed mandarin wedges, pomegranate seeds, roasted cashews with green grape halves and added bee honey and fresh ginger extract incorporating them to be well coated. The sun was shining well in the afternoon. But the cold breeze that blew from the faraway mountain peaks took me to another dreamy fairytale dimension as I sat down and started to enjoy my sweet and fresh dessert while staring at the Kabaragala mountain range that is clad in thick cloud cover, showing off a rare breathtaking gift of the Mother Nature!
Love you All!

I'm from America. They say we're the land of the free. That's so not true. You are living the really freedom life. Natural resources, abundance of the Lord's grace, family is important in other countries. Americans are greedy, and not of God ANYMORE 😭. It's because of the rythm of earth. And how can you take from the earth without replacing what you take. Your culture is unity and fresh air, and water. I appreciate your life, wish the world could realize what is happening around the world 🌎. Thanks for sharing this little bit of heaven with me. I needed it 🙏
It was a great pleasure to read your thoughts as they are playing such a role in my everyday motivation. Thanks my dear ❤️❤️💜️
I believe that precision in cooking is not about who can construct the most meticulously perfect recipe, but who can master their skill and techniques so well that they can apply them to more or less anything with great results. Love from Korea🇰🇷💕
That is also the same principle followed in Indian subcontinent. 🙏

We call it 'pakpako' here in Ilocos, Philippines They are found mostly on near the wet area like pond or river but are smaller than in your country.
Those are different ones. We also have them in our North East India.
In northeast India Assam we says dhikia and I'm Nepali We says nigrow
Same like here in Mindanao Philippines we call it pako pako

My parents came to Australia from India to visit us and stuck here due to this Pandemic. My mom found your videos when UA-cam recommended your videos, more than a year ago and now she never misses to watch any video of yours. She loves it. She adores you like a daughter. We tease her asking do you want us to buy a ticket to SriLanka as soon as possible. And now I am addicted too. 👍💐😍

Here in Alaska we have a fern that looks almost like that but much smaller. It's called the fiddlehead fern and it tastes great sauteed in butter and garlic.
Alaska..Welcome from Sri Lanka
I'm in Texas have never seen them down here. Wonder if they are in the asparagus family
@@cherilynnkeenright6699 They belong to edible fern family ,asparagus is totally different species
En centro América en Colombia también se llama helecho no sabia que se podía comer
We have them here in Vancouver too. Have to be careful how much we harvest, because they’re young plants and we need to let them grow, and not kill the vegetation fully.
I love all your episodes. Whenever I feel tired or sick, just watching your vlogs inspires and relaxes me. I like everything - including your nice relationship with your only brother, who happens to be a good cook too. How I wish to see you in person and taste your dishes and desserts. I always dream of your cozy relaxing home and the entire place where you live - your garden, your abundant farm...

Beautiful movie. Love the cloth Mali is wearing, with the elephants on the bottom.
Tempat tinggalmu sangat indah...
Tumbuhan ini hidup dibeberapa daerah di tempatku tapi aku sama sekali tidak tahu kalau ternyata tumbuhan ini bisa diolah jadi makanan... nice... 👍
In the Philippines our version of that tender
wild fern shoots called fiddleheads are bright green in color. Your purple version is simply beautiful . I might use it first as a floral arrangement before cooking it. Then I'll tell my guests , let me prepare dinner , pick some up from the vase to take to the kitchen.
ADDENDUM:
Thank you for the recipe ideas. Curry and
crispy wild fern heads? Must be delicious. Your brother is adept in the kitchen too.
We have lots of this wild spiral but we didn't eat thinking its poisonous.... Its amazing to watch how you guys cook and eat❤❤
Same in our place in the Philippines...we don't eat that kind/variety of fern coz it's poisonous. And I didn't see these guys actually putting those ferns in their mouths especially the 2 young girls.....I just saw the young man put some in his plate and he tried to eat one but the cam was cut right away.... because of that, sorry to say that I am not still convinced that it's edible. I think they just picked those ferns and cooked it for vlogging purposes.

Read the description. It's edible Shri Lankan called this Karan koku and they make recipes. It's also called Golden leather fern and acrostichum aureum. This one is different from fiddlehead but probably edible why would she make recipes if it's not edible and mislead her viewers.
@@elizabethlanuzo5229 it is very commen dish in rural areas in Sri Lanka. No any miss guide totally edible ..
@@elizabethlanuzo5229 🤣 trust me I'm from sri lanka and this is edible..

We too eat the young ferns in Manipur and Mizoram in North Eastern India, it doest not have much taste of its own , the taste depends on the way you prepares like stir fry with chilly , crush peanuts and onion or cook with dry fish etc.
I was told by my mom that that all fern variety cannot be eaten , only there are selected ferns as herebwe have different types of fern s

We call that "pako", but the smaller ones, here in the Philippines. It's super tasty and it tastes really good when cooked with coconut milk and smoked fish. It can also be served as salad. 😋😋🤤
@Onenessed same as some foreign words that means vulgar to us. 😂 But yeah, let's just respect each other's languages. 🙌
