Yzerman’s career numbers would’ve been even higher if he didn’t change up his play to a defensive style in the Bowman years. But he probably wouldn’t have all those Cups either.

Stevie could have had 12-15 points in this game lol. That empty netter was a thing of beauty!

LOVED watching this. MacLean with the winner. Funny story. I went to University with Paul MacLean (though I never met him), and drove 12 hours to watch him play in Montreal in the Canadian University Championships. Ended up marrying a girl from his hometown, who's parents lived right across the street from him.
These were the beginnings of the exciting times for the Wings. Obviously Stevie with a career year, Gallant with 39, Adam Oates was a beast and perhaps the best setup man in the league. Lidstrom was just around the corner, Primeau was on the way, Probert was playing like an All Star, They were a very good team in 1989, but for years had suffered at the hands of the Oilers. The best thing about hoping for a suffering team as many of us did, was just how great it starts to feel when you sense they are doing all the right things and your team is staring to play. Great things were coming... I have that sense again. Same guy.

Late 80's - early 90's the best era to watch hockey.

Late 90’s Wings-Avalanche is my fav but I know you’re talking about overall teams.

Mickey Redmond reacts to non calls back then like he does to calls now. I love it. What a different time

I just love this kind of hockey. It’s so entertaining. I know a lot of people don’t like it they talk about how their fundamentals are terrible and about how unathletic the game was compared to today. Guys are better athletes today. I don’t disagree with any of that in general, but I just think if you’re trying to play an exciting sport and get people to turn the TV on and watch or come to the game so that you can make money off of your product this type of hockey is going to pull more people in that maybe normally wouldn’t watch a hockey game or go see a game because it’s so exciting it’s up and down the ice incredible scoring chances every few seconds. This is the type of hockey that was played in the 80s and early 90s that help raise the NHL to being on par with the other major sports leagues. It was this type of hockey that made players like Yzerman Gretzky Lemieux so exciting it showcase their skill it’s just my opinion but this is the type of hockey, that will grow the sport. Yes, it’s imperfect especially if you love fundamentals and defense of hockey. however, it helped grow the sport in ways that I’ve never been seen before or since. It gave you a chance to see something that had never happened before like Gretzky’s 200 point seasons Lemieuxs Incredibles seasons in 88 and 89, as well as Yzerman’s incredible run of 50 goal seasons in the late 80s and early 90s. None of these things are possible today because the way the game is played will not let this type of incredible excitement happen even if the players have similar skill too many of the great players in the 80s and 90s.

I bet tickets were about $10. More goals than dollars for the seat. Definitely got your money's worth.
