Datsyuk has the best hands the NHL has ever seen. Hands down (pun intended). There are a lot of guys that can dangle. Kane, Johnny Hockey, Giroux.... just none of them could do it during this era. The era where you get your head knocked off if you try skating up the middle. He could do that. The other guys would've gotten blown up back then.
I just want to pause here and acknowledge how much fun Gary Thorne is. I hope he calls hockey again sometime. He just sounds like he’s having a ball. Or puck.
Not bringing him back was a terrible mistake. I don't care that he's in his 70's. He has far more passion and energy than Sean McDonagh, who has the personality of burnt toast. And for a whole generation of Americans, his was THE voice of hockey.
I used to be a huge Thorne fan back in the late 80’s through the early 90’s. But then he started making himself bigger than the games he was calling, with his excessive and unprofessional screaming after a big play happened. I’m not saying that it was necessarily intentional, but it but it was enough to make him intolerable for me.
This made my night....thanks to the person that put it up....boy were we spoiled....we lived for playoff hockey in Detroit...praying Stevie can bring it back !!!!
The days when Detroit could take a double minor and a boarding and yiu didnt have to worry about it, now Detroit goes on a power play and I get a bit worried lol
My god i was a freshman in high school, the prime up and coming of my hockey career growing up in Detroit metro area. What a gift it was to grow up going to see these guys live. How could you not just hate or love us

As a native St Louisan and passionate Blues fan, it was salt in a gaping wound seeing Hull net the hat trick in that game, though not quite as his overtime Cup winning goal when he was with Dallas. 😢

In the middle of this brutal bruise-fest, the freeze frame of Shanny's face is reaction of a genuine mistake, and then his regret on the bench is nonverbally saying "damn, I hope is okay. where's my penalty?" I remember watching this live with my dad wondering how we got away with no penalty. Now I wonder how I took such high-caliber hockey for granted; despite being a Wings fan at age 7, I knew that the no-call HAD to be answered for somehow...and that dad definitely hated Pronger for SOME reason. Considering how awful the Wings have been playing now, it felt good watching the great team that they had then. The Blues sure gooned it up that game, to no avail. What a game!
Although they can play decent sometimes! Take their win against the Bolts last night. We are missing Ned and Larking. We should've bombed that game, but somehow we beat the consecutive Stanley cup winner. This gives me a little hope that the Wings might be coming back to a more respectable standard.
Great skills at display here. Datsyuk and Zetterberg skating around slow goons like Pronger. Shots by Lidström and Fedorov right in the top corners. And, finally, the most talented, underrated and impressive player of all time has to be Tomas Holmström. He has to be the most cross-checked player in NHL history. I can skate and handle, so I am not that impressed with stick skills, but I could never, in a million years, take to beating without retaliating like Holmström. I am so impressed by this ability to keep calm. To me, Holmström belongs in the HoF for this, along with his mastery of screening the goalie.
No question about the skill level of the players on that Wings team. Calling a first ballot Hall of Famer like Pronger a goon, however, defines credulity.
@@djzarrick Perhaps, goon is a bit harsh. Brute might be a better word. Pronger was slow, and used his size and strength (often with unlegal means). Hacking and slashing a lot when he couldn't skate as fast as the forwards. He played during the cluch-and-grab or wrestling era of hockey. I guess that different people have different view of the game. I like speed and skilll. Hacking, slashing, grabbing etc - not so much...
Look at this 5v3 vs what we run now. Their 5v3 was better than us now on 5v4. Look at all those defensively responsible, hang back players.. 😏. Tenacious, someone always applying pressure to the puck and knowing when to let someone else take the lead and fall back. They were just a super competitive team. All monopoly board flippers for sure.
Legendary season despite the finish. When you've got Yzerman out with injury for more than 2/3 of the season and your team still leads the NHL in scoring ... wow.

I'm fortunate enough to have talked to Ozzie about this game - he explained there was a deep hatred on the Blues at that time considering that they were never able to beat them in the playoffs (96, 97, 98, 02) and Detroit seemed to have their number nearly every game in the regular season, and that he got a real taste of it when he was on the Blues side.
I don’t know if we’ll ever see the likes of the old Blues-Blackhawks, Blues-Redwings, Redwings-Avalanche, et al rivalries again. I sure hope I’m wrong, though.

Been looking for the Wings game vs Predators in Nashville quite a few years back. Had I think 9 fights and Yzerman went after one of the refs and got kicked outta the game for arguing about a phantom penalty on Lidstrom. Might have been around 2003.
I remember watching that game. It was HOT on the ice that day. Blue usually gooned it up against the red wings since they were always the wings whipping boy during that time. The mix of players that played for both teams here is pretty interesting. Hull and shanahan played for the blues, osgood and drake played for the wings. That Hank, Pav, Hull line was unbelievable. The whole time they were together they had amazing chemistry. Obviously Z and Dats kept that going after Hull retired.

I do not know what game you watched but the blues where never afraid of getting into a fight. I think you might be watching another team and thought it was the blues. We where known for playing a more physical game as we were not a team that scored alot of goals like detroit.

The rivalry play was better but hockey from 97-04 was becoming an absolute borefest e.g Dallas, Minnesota
