Thanks for sharing. I just started my UA-cam channel a few days ago. I have to learn in this field. I will do all the process what you had mentioned. Thanks you Scott.
Wow, this is exceptional Scott! With all due respect and gratitude, I'm surprised that you don't offer a paid course detailing your process. Another case of "the cobbler's children" I suspect. Ah well, I'll be rewatching this video several times.
Too funny. I do have a course on iPhone video over at courses.skillcasting.com but haven't gotten around to a higher end course for training videos like. Hmm, maybe something to think about!
Great video Scotty. Can you please give more details of the Evernote program you use, and how you edit them all in FCP? I am about to start making Pain Videos for educational purposes. Thanks!
I use Evernote for my scripting and really everything! Dragon Anywhere is another program you can use too. They both allow you to speak into the app and convert your speech to text. This is great for getting everything OUT of your head and creating the foundation of your script. Evernote uses Siri and you'll be limited to about 30-second bursts at a time. Dragon allows you to talk for a long time. With a little training it's very powerful. You then need to go back and clean up your thoughts. I usually give a day or so. This way I'm more critical in my editing. I keep the file itself in Evernote and polish it there - not for formatting but for the words. I have several scripts in various stages of development in my Evernote. But the key is they all start with me speaking into my devices.
Thanks, Todd. I appreciate the kind words. I've found Keynote to be an awesome tool. While I have PowerPoint, it doesn't export slides as images. I like using both slide images and b-roll video in my presentations. Holler if you ever have any questions.
The video's a nice illustration of making a written script sound natural. Mind you, the sound quality wasn't great (especially with the B roll @3:00), so a lapel mic would be good. By the way, with PowerPoint you CAN save your slides as images (by clicking File > Save As). After choosing the file type (PNG or JPG or...), you're prompted whether to save the whole deck as images, or just the current slide. Anyway, thanks for sharing your process.
Craig, thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your comments. You're correct with the latest version of PPT being able to export images. I do think an earlier version (before I had 365) had this limitation. For me, being able to design in PPT/Keynote really accelerates the process.
Thank you, Scott, very clear explanation. It really helps me but... why don't talk about how to create an online course with the videos? Thanks again Marco
Marco, thank you. As a matter of fact I do have a course where I go into details about the process. You can find it at courses.skillcasting.com/p/video-presentations If you ever have questions, don't hesitate to ask though.
This video was done years ago. I’m pretty sure it was the Audio Technica 875R short shotgun mic. I had it placed over my head in my rather small office at the time. In my newer, much larger office, I use a Rode NTG-2 placed above my head. After listening to this just now, I still hear a bit of room noise. CrumplePop makes a FCPX plugin that removes some of the room noise and provides a pretty full sound. Hope this helps.
Anthony, I've had great success with Teleprompt+3. I can adjust the background color (I like green text on a black background), have great control over the speed, and can even control it with my iPhone to back up if I need to re-read a section. A key recording tip is to record in sections. If you mess up, just pause and re-record that section. In editing you can remove the bad takes. Add spacing between the sections so you can relax and not worry about chasing the script. You'll edit all that out and have a smooth finished delivery. Hope this helps!
Hey Nice Video! I just made a similar video on how to make a Channel Banner and I am still new at UA-cam so I was wondering if you could check it out and leave some pointers/advice in a comment, It would means a lot! Thanks in Advance. :) Here Is the Link: ua-cam.com/video/9mEyj8MFpm4/v-deo.html
Egon, I use iThoughtsX on my Mac. I love it. It stores my mindmaps in the cloud and I can use the app on my Mac but also on my iPhone and iPad. Really helps me organize my thoughts!
Hi Scott! This video is tremendous, there is such a great info here, thank you for sharing to us, I was wondering about a similar tool but for Windows platform, i do not use Mac :( yet . I have been researching about tools to create training videos for Win, the most convenient between quality and cost. What do you think about, could you recommend me something? Thanks in advance!
All of the high end video editors will do this including Adobe Premier, Sony Vegas, etc. You may want to consider something a bit simpler though - Techsmith Camtasia. That's because Camtasia is a great screen recorder and you can record all your PowerPoint presentations and then EDIT IN your delivery - including chromakey. I used Screenflow on my Mac to do the same with great results. Holler if you have questions and I'll help you out.
Thank you very much for your approach, it really helps me a lot. I have been reaching about Camtasia and I know that it is a really good tool, but if you had to use a free tool, which would you use and why? it is the same scope: Make training videos. I understand if you use free tools obviously these will have less functional features, however, maybe some free tool might help to do basic training videos. I need some characteristics in the training videos, the most important are: talking head video, how-to demo, screen-capture. Thanks in advanced.
I totally understand about the price. You may want to consider www.screencastify.com/products/screen-recorder/ as an inexpensive screencasting tool. I'm sure there are others out there too but I haven't researched them as much. And while there are free recording tools, it's the editing workflow to really consider. A good editing tool like Screenflow (Mac), Camtasia (PC), or FCPX and Premier for high end stuff, can really take your videos to the next level and make your life easier. For example, being able to edit out mistakes instead of having to do re-takes :-)
My home office is kinda small. It's about 12x14. The way I have it setup though, I can slide the iPad thru the slats of the blinds. This places it right behind the camera and I can see over the flip-out screen. So with this setup, I can see myself to make sure I'm framed up and look right over it to see my script playing on my iPad hanging from the window blinds. There are iPad tripod adapters but I don't have the room for another gadget up against the wall. And don't forget, the key to getting the teleprompter to still look like your looking at the camera is to use a real teleprompter OR have some distance between you and teleprompter you're reading from. Hope this helps.
I have an interview for GA coming up next week. I do screen on technical guides for customer education. I really need this GA and I basically use camtasia to edit and make videos. how do make a 10mins video presentation to demonstrate my video making experience?. I need all the advise now
Samuel, the latest version of Camtasia does chromakeying. You can create a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation and then place yourself over the graphics. That's the same effect I did in this presentation. You can also use Camtasia to record a screencast or Prezi presentation and place yourself over those for another type of look. Hope this helps. Good luck with the GA.
Yes, you can place a video scribe video "over" your presentation delivery. Camtasia allows you stack your videos so this is no problem. Deliver your presentation and talk to Videoscribe. Then place an example over the track while you're speaking to it. It'll be a nice effect.
I shot this in front of a green screen. In my video editor, I remove the back ground and reposition myself over the white background. I use Final Cut Pro X but really, any video editor should do the trick. Hope this helps.
Scott, Pro workflow from a Pro video producer! Thanks for sharing. You are always inspirational and a great teacher.
Marlene, it' so nice to see you! Hope you and your son are doing well. Thanks so much for the kind words!
We're doing great Scott. Glad to see you back in action on UA-cam!
Nice job. I might have to start doing this for my college students in September so I'm doing a little investigating . Thanks for this
Thanks so much Scott, this was a great find. You are clear and easy to understand and have made a daunting task look so much simpler.

Superb video. You have followed every letter of what you said in the production of this video.
Thanks. The process has worked very well for me. Holler if I can ever help answer questions or help you out.
Cool!!!You have changed the my perspective towards creating such things
best video I've seen so far about the subject. tnx
Good process and very professional presentation. Thank you.
Great Job ! I didn't even think of using Keynote which I have. Keep up the great work and Thanks again for doing what you do..
