  • Ep. 16 - Hyperfocus & Rabbit Holes!
In this episode we talk about how our interests can change and evolve, jump around, and how the rabbit holes that our hyperfocus drives us into are not necessarily pleasant or connected to our special interests.
Thing of the Day: not clearly defined today ;) so many things!

Dear Drs Dymond and Toudal - it might amuse you both that listening to your conversations starting my day really helps me get out of my Rabbit hole and back into my Hyperfocus related to work. I feel that it is due to it helping me spark connections between random aspects of "work" that i am processing in the backburner, and helped me "word" the non-verbal concepts subconsciously.
Neurodivergent minds having a very intellectual and unmasked conversations tend to do that to me :)
Imagine a world where you have a WHOLE research dept populated by neurodivergents.... and the sensory friendly spaces and scheduling that can enable us to bring our best ideas to the World. Where Rabbitholes and Hyperfocus is treated as a VALID mode of working and functioning and not penalised by NT working hours and KPI standards... ah. That would be so nice!
    Let's build one ;)

This following comment, isn't directly related to this video. Maybe a some point, in one video, you can include a segment on how helpful being allowed to use an audio recording device would be during university lectures. It could make it so that a student doesn't get distracted by having to take written notes during a lecture. Personally, I think it would really help me.

Good idea! I tend to focus on elementary/primary level when we talk about education, but I also teach at the grad level and accommodations would be a really good topic. Thanks, Craig!

I am also a fan of Emily D. Baker 💜⚖
    Thanks for the podcast! 🌼
Would you perhaps consider talking about Justice Sensitivity? I think that Neurodivergent people can get more (hyper)focused on rights, & it's difficult when you want to help in an area, but it's not your paid work.
You end up thinking, "How is this not considered more important than whatever (possibly mundane) job? Why am I the only one that sees this?"
Just as it will be nice for academia to get even more Neurodivergent-friendly, there are so many areas of passion & activism that get considered as 'unproductive' by others because they don't make money or because you don't have credentials in that area yet. Not saying that income, training & structure aren't important, but so many areas where we have strength & intrinsic motivation can get caught in barriers.
Or you're seen as a whistleblower at work because people see you as dismantling (rather than improving) the system, & that's a threat 🙁

Good idea. I cannot let go of unfairness to others in this world, and it can be so painful. And really good point about the value others place (or don't) on this work. Autistics are often whistleblowers. Oh, you're getting me thinking!

@@drkaradymond Thanks so much for the response & the heart. I had been a bit anxious actually about leaving my comment up since sometimes people do judge what others prioritize.
& in regards to ADHD- I agree when people say it's not about Deficit. No, in my opinion, that second letter should be Distribution! So glad that Monotropism & Strengthsfinder got mentioned.
