    What actually works on an AX53 is a Mennon 72 mm lens hood with a 55 to 72 mm step-up ring. The 72 mm lens hood is a little wider so you don't see its edges. Works like a charm.

      Thanks for commenting. Most definitely a great camcorder, I would have liked to upgrade to the AX700 but that's now out of production, so I'll have to stick with the AX53 for a while longer.

    You wouldn't see the lens hood, if you weren't using the step-up ring. The ring moves the hood farther away than it's supposed to be

    I have this exact lens hood for my ax53 and the image stabilizer wonders to the sides and show soldiers in that box. To use this you need to zoom your camera in so it doesn't shows the corners from the matte box. The problem is the Sony ax53 has such a wide angle with that Optical gyro stabilisation.

    A 16:6 wide angle Mennon lens hood - the type seen in this video - is available on Amazon. It comes with a 55-58 mm step-up ring.
    This is a great video, by the way. I've one question, though: no matter how obscure my questions, whether regarding a vintage 1918 film camera or the most recent digital 4K
    cameras, virtually every UA-cam video that answers my questions is the work a Brit. Any time a video a starts and I hear any sort of UK accent, I think: "Here come the answers!" Have you cornered the market of photographic experience and insight?
    No - thank YOU!

    Your video was good and I bought everything that you suggested in your video. My camera took good video but it was hard to seen the screen on a bright day and a little difficult to zoom in with the camera lens without having a lot of shaking. So I decide to get a Sony camcorder to take video that had an eyepiece for when it was bright out and I couldn't see the screen due to glare. Well I purchased it and and I noticed that I had a couple of issues with it that I didn't like, 1. I found it difficult for me to download the video onto my Mac Desktop. 2nd. issue which may be my biggest is that when I wanted to use my eyepiece viewfinder, I found that it was hard to see out of and that when looking through the eyepiece the view was very small not like looking throw my camera's eyepiece which seemed to be magnified. I tried to see if there was any accessory that I could buy like a eyepiece magnifier for better viewing and couldn't find anything so I wrote to Sony to see if they could help me out with accessories to solve my problem and I never heard back from them. Very poor customer relations and I I'm sorry that I bought this product "Sony FDR AX53 camcorder. Thumbs down for Sony Customer Relations and two thumbs down for eyepiece viewfinder.

      ABfromWindsor I've been on the lookout for an eye cup for the ax53 as well, but as you say there doesn't seem to be anything available, I even looked into making my own using a modified rifle scope eye cup, I may revisit that idea.

      This video was filmed with a Canon PowerShot s200 which doesn't have a 3.5mm Mic socket. Also it was one of my early YT videos (2017)so I was only just getting equipment together for making YT videos. I now use either a Rode wireless go or a rode wireless filmmaker kit, I I have definitely spent a couple of quid on a decent microphone.

    I'm guessing that you are seeing the edge of the sunshade when zoomed out because screwing it onto the UV filter puts it a bit further out from the camcorder lens, thus putting the edges into the field of vision.

      It's a great camcorder, the stabilization system ( BOSS) works fantastically well,
      I found it a bit bulky, but it is very well put together. you will need a very powerful PC to edit 4k and a 4K monitor to really get the benefit of the 4K, unfortunatly my PC can't handle 4K, so I,ve not tried that.
      The sony AX100 is a more Pro spec camcorder (more £$ though) but is has more manual controls. The Sony AX53 is a very capable bit of kit.

    Can you actually attach anything to the filter thread of the AX53 that doesn't show in the corners when zoomed out? Not being able to attach an ND filter without vignetting at wide angle settings is actually no go at all for me. The stabilisation looks great but the limitations of no on board ND is a severe limitation. Sony obviously want more serious videographers to keep saving for the AX100.

    • @lensmanonline
      @lensmanonline  7 років тому +2

      I have a U.V filter attached to the front on my AX 53 and it's not visible when zoomed out. so a ND filter my not show unfortunatly there's no real way of telling unless you attach one.
      I wanted the AX100, it has the 1" sensor and manual controls . i couldn't justify the price tag.
      The "Boss" stabilisation does work great.
      Thanks for commenting.

      if you are worried, put a step up ring on the front then attach your filter, i run a UV filter on mine as i film in dust environments, so figures thats easier to clean then the lens, and i have never run into issues of the 55mm filter getting into shot

    • @tomrhardwick

      You say no onboard ND filter Arthur but there are in fact two. As light levels increase the lens only stops down by one stop and from there on internal (undocumented) ND takes over. I've shot at smaller apertures but don't; diffraction makes the images horribly soft.

    Where on Earth are 4K60 camcorders at the £500-600 mark?! I've been waiting for a 4K60 camcorder in the $500-1000 price range for about 6 years now. But every year all anyone seems to do is rebrand their 4K30 again.
    The Sony AX-53 came out very late 2015 / early 2016, are Sony really saying they have no better sensor and processor to make a new camcorder? So instead they just take something off the AX53 and then charge the same price as what you can already pick up the AX53 for anyway. Why is 4K60 taking so long to come out arrive to the price point? Phones and GoPros have been doing 4K60 for years and even moved onto 4K120 and 8K30. When are we going to see Panasonic or Sony bring this to ~£600 price point, like a HC-VX2 or AX63??? They wouldn't need to spend that much money either, keep the lens and OIS and body and everything else the same but just update the sensor and processors to give us 4K60 on H.265.
    For my use case which is filming low league football, handheld, pitch side you do seem to need a proper dedicated camcorder because the image stabilisation is much better on these plus the electric zooming and super fast focusing. I just wish they brought out 60fps version as I need to slow down clips at times, a 4K60 AX43 or HC-VX1 would be perfect.

    A UV filter is the worst thing you can buy, you will lose a lot of image quality and many give nasty light reflection. An ND filter would have been useful especially the ND8. A circular polariser will also be useful, while both reduce light, the polariser can increase pr decrease reflections and glare. You should never have a filter on all the time, but use them when needed. Evidence suggests that dropping a camera with a filter on will increase the damage sustained..

  • @tomrhardwick
    @tomrhardwick 7 років тому +2

    Gosh, don't ever use a filter on a lens of such a short focal length as the DoF will invariably bring any imperfections (on both glass surfaces) into near focus. Remember that this camera has two (undocumented) internal ND filters, so don't be tempted to add those to the front of the lens either.

    • @lensmanonline
      @lensmanonline  7 років тому

      Tom Hardwick Thanks for your comment I put the filter on to try and protect the floating lens & sensor tube. I’ve not noticed any issues using the filter as yet.
      Thanks

    • @tomrhardwick
      @tomrhardwick 7 років тому +1

      The real problems with using filters on such very short focal length zooms occurs when you shoot at wideangle into the light, when even spotlessly clean (or so we think) filters put spots on your image. I've done some controlled tests and immediately I binned my posh UV filter for 99% of my work..
      A UV is great for physical protection such as when you film on salt spray beaches or in dust storms, but for most of us the 6 bladed, automatic lens cap does an excellent job of protecting the front element.

    • @lensmanonline
      @lensmanonline  7 років тому

      Tom Hardwick Using filters is something I inherited from photography using SLR’s. I must admit I’ve not used the camcorder much as my ageing pc refuses to render HD video
      Thanks

    • @tomrhardwick
      @tomrhardwick 7 років тому +1

      Yes, and it's a mistake many people make. A nice wideangle on your SLR was probably in the order of 28mm, so a *much* longer focal length than the 4.4mm lens on this Sony. Imagine a 4.4 mm on your SLR and you can see how such an incredibly tiny focal length would have almost infinite DoF, so bringing any attached filter into focus.
