  • We bought a blue water sailing boat and would love to give you guys a guided boat tour in this video. We actually bought this sail boat a couple of years ago now and have been trying very hard to spin several plates at the same time which are; One: living on a sail boat full time, Two, trying to do up a 40 year old, blue water sailing boat, whilst living on it full time (this bit is actually really tricky at times) and three, actually using the classic sail boat to head off on adventures of our own, now, not several years in the future.
    Safe to say that it's not always easy, but so far, leaving 'regular life' in a bricks and mortar house, to live on an old English Sailing Yacht full time and try to write more colourful chapters for our life stories, has, well, been amazing fun!

    A great update boat tour. Thank you so much for the shout out (plug) it really is appreciated! We have been a couple of days with no data and only just got back to Impavidus with two Turktelecom sims and the ability to catch up on our favorite channels. 😁 It's a great story you guys have. How far you have come and taken so many with you on a journey of discovery and learning, that you have shared to help others, provide information, experience, entertainment, a few laughs; and done so with such humility. Thanking those that have added to that journey as you have made the passage.. Paying it forward. Then there is the star of the show Mr Hank. Like Oscar he has a big following and no video would be complete without a pooch segway or even a few pooch thoughts. 🐾 In a couple of weeks we will be wintering and starting our how to and maintenance videos, some big upgrades for us, and some real basic stuff too. Including a raspberry-pie upgrade inspired by you guys! Again, thank you for shout out, like you we believe that knowledge and experience is a gift to share, along with mistakes made and lessons learned. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

    Some great upgrades and good tips- thank you. There is always so much more to learn! You spoke about the unlikelihood of losing all 4 navigation sources at the same time. It can happen- a lightning strike would very likely take the whole lot out. I know, it happened to us twice over the years...... In terms of living offgrid on your boat, it's important to have a secondary form of accessing things like water if your electrics fail. A fresh water foot pump at the sink that diverts water from your main tank will sort that. we also have a saltwater foot pump which can be useful to eke out the water supply if used for washing up, just then rinse in freshwater. We have the capacity to live for approx 6-9 months onboard without needing outside input. Solar plus a wind generator, small watermaker only 6 pints an hour but completely from wind generator power. Deck fillers that allow us to collect water from the decks during heavy downpours- lots of those this summer! Food storage is big space guzzler. We can a great deal of produce such as meats which saves space in our freezer and is shelf stable for many many months, we also have a dometic freezer- a great piece of kit. No diesel heater for us- we have a small log burner which we can also cook on during the colder months. One of our best purchases was an ancient hand cranked sewing machine. It has repaired sails, made sprayhoods and all the other canvas needs on the boat, saves us a fortune. Good luck to you both. As we head towards the end of our cruising careers its great to watch you at the beginning of yours. We are very envious of all the things that you are discovering for the first time.

      @CadohaAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      Wow, so many pearls of wisdom there. We do have paper charts for everywhere we go as back ups to our four ‘Nav instruments’ but I imagine a lightening strike would also take out a designated chart plotter anyhow. Man that must have been terrifying though, glad to hear you weren’t actually hurt by the electricity 😳😳

    That was great. I love the homeliness of your refits, a real family home. That is one of the huge advantages of an older boat, you don’t have the “I can’t change that because it is part of the original ‘teak’ theme”. You have just plowed in and done the home redecoration with fabulous end result. The bathroom (enough of this “head” business), the creative studio/chart room, the salon with that really warm upholstery (original I think), your mural, the lighting, not to mention the great impact of wall papers. It’s all practical, delightful, you’ve done it together, and it reflects your personalities.

    • @CadohaAdventures
      @CadohaAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      If it’s turned out well then you can thank Carly for about 95% of what you can see. She really does have an amazingly creative eye.
      The furniture upholstery’s original, it’s not what we would choose ourselves, but it’s all still in ok condition and is inoffensive enough. That and the quite to chance it was a lot of money 🤣🤣⛵️

    I love the layout of this boat and the condition you have brought her to. Not a brand known here in the US but very nice. The beam is amazing for a vessel this length. I would guess all that's left is a water maker to be completely off grid for a time. If it were me I think I would anchor in the British Virgin islands and find a job as a bar tender at a beach bar. Great vid. Happy trails.

    Just found your channel and instantly subscribed. As a retired refrigeration technician I would like to offer some advice that will help you manage your power consumption. I noticed that there was a significant layer of frost on your refrigerator’s cold plate. This will cause excess power consumption. As the frost gets thicker it acts as insulation between the cold plate and the cold space which causes the compressor to run longer and less efficiently. I would recommend that you defrost the cold plate when the refrigerator is near empty and you are out shopping for groceries. This will ensure most efficient operation. Applies to your freezer as well.
    Cheers. Wayne

    We love your videos. Particularly helpful and encouraging us as we are in a full refit of our slightly older (1977) Rival 38 Centre Cockpit. Our interior was in much worse condition (leaking windows and dorade vents and more). Your flush deck and extra beam give a lot more space! We are also full electric for cooking, but we are also installing an electric motor so we are putting in 1680Ah of batteries (same make as yours but a different brand) and lots of solar. We are a ketch and our summer holiday turned into full strip and then paint&fill both masts (too much galvanic corrosion from various bodges to ignore). Our chainplates were dodgy (just a bronze eyebolt with very poor backing plate) so we are also fully re-rigging but with dyneema, including dyneema chainplates. Hoping to be on the water around Anglesey next summer.

    20:18 Never understood having the fire extinguisher inside the engine compartment rather than outside it and nearby. Think about it: if you're hauling off the engine cover because you suspect or know there's a fire, you're now going to reach into a burning compartment to grab a possibly untouchably-hot metal fire extinguisher, all the while with your face and arms near or in the flames and smoke...makes no sense to me! I'd have it mounted horizontally outside and above, with another over the port side access hatch. Lovely vessel indeed, your chart station is brilliant.

    Great Boat by Great Architects with a very liveable Draft as a proper Cruising Boat (a 4ft Draft is perfection, due to a greatly reduced risk of Grounding in places like the Bahamas, accessing the ICW in the USA, and so many other places, but a 5ft draft generally means you only have to anchor a little further out, and exercising a bit more care with things like low tide water levels). As I can’t fit what I need onto the smaller Model with a 4ft Draft, my next Sailboat will also have a 5ft Draft (mostly due to needing a delivery Skipper plus Crew, and fitting them in Comfortably also requires two heads and showers as well, for seven Berths in total- and lightly laden, that Draft can be reduced by up to 8 inches less if necessary according to the Boatbuilders. In interesting news personally, there is a chance I’ll be able to put the Construction order in, this July. Not holding my breath just yet though. 😅 I do like the just sub 40ft Sailboats a heck of a lot and just wish I could still get what I now need into one still. Ho Hum, grateful I can still have a Boat with Sails though really. I thought initially that I was going to be doomed to have a Motor Boat- still heaps better than no boat to be afloat on of course. Very impressive aesthetic changes and also functionality changes!
    Your talking about self sustainability afloat reminds me of an Aussie guy we met this season in the west country, he sails alone and his boat is so together he can stay offshore almost indefinitely. He uses wind generated charging, captures rain water with ingenious devices he put together and has a back up survival method where he distills sea water in a converted pressure cooker of all things. (doesn't trust watermakers - resents the cost / space they occupy and says they're forever breaking down ). He won't use diesel heaters for similar reasons and has a wood burner instead ( which he can cook on ). Drops a lobster pot or shoots fish with a speargun when at anchor and keeps a simplistic and impressive boat. Very quiet and helpful guy, but won't sail with anyone else and hates rules of any kind (lol).

    If you are thinking of solar solutions, we find flexible panels to be extremely convenient. You can bend them to fit almost flush (in your case, you could get a lot of watts if you stuck them to the coach roof). They are also tough, so you can stand on them. We use Renogy, and recommend all their solar products highly.

Better to have it outside the Engine Room close to the access panel, so you won’t be burning your hands when trying to use it to put out a fire in the Engine room with it, as without a fire, it was already Hot ? 🤔Bob. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🌟🌟🌟

      The upgrades we want to make next are to try and take the boat to a level where we can survive off grid, certainly for the spring to late autumn months in the UK at least, and then we want to be able to be self sufficient in a world that’s starting to feel ever more bonkers with panic buying, supply shortages, rationing, lockdowns etc etc.

    Great channel Impavidus, nice to see them getting a mention, hoping to bump into Ant and Cid, to buy them a nice meal for all the great hands on experience they’re passing on tbh. They got me looking very closely at Bavaria Sailboats tbh, they sadly just don’t do one with a shallow enough Draft for what I need, but they are certainly very well built . If I was sticking with the Med, I could probably get away with a Bavaria tbh, but too Deep Draft for me, around Britain even. A bit sad, as they are brilliant value for money. Bob. ☹️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🌟🌟🌟

    Cadoha is looking good. Very impressive.
    With regards to your electric system, I think there is an important lesson to learn. Having a great battery bank is good. However, if the usage is more than is being put in, sooner or later you run out of power. One way to increase your solar generation is to move somewhere with more sun. (Having said that, I guess it is not so easy since Brexit). Another way to even things up is to be less greedy with items that use electricity. The idea of electric cooking etc seems nice, but not easy to support.
    I can't remember, have you upgraded your alternator? If not than can be a good source of charging power. They come with amazing outputs these days. With a high power alternator charging a lithium battery bank (they can be charged at a much higher rate than normal batteries), you can put a large amount of power into your battery bank in half an hour's motoring from or to your anchorage.
