Had similar problem. But i've only ever used the petrol tank 3 times in over 5 months. I was aware of this already and had to perform it. While one is there...take the time to lubricate all moving parts after a good cleaning. That will keep things moving smoothly for a longer period of time
Too much electronics in BMW bikes, they need to back peddle a little and go back to key start and a key to open the tank. This is an Adventure bike, not a city bike so keep it simple BMW. The dealer told me to keep a WD40 on the bike, not acceptable BMW, get rid of the problem as customers pay a lot of money for a GS.
I totally agree that some electronics on bikes have gone just to o far. I am always having issues with the battery in my key fob. Never enough charge. Thanks for watching and your comments. Cheers. Billy
Hi CEPrepper. Thanks for watching and your comment. I should perhaps have mentioned that I used some WD40 and a rag to clean it. The reason I did not show it was because you would not have seen anything as filming the actual cleaning of, my hands would have blocked the view due to the very small area i was cleaning. The pin position is as it is because when the pin is in the lock position the lid is closed. Cheers Billy
So first BMW go out of their way by fitting indicator buttons on each handlebar and a cancel button on the throttle side … now they put electronics instead of a key for something as everyday as ‘filling it up’ .. they take away the rear light and substitute it with indicators …. I like my BMW but I seriously doubt I’d upgrade to a new one … they are trying to be clever when clever in reality is /was thought of decades ago … if it ain’t broke don’t fix it ( obviously BMW enjoys all the LED lighting and electronic fuel locks as they know they have customers at the parts department for years and years ahead
Another example of BMW creating useless problematic marketing features such as keyless engine start, & keyless fuel cap. So BMW workaround to open fuel cap, now means that anyone can siphon fuel from the bike - without the key - by using a torz driver. Also means anyone can sabotage fuel by access to the fuel cap via the torx screws. So the 'dance' has got more complicated, & opened pandora's box.
I agree to some of your points especially on the complicated nature of keyless ride. The key fob always telling me battery low. Its a pain. Everything else you mentioned, if people want to nick fuel they will get much more from a car or lorry. not worried about fuel being siphoned. Thanks for watching. Cheers. Billy
Thank god I'll never have to bother with that! I'd never own something with this much electric - even EFI and ABS is too much! 😌 But it's still good to know in case I come by a GS owner that has that problem.

No keyless for me thanks anyway :-) Good old keys nothing wrong with.
I tend to agree. More trouble than they are worth sometimes
I was aware of this already and had to perform it. While one is there...take the time to lubricate all moving parts after a good cleaning.
That will keep things moving smoothly for a longer period of time
Thanks for watching and your feedback. Cheers. Billy
Cheers. Billy
Give it a good clean - doesn’t show cleaning or pin position before changing frames to close it back up…skip the first 3 mins and focus on how to
Hi CEPrepper.
Cheers. Billy
Wow, what am I missing. I fill up my gas tank how often in my GSA. Nothing like a key that works 100% of the time. Been doing it for near 50 years.
Great that you dont have these problems. Cheers. Billy
Thank god I'll never have to bother with that! I'd never own something with this much electric - even EFI and ABS is too much! 😌 But it's still good to know in case I come by a GS owner that has that problem.
Hi Herla. Thanks for watching and comment. Even the modern 690 Enduro / Husky 701 has ABS etc. Great that you have a bike that does not have as much electric. I do like my T7, its simplicity of just ABS and nothing else. NO issues with key entry to petrol tank. Was bound to happen to my GSA at some stage. Cheers Billy
So my attempt resulted in me dropping the bracket into the petrol tank!!! Had to make a hook and scoop it out!! Was a very stressful experience!
Ah mate that does sound stressful. So glad that you got it out though. These things happen. I greased up my final drive a couple of years ago and the shaft came off completely, managed to get it back on though. Thanks for watching. Cheers. Billy
good to, clean over time...bought a 750 gs from dealer last week, He could not open the cap to show me how it works....SHUT OF IGNITION DUMMY. I MUCH prefer it be use a real key, so dependent on key fob with a 1 year battery in it controlling to much.
Hi Ed. Kind of getting that thinking myself as well. Key to open no issues at all! Thanks for watching and your comment. Enjoy the 750, I have not ridden one yet Cheers Billy
$35 k bike and a crappy looking fuel tank , these BMWs are just exspensive lemons , wish I hadn’t brought one , have had nothing but issues with locks , lights etc 😡
Ah no, I am really gutted that you have had that experience with your BMW. Apart from the key fob running out o battery really quickly, mine has been all good. Are you going to change? Cheers Billy
@@BillysBikeAdventures yeah I still have the bike but on top of that issue , I had the headlight crap out the first week , the seat lock broke in the second week and don’t get me started on the soft crappy material used on the passenger seat (pretty much all happens with in the first month ) so my impressions of BMw and its build quality is very low (as well as thier after purchase support ) personally I wouldn’t buy another one (no need anyway , they are a very expensive lemon )
I just did this fix, only to discover that what i really needed to do was to turn the bike off 😆
Switching on and off definitely did not work for me. I am curious, if you did the fix how did you then discover that all you needed to do was to switch the bike on and off? Cheers Billy
@@BillysBikeAdventures Because i first did the fix only to discover that the lid still did not open. After i parked the bike and turned off the ignition i though "i'll give it ONE more try" -and VOILÃ. And then it dawned on me: aaah, of course: the ignition must be swithed off for the lid to open. (Just like a bike with ordinary key really- kinda hard to unlock the lid if you dont take the key from the ignition 😄)
