I guess they decided to have a relative of Barney own it instead, and it's just named after him for some reason, maybe uncle Al really loves his nephew or something.
Very thorough chronology on Barney's drinking, sobriety and "flip-flopping" period - I didn't realize how much Barney went back and forth during that time before returning to alcohol. Whether drinking, smoking, eating, or any addiction, some people will "yo-yo" back and forth between extremes, depending how they feel about their life. So at least this is realistic to those for whom the struggle is never over. But good thing they never promised a Beatle that Barney would quit drinking permanently! 😉
I always felt sorry for how pathetic Barney was as a character. When they revealed he was a scholar before Homer ruined his life, I really felt sorry for him. They honestly should have quietly retired him as a character after making him sober.
How about the development of Ralph Wiggum from ordinary classmate character (and mini golf semi-finalist), to the only person in Lisa's class that actually acted like a second-grader, to repository for overly long and awkward phrases, to (finally) the meme generator.

It made our paper. People were amused and befuddled. Later it turned out that this was a parody of Andy Richter, who gave a talk at Villanova a year earlier. This was pretty anticlimactic. Anyway, we have more NCAA championships than Gudger College, so there's that.

Sober Barney is the one thing introduced in _Zombie Simpsons_ I liked. My father died from metastasized bladder cancer, and my sister has plenty of her own health problems from alcoholism, so I'm legitimately mad they went back on this. But I'm not surprised, really; nihilism's _Zombie Simpsons_ in a nutshell. I'm just very, extremely, disappointed.

Barney was so weak to alcohol that his life would've been ruined either way. If he didn't become a drunk before college, he would've become one during college, and he would've ended up as a drop-out with a ludicrously giant debt. Homer just helped him avoid the worst possible outcome.

I Think everyone know a "Barney", for me Is my uncle, he's honest and hard-working man, but alcohol distorted him in a pathetic alcoholic business man who becomes a burden for our family, he addiction is so strong that he will literally drink anything trying to get drunk, and has already drinked things like paint remover and gasoline. He's been in this addiction for at least 30 years, now that cirrhosis is catching up he won't be around for much longer, but makes me wonder how healthy and long life he could have lived, because took 30 years of addiction to destroy his liver, now he's a dead man walking waiting for his organ to fail, and stills goes to the bar on every opportunity
One of these days Barney Gumble is going to die from liver failure due to years of alcohol abuse. He could also end up in a seizure induced coma where he was never awake from. Infact Barney should be dead from liver failure or an alcohol induced coma right now.
