    The math required in the Tinker mirror was insane; these two guys also knew each other's game like no one else, having been long time friends and team members. The whole match, but especially this game, were top notch.

    • @MSUHitman
      @MSUHitman 9 років тому +7

      mtg opened Yes when ESPN 2 was struggling for content in the 90's it was a staple of coverage on the network. Eventually ESPN started getting college sports on ESPN 2 which eventually forced Wizards to invest in their own set of cameras, etc. for coverage.

    Love Finkel's reaction to the Sanctuary play. he was the only who realized that it was bad.

    • @TiRune
      @TiRune 7 років тому

      It was also necessary, otherwise Maher would just lose to the colossus :/

    • @Gorgoj
      @Gorgoj 7 років тому +8

      Tijmen Blankevoort but you play the necropolis after attacking so finkel could not play his processor.

    • @carlosspencer5369
      @carlosspencer5369 6 років тому +5

      If Maher put Finkel down to 1 then he would not be able to pay for processor and that basically shuts him out of the game, playing necropolis post combat will protect from colossus too. Finkel is just so good to have seen this misplay.

    • @patmacrotch5611
      @patmacrotch5611 3 роки тому +3

      Yea, the crowd and commentator reactors threw me. Was Maher just planning on trying to mill him and not 0 life him?

    • @FlamingZelda3
      @FlamingZelda3 3 роки тому +3

      @@patmacrotch5611 He paid 19 life and then chose to make life mostly irrelevant, the reactors saw that as a strong play, but his opponent (and the comments above) recognized that he did not need to play that artifact when he did and it may have been stronger to hit his opponent for 19 life.

      Well that’s what happens when you’re playing a set that contains only four cards that are worth $40-$100 and then when the set gets shipped it out the $40 to 100 cards are now $.25 each. That’s why you have to use those cards quickly become pro or end your miserable career

    for those of you who are wondering about the play of all these cards without sleeves... the DCI had a rule where in all high level magic tournaments the top 8 would be played without sleeves to prevent cheating. I think replacement cards were on hand to make sure cards were without nicks and scratches and such.

  • @SyntheticaYT
    @SyntheticaYT 11 років тому +17

    Bob Maher played Crumbling Sanctuary, which turns all damage into milling instead. But he played it BEFORE attacking...if he waited and attacked for 19 *first*, Finkel would have been at 1 life and couldn't pay any life to make blockers with his Phyrexian Colossus. Instead, Finkel got milled for 19, made blockers with Sanctuary, and eventually won.

    Sleeves weren't manufactured consistently back then, so they varied in size. This would "mark" certain cards in your deck, so tournaments banned them.

    I guess the play being referred to in the column is Maher playing the Sanctuary pre-combat, allowing Finkel to let the token through unblocked and still have life to play for his own Processor?

  • @PHemidall

    Two players pay 19 life, but what made Bob concede was milling his Stroke of Genius, that would mill Finkel thanks to Crumbling Sanctuary previous work.
    This was a mill mirror match disguised as a control match with big bois. LONG LIVE THE MILL.

  • @InfernalHibiscus
    @InfernalHibiscus 11 років тому +2

    Why would he pay 19? Paying 10 is still a 2 turn clock, it still blocks a Colossus, and you don't die to a Colossus.

    • @davidhickey8613
      @davidhickey8613 6 років тому +1

      because colossus is a one of, and the main kill from each deck was to make tokens. if your opponent got bigger token than you, you essentially couldnt win.

    Were they playing with no sleeves 💢 ?

    • @pphyjynx8217
      @pphyjynx8217 6 років тому +2

      2 reasons:
      1) glare means that the old cameras could not see the cards
      2) sleeves were badly produced back then, so they were often miscut, WotC could see this as a form of marking cards, so sleeves were banned in tournaments.
