    Supermotos need supermoto brakes. Lots of brakes, 320mm rotors, four piston calipers, radial master cylinders, and steel braided brake lines. The only way to stop faster is to throw out an anchor. Moto-Master and Core Moto hooked up this Big Red Pig with the best stopping power out there.

    Steel braided lines alone make a huge difference!

    • @mannydcbianco
      @mannydcbianco 5 років тому

      Seriously. I have to wonder if the people who say otherwise have ever switched to steel braided lines on a motorcycle, on their own motorcycle. I mean I guess maybe it doesn't make a noticeable difference on most cars, I wouldn't know, but on a bike the difference is very much noticeable.

    • @mannydcbianco
      @mannydcbianco 5 років тому

      I think it's especially noticeable in very warm climates, like in Texas. Rubber gets softer when it heats up, and a black rubber brake line will in direct sunlight in the summer in Texas reach about 165 degrees. Rubber that hot is bound to be much softer than the same brake line in 65 degree weather.

    Good quality steel braided lines on a car aren't silly and they aren't a joke. They make the pedal feel a lot better, a lot stiffer, and a little more sensitive and allow you to put the full potential amount of pressure to the calipers. I put a set on my car and let a few people drive it and everyone locked up the fronts when they drove it for the first time.

    You sure know what your doing! You make it look easy! When I was a kid I loved helping dad with car stuff! I really wanted to be a auto mechanic, but my mom put her foot down and said, no girl of mine is going to be a mechanic! Your going to typing school and be a secretary! I wish I would have stood up to her! Then I would have been the auto mechanic and my husband the A&P mechanic (he passed 8 yrs ago). Ours kids didn't inherit the mechanic gene, our girl was a model for 3+ years, now working at her dream job as an artist for computer driven stuff (???) and our son is an IT guy and builds gaming computers. Engineering explained has a lot of text book knowledge....but then he says some shit that shows you he needs some real world knowledge
    PS: When you are trying to compare car brakes to bike brakes most people forget that 95% of the cars you are talking about employ brake boosters. You may not even feel that squish of the rubber line when it is being transferred through a brake booster....but when 100% of your braking force is coming from you (your leg/hand).....

    • @mannydcbianco
      @mannydcbianco 5 років тому +2

      This. Well said. Plus I think Engineering Explained might not have taken into account that rubber brake lines, usually black in color, which will absorb heat more than lighter colors, will get ridiculously hot in direct sunlight in states like Texas. 165 degrees F (74 C) is not uncommon. Rubber that gets that hot is bound to get softer and therefore expand more than in 65 degree weather.

    • @edgerat
      @edgerat 5 років тому +3

      anyone who has upgraded to braided lines on a bike or car knows the difference. Text book knowledge only gets you so far. Great point Vyppaaa11

    Your builds/BSOS/maintenance/repair videos are so fucking good, Jake. I absolutely love them. Fast paced and to the point but without skipping important stuff, with tons of useful advice for a novice mechanic like myself. It's funny, my favorite builds are yours and motonosity's, and they could not be more different. Polar opposites.
    I like yours because of everything I mentioned above, and I like motonosity's because he is (and if you read this motonosity - I'm not shitting on you here, no offense meant) a novice mechanic just like me, and if I were to build/mod a bike it would be very much like when he's doing it. Figuring shit out as I go, running into issues, making mistakes, learning.

    Hello my love. Steel braided lines help when you’re racing because when the fluid heats up the line expands and gives you a dead pedal. So while yes I love his channel too. Obviously he’s never raced a car either because I almost went off into trees because of brake fade on a decreasing radius downhill turn.

    I love your channel and I love seeing when shit goes wrong only because it shows me I'm not the only one getting my ass handed to me by something mechanical and even though I'm hyped about this build I gotta tell you I don't quite get the whole supermoto craze just because a semi-knobby dual sport tire will do 75-85% as good on the pavement as a supermoto tire but the street tire on most supermotos will only do 10% as good off road. It seems like you sacrifice more off-road capability than what you gain on the road. Despite all that I know that this thing will be an absolute blast on the road and with a quick wheel change it will be fun off road!

    Jake you should try and use a CRF rear master cylinder with the built in reservoir

    Engineering explained was obviously talking about cars, which stainless won't affect as dramatically as a motorcycle. Both of you guys are right, just maybe misinterpreted what he said.

    Caliper, caliber. Eh, same shit! Braided brake lines make a difference. When I switched from the old rubber hoses I had to change the amount of force I applied to the brakes to avoid lock up. If I applied the same force to the rear brake lever when I had the rubber hose after installing the braided hose I consistently kept locking up my rear tire under heavy braking. Definitely was a learning curve there. That's also with stock master cylinders, rotors, and pads.

    Agreed that braided lines make a huge difference. As the rubber lines get hot, they get softer also.
    That shim to align the caliper is pointless though Jake... calipers are hydraulic... one side will just extend the piston a little further to make up the difference. The pistons apply even amounts of pressure, not even amounts of movement right?

      Uhh, not really. That will cause the pistons to sit at an angle as well which will over time round out the cylinder in the caliper. There is no fix for a rounded out caliper, it needs to be replaced at that point.

    I agree with steel braided brakes make a a difference compared to rubber lines
