    30 FPS played back at 24 has a nice look. Things are slowed down slightly, but not too much. However, if the clip have audio, it's going to be a mess. Personally, if your timeline is 24, shooting in 24 seems to be the only option for a good result.

    Once again a very good video. I particularly liked seeing the 240 versus 1000 frames per second. Even if you were spitting out water. :) Thank you also for using a human subject. Makes a huge difference.

    For the motion blur, it's actually the shutter speed maters. If you test different fps in the same shutter speed, you should get the same motion blur result.

      Yes, but when changing fps you'll often want to change the shutter speed for "proper" motion blur, so the tests here all followed the 180° shutter rule

      @@BradGiannini if you want the proper motion blur for 60 fps video you should shoot at 1/60 shutter speed. Gerald Undone has made a great example video about this subject. Of course if you are going to slow down that 60 fps footage then you should use 1/120 shutter speed

      @@jaakkotahtela123 @Jaakko Tähtelä Yeah I've seen that video, I would say for most people when they're shooting a higher frame rate they are thinking of possibly using slow motion, and then are deciding in the edit, so in that case I would say the best choice is following the 180° rule. But yes if the intention is to deliver a 120 fps real time video with what we've been conditioned to see as "standard" motion blur, then moving to a 360° shutter makes sense.

      @@jaakkotahtela123 Absolutely right!! The 180 degree rule need not apply when shooting at 60 fps. I often shoot 60 fps and also EDIT in real-time with audio in sync at 60 fps. Results in really nice smooth crisp and sharp video with not too much motion blur which is often the case especially when panning!!

    Is there a standard that 60fps needs to be slowed by on a 24fps timeline? Do all 60 fps clips need to be slowed by a certain percentage or can you do whatever you think looks best?

      Nope you don't have to slow it down to 24, I have a 30fps video at the end of this one if you want to see what that looks like. Generally you slow it down to whatever your timeline's fps is, but you don't have to, you can slow it down less!

    i think i know the answer but how does they display/playback device play in to to scenario. what of my screen does 60 gps natively. can it do 24? 25? Or only 30 as 60 is divisible by it? what’s it do if 60 is this hypothetical monitor’s technical max and 120p footage is being played..?

      It's actually a great question because I think it can be confusing. It depends on the screen/graphics card, but many screens can adapt - for instance playing 24fps by using a 48hz refresh rate (even if capable of 60hz), otherwise it'll usually resort to something called a 3:2 pulldown. As for a frame rate higher than the screen's refresh rate, you will still notice differences even if the footage is 120fps and the screen is let's say 60hz, however not to the same level as if you had a 120hz screen.

    Is much of this frame rate talk, similar to pixel peeping? I must have an untrained eye because I really don't see the difference between say 24 and 30 fps. If presented with a video all by itself, I could not look at it for five seconds and say oh that is 30 fps. It is like listening to a stereo system and saying you can hear the difference when Monster Cable is ran to the speakers as opposed to regular lamp cord.
    Your advice to think ahead about how you plan on delivering your video, and shoot your video at the same rate is solid.
    I also agree with you not liking the term cinematic, and that goes double for cinematic stock audio...
    Anyway, thanks for the video.

      That's an interesting comparison - for me I can tell right away but it might be similar to those who swear by listening to records over digital. The good news is if you can't tell, go ahead and use those other frame rates! Just be careful about some audio issues that may arise

      the monster cable analogy is a poor fit here. there’s a measurable and predictable change is they look of each framers capture and playback. you’d be able to tell if you were taught what to look for. it’s intuitive i think. once you see the lack of motion blur you can’t un-see.

      ​@@iComplainer Yeah it's interesting I know people that swear they can't see a difference. I guess there must be some training involved and it becomes ingrained. I think you're right - once you see it you can't go back.

    Hi Brad! Thanks for the explanation. I have a very newbie question, sorry for that. So, if a cameraman has a Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K PRO, and he is only able to do a 100 fps slow motion shot (2.7K) - will I be able to create an 1000 fps look with editing the footage (without choppiness/strangeness - and I don't care about the audio now)?

      Hey, that's a great question! In terms of how realistic it'll look, it depends on what you're filming. You should check out my other video of real vs. fake slow motion to see what something like optical flow could do to help smooth out the frames once you slow it down. You're going to be adding 900 frames/sec that don't exist, so using a software to fill in the gaps is a must. Liquid is notoriously hard to fake so it depends on what you're filming. Does that help?

    Hi Brad, thanks for this amazing video and explanation. One thing I’m a bit confused about is how these higher 30 and 60 frame rates are supposed to appear more choppy when trying to play it in real time on a 24 fps timeline because the program is removing frames to fit the 24. However it looks somewhat smoother and better quality to me when the 30 and 60 is playing in real time on the 24fps timeline... Am I seeing it incorrectly or is my knowledge about the clip supposed to being choppy inaccurate?

      So it won't often appear "choppy" if only a few frames are being removed (as in the case of 30 into 24) but as the fps gets higher and more frames are removed you might get some choppiness/strangeness, especially on the audio end. Another factor that could increase a choppy/strange result is certain frame rates don't cleanly fit into 24fps, due to math (like 60fps into a 24fps timeline is removing every 1.667 frames). To demonstrate that, if you look at the end of this video, there are links to the 30fps and 60fps timeline videos I made, and you can see those will be much smoother with less motion blur. Shutter speed also plays a big part in the smoothness, and I kept that ratio constant for these tests. But you're not seeing it incorrectly, a lot comes down to preference - if you prefer the smoother look, I would probably suggest filming, editing, and uploading in 30fps, or maybe 60fps in very specific cases!

    Great video💯. Dose anyone know why sometimes when I use 60fps files on a 24frames timeline after I upload to UA-cam. The video drifts out of sync.

      Interesting, are you trying to play the 60fps in realtime? Are you using premiere and does it only go out of sync on UA-cam?

      @@BradGiannini Thank you for replying. I export it in 24fps and it plays perfectly on my PC. But after I upload it to youtube it's off by a 1/2 sec. It's a consert so the audio has to be in sync.

I would maybe clear the cache and cookies, sign out and sign back in and see if that helps.
