Hello everyone! My apologies for the mistake at 5:49 in the video. The "欢" in "喜欢" is in the neutral tone. 喜欢’s tone pattern is similar to a third tone followed by a first tone, but in the word "喜欢," the "欢" is shorter and lighter than a full first tone. Sorry for the confusion! 老师喜欢买书 lǎoshī(_--) xǐhuan(_-) mǎishū(_--)
Wow, this is exactly that which I've been looking for for the last decade and a half 😮 Highly effective and extremely informative, let alone very interesting!!! Many thanks to you 🎉
Same here, I struggle with tones (and the traditional way of teaching them) since 2016! This video shows a totally different approach to it! Thank goodness! 😅
啦啦老师! 非常感谢! (spoken out loud to practice 😅) This video has a life changing power! I've almost given up on learning chinese because of my difficulty with the traditional way of teaching tones. I thought I was stupid, unable to learn. Never been exposed to a method like yours! Thank you so much for sharing this treasure with us! ❤
Hi 文玉, I’m truly touched by your comment. You’re definitely not stupid! It’s all about finding the right approach that works for you. Tone issues trouble many learners, which is why I made this video. I’m so glad it helped you, and I hope you continue making great progress!
Very well presented. My problem is that as soon as I try to actually speak, I stop concentrating on the tones, so the whole things collapses :D Also if I am trying to remember all the tones and speak correctly I tend to speak very slow and a bit robotic...
You’re definitely not alone-many learners feel the same way! Tone practice takes time and consistency to build muscle memory. Try practicing 4-5 times a week for 20-30 minutes each session. This can really help! Especially if you’ve been learning Chinese for a while, correcting old habits may take extra effort, but it’s absolutely doable with regular practice. 加油!
This is an excellent resource. I planned to find tone pair examples to practice and, in time, cover all the pairs. Now I just have to wait for your videos! 那太好了!🎉🙏🏻
Tones has been difficult for me, especially when connecting words of different tones together. Rhythm is basically the mechanism to constructing the phrases I wish to say. This video was extremely helpful, awesome work. 非常感謝
Even though I'm not a beginner this video is extremely helpful. It is clear and concise in explanation and demonstration as well as good reference for tone practice.非常感谢!
Omg I’ve been thinking about learning Chinese due to the culture and c-dramas but the tones intimidated me but I loved ur video ! Plz make more tonal practices videos and how to read/learn/use pinyin ! Thank you so much this video was so helpful ! 😆
This video was awesome Lala !!! I'm starting to learn Chinese now and don't have much time... so I was thinking I would never get the tones right. This examples of tone pairs made it much more approachable and easy to understand and try to reproduce.
Please continue reviewing your assigned textbooks to familiarize yourself with the appropriate tone. I recommend supplementing your textbook study with her video tutorials afterward.
Thank you for your comment! Self-learning tones can be a big challenge, but I hope this video and the future tone videos I’ll be sharing will help you improve your skills.
I bought this t-shirt on Taobao. If you can use Taobao, you can screenshot the t-shirt from my video, then open Taobao and scan the screenshot to find the t-shirt
I'm a bit confused with the word xihuan. I thought it was xi3 huan5, in other words, a 3rd and 5th tone and not a 3rd and 1st tone as shown in the video @5:49. That said I have heard that a 5th tone may take a softer higher tone than the previous tone and take either a higher or lower tone based on the first syllable. When I look up the word in Pleco it shows xi as 3rd tone and huan with no tone mark indicating a 5th tone. Any explanation would be appreciated. Thanks.
Thank you for pointing that out, and I apologize for the mistake in the video. You are correct-喜欢's "欢" is a neutral tone. The pronunciation of this word resembles a third tone followed by a first tone, but "欢" is shorter and lighter than a standard first tone. Thanks again for your observation, and I’ll be more careful next time!
This seems to confirm that I don’t hear tone correctly. On the last exercise, it sounded as tho three of the speakers had a falling #4, not a rising tone #3.
Hi Ralph! Thanks for your comment. Actually, in the phrase '非常感谢,' the tone of '感(3rd tone)' is a short, low tone. I'll be posting more tone practice videos, especially focused on tone 3 variations, to help you hear the differences more clearly.
You're welcome! Great question! Usually, 一 changes to a second tone when it’s followed by a fourth tone. For example, '一个' (yí ɡè ), and it changes to a fourth tone when it’s followed by a first/second/third tone, like:一天(yì tiān ),一年(yì nián ),一点(yì diǎn )
Music or words, all sounds are self expression. They will be received better if they sound like you know how to say what you are trying to express. Xiexie.
I have a few Chinese girlfriends from china some are just friends no romance but they tell me that my Chinese is very good. I do better by seeing the characters and then practice the speaking. Pinyin is still harder than just learning the characters and their sounds. Maybe someday I will have pinyin down as I continue to learn Chinese. I can read 1534 Chinese characters i just cannot speak that many. DuoLingo is good at teaching Chinese but the speaking part is very poor. I need to be able to test the speaking and slow it down so I can hear it. Rosetta stone also has speech testing not very good. I have many Chinese Apps Some are much better at tone practicing than others. Having a native speaker to help you speak good Chinese helps. I am dating a Chinese woman and she will help me speak Chinese and I help her learn English. 谢谢
@ Chinalovecupid website find all the cute women you want and be a good man and you will find your own. English is tonal, we just don't point it out. Just pay attention to how words change sounds when you speak. Chinese is actually similar, you often naturally change tones because the words lead you to.
Those aren't exactly the same type of tones. Changing the tone of a word doesn't change the meaning or the word. If you say "dog" it doesn't matter the tone, mood, or the accent, it'll always be the same.

Wow! Thank you so much for your comment! It really means a lot to me and is such a huge encouragement.
I have always thought practising tones in two-syllable words, not in single syllables, is the way to go

Putonghua tones. Chinese is a written language.
Toning while speaking slow is not the problem. Chinese people speak at jet speed, and it is very hard to catch it.
❤🎉
English is tonal, we just don't point it out. Just pay attention to how words change sounds when you speak. Chinese is actually similar, you often naturally change tones because the words lead you to.
how is english a tonal language? It's not

Waaait...why does Intel have that melody?
3:33 basically just speak like a robot. That's it.
Haha, yes, exactly! When you're not yet fluent in a language, it's helpful to break down each syllable and practice slowly, just like a robot. Over time, you'll become more natural and fluent! 😊
When you speak each syllable very slowly and clearly in other language , it will possibly sound like robot too.
