Not so "Budget" Night Vision Setup

  • Night vision is a deep dark hole of financial ruin. Here's my basic "budget" setup. I am not a professional user of night vision, it's really just a hobby. But like with everything else, I want the best experience for my money. This means avoiding avoiding knockoffs or airsoft grade equipment. I've already been burned buying cheaper alternatives. Buy once, cry once.

I hate how expensive NVG's are. I'm lucky in that I have a basic PVS-14 setup, but it's a non-gated MX10160A and I want to move into dual tubes at some point. It's killing me saving up for it.

I have the OPMOD also. It doesn't make that sound. I just use the skull crusher because I'm cheap / broke. I also use my red dot on a night vision setting. It works. After getting used to the skull crusher, it didn't bother me anymore.

The whine is from the autogated power supply. The OPMOD is an "alpha" tube which isn't autogated.

Earl An you are correct. I thought it was 3p when I bought it. Oh well. It works pretty well.

You might want to look into a Team Wendy helmet

I had an Exfil LTP. Didn't fit my weird shaped head, sat too low even with extra padding.

I'm looking at getting a pvs14 parts kits online for like $700, and buying a gem 3 tube separately. I've seen gen 3 thin filmed tubes for around $1000 sometimes even less. Obviously the filmless white phosphor tubes would be more. Only downside is it's not nitrogen purged and no warranty. Any other downsides you can't think of doing it that way? Or would you just recommend spending the $3k on a new one?

My preference is new or used from a trusted source. Be aware that some "new" units are old/rejected tubes rebuilt in new housings. One option is to find a binocular/optic shop than can do the purging for you. Purging may not be necessary depending on environment.

Earl An that's good advice. Where can you get used ones from a "trusted source"? I live in Arizona with pretty low humidity. So I think I should be fine, but the nitrogen purging definitely wouldn't hurt.

I bought my used 14 from a guy I trained with. Here's a pretty good write up from TNVC: tnvc.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/PVS14_Buyer_Guide_032713.pdf

Still liking that bridge? Good lockup on the dovetail and no screws backing out?

Zero wobble, the hinges are pretty tight though you can still bump them. The screws are secure. At 3.5 oz, the light weight is nice with stock pvs14s. I had my 14s rebuilt into vyper14 housings. I'm running them in an RQE bridge now.

Do you run comms at all?
Wondering how to set up comms for a civilian into the helmet mounted ear pro with Walmart bubble pack two way radio or baofeng

Idk man, I heard from a NAVY Seal Operator in the comment section of a UA-cam Video of the Armasight CORE and he said they were easily better than the PVS14 and his PVS7 GEN3 he had, what are your thoughts on this? I just think why he would have even gotten the CORE when he has a GEN3 PVS7, but he must be legit he said hes a former "NAVY SEAL tactical operator" so I imagine he knows hes stuff?. Plus people on UA-cam usually have integrity about things like this... Yall let me know what yall think?
    God Bless America

Ultimately I am Having a Real Difficult Time on Putting it Together,My Problem is That every time that I've Connect My N.G.Vs. The Binoculars Are Not Lined Up properly For My Horizontal Line in My Sight. And By the Way it's a G-1, It's really Works Well if I've could line it that Would connect too my PV-14 Rhino Mount & J/Arm.
