      Hi! So I did a bit of looking and the glaze is water resistant but not waterproof. Bc it is water based acrylic it will break down with exposure to water. But I know I’ve seen little planters so I did a bit of looking and found a tutorial that suggests you line the inside if your pot with a plastic container. I would think a yogurt container would work well with smaller pots and they used a sour cream container for a larger pot. I’ll add the link so you can take a look. Thanks for the question! Hi. I used mod podge on my clay art and dried it completely. The problem was that it became sticky and the clay piece would stick to the surface it touches and peels off like plastic. Please advise on what to to do with this. 😓 thank you.

    • @WellCraftedStudio
      @WellCraftedStudio  4 роки тому +2

      leslie santos unfortunately mod podge is similar to the triple thick glaze that I used in that it is acrylic based. Which means that it is basically a plastic and can be affected by heat, water etc. Maybe if you use a spray acrylic like polycrylic sealer that might cure to a harder coat. I’m really not sure though as I haven’t tested it. Sorry this isn’t more help!

    • @WellCraftedStudio
      @WellCraftedStudio  4 роки тому +8

      ryle u As far as I know there is no safe way to use air dry clay for beverages. Glazes are acrylic based which means they are both water and heat susceptible. Acrylic is basically a plastic and although it says it’s non-toxic to use it would not be food safe. Sorry!
      Traditional ceramics are kiln fired at a high temp and they become waterproof essentially. Then they’re glazed with what’s basically liquid glass and that’s fired at a super high temp. You just can’t get that with air dry clay as far as I know.

    • @WellCraftedStudio
      @WellCraftedStudio  5 років тому +2

      unique wun I have painted with acrylic multi surface craft paint and then added the gloss. You have to let the multi surface paint dry thoroughly first. So give it maybe 24 hours before you apply the gloss coat after you paint. The problem I did have with acrylics is that the paint wanted to bond to the glaze more then the clay and would pull away slightly. That’s why you want to make sure the acrylic has bonded. And actually that may take a couple of weeks for it to completely cure. Then go ahead and glaze. It will not ruin your design though.

    • @WellCraftedStudio
      @WellCraftedStudio  4 роки тому +3

      Vania Augustine hi! It totally depends on the clay you use. Once dry you should be able to scratch it, but not press into it. If so, there’s a couple of things to check.
      Clay body- If you’re using a plastic based clay like Crayola’s Model Magic you can totally push your nail into it. But if you’re using a mineral based clay like Crayola’s Air Dry Clay then you should be able to scratch it, but not push into it.
      It should dry completely within 24 hours to 1 week. Mine took about 3 days. It really depends on the rate of evaporation- so if you live somewhere pretty humid it will take longer for the water to condense out of the clay body.
      A good way to check is if it still feels cool to the touch. If it does, then it is still drying. If it is white and doesn’t feel cool then it should be dry. If this is the case and it still feels soft then there could be a problem with the clay.
      It’s important not to glaze it until it’s dried completely and then to let the glaze dry completely. The glaze is plastic based so the thicker you put it on (multiple coats) the more likely you’ll feel that when you try to push a nail into it instead of the support of the clay body underneath it. I hope that makes sense!

    • @WellCraftedStudio
      @WellCraftedStudio  4 роки тому +2

      lovescotland it depends on the type of clay you use. If you’re using the crayola brand then it should not be soft. You may just need to let it dry more? The water evaporates out of the clay.
      The glaze will add a degree of hardness to the exterior of the clay but it won’t add much structurally If that makes sense. It does however keep it from surface marring. Does that help? I do have a lot more info in the blog post that’s linked in the show notes.

      視V oh my goodness I missed this comment. I honestly have no I idea how it would do. Yes, it would make it easier to wipe out if you used just a damp cloth, as it is water-resistant. However it is not water-proof. Meaning it will start to break down with exposure to water. I would perhaps try a poly acrylic spray sealer. The problem with anything acrylic though is that it is water soluble at some level.

      Yes! It would by adding an extra layer of support. Especially if you let it dry between coats and applied multiple coats. However, it depends on how long and thin it is. You would still need to experiment, and the more coats would mean more brushstrokes so it might not be a clean clear glaze.

      Well Crafted Studio Not really a great idea, especially on larger (thicker) pieces as this could cause them to crack badly. Putting them in a heat source (oven, sun, other warm/dry areas) can cause outer parts to dry (and shrink) faster than thicker inner parts which is exactly what makes the clay crack upon drying. Best to be patient and let it dry naturally in a cool dry'ish place. On really thick pieces (like sculptures) I've even seen it recommended to place cellophane wrap lightly over the piece for more uniform drying to minimalize cracking.

      Wow- you’re so right! I totally didn’t think about the clay drying differently inside and out. I take ceramics and that is actually something I knew and didn’t think about. And we do cover our work with plastic and let it dry slowly for the reason you mentioned. Thanks for the save!

    Thanks a lot. Wanted to ask if I can pain first the clay with gouache or acrylics and later add this glaze. Can this glaze be applied on any type of paint once it’s fried? Thanks a lot

    And then you can paint over the glaze with Acrylic?

    • @WellCraftedStudio
      @WellCraftedStudio  4 роки тому +2

      georgina87 You can yes- the glaze is acrylic too. You can just paint on the clay. Then let the paint dry and then put another coat of the glaze over your painting it’ll look like ceramics. I have another video on making shaped trinket dishes that show how to paint them if you’re interested in that part of it.

    Can I paint the clay first before glazing?

    • @WellCraftedStudio
      @WellCraftedStudio  4 роки тому +3

      AC L yes/no. It honestly depends on the type of paint you choose. And unfortunately, I don’t have a list other then I think the multi-surface craft paints are good. The problem some people have experienced is that the paint seems to pull away from the clay once you add the glaze. My best recommendation would be to test your products first, make sure each layer is super dry before you add another, and if the paint with this glaze doesn’t work get a spray acrylic like Mod Podge’s where you can do light coats.

    • @WellCraftedStudio
      @WellCraftedStudio  5 років тому +3

      piece ofbud you can make a cup! But it will not be food safe with this product. I couldn’t find a brush on glaze that was food safe. I’ll keep looking and update this if I find one. Thanks for your comment! ❤️

      Not only is air dry clay, and this glaze not food-safe, putting liquid in it would ruin it. This is not the kind of clay you'd want for cups/plates.

    • @WellCraftedStudio
      @WellCraftedStudio  5 років тому +1

      Yup, @Amy Davis you’re right! When I was answering the question I was thinking that yes, air dry clay it is physically capable of making a cup shaped object. But I should have called out that you absolutely cannot use it as a cup. Which does kind of defeat the purpose of creating a cup shaped object. 🤦🏼‍♀️

      I know I’m late, but I would paint the air dry clay first THEN glaze it for the best results!
