  • In this 9th Blasts from the Past, video, I'm looking at Honda's little VTR250 Interceptor. Designed to go head-to-head with Kawasaki's Ninja 250R, the VTR250 Interceptor sported a 249cc L-Twin motor. Though it only lasted 3 years in America, the VTR250 lasted for decades in other parts of the world. What was it like to ride and drive? Let's find out together!

had an '89. thanks for the ride back in time. i remember mine had a bored out engine to 350 displacement. very responsive, smooth, and fit me (i'm a smaller dude) nicely for my first street bike. nice review👍

I really wanted a VT250F (in black, with a red frame) when they first appeared in 1982, but they never came to this country. Neither did the VT250 Spada or the "I want to be a Ducati Monster" VTR250 that followed. From 2009 on, they had fuel injection. They all sold very well in Australia.

I love my VTR, exactly like your picture, from Vegas, its too small but thats what makes Lucille special 😉 I have a 92 Xlvis VTR engine in it now and modified the looks to a Café racer style and with my home design exhaust system she's like a whole new experience, especially the power and handling, I'd certainly gained experience from the worn-out suspension riding through "the lost highway" too many times in that condition, but now cbr400r rear shock and adjustable gas forks was an incredible improvement, nolonger so much "Loose Seal" lol, thank you awesomely for sharing your great experience.

I own one of these, mine is a 1990 model with the disc exposed, I think it's also larger diameter than the earlier one. Mine is the Blue and White one with an America sticker on the fuel tank that indicates that this one was made for us here in the states. It is fun to ride but like you said it was made for small people.

I had the '89 that had the teal and magenta on white scheme. I loved riding this bike because the v-twin revved to 13K and it sounded like an F-1 Cosworth DFV. It was slow: it was faster than cars, but nearly every other motorcycle was faster. It was a great first motorcycle but was tiring on long rides.
I traded mine for a '90 CBR 1000F that was languishing on the dealer's lot for two years and got marked down. The CBR was the slowest and heaviest liter bike of that era, but it was great for long touring rides: smooth, comfy, and effortless. I outfitted mine with panniers, a tail pack, and tank bag, turning it into a great sport tourer.

Right on! Quite the jump from the 250 to the 1000! And if you hadn't ridden the other literbikes, the CBR1000F felt plenty fast. Cheers!

The Magentaceptor. I'm surprised at your height Jon that this was an option.
By this time I already left my 650 for a V65 Sabre. Much later, recently I picked up a 250 Nighthawk to experience smaller bikes. They work, but not well with the hills here in PA. A 250 would be fine in the flat parts of the country.

Right on Pete! I bought the VTR250 as a package deal with a PW50 minibike for my daughter. The condition an price were right and I wanted to try out the 250. It was never intended as my primary bike, so my height and weight (neither of which is suited to the VTR250 suited to this bike) weren't a factor.

I've never seen one of these before. Back in 1990, I was living in Tokyo so saw a lot of bikes the West didn't get. This one was for the US market, then. Good-looking bike. More attractive than the Kawasaki. Was there a VTR500 in the '80s, Jon?

I'm 6'3" and 225 lbs. I've ridden 24k miles on two scooters and am looking for a first real motorcycle. One of these is near me and it sounds so fun. Is it realistic for a guy my size?

You'll need to sit on it and make that decision for yourself. You would probably be more comfortable on a Ninja 500 or 650.

These go for around 1200 to 2000 right now worth every penny if you can wrench a little bit, dealership wont work on it, some parts are hard to find but it revs to 9500 and has 90degree vtein liquid cooled. Good size long and skinny
