What a good Start to this series! How are you guys feeling about episode 1?
It's really good
not really feeling it to be honest...
I am currently 5 episode in . And my honest review. Way better than the anime.. mainly cuz the Pace and the hole illustration feels like the manga. More mature... less comedy.. also emotional at some degree. The fighting is brilliant .. Zoro is no joke !
Meh. Still don’t feel the need to waste time on something that’s inferior to the original. Not being horrible like other live adaptations is not good enough for me. Either make something that’s better, reanimate the earlier arcs, etc, but to make something that can never be better than what we already have is pointless in my eyes.
@@arpadszabo661 The point is to introduce people that don't watch anime to a live action setting that's more digestible then a goofy anime. My parents loved this first episode and had no idea that the anime existed.
From a standpoint view of someone who hasn't watched one piece or read any manga, this was a delight to watch.Really liked all the characters , acting and action and visually cool as well.Think I will give one piece anime a watch after this as I was hesitant before because of the long episodes.
The live action can have this type of effect on someone who hasn't watched one piece and attract more audience
It's well worth the watch. The character development is amazing.
While I think story side is decent, the technical side isn't that good imo. Directing is pretty mediocre and inconsistent. The lighting is a also very inconsistent. Shot composition is weird. Why so many close-up shots? Why are they focusing the camera lens like an amateur? And cuts are bad sometimes but that to be expected. Most Western movies have bad action cuts(except good ones which are few). Acting is ehhhh. Koby's actor is super inconsistent ranging from decent to bad. Alvida was bad.
Tho I do like Luffy. He seems more intelligent and I am here for it.
@@chasinghaze0962Very short list of what you actually like 💀
Luffy was talking to the bird at the beginning, he wasn’t breaking the fourth wall lol
The term for looking at the camera is called a "close up". I've noticed quiet a lot and im only 2 episodes in so far. I think its used for dramatic effect when a character is talking to another character. I dont think its meant to be breaking the fourth wall type of trope. Im actually loving the cinematography and the music score.
Thanks for commenting this. When he said that, I thought to myself, "I don't think they ever break the 4th wall." The opening with Luffy wasn't breaking the 4th wall, he was talking to the bird, which is why once it flies away, he doesn't look at the camera again. And no one else ever does look directly at the camera. It's just a close-up of their face, like you said.
exactly. i didn’t see how it was breaking the fourth wall when it was then revealed that Luffy and Alvida were talking to someone. Also, they do that to with the anime, being extremely close up. unless they will do how Nami literally broke the fourth wall when Chopper began to dance giddily from her compliment.
You’re right. It’s Gol D. Roger. Basically the government covered up the D, so most people know him as Gold Roger. The reason for this is because there’s something called the Will of D. All we know is certain characters will have a D initial in their name.
The guy playing Helmeppo does SUCH a great job at being a whiny nepo baby, all of the casting of this show is incredible
Also, you know Zoro is thinking about what Helmeppo did with that sword every time he puts it in his mouth lmfao
Ugh. I really wish you hadn't put that second notion into my brain.
I just finished watching the first episode too! The first episode I liked a lot. I went in expecting a "bad but funny/good time" and found myself laughing and chuckling throughout. The choreography felt very Jackie Chan & pirates of the carribean.
It’s the exact same as the Bebop flop as far as action is concerned. Y’all are insane.
@@Creekmoreif you don't like the action you need to get off the crack you're smoking. The fight scenes were immaculate
@@Creekmoreyou trippin zoro's choreography was immaculate. The anime usually just makes it so that they clash 2-4 times and then a finishing move but la gave them actual choreography.
@@Creekmoreyou just hate being alone 😂
Gold Roger was the name given to him by the world government, they just started calling him Gold instead of Gol D for some reason. I think there's a scene with Whitebeard where he mentions it.
Kureha mentions it first
they called him gold to conceal the fact that he is a d
Ohh yeah
Yeah it was to hide the fact that he's a "D"
The reason why the world government changed the Gol D. Roger name in his records is because of what the D. middle name meant to them.
People who have the D. middle name has this thing called the "Will of D", anyone who had that middle name tend to do wild things or something crazy like that.
The box with the Devil Fruit was given camera focus during the first flashback scene when the Red Hair Pirates were moving the treasure and supplies around, just before Luffy comes out to them
Ian McShane being the narrator was soooooooooooooooooo good and such a great call from the creators of the show cause he really has that pirate-y voice. I was so happy because I grew up watching Pirates of the Caribbean and it was so nice to hear from him again, especially in One Piece, a pirate show that I also grew up watching
I was introduced to him through the American Gods series and he's been one of my favourite actors since❤
Yeah! And it's like one great pirate franchise passing the torch to a new pirate adventure.
I agree. I wish this was a weekly series so it will build up more hype and interest over the course
If it was the quality would drop eventually. We have the anime so let that be it.
no, netflix always kill the hype of new anime by spliting them in parties, i dont need this shit for this show
@@allrightformugiwara2656you’ll be okay
nah it's much better that they drop eps all at once because everyone was skeptical and doubting this LA and it's good they rode the wave of hype by letting the audience and fans see it all at once. this was good plan by the production, if these were released week by week, the hype would probably simply fade.
that does the complete opposite
Just binged the whole thing from midnight to 8am. Only complaint, I need more episodes right now🔥🔥
Same my only complaint was I wished they reached Loguetown
@@AmuJaneTVAt least they set it up for next season
I feel the same way about the weekly thing but it's also worth remembering things like Stranger Things and Squid Game were still talked about for weeks after initial release. Netflix has done weekly releases AND batch releases and I'm sure they have the numbers on how they do comparatively, so maybe it has less of an impact than we think. Otherwise I can't imagine why they would keep doing it.
He didn't just happen to grab the fruit to eat. He heard Shanks say it was worth a lot, so he sought that specific box out, and when he saw it was edible, he ate it.
Stranger Things didn't need week to week episodes, why should One Piece? I say the show speaks for itself and it's popularity will reflect that
If you like Zoro actor Mackenyu and how saucy he is. You would love him in the best anime live adaptation movie series Rurouni Kenshin as Enishii. Dude went all out in that movie.
Oh yes!
I prefer that they dropped all episode at once, since first, we still have the anime and the manga. And I think they're planning to create a season 2 so it can catch up with the anime hahahahah
Here after episode 1 of live action
They made it really good - guess what its true we can't judge book by cover .
Zoro and luffy were really giving some anime vibe ❤
@davidmeister9697blind
Some clarifications:
1. His public name was indeed "Gold Roger", even in the original. And that's cuz the government were trying to hide his true identity, that being a D.
2. Luffy didn't "break the 4th wall" when he was rambling on his small boat at the start. He was talking to the seagull.
My thoughts:
I think it's a solid pilot. The low points are manageable while the high points are really good. The characters, for the most part, fit their roles. There are some that I'm still getting used to like Garp being portrayed as a stern/strick dude or Luffy's humor, but overall everyone nailed it. The fight choreographies are amazing. Zoro nailed it, Nami nailed it,.. but more importantly, they did a pretty good job with Luffy's devil fruit. It didn't look forced nor wacky, atleast imo. Overall all this pilot episode was a pretty good kick starter for the series, now let's hope it only keeps going up from here.
Literally my thoughts right now. This could have been so so much worse.
2. Not a seagull. A News Coo. They deliver the papers all over the One Piece world.
@@jaycol21 I know, i just forgot what they were called so i just said seagull. 😂😂
@@oljackie35 He chose vice admiral
Season two can’t come soon enough! I will admit it’s not 100% faithful but In all honesty it has a much more mature dark/ gloomy aspect to it and plays a lot more into the pirate narrative and I’m 1000% into it
Rurouni Kenshin movie series has already broken that curse 😂
I’m watching the anime for the first time atm and tbh.. it would just be a samurai show lol there isn’t much to the power system or world that differs. so while technically you may be right, I would consider that to fall under something that has been done in shows/movies before very often.
@@Ssjutsu yeah I get that. I was just speaking in terms of cinematography, set and costume design, and staying as faithful as possible to the source material. do you plan to watch the movies? I think it's not just a samurai show cuz the actors themselves did the stunts, they studied how to fight and use swords which I think is more respectable than other samurai shows/movies
@@Ssjutsu nah you're wrong. Seriously, go check the movies out.The fight coreographies are absolutely insane and rurouni kenshin story is amazing. Also check the OVA Thrust and Betrayal one of the best things I've ever watched.
Kenshin and gintama both have had successful live actions before one piece
@@Ssjutsu the remake is kinda meh and the real story hasn't even started. Now that you know a bit about the characters go watch the Kyoto arc from the original anime. Start at episode 28. That whole story It's still amazing even for today standards
I agree 100%. I loved this episode, wish it was weekly, but this is a good step in the right direction for live action anime.
“All great pirates call out their finishing me” line with zoro was funny cause zoro is eventually known to name his moves in the most dramatic fashion…I hope they progress that lol
Also I like how they did the fruit…especially since we all know what it really is now, it wouldn’t seem right for shanks to be so careless with it..you actually see him take it from Roux while he was carrying a lot of treasure in the show …like he wanted to protect it….I enjoyed that small detail.
I actually also like the streamlining of the story, seems authentic. Let’s be honest …we all have LOVED! The journey…but they could definitely chop down alot of the anime and manga.
31:02 He grabbed that because we know the fruit has it's own will and it chose luffy we can see a close up on his face like he was controlled by something
Your reaction was great. You had me laughing just as much as they did.
@SSJUTSU Its "Gold" because of the government, they wanted to keep the D. clan hidden from history.
Also plays into Rogers crew theme as King of the pirates
"Gol d". Roger
"Silvers" Rayleigh
S"copper" Gaban
I like the full season drops. Living on borrowed time. Glad to watch what i can. Don't think will be around for weeks 😅
I can’t wait for my tv to arrive tomorrow to rewatch it on a better screen
YAI YO YAIIII YOOOOO!!!
Choreo for Zoro be🔥. They definitely got the soul of one piece let's hope they make it memorable by the end of ep 8
It has always been Gold Roger in the manga or anime, till it is revealed that world govt changed his name from Gol D Roger to Gold Roger
The weekly would have been super dope but I'm not gonna lie I'm kinda glad I can rwatch these already definitely better than I expected
You dint even know why he was called gold roger before.
The only minus with this project is only the all episodes being released at the same time
And yes, i agree with you
Actually the fact that they called him gold roger instead of gol D. Roger is attention to detail. Because in the show he has a meeting with whitebeard and mentioned how everyone said his name wrong (gold roger) and even whitebeard thought that was his name and not actually gol D. Roger THEY NAILED IT
It is Gol D. Roger, but the his name being Gol D. Roger isn't revealed until later in the series--when he's talking to Whitebeard and he laughs that the government refers to him as Gold Roger.
netflix : this is a manga adaptation , not the anime adaptation
Them looking at the camera kept bugging me too man, i feel you
I'm pretty sure Luffy was supposed to be looking at the bird when he was looking at the camera.
They weren't breaking the fourth wall bud. Luffy was talking to the bird. And any other time they're looking at the camera they're talking to someone in front of them.
Ian mcshane is the narrator, Winston the manager of the continental himself
I agree with what you said about dropping the entire season at once being worse for consistent popularity, but i think a difference between this and other shows is that the live action is not the current, modern day material that is instead released weekly (anime and manga). So since the live action covers the start of the series, it will always be an option for people to recommend to newcomers to dip their toes in and see if they like it, because for a lot of ppl the biggest hurdle with starting one piece is its length. which i think would help it main at least some relevance a while after its release
His name is Gol D. Roger. The World Goverment called him Gold Roger to cover up that he was a D. Its in the anime/manga as well
thanks for this reaction bro!!!! people are gonna hate this even if is good let em hate XD
nah this is the best first episode of a live action anime i have ever seen. i was laughing and pointing out small things during this whole thing! also it IS Gol D. Roger but you’re not supposed to know that till later on in the series
Voice narrator...is sir Ian Mcshane A.K.A as CAPTAIN BLACKBEARD of PIRATES OF THE CARBBEAN 4 and The Manager of John Wick ..
Can't wait for them to release new eps
They never broke the 4th wall 😂 barely looked at the camera
The D in Roger’s name are revealed at later season, in the first episodes it is Gold roger
They revealed later in the manga that it's Gol D. And not Gold
Pretty sure there isn't a curse. Rurouni Kenshin, Death Note 2006, Gintama 1 and 2, Tokyo Revengers and Diamond is Unbreakable.
i mean its pretty hard to do an anime adaptation to live action but i agree rurouni kenshin and tokyo revengers did great. Havent seen the others
Hey dont forget Jackie Chans City Hunter.
Speed racer
Also thank you for what you do Adonis, much love bro. Thank you 🙏
How do you know if it’s gonna be forgotten? And also, they’re not breaking the fourth wall. First of all, Luffy was talking to the bird. Second, it’s actually a really cool transition, which they introduce the characters with the posters and then they tear them apart; it’s not weird at all. I feel like you’re overthinking it.
The Government gave him the name Gold Roger so that they would hide the fact that he a member of the ,,D'' clan it was the same in manga/anime in the beggining!
he was talking to the bird
It actually looks good 👏
Going into this, i expected the usual cliff hanger "to be continued" every episode. That couldve been good.
I’ll say it, this live action Buggy is the NEW JOKER!
Here after one Episode. So far I think it is great, and the show gets a 9 out of 10 from me! I disagree on the releasing it all at once. Stranger things, as well as other shows, do great released all at once. I think it is the content that matters. People are not going to binge shows that are just okay. Those types of shows are not going to do great when the whole entire seasons are released at once. People will get burned out after watching several episodes, and it can cause people to stop watching. There is another factor which is length. If the episodes are under thirty minutes people can run through a whole series quickly. Where as if they are an hour people will have to pace it. I want to watch more Live Action One Piece right now, but I need to go start my day. So I am going to watch later (to state the obvious). Another thing. People will rewatch Great Movies, and Shows. Again look at Stranger things, or Pirates of the Caribbean. I was being hopeful coming into this series. Especially after seeing some pre-release reviews. Some people have already watched the whole season more than once! That being said so far it has surpassed my expectations!!!! Again it gets a solid 9 from me so far with the first episode. Also I liked it so much that I felt it necessary to go see what everyone else is saying as well as comment on the show!
I agree it should have been a weekly release. I actually thought it was going to be. I stayed up til 3am to watch it as soon as it dropped and meant to only watch 1 or 2 episodes before going to bed and ended up watching it all the way through. My only real gripe with the show was the cinematography. Some of the camerawork and the lens they used was just weird and as a result I didn't even understand the effect they were trying to achieve. Other than that I loved it!
I love that they more preferred the manga then the anime
Netflix's model is about binging. You expect them to change that on select shows, it would lose them credibility. Also its third week and one piece is still great, got renewed. Its all about the material at the end of day
The name Gold Roger was did not want to spoil who he was with Luffy. Its a big spoiler even just one letter..😂
Welcome to the future where a weeks time is not a thing as it's still big
I was thinking that. People are still talking about it. Understandably. It's an excellent show.
@chere100 I'm very happy. If this gets canceled, with this much buzz, another will pick it up just for the fact their numbers would boom.
seen in english dub/polish sub,now im doing japanese/polish and i love it,great they got "binks sake"/"we are" there :D
its Gold Roger at the beginning of the anime, cause later they reveal he also was from D family as Monkey D Luffy/Garp there is Gol D Roger ,Portgas D and others, they never reveal D's at the beginning :) ps. also the mistery behind "D" in names in one piece is unrevealed still after 1073 eps,The world government tries to cover all D's names and connections in all ways possible :)
Gold Roger is the name spread by the government to cover up his middle initial. Only a few know that it's Gol D. Roger
Roger was publicly known as Gold Roger. That's because the world government censored his name since the D's have that certain importance.
Not sure how Netflix does their releases for new series.. I seldom visit Netflix or when I do, the series has been released like at least a month ago. Do they release everything all at once all the time?
Yes his name is Gol D Roger but the WG calls Gold Roger to hide the D in his name that's in manga and anime I understand the confusion sense that was revealed in Alabasta and we're way beyond that now.
At the start of the series they tell us his name is Gold Roger and thats the name the public know. The WG hid the fact that he was a D clan member.
Looking at the camera isnt breaking the 4th wall
little criticism of your reaction is that it feels robotic cause of the way it's edited
I never even heard of one piece. I’m fell in mad love with this! After the fact, they messed up big time not doing week to week. I’m currently watching Ahsoka, which I very much love, but me and my friends text about it every Tuesday. Then we text the next six days about what we think is gonna happen. Netflix should’ve followed that model for the same results.
Asoka is dead and One Piece is still strong... welcome to the present.
100% agree with weekly releases would have been beneficial
Technically it wasn't breaking the fourth wall, since he was speaking to the seagull.
True true
I just watched the first episode and it was pretty good 😊,
3:24 perhaps they intended to hide the will of D
11:38 bro senin or Gordy one piece is wild, I’m hoping for arabasta they show the process of crocodile actually beheading the pirates and taking there heads to marines. In the manga they just had him carry a bag of there heads but if they actually show the beheading that’ll be nuts 😂
3:13 we on the first of the anime dont know in on D family
Nope he is known as Gold Roger. The Gol D. is first mentioned at the end of drum island.
GOLD D. ROGER their middle name holds great importance
I’d do 2 episodes a week.
Having finished it I don’t think it ever falls off track. If you liked the first episode you’ll like them all, IMO.
There are some definite changes. Some things I wouldn’t have done, some things I’m glad they did. Overall to me the changes make sense.
Good show with huge potential. Sad that this comes out now in the middle of a strike. It makes season 2 seem even further away than it already is.
This dude definitely hate Alvida😂😂😂
it is Gold Roger until Alabasta Arc ... Government called him Gold Roger to hide the middle name
You right I guess my one viewing of one piece is not helping with details lol
I like the Anime a lot, this live action (I have only seen the first episode) it's a little different from the Anime but it has the soul of one piece right, I don't know how people who doesn't watch the Anime or the Manga would react, but for me the live action I'm enjoying it so far 👌🏼
22:37 Actually got caught playing with his sword
it's Gol D. Roger the government wanted to hide the fact he has the D. in his name just like Luffy
Finished all 8, I would say it’s a solid LA. I would give it like 7.5/10 or even 8 if I’m being generous. There’s some that I wished they give more time to develop the story like in ep 6 & 7 because they changed a bit of the backstories and the pacing is too quick. I think the original 10/12 (I forgot) would be better for giving us time to digest their stories and makes us more immersed. I love Mackenyu and Emily’s portrayal, especially Mackenyu like you could see and feel that he is Zoro. Buggy is great too. Amazing casting. One that I don’t really like is how they potray someone (not going to spoil) and they’re one of my top favorites so I’m very iffy about it. The CG is good, the set is amazing, and I enjoyed the choreographies.
It's Mihawk isn't it? Was a bit disappointed too he didn't have that charisma from the manga/anime. It feels like he's just a regular person 🥲
@@zurielarts4650 it’s not Mihawk, it’s one of the characters that showed up a lot in this LA. You know who I’m talking about haha

Honestly, I don’t mind Garp’s portrayal here. He may seem out of character, but that’s because he is worried about Luffy. He doesn’t want his only grandson to suffer the same fate as Gol D. Roger if he was ever caught, hence why he’s always so… rough and serious. But upon knowing that he can never change his grandson’s mindset about becoming a pirate and is ready to face the perils in the Grand Line, he essentially became the Garp we know from the manga.
If there’s a second season, we might even see Garp’s true personality which is dozing off constantly and laughing enthusiastically. Basically, I love Garp in this role. It’s understandable that you don’t see it though because it’s very out of character. I had the same feelings when he acted too serious in the beginning. But he loved his grandson so much that he acted serious because of his wellbeing. Now that he doesn’t have to worry about him, he’ll probably go back to his comedic roots.
Just finished watching I wasn’t a massive fan of episode one abit shakey but every other episode smashed it for me i loved it didn’t mind the changes that were made things that need improving are luffys fighting and thats it
The Marines was hiding the D name so they called him Gold Roger instead of Gol D Roger.
It's good you didn't see the "This Season..." There are some things that I felt they should have left out for newcomers.
They have the change some things cause they would never work on a live action and I was hoping for that. For example Zoro wouldn't look believable holding the whole platoon behind him with 3 swords. Nice approach, liked the first episode
Thanks god .. episode 1 was sooo good
Yes I wished they would have at least did two episodes a week
Imagine zoro as a marine
Am watching this series but with audio in Japanese and sub in english🔥
DREAMIN!
Zoro is the main character of this show 😂🔥🔥. We need that Zoro spin-off
I just finished all eps
From my Original Manga. Gol D Roger used to named Gol Roger. Even back then Anime Dub used to called him Gol Roger. Not Gol D Roger.
I'm gonna be honest... Episode 1 is not a strong part for me.. But damn Episode 2 is amazing.. And I love it.. Haven't seen the others but I'm hoping it's great too 🙌
ep 1 really was a welcoming episode. it started to go crazy good within the middle of the ep. ep 2 was when the LA began to rise up well.
