I’m playing Titania in a month. This was so so so helpful, thank you. ❤️
I’m auditioning for this character tomorrow.
im auditioning for Titania in a few weeks thank you so much!!!!
Thank you Sarah, this was very helpful, you're awesome!
I absolutely adore these takes on Titania! She feels so unique among Shakespeare's characters, which is making finding monologues to audition for her a struggle! She's too regal for his lovers and too ethereal and sensual for his Queens. Do any monologues come to mind as Titania-esque?
It's tricky! Closest that comes to mind is Hecate's monologue in Macbeth. Just add a little more warmth to it.
Loved this
I'm always frustrated with Titania not coming out more on top here, even though I really love this play so much. I've been watching a lot of recordings of RSC and Globe performances this year, and I wondered who are some of your favorite Shakespearean actors? Who inspires you as an actor?
Good question! Honestly I love the ‘oldies’ like Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Derek Jacobi etc, and Kenneth Branagh too even though I suspect he might have quite an ego on him 😂 They’ve all been doing Shakespeare so long that it’s like breathing. I never feel like it’s dogmatic or rigid either, they seem flexible and open, which I love.
Lesser known but also wonderful is Oliver Ford Davies, who does my favourite Polonius ever. I just love him in everything. He does quite a bit of RSC stuff.
In some of the recent productions I loved Sandy Grierson (he played Angelo in Measure for Measure and Touchstone in As You Like It and was sooo good in both) and Amanda Harris. Also Michelle Terry. She pops up here and there but she might be more National Theatre than RSC.
The whole thing with Titania is so interesting. I think it’s something each director needs to think about seriously, because in this day and age the whole ‘take control of her via magic and make her do something unthinkable’ is really problematic. I love the play too but I love it more when that plot point is handled thoughtfully.
On a related note - did not love Gwendolyn Christie as Titania in the recent NT/Bridge Theatre production, but it was an interesting take on the play.
@@ShakespearewithSarah Ah, yes! I LOVE Oliver Ford Davies--he's so adorably charming! I recently watched him as York in Richard II--so good! And Michelle Terry is amazing. I was thinking of her when I asked the question, since the globe put up MSND on UA-cam during quarantine in which she played Titania/Hippolyta. Also, I saw her play Beatrice to Edward Bennett's Benedick. AH! Lovely. And yes, the classics, especially, Stewart. Wonderful. Thanks!
Thank you
