- In the latest episode of Letter of Law Interviews, we are delighted to host Ms. Susanah Naushad - a dual qualified lawyer (India and USA). Ms. Naushad graduated from NUJS, Kolkata and worked as a litigator in Delhi. After that, she went on to work as a Principal Associate at Khaitan & Co. for over five years. Thereafter, she obtained her LL.M from Columbia Law School and qualified the New York State Bar Exam. Presently, she is working as a Litigation Associate at Shearman & Sterling LLP in New York.

Revisited this video recently. I think what Susanah said about the Visa process is very pertinent. All that studying for the NY Bar and hardship of securing a job in a foreign firm simply to have your name rejected in the H1B visa lottery seems like such a waste, and frankly terrifying. Just goes to show that until US immigration laws are liberalised, there is no guarantee of employment over there for Indian lawyers, regardless of qualifications. Perhaps the only rational and realisable motivation for a US LLM, against this backdrop, should be a purely academic one.
