Geeez your examiner was making you work for it man, good stuff thought congrats.
Thank you!
This was packed with valuable information in a short time. EXTREMELY HELPFUL. Thanks!
Thank you!
Awesome 😎😎😎😎😎 thanks
Thanks for this video! Very informative! I'm a middle aged guy that has been a private pilot for many years but recently decided to get the CFI. I'm ready for a new challenge! I have been working on the commercial and have passed the commercial written as well as the FOI, AGI and IGI written. I have heard others say the CFI check ride is an all day affair, now I see why!
Yes sir it is definitely a very challenging Checkride, but becoming an instructor and helping brand new pilots discover their own love of flying can be amazing. Good luck! Let me know if there are any specific topics you want me to cover.
Thanks for the video! Your examiner really had you working extra hard!
I believe he did yes! He’s a great guy though, very nice and I am planning on doing my CFII Checkride with him as well. Thanks for your comment!
This was an excellent D-Brief of your Checkride... You streamlined everything very well... I'm preparing for my CFI Checkride, and after viewing your video, I can breathe a little... Thank you for sharing...
Got mine next Saturday. Very nervous. Wish you luck!
Hey mate thank you! And good luck on your check ride, just remember they don’t expect you to know EVERYTHING but you should definitely know what FAA resource to look at to find an answer to their question. The biggest ones are the PHAK, FAR/AIM, and AFH. Good luck!
Next Saturday, April 1st? Good luck mate, let us know how it goes!
@@lebrandonian Yes, April Fool’s day haha. Thank you and I’ll let you all know how it goes!
@@BrianThePilot1640 Hey mate, how did it go?
Good job on the summary and presentation. As a CFI applicant, the information certainly helps.
I’m glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Hey brother hope you’re doing well after this, I got my checkride coming up and appreciate this video.
Thank you, I appreciate your comment! I hope the Checkride went well/goes well.
Great video. I'm currently crawling through the FOIs and creeping up to the Technical Subject Areas. This video was really helpful!
I’m glad to hear it! Let me know if you have any questions.
Very good information packed into a quick video. Your examiner put you through it! 👍😂
Thank you!
Just realized how lucky I was for getting a ridiculously easy CFI check ride compared to this.
dude right I was just thinking holy shit this guy got shafted lol
Thank you both!
Y’all made me laugh so hard I spit out my morning coffee XD
Good video.
Thank you!
Thanks
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video! I was wondering is that the current PTS that you have shown? The one I printed off from the FAA has different requirements of what must be taught. Is it possible it may have changed in 8 months?
It looks like there is an updated one on the FAA website. Just from a quick glance, the emergency operations are different ie. what is a required to be tested. I would use that one.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Yes as @Mel-xc2xv said there is an updated one available with some minor changes. The advice and walkthrough I gave is still generally correct but some of the details have changed so make sure you obtain the updates before going up for the Checkride!
How long was your flight, 6 hours? Thanks for this, it's helpful
Thank you! And no the flight was just under 3 hours.
When it came to lesson plans, how did you have them prepared? Printed? Word document? What did yours look like? I have the Backseat Pilot CFI documents that I have gone through with the PTS and summarized/highlighted the required information and would like to use that, personally.
Howdy! So I typed all of my lesson plans in Google Documents so I could access them from any device easily. I didn't use anybody else's lesson plans, other than as a reference. It took a LOT of time but my instructor insisted on it and I did pass the ground portion first try, creating my lesson plans for scratch definitely helped with that.
My references for the lesson plans were my personal notes from private/instrument/commercial, the PHAK, the AFH, the FAR/AIM, the PTS/ACS, and personal experience.
As for what I brought to the checkride, I didn't have them printed out or anything, just had them downloaded onto my Laptop (and iPad as a backup) then taught using that.
The PTS actually requires either steep turns or steep spiral AND either Chandelles or Lazy 8s, and for ground reference 8s on pylons actually is the ONLY one they are required to choose.
Yes, that is correct.
Thanks for the video, but i have one question.
You mentioned that the minimum information that could be covered during your oral was the listed items a given task. That implies that there's more information out there that I'd have to know in order to be thorough doesn't it? If so, how the hell am I supposed to know what to study/notate beyond the items listed per Task? Also, does this mean there are MORE references listed beyond the PTS for each Area of Operation?
The short answer, yes.
For instance the items listed for principles of flight are just airfoil design, airplane stability and controllability, turning tendency, load factor, and wingtip vortices. So basically on your Checkride the aerodynamics lesson which is like 8 hours long gets boiled down to those 5 things and takes about 15 minutes.
There aren’t more references LISTED for each area of operation in the PTS but there are more areas that you should be using. For instance the AIM and 14 CFR can be referenced for every lesson, the PHAK for almost every lesson too, yet I believe a couple areas are missing those references.
The PTS are just the test standards, they’re not meant to completely cover all of your lesson plans, so you won’t have to teach nearly as much on the Checkride as you will in a couple days of work as a CFI.
Also, the way to study/notate the items listed per task is kind of up to you as you make your lesson plans. EVERYTHING that a 0 hour student needs to know to become a certified pilot needs to be somewhere in your lesson plans, certain things are easy to find a place for (weather, FAR’s, etc) but certain things are more difficult. It’s up to you to decide what is necessary and goes into the lesson plans and where it goes. I would use the notes you have from your own grounds/ground school as a reference, and the PHAK/AIM’s layout + info is a great reference too.
Did I understand your question and answer it the way you were asking?
How did was your FOI examination? Was a rote knowledge end a light understanding enough? Or did you actually teach FOIs??
So I actually taught the FOI’s to my instructor at the very beginning of the course, and then also did the SheppardAir test prep for the written exam. During my Checkride, I also taught the FOI’s to my examiner.
WOW, are you trying to scare OFF CFI trainees. As soon as you said how long the test is, students are be thinking damn.
This is a true FACT not BS. my CFI check was maybe 40 min. The whole thing.
I studied EVERYTHING except 141, 6 months, 3 hrs every day. I was ready, books under both pits, both flight bags full of everything else.
Walked in greetings, started to set everything down, he asked what I was doing ?, it's a open book test and I wish to be able to answer any of your questions. Remember 6 months 3 hrs a day study, I was READY.
I'm Not Going To ask you one Question, let's go fly, OK Ah ah OK. My training plan in my mind was just shot down.
Got to the plane. What would like me to do Sir, I'm new student. just give me a one side preflight to keep it simple, got up to the oil and prop, good enough let's go fly, OK ah ah OK.
I kept everything as a new student, basic, got to practice altitude, began to explain basics of a turn, first lift a wing for and look, did that, oh look there a plane at our 8, that's why we always do clearing turn and wing lifts, Head back to the airport, Ok ,ah, in my Mind I just failed, so just in case, I continued to perform as if the test was still active,
Kept it basic, asked which landing he would like me to perform, YourChoice, OK, simple no flap landing, greased it, Full Stop Please OK. I stayed composed on last part of the test, until I pulled the mixture. MAN Inside my head was reeling 500 mph, WHAT DID I DO WRONG, NO steep turns no stalls, no lazy 8s, nothing.
As soon as the prop stopped his feet were already on the tarmac. In a general and wondering way, I asked what did I do wrong?.
NOT A DAMN THING SIR, WELL DONE! WELL DONE.
I thought I failed Sir, he smiles grinning no Sir you nailed it. OK ah ah Thank you.
Went inside, sat down, he explained that they know CFI students can Fly, But can they Teach. That is the key. We are looking for teachers.
I was totally caught off guard by this chk ride, He said, I am a. Teacher you have the gift, I never thought so.
60 student over a 2 .7 yr time as a full time CFI. Had 2 fail first. The rest did great.
Good luck students. Cheers
You’re telling me you didn’t have an oral at all and passed the CFI checkride??? Who is this DPE and where can I find his phone number 😂
@@BassMan9571
It took me quite a long time to understand why NO questions, I already had my A.G.I.
He wanted to see if I could teach flight.
No need to ask any questions, I already proved I could teach ground by having my AGI. That was the reason fir no oral on a CFI chk ride.
Cheers....
