Haha! On our first driving tour of Portugal many years ago, we had traveled from Evora where we had stayed for a few nights, to Lisbon. On the Sunday we went to Cabo da Roca and I decided to take the scenic route along Ave. Marginal. The whole world it seemed had decided that a nice day at the beach was the thing to do. Actually it was the whole world, his family, the next door neighbours, friends up from the country, some people they had met the previous evening in a bar, and various others who were along for the ride. Happy memories.
Avoid Avenida Marginal on weekends 😁😁 I'm thinking of filming a driving tour from Cascais to Lisbon, but the billions of beachgoers and the traffic jams they cause is a worry. 😅
Thank you for sharing this informative video! Sitting here in the USA watching UA-cam videos trying to figure out where to plan for your scouting trip. This was more information about what life could be like when I retire there. Seeing residential areas and proximity to transportation, cafes, and shopping areas is great. ❤
No nice places to retire in the huge country of the US? This area on video has become very pricey with rents and real estate. New condos being built only for plus 1 million Euros.
Those were wonderful days of long summers of many years gone by, I could swim all day and never realized how could the water was, until a few years ago when I returned as an adult, and Yeaks this is cold water, and only lasted a few minutes. Carcavelos and Santo Amaro and Oeirs were the beaches of my childhood. Thankyou for the memories !!!!!!!!

After watching this truly pleasant neighborhood in your video, I looked up the prices for apartments in Quinta das Marianas. While not reaching the insane prices of Toronto, I'm not sure they can be considered bargains anymore. But I wouldn't say they're overpriced either. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the prices will go up in the future. It seems a very desirable location. As my late wife, a Remax real estate agent, used to say, there are three important considerations in real estate: location, location, and location.
Hello Daniel! 🙂 Yeah, those prices are not bargains, but it's to be expected in this area. The neighborhoods along the coast from Cascais to Lisbon are fairly expensive, for Portuguese standards, with Cascais being very expensive indeed. Cristiano Ronaldo is building his newest property there.
My wife and I have watched a lot of your walking videos and we greatly appreciate them. I like the Google Earth zoom in to start, and I like when you show the route at the beginning of the video like you did with the Estrela neighborhood. We always enjoy your video comments. Glad you did Carcavelos, it doesn't get much attention with Estoril, Cascais, Sintra, and (of course) Lisbon taking more attention.

The small historic center of Carcavelos certainly lets you know that you are in Portugal. I don't mean to be critical, but it is obvious that the historical beauty of the city has been enveloped by development that simulates an afterthought.

Eu moro aí,em Oeiras,e ainda a um mês estive aí,e no centro da vila , está uma casa desse vinho,e custa 15 euros cada copo,ainda hoje é muito apreciado, para quem possa,evidentemente.Sempre que posso vou ao mercado de Carcavelos.Da praia, não gosto muito,prefiro a Torre ou mesmo a de S. Oh well, I guess agriculture is more or less doomed in a boom area such as this; no wonder there's so little wine left (with prices to match). Interesting, though. Thanks for posting. It looks like many of the small towns along the Lisbon to Cascais line may be worth visitng. The Carcavelos beach looks nice. What's the temperature of the water like? For us Northerners, anything above 17̊C is acceptable, if only just, and a little over 20 is paradise.
Yeah, real estate pressure is intense in this region... but most of the surviving vines are owned by the municipality, so I think at least those are not in danger anymore. The temperature of the water in May/early June is usually 17/18 ºC. In August it can go up to 21/22 ºC which is not bad, but considerably lower than the Algarve, in southern Portugal. 😀 One of the factors that makes the water seem colder is the difference in temperature between the environment and the water, which can be huge in the summer.
O bairro da Quinta das Marianas não só parece um bairro calmo como foi literalmente construído por cima de um antigo bairro de lata ("favela") que havia nessa zona há 15 anos.
Uma vila pode ser freguesia e continuar a ser vila. Ser aldeia, vila ou cidade é o tipo de localidade. E ser freguesia, concelho/município, ou distrito tem haver com a organização administrativa de Portugal.
As designações dependem dos equipamentos e das estruturas locais como por exemplo, se tem piscina municipal, pavilhão desportivo, hospital, escola pública, etc.
Olá Ana! 😊 Sim, tem toda a razão. Neste caso eu penso que Carcavelos perdeu mesmo a sua classificação de vila, quando foi incorporada no concelho de Oeiras, no século 18. Embora as informações existentes sejam um pouco ambíguas... confesso que não tenho a certeza se ainda é vila ou não.

Yeah, no official Apple store in Lisbon yet, only Apple Premium Resellers, which is not the same thing at all. I didn't watch the WWDC23 Apple Keynote presentation, but most of the channels I subscribe to on UA-cam are tech-related, they all had videos about it. I'm cautiously optimistic about the Vision Pro headset. 😅 As someone who was very much into computer about 20-30 years ago (I still enjoy playing a game once in a while, especially medieval-themed role playing games), I've been eagerly awaiting for a good virtual reality headset since the early 2000s. So far it's all been a bit meh... Either too expensive, or too cumbersome, or too nausea inducing... The main problem with the Vision Pro seems to be the price. These stairs and pedestrian bridges over the train tracks are horrible. Also in Belem, they have see through floors for people with vertigo to get dizzy, how do elderly or disabled manage them?
I suffer from acrophobia (fear of heights) which then triggers vertigo, I don't like those pedestrian bridges at all... I always have to take a deep breath and hope for the best.

On 45:39 you can clearly see theres sewage being displaced at Carcavelos beach. I go with my family, but still doesnt seem that clean, I live in Alges, and Alges, Cruz Quebrada, Caxias for sure it has raw sewage being throw at the beach, thats very bad and sad, Portugal had to treat the sewage and not throw it open at the sea with lot of people going
Hello Ruben. 45:39?? That's a restaurant / bar, where are you seeing the sewage? There's no raw sewage at all in any of the places you have mentioned. In fact, Carcavelos has been awarded with a Blue Flag. The Blue Flag is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education, a not-for-profit non-governmental organisation consisting of 65 organisations in 77 member countries. The Blue Flag is an indication of the high environmental and quality standards of a beach. In the European Union, the water quality standards are incorporated in the EC Water Framework Directive. One of the criteria to have a Blue Flag is "No industrial or sewage related discharges may affect the beach area". The same thing in Caxias, another beach with a Blue Flag. Cruz Quebrada and Algés are not official beaches, therefore they can't have Blue Flags.

@@rubenluz2768 It was low tide at that moment, when the sea recedes it leaves behind these little pools and creeks, because the beach is not totally smooth/flat. It's something completely normal. The region of Oeiras, Carcavelos, Algés, etc. has numerous creeks, these canals exist (like the ones in Caxias and Cruz Quebrada) to effectively channel the water to the ocean. Especially important in the winter to avoid floods. That's not untreated sewage at all. There are no municipalities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area that discharge wastewater into the Tagus River or the ocean. There would be riots if that was the case. Regarding the smell, I bet you can only feel it in low tide. When the water recedes, it exposes areas that are typically submerged. Organic matter such as seaweed, algae, dead plants and animals, and other debris get left behind and begin to decompose in the open air. The decaying process releases various compounds, including sulfur compounds, which can contribute to that smell. Also, in coastal areas, mud flats and tidal zones contain sediments that are rich in organic material. When the water recedes, these sediments are exposed to the air. Anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in environments with little or no oxygen, break down the organic matter in these sediments. This process can produce hydrogen sulfide gas, which has a distinct, unpleasant odor similar to rotten eggs. Again, this is normal, even in the cleanest water on the planet.

This new development of apartments and condominiums in Carcavelos is too modern and too sterile unfortunately. What a missed opportunity. See it’s empty, they all prefer to hang out at the historic center instead.

Hello. All the places shown in the video are part of the same local authority / administrative unit, called the Carcavelos and Parede civil parish. The video is not about the smaller area that historically was considered Carcavelos, it shows the whole administrative unit.
@@POVTours I´m fully aware of the technicality, i lived there for 16 years. But that doesn´t change the fact that they are two distinct localities. From a practical standpoint, when one says "i live in Carcavelos", one surely isn´t including Parede and vice-versa. Any local that sees this video will have the same opinion.

I have already explained this several times in the comments, but here it goes again. - This video was requested by a person who wants to move to Carcavelos. - The person asked me specifically to show the center of Carcavelos AND the areas around it (which means Parede, because I had already made a video in Oeiras) - Parede and Carcavelos are part of the SAME civil parish, therefore a video about the civil parish of Carcavelos MUST include Parede. Just like a video about Lisbon can show more than just Baixa.

No nice places to retire in the huge country of the US? This area on video has become very pricey with rents and real estate. New condos being built only for plus 1 million Euros.
Those were wonderful days of long summers of many years gone by, I could swim all day and never realized how could the water was, until a few years ago when I returned as an adult, and Yeaks this is cold water, and only lasted a few minutes. Carcavelos and Santo Amaro and Oeirs were the beaches of my childhood. Thankyou for the memories !!!!!!!!

After watching this truly pleasant neighborhood in your video, I looked up the prices for apartments in Quinta das Marianas. While not reaching the insane prices of Toronto, I'm not sure they can be considered bargains anymore. But I wouldn't say they're overpriced either. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the prices will go up in the future. It seems a very desirable location. As my late wife, a Remax real estate agent, used to say, there are three important considerations in real estate: location, location, and location.
Hello Daniel! 🙂 Yeah, those prices are not bargains, but it's to be expected in this area. The neighborhoods along the coast from Cascais to Lisbon are fairly expensive, for Portuguese standards, with Cascais being very expensive indeed. Cristiano Ronaldo is building his newest property there.

The small historic center of Carcavelos certainly lets you know that you are in Portugal. I don't mean to be critical, but it is obvious that the historical beauty of the city has been enveloped by development that simulates an afterthought.
I agree 🙂 afterthought is a good way to describe most of the modern buildings surrounding the historic center...

O seu apartamento de 2 andares fica na rua onde se vê um edifício de 4 andares com uma grua mesmo por cima, @ 7:04 Ela está uns prédios mais abaixo nessa rua, mas tem uma bela vista para o mar!!
Estacionei junto à casa dela e apanhámos o comboio para Lisboa durante o dia... era época de Natal e era mágico. Gostava muito de viver nessa zona! Perto da água e perto de Lisboa. 🤩

Boa tarde, Carcavelos belas praias e uma bela " Vila" , mas a tranquilidade do momento com certeza se transforma no verão com seus turistas , aqui no Brasil já morei em locais assim, fora da temporada um tranquilidade já na temporada ( verão) se transforma e para os moradores ficava horrível, pois tudo ficava mais caro e concorrido, mas para o turista tudo festa 😄, abraços e tenha uma ótima semana 👏🤝

Boa noite Maria! 😀 Eu não tenho a certeza, mas tendo em conta a proximidade para a zona histórica, eu penso que essas duam colunas marcam o local onde no passado estaria alguma propriedade importante. Basicamente seria ali a entrada. 🤔 Ou então simplesmente sinalizavam a entrada na antiga localidade de Carcavelos, que era bem mais pequena antes da pressão imobiliária do século 20.

It looks like many of the small towns along the Lisbon to Cascais line may be worth visitng. The Carcavelos beach looks nice. What's the temperature of the water like? For us Northerners, anything above 17̊C is acceptable, if only just, and a little over 20 is paradise.
Yeah, real estate pressure is intense in this region... but most of the surviving vines are owned by the municipality, so I think at least those are not in danger anymore.
The temperature of the water in May/early June is usually 17/18 ºC. In August it can go up to 21/22 ºC which is not bad, but considerably lower than the Algarve, in southern Portugal. 😀
One of the factors that makes the water seem colder is the difference in temperature between the environment and the water, which can be huge in the summer.

O bairro da Quinta das Marianas não só parece um bairro calmo como foi literalmente construído por cima de um antigo bairro de lata ("favela") que havia nessa zona há 15 anos.
Uma vila pode ser freguesia e continuar a ser vila. Ser aldeia, vila ou cidade é o tipo de localidade. E ser freguesia, concelho/município, ou distrito tem haver com a organização administrativa de Portugal.
As designações dependem dos equipamentos e das estruturas locais como por exemplo, se tem piscina municipal, pavilhão desportivo, hospital, escola pública, etc.
Olá Ana! 😊 Sim, tem toda a razão. Neste caso eu penso que Carcavelos perdeu mesmo a sua classificação de vila, quando foi incorporada no concelho de Oeiras, no século 18. Embora as informações existentes sejam um pouco ambíguas... confesso que não tenho a certeza se ainda é vila ou não.

I didn't watch the WWDC23 Apple Keynote presentation, but most of the channels I subscribe to on UA-cam are tech-related, they all had videos about it.
I'm cautiously optimistic about the Vision Pro headset. 😅 As someone who was very much into computer about 20-30 years ago (I still enjoy playing a game once in a while, especially medieval-themed role playing games), I've been eagerly awaiting for a good virtual reality headset since the early 2000s. So far it's all been a bit meh... Either too expensive, or too cumbersome, or too nausea inducing... The main problem with the Vision Pro seems to be the price.
Let's see what the future brings though, maybe one day all my subscribers will be "walking" with me in Castro Marim. 😁

These stairs and pedestrian bridges over the train tracks are horrible. Also in Belem, they have see through floors for people with vertigo to get dizzy, how do elderly or disabled manage them?
I suffer from acrophobia (fear of heights) which then triggers vertigo, I don't like those pedestrian bridges at all... I always have to take a deep breath and hope for the best.

Oui, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Ederson et Cancelo (a été prêté par Manchester City au Bayern Munich) ont tous joué pour les équipes de jeunes de Benfica il y a quelques années. On 45:39 you can clearly see theres sewage being displaced at Carcavelos beach. I go with my family, but still doesnt seem that clean, I live in Alges, and Alges, Cruz Quebrada, Caxias for sure it has raw sewage being throw at the beach, thats very bad and sad, Portugal had to treat the sewage and not throw it open at the sea with lot of people going
Hello Ruben. 45:39?? That's a restaurant / bar, where are you seeing the sewage? There's no raw sewage at all in any of the places you have mentioned. In fact, Carcavelos has been awarded with a Blue Flag. The Blue Flag is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education, a not-for-profit non-governmental organisation consisting of 65 organisations in 77 member countries. The Blue Flag is an indication of the high environmental and quality standards of a beach.
In the European Union, the water quality standards are incorporated in the EC Water Framework Directive. One of the criteria to have a Blue Flag is "No industrial or sewage related discharges may affect the beach area". The same thing in Caxias, another beach with a Blue Flag.
Cruz Quebrada and Algés are not official beaches, therefore they can't have Blue Flags.

@@rubenluz2768 It was low tide at that moment, when the sea recedes it leaves behind these little pools and creeks, because the beach is not totally smooth/flat. It's something completely normal.
The region of Oeiras, Carcavelos, Algés, etc. has numerous creeks, these canals exist (like the ones in Caxias and Cruz Quebrada) to effectively channel the water to the ocean. Especially important in the winter to avoid floods. That's not untreated sewage at all.
There are no municipalities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area that discharge wastewater into the Tagus River or the ocean. There would be riots if that was the case.
Regarding the smell, I bet you can only feel it in low tide. When the water recedes, it exposes areas that are typically submerged. Organic matter such as seaweed, algae, dead plants and animals, and other debris get left behind and begin to decompose in the open air. The decaying process releases various compounds, including sulfur compounds, which can contribute to that smell.
Also, in coastal areas, mud flats and tidal zones contain sediments that are rich in organic material. When the water recedes, these sediments are exposed to the air. Anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in environments with little or no oxygen, break down the organic matter in these sediments. This process can produce hydrogen sulfide gas, which has a distinct, unpleasant odor similar to rotten eggs. Again, this is normal, even in the cleanest water on the planet.

This new development of apartments and condominiums in Carcavelos is too modern and too sterile unfortunately. What a missed opportunity. See it’s empty, they all prefer to hang out at the historic center instead.

But that doesn´t change the fact that they are two distinct localities.
From a practical standpoint, when one says "i live in Carcavelos", one surely isn´t including Parede and vice-versa.

- This video was requested by a person who wants to move to Carcavelos.
- The person asked me specifically to show the center of Carcavelos AND the areas around it (which means Parede, because I had already made a video in Oeiras)
- Parede and Carcavelos are part of the SAME civil parish, therefore a video about the civil parish of Carcavelos MUST include Parede. Just like a video about Lisbon can show more than just Baixa.
