Love this so so much! Whenever I walk our dog, I stop often when she wants to stop, I've often thought maybe I shouldn't but it feels so right because we are walking for her! Thank you for validating what I have felt is right sometimes, not every time!!!
Ever since adopting my two rescue dogs, I’ve enjoyed watching your videos and following up on your instagram. I enjoyed todays video so much! Just wanted to say that I look up to you so much, and being a new dog owner, I follow/take your word because you are the expert here. Wanting to give the best to my dogs, I’ve been LOVING your snack/food recommendations, and I can’t thank you enough! From when I first started watching you almost 2 years ago, my dogs have sure come a long way:) Thank you for everything! My dogs and I all still have a far way to go, but there has been much progress:) thank you for all you do!
Oh my goodness. Rachel, you read my mind. We have been trying SO hard to get our Golden puppy to stop pulling!! I was SO hoping you'd upload a leash video soon! Woo! 🥳
Awh I really hope it helps!! Here is another leash tip video that’s super recent. Keep me posted, you got this! m.ua-cam.com/video/gKNk-R0De9I/v-deo.html
Yes! How to train dream dog also educated me on these walks, she calls them decompression walks. They have made our structured walks sooo much more enjoyable and I know my pup loves her sniffari time
During the work week, I take my Hamish (an 18-month Sheltie-Collie) on a walk every night when I get home. It's just around the local neighbourhood but we never take the same route. I want him to get used to all the places near home so he can get back on his own if he ever has to. During the first 5 or so minutes, I keep him on a short lead because he's just SO excited to be out-and-about. After he settles down, I allow him to explore on a long lead, and every few minutes he stops to check back in on me and to let me catch up. There is even a small park that is fully enclosed and has child-lock gates. I let him off the lead in there (when there are no children present) but even then, as I'm walking circuits around the park, he keeps running back to me every 30 seconds or so, to check-in. On weekends, we go on longer walks, 10 to 15 kilometres in a mixture of urban, seaside, and bushland settings. He is mostly on a sniffari during those walks, except when I stop at a cafe. Then he sits calmly by my seat hoping for something to fall from the plate. - Melbourne, Australia.
My rescue is almost 2yrs old now and very reactive and low confidence. Walks tend to be a little stressful with pulling cause she wants to get though it fast as possible. I often have to stop her and go back and forth to help her work though some stress. About mid walk she relaxes more and really starts using her nose. If the weather isn’t to hot or a bad thunderstorm we go for a walk around the block(sometimes 2 blocks) when I get home from work around 8pm. I work 3-4days a week so she doesn’t go on walks everyday. Around this time there is not as many people out and temp is usually a bit cooler. After walks she gets 2 small frozen yogurts with a blueberry inside as a treat(helps cool her down as well).
Honestly, all of my dogs' walks are that way. I want them to improve their leash walking skills and behave, but beyond that, it's all for them. That's their time to catch up on neighborhood smells, leave their own calling cards, and explore. Their entire lives are indoors, except for when we head outside.
I am new to this, my dog just had a litter of puppies- it’s been a month so I am just 1. In love with all 7 of them 2. Overwhelmed 3. Binge watching allllllll of your videos. My dog Kloey is so skinny and looks malnourished from these pups and I am spending tons of money on food for her but she is lacking in something cause she is starving but not starving. She is eating my cats food. I have so much to learn and wanted to say that I appreciate all of your videos!
Gosh you're my absolute favorite!! I really truly love learning from you!! I struggle with my doodle sometimes and I always come back to your videos for advice or tips on how to be the best pet momma I can to my Paisley!!! Thank you for doing this videos they have completely changed the way I take care of my girl
I love your videos, and I have never thought about walking this way. A few questions: can you record doing this with your dogs, do you do sniff walk with both dogs at the same time (or one at a time), and how do you stop them from getting into trouble or just running after another dog bc they are already not focused on you?
i was wondering if u have any recommendations for new Zealand brands/based raw dog food, i am wanting to getting a puppy at some point and want to feed a raw food diet
This is amazing, thank you!! Can you give some advice on how to walk a scared dog and stop them from pulling, when they won't focus or sniff at all because they're so distracted by their fear of their surroundings? (Have a rescue dog still adjusting to the city after 9 months)
Hi Rachel, I recently switched my 9 year old cocker spaniel to front of the pack air dried food. I have never heard of Sundays food...Just wondering what you thought of Front of The Pack food. I am obsessed with your videos, you are spot on with all your advice. I have even started giving my dogs baby food after watching your videos!!!
Hey I need some help please . So my puppy is 7 months now and in the beginning he was doing great going on the pee pad , suddenly he won’t go if I’m not home he destroy the pads. And once I’m home he goes every where . If I take him out he will hold it until we are back inside . Any tips . Helppp please . Also when going on walks he always bark to everything and anything
My pup usually wants to drag me to something he's not allowed like a tissue or a crisp packet someone's discarded. He then likes to guard the item and not let me have it. What do you do in this situation?
@@jennar26 yup, same problem here. Someone left an ear bud in the park and my pup managed to get hold of it. He wouldn't let it go and ended up swallowing it! Had to take him to the vets so they could induce vomiting 😔
Hi Rachel I was wondering if you can do a video on puppy’s/Dogs to stop snapping at us when they have something in their mouth It would be supper helpful for my almost 1 year old pup and other dogs that have this problem Thank you!
i am a big believer in the sniffari been doing it since i got my puppy. as long as he is not pulling me and getting in my way he can sniff all he wants.
wished we lived in a world where empathizing with your dog enough to let them have a sniff-ari wasn’t controversial, but people like you give me hope :)
Hi Rachel. There is a company I think you might like. They are doing all natural product and they really care for the earth in General They have nice Dental chew that are made withouth any flour. They even make dog treats with Insect instead of Beef/chicken cause its better for the planet. The company called Wilder Harrier. I dont know if they deliver or sell in the US tough but you can always look. I think you would like their product.
We stop our dog from pulling by stopping. He's pretty smart. So, he realized by the 2nd walk that he wasn't going to make any progress by trying to move me. As soon as he realizes that he isn't moving, he just sits down. We reward him and give him some loving. Then, we continue our walk. I think it was helpful that I custom-made a Martinvale-type dog collar for him. It will not get tight enough to bind on his neck, but it will keep him from getting loose if he ever tried. Anyway, thanks for the videos.
I have been training my dog Bruce to do his “sniffies” when we walk. I incorporate training with treats and sniffing time where he can get his time to smell. I’ll be doing sniffy walks with him now too!
I appreciate the input, & support! If i do a sponsored video, it’s only with a brand/product that I personally have purchased, used, respected & researched. Part of my mission is to use my platform to elevate the brands that, imo, are doing it right. Pets > profit! Thanks for sticking around, means a ton 🙏🙏
Sometimes my dog doesnt wanna go on a walk so then i just follow her wherever she wants to go n she goes sniffing around the neighborhood for a while, usually she doesn't go far tho and returns home in about 15min max o.0
I need advice for my dog, whenever I go on walks with him sometimes alot of siliva would go out of his mouth, he also starts breathing really heavily which might be because he's a little obese but I also have a collar which goes around his neck so that might be something to do with that, is there any way I can help him by using a different collar when walking or something like that? Also if it's important, he's a 12-13 year old male labrador
My dog doesn't like walks :((( she only wants to go to the park (she knows the way, we live close to a park.) so she either pulls towards the park or if she realises that we are not going there she would try to pull back to our house :( she doesn't care about sniffing new smells at all. which is sometimes annoying because especially on very rainy and muddy days instead of taking her to the park(because she gets very dirty) I would like to just walk her.
Similar here. My pup loves walking when it's both me and my dad, but not when we walk her separately. I work so he can't walk her in the day as she won't go far. Being a beagle x springer she needs plenty of walks
I do this a lot, sometimes when we are going to a new place I will have her hill and when I see everything is safe on the way back out I let her sniff on a long leash. I say she's reading the mail
I’ve always called these sniff walks! I do this at least every other day, and sometimes once a day (since I work from home we try for 3 walks a day but sometimes that isn’t possible). Additionally, twice a month, we go to our favorite nature trail on a 15ft leash (not retractable) and he’s NEVER pulling since I let him choose where we go! He even sticks to the trail! Now, during all normal walks, he heels perfectly and always listens/keeps a loose leash. It’s amazing! (Plus he’s a super eager to please smooth collie.) I’m physically disabled and our walks are my only source of exercise, as well. It’s helped me so much. He saved me.
I always let my guy sniff walk half the walk, then just walk the other half. I too think the sniffing is important BUT how long should we allow them to sniff one spot for? My guy will go to extremes in smelling one spot, so I give him a little time then make him move on to the next. Reason is he's a smashed face dog so he really smashes his face into the ground, and recently had to deal with bacterial infection on his face. So now I limit how long he is allowed to stay in one spot. Any comments?
My lab mix does this once she relaxes on walks. If she seems to be fixated on one smell I’ll let her smell 3 seconds before telling her “let’s go” and give 2-3 tugs on the leash. If that doesn’t work I will put a steady pressure on the leash and firmly say “Penny. Let’s go”. Usually works for my girl.
Bro I don’t even know why to do with my dog we literally don’t take him out because he just behaves sooo bad like so bad and I just don’t know what to do because my dog isn’t treat motivated. My dog is an angel at home and 👹 outside it’s hard because he is kinda strong. In my neighborhood there are so much people like I don’t know how to get him out there. I really need help
