Dr. Peter Dobias, DVM: What every dog lover needs to know Dogs that pull can cause serious trauma to the thyroid gland, which results in hypothyroidism. This is a condition that affects mostly medium and large dogs, as they pull with more force than smaller dogs. Dogs that pull often damage their cervical spine nerves, which leads to shoulder and front leg lameness. Dogs that pull often lick their feet because they have an abnormal sensation due to cervical nerve damage. This condition is often misdiagnosed as allergies. Dogs that pull often traumatize the vagal nerve, which can lead to respiratory, digestive, and systemic problems that become chronic and can have serious consequences. Pullers that wear a collar only occasionally can still experience trauma; it sometimes takes just one pull to cause serious damage. Retractable leashes may increase the risk of injuries because their spring-loaded mechanism applies constant pressure on the neck, which compounds the chances of injury. I quit using a collar and leash by opting to use a front loading Y shaped harness I purchased from Dr. Dobias' online store.
I'm not a new furbaby parent but I'm learning a lot by watching your videos. I will definitely be recommending your channel to those that are new or wanting to learn more about training as well as many other insightful ideas/advices you have to offer. I like the marbles in a jar shake to tell dog no. No if it got in the cat litter box shake when it goes there. If your dog jumps on guests. Shake marbles.
I love😊 your contents on teaching people to understand the hidden things and dog foods and how they cook it and just everything you share with everyone is something that my dog has done I have never seen a dog hate dog food so much I have a little Boston terrier named Harley he will walk up to his bowl of dog food and he will smell it and back away from it then he will go and smell it and back away from it I told my husband I've never seen a dog it is if he dog food
Thank you! I am tired of trying to make my 3 1/2 month old pup line up perfectly when we walk. At this stage I just really need to burn off some of her extreme energy and if she’s right beside me part of the time and listening I figure perfect form can come later. I take her on sniffing walks daily now and have seen such improvement in her biting and barking it’s worth having a bit more leash work to do when she gets older.
I've made myself so dizzy during a session with a client once that I fell into a pole. Thanks for the validation. lol Always appriciate all you and your guests have to say.
We pick up our pup 9/11 and I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have found you. Your content is SO informative and really helps me feel less overwhelmed when in comes to the future of potty training, what the heck to do when he first comes home, fixes to potential issues, etc. I feel confident that I can do this and do it well, it also helps that I can search your videos if I get stuck. So basically…. Thank you!
I have learned quite a bit from you. My sincere Thanks. Got a ll wk.old Male Yorkie. Been together 10 days. So much to learn if you want to be a successful Pet owner.
I love your videos, I have watched so many training videos and yours are always simple and on point. Thanks for the great tips. My puppy is challenging me with going into the trash every chance he gets. I would love to see how you would tackle this puppy training issue. Thanks!
I’m hoping to get a puppy this year , I had a yellow lab who I had to put down 3 weeks before her 15 birthday. She ate kibble lots of dog treats , bones etc. I’m shocked to hear about raw meat but I’m very curious can a puppy eat like that? My lab had heart guard and flee med her whole life and I hated it so re thinking that for sure, Thanks Cricket from NOR CA
Would love your suggestions on some kibble toppers. Your leash suggestions are just what I needed to hear. I can’t wait to try them ALL. Your channel is amazing. Thank you for all you do to save all the damn dogs!!👏👏👏
Btw for the last 2 days I have been implementing ALL of your ideas and my dog is exhausted - mentally & physically. We hit all of your suggestions on our walks and we are having so much fun in the process. Thank you. Thank you ❤️👏👏❤️
Riggs loves walking. And running. And sniffing. 😂😂Honestly thought it would be way harder to walk him…love his high energy! We bought him little squeaker chipmunks and we play “ chipmunk chuck” lol with him and he loves it!
I plan on doing a lot of training with my pup but I don’t want them to become dependent on treats. Would be interested on an in depth of how to phase out treats in training.
I feel better when you mentioned your pups eat one meal a day. What time of day do you feed them? Our 7-month pup sometimes eat 2x/day and I feel bad cuz I thought they should east 3x/day.
I don’t like my 3 1/2 mo old dog sniffing so much because he has a habit of eating grass, dirt, leaves and other debris. My hand is always in his mouth pulling out debris. I give him the no command and he does not stop. What can I do to protect him from hurting himself.
I have 8 dogs in my home and I have tried to make my own dog food instead of kibble but they seem so unsatisfied and they crave their kibble....a cpl of our dogs are nibblers. so I give treats of raw meat and veggies to supplement. how do you feel about raw treats?
I watched your video about taking the dog to its potty areas every hour. When I’m practicing this indoors and outdoors do I use a leash? My puppies driving me crazy
Hi Rachel. I'm brand new to all your videos and they are the best by far. My name is Kelly and I'm getting a brand new 2 lb. Bichon Frise shortly. Can you help me to teach this new puppy house pad potty training soon? Thanks! I'm subscribed and LOVE your videos. P.S. I also have a 20 lb. Cat and a 6 lb. SPCA Cat. Thanks!
Hey Rachel- we got our 12week old Portuguese Water Dog a puzzle food dish as you suggested It did slow her down, but when she is nearly done she upends the dish to get the last bits of food! Any suggestions?
Hi Rachel! I have been binging your many videos as we are planning to get a puppy end of this year. We are going to have a nice sized yard but it will not be fenced in (renting)! So we were looking at doing an invisible fence. You said you don't believe in shock bark collars what about these? I thought the invisible fence would be a better option to keep my puppy safe and let my kids play with it freely in the yard over time. I know otherwise it could be quite some time before it is trained enough to let it off a leash go play freely without fear of them running away after something. Thoughts??
Hi Rachel, love your dog vlogs and great tips. Do you have any tips for walking two dogs and training two dogs, this is something I struggle with at times. Mainly because of age difference. 7 month old puppy and 20 month dog so at different stages of training
I find your videos very helpful. Thank you ❤ I do have one question. When we are on walks my puppy never looks me in the eyes while walking. She does however look at the treat bag.. How can I teach her to look at me or is this a normal step?
Love this! I'll be walking my friend's dog who is a puller, soon. So all of this is useful. Thank you 💜 Also that would be awesome to learn about the treat ratio to eventually no treats. 😄
So we just brought home this puppy and he’s used to sleeping in a litter with others so when left alone for the night in his crate he hates it yet when the door is open he likes to play inside of it. So when he comes for naps or sleep he does it on my bed. What should I do for when I leave for work?
My dog goes insane when she sees another dog. She sounds like a wild rabid monkey.. she just loses it. She just wants to say hi (like literally if she's allowed to say hi she didn't even care after a sniff even if the other dog wants to play). She gets crazy and it freaks people out and stresses me out. Otherwise she is calm. Help!
How do I get my dogs attention when he’s freaking out and lunging and barking at another dog? Nothing I do seems to get his attention. I’ve tried getting in front of him or pulling him in the other direction but I literally have to drag him away and I’m afraid of hurting his neck. He’s 50 pounds at 4 months and already so strong! 😩
@@mandypdxi never said harnesses do more harm than collars. They are more comfortable and probably do less harm than a collar alone. But trainers I’ve watched online say not to use them for dogs that pull bc it won’t stop the dogs from pulling bc they are too comfortable. That’s why they recommend a gentle leader. They are uncomfortable when the dog pulls.
I know this is controversial, but lives are at stake. I’ve had 2 dogs and a cat die within a week of routine vaccinations. My aunt has had 3 cats die soon after vaccination. Not only are shots harmful for kids (autism, SIDS, cancer, allergies etc…) and adults(!) but they are harmful to our pets. Our vet now does a titer test concerning that “required” rabies shot and the city accepted that without getting another shot. My dogs came vaccinated from rescue shelters but now…NO MORE! The same dose given to a Great Dane is given to a chihuahua and 1 - ONE rabies shot is sufficient for the lifetime of a dog. For those with ears to hear, let them hear.
